Restoring Gingerbread Images
I am attempting to use rogue_ET_recovery_1.2.2_FC06 to restore to a Android 2.3 backup. I have tried to restore a couple of backups, in each case, I am getting a MD5 mismatch. Each time I did a OS backup, recovery did create a MD5 sum.
These backups are located on the external sd card.
Are there any tools that can parse the backups and verify MD5 sums?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

would that let me upgrade from odin el29 to fc06? then restore the data?
nvm its restoring the data. it had an option to let me choose which to restore. i am going to assume data is contacts and the like at least i hope so . i had 2.3.4 or 2.3.6 on there. don't remember which.
If I were to add an init.d folder under the path /system/etc/ would all scripts I place under that folder work?

Can you please briefly explain why not to flash roms from this recovery? I will heed your warning but i'm curious and could use a little explanation. Thanks for all your time and work!
Can I flash ICS4ICS theme through this?
Do you have any plans or knowledge of another's plans to support the USCC R760? It's painful over here without any support (re: ports from a bigger carrier).
Alternately, do you want an apprentice? What I lack in skills, I make up for in moxie!

Known Issues-
-Flashing anything for ICS is risky and could result in bricking your device. It has been said a safe bet is using stock EL26 CWR to flash. By flashing our repack you agree that we are not held liable.

I used odin EL29 + CWM to get back to 2.3.6, but still encountered MD5 mismatch when I attempted to restore several backups of Blazer rom. I finally had to flash via recovery the Blazer rom. I did happen to rename the backup folders at the time of the backups. I read somewhere else in the forum where renames with spaces will clobber MD5 checksum.
Thanks.
I have been using all of his repacked versions to flash themes, app packs, and updates... so that is a huge bit of misinformation there!
I haven't even software bricked my phone and I've literally flashed every single leak in the past week or so.
Just follow directions folks.

Honestly its crazy how many different opinions exist on this topic. Some of the top dogs are saying this kernel / recovery shouldn't be used for flashing roms, others say you can't nandroid from ICS to GB, others say Odin is the only safe way to go...
As long as this confusion persists, there is only one sure thing...noobs like me will be brickin' ...

Odin or Flash this to get Deodexed stock EK02 with latest root and su binary and Busybox 1.20. This also comes with Chris's Stock CWM EK02 kernel. This does not include the modem. To flash the modem follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367695.
This does not wipe data.
I am not responsible for anything that happens to your phone. You do this at your own risk.
Thanks to kingsway8605, calkulin, -viperboy-, shabbypenguin, chris41g, T.C.P, graffixnyc, digits, and everyone else who helped out!!
Download
IMPORTANT: Make sure you have installed the proper XP or Win7 drivers before starting. Also, remove the SD card from the phone (this may not be necessary, but having the SD card installed has caused Odin to fail for a number of people, so might as well just do it).
1. Extract the contents of the zip file to a folder
2. Open odin
3. Put your phone in download mode (Shut it off, wait for lights to all go out, then hold v-down + power)
4. connect phone (you should see odin put a Com4 or something like that in the first box. The actual number is NOT important what is important is something popped up there when you connected your device, meaning ODIN can see it)
5. The only box that should be checked is Auto Reboot.
6. You do not need to choose a pit file.
7. In the PDA Section choose the tar file. (Deodexed-Rooted-Busybox-CWM-EK02.tar)
8. Hit start. It will do its thing.
9. If it fails than try a new cable.
10. If the phone hangs for any reason take the battery and sdcard out and let it sit for an hour. Put it back together and try again.

Sorry if this may seem like a dumb question, you say Odin or Flash. If Flashing, is it as easy as just going into recovery and flashing as a zip like a ROM, or is there more to it?
What are the odds that overstew's ICS theme will work on this?
I just flashed the zip in CWM, flashed fine.
formatted system
wiped data
wiped cache
wiped dalvik
flashed zip
Calks Format all zip would work just fine as well

I'm about to try his Ciano universal, will report back. if that works the ICS should as well
Edit: unfortunately The Ciano Universal Theme does not work over this. Wiped cache, dalvik, flashed theme. looked like it went through fine. rebooted from CWM but didn't get past first boot screen - pulled battery. Powered on, same thing. Went back to CWM to re-wipe and reflash(twice over itself) to try again, but same problem upon boot. oh well. There'll be plenty of options soon.

You should never flash themes, mods, roms etc that are built on different OS versions. It might appear to work but there are changes in the versions so you are basically trying to mix pieces of 2.3.4 with 2.3.6 which is a bad idea.

Yes data works. You should try out the new fb15 modem. That's what I just flashed....previously was running el29 with no problem though.
We need to determine whats bricking our phones when flashing/using ICS ROMS. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the kernel and the way things are handled with partitions in the recoveries.
I bricked coming from GB to ICS, after I went from ICS to GB using a NANDROID. Also used Mobile Odin to flash el26 recovery. This is the jist of it, anyone have a similar story?
i NEVER bricked because i ALWAYS follow the rules.

;D Funny thing is I did all that after I flashed it with mobile odin. still bricked, and you were told how step by step
Way back in 1942 I had me one of them new Samsung Epic 4G Touch kinda phones. I did me a flash using Heimdall Frontend with that there "Repartition" square all checked and low and behold I got me a nice fancy blue light when I tried to get that phone all powered on. Well, I learned something that day.The next day I was getting me a new one for sure! Well, I did just that and have been very careful cuz them phones ain't cheap. But, since the new FB and FC ICS leaks have been dripping down the pipes I have been flashing like a mad man. I have flashed everything Calkulin has released, Heimdall bad kernels to the device, tried agat's nice little ROM, push and pull files, torn apart kernels and put them together wrong and tried them on the device and you name it, unless the name is switching between Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich. I have had kernel panics, File System panics and other people have panicked. I did get a scare once when I wiped data/system reset and couldn't boot. I push a good kernel and flashed another ROM toot sweet! I have not bricked it again for the life of me. Mr_Milenko asked me to share this I suppose as a success story amidst all the stories and rumors about why this device is bricking. Honestly, I can only speculate. Since it's not a problem that can be reproduced and recovered from we can't just perma-brick devices to run expermients so we have to really think about what we're doing now. We don't even know at this point if an OTA is going to be safer than the leaks of the problem isn't known to samsung. Once we have source we can look for weaknesses in the it. Until then maybe a thread with exact step leading up to the bricking might help others avoid some patterns of destruction. If you say you have ended up with the Blu Light of Death (BLD, cuz we loves acronyms) give as many technical details as possible, including what versions of rom and kernel you are coming from, what methods and versions of tools you may have used to flash/push/etc, and what version you were attempting to flash. If you wanna speculate, at least put the details in a separate paragraph so the devs can see the facts clearly.
Good Luck Y'all!
I'm hearing people of bricking using Mobile odin, I would just play it safe and use my pc to odin. I really wish this would get sorted out. I never had to worry about bricking on my evo4g, now that's all I hear about flashing in ics

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I was gonna say using mobile Odin was probably what caused the brick, but then I'll get a slew of people defending Mo'din. PC odin every time man, I've tried damn near all the ICS builds and feel using the PC to restore the EL29 rooted one click restore then sfhub one click CWM push is the safest way to avoid any complications. It takes a whole five minutes and no worries.

Not to burst your bubble and you should try anyway, but if you are in the situation where your data partition is not writable, people who have tried repartitioning with ODIN found it didn't fix the problem. Even JTAG has not been able to fix the problem, so the conclusion of most people is there is a hardware issue that was caused by a software operation with incompatible kernel and recovery.

Make a nandroid backup. Then Odin the stock EL26 build with CWM recovery. From there you can go to AOKP. And use Calkulin's Format All to do the wiping if you use CWM to flash anything.
First off, read this so you know what mistakes not to make:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525495
Here's the link for EL26:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416477
And for AOKP:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514665
If you don't like ICS and want to revert back to what you had just Odin One-Click EL26 again, use the Auto Root Package to install CWM and restore the nandroid in recovery. If you do any wiping in recovery mode use Calkulin's Format All. It's much safer than manually wiping.
The link for the AOKP build has a really good how-to included with it. Takes you step by step through it.

Ya it has CWM5 on it that's be shown to be the safest to flash over to ICS. A lot of people ended up with bricked phones to discover that, lol.
I've flashed many times from EL29. It's flashing back that kills it. Wrong partition or something. Going forward is fine. Use Calk's Format all. And try not to restore data. It sometimes breaks things.
I think the issue is that you want to be using a certain version of CWM, and not any other recoveries like Rogue builds (no offense). That being said, I have flashed ICS from EL29 plenty of times. Get Mobile Odin Lite and our flash kernel from XDA (only available from XDA). Get the CWM EL26 kernel that everyone is using. Mobile Odin the kernel and hold the power button and up volume on reboot. It isn't much different or take much longer than rebooting into recovery.

Honestly OP there are stickys and instructions in every thread on how to do these things safely and (no offense) but if those were not enough and you still had to make a thread to ask again.... Maybe just maybe you should chill till they come up with a solid no problems method. I believe MeWarning gave you a lot of info as well as a few others.
Also they say to use EL26 but it seems that all recoveries EL29 and lower can be used with out issue. I would follow what the masses are doing though and not question too much especially if you are afraid....IMHO
Cut and dry as long as you flash and do everything you need too out of a GB kernel and CWM you will be ok..

I wouldnt use an el29 rogue repack to flash any aosp ics roms, might be safe for TW ics but aosp all recommend el26+cwm5 because that was the last build with stock cwm actually baked into the kernel and is the safest for flashing aosp ics. Mobile Odin and el26+cwm are 2 good items to keep on your SD card for flashing ics its quick and easy and doesn't take much longer to flash using that method than just booting to baked in recovery to flash

Not sure what's up, but all of a sudden I can't flash custom ROMs anymore. None of them boot. All I can do is odin OC stock Touchwiz roms, but any CWM flash of a ROM I do doesn't boot.
They worked until yesterday when I tried flashing the Rubix xcel rom v1.0.1. Every ROM before that flashed until I tried to flash that one and it just bootlooped. Never every flash does it.
And yes, download mode works and all touchwiz builds work when flashed through odin. Now i'm worried I won't be able to flash any custom ROM like the Sense 4 ROM if it comes out or any ROM built from source and only stock TW ROMs.

I was using the el26 CWM kernel. What should I try?
Btw, I've been flashing the el26 cwm kernel while on FD26 stock ROM. I've been able to flash without issues previously as I said so it shouldn't be the issue.
Have you tried other roms then that one?? There is a chance that ROM version doesn't boot.
Different recoveries shouldn't really make a difference in this case. You could try wiping data after a flash and see if it boots. Really shouldn't make a difference but I'm not sure why otherwise wiping and flashing a rom that should boot isn't.

I've tried rubix and EpicTouchAOSPmod (the latter I've used before) and AOKP today (used it before too). Neither booth and I even tried installing rubix 3 times.
I would suspect your rom downloads as a likely culprit.
Are you downloading them directly to your phone, external or internal sd, copying them from pc (usb problem causing glitches during copy)? Check md5 of roms if they are available also. Just a few ideas.
Edit: I could go so far as to format both your internal and external SD's from the storage menu of the phone (after you backup your stuff of course). Or pop out external SD and run it without as a test too.

I edited above but if you don't catch it try to wipe out data again after a flash. Not convinced this could make a difference but otherwise I can't imagine why a rom that should boot isn't.
Be sure your downloads are fully there too.. check md5s to be sure they are not corrupt.

Yes I have done that too.
I'll try removing my sd card and putting it back in. I'll try mobile odin too.

Try leaving it out entirely, you can always reinsert it later.

Flashing now. Will report back
I think you're calling to the wrong deity. LMAO
Ok, we don't want to see you back here until you've taken an adequate break and tried some of these things so you don't get overwhelmed.
Still not booting AOKP. Boots up with a black screen and nothing happens, like before. Oh well, thanks anyway. Really not sure what's wrong. I've always been able to flash ROMs.
Maybe later on I'll try odin to el29 then flash kernel with cwm then flash rom.
Yes, Odin to stock (GB preferably) flash Calks format all, (download a current copy I had an older one and discovered it didn't work), flash the rom. You know the drill.

Do you think ICS could be the issue? I mean I've flashed from FD26 to the el26 cwm before and had no issue. I'll try again with GB soon though, a new leak could be out tomorrow supposedly and I wanna try it out

Its possible, I would go back to totally stock EL29 GB.. Here is my canned Sfhub howto easy instructions, not that you need them :
1. Download to your pc SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Boot the phone up into download mode, connect the phone to your pc and run that file. Wait for the phone to reboot.
Download to your pc the e4gtauto-sfx.exe from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Run this file so it can self-extract.
USB Debugging must be ENABLED - [Menu->Settings->Applications->Development->USB debugging]
Click on "runfirst" from within the folder that gets created (the e4gtauto self extracts to a folder, can't remember what its called)
Your phone will already be rooted from the first file so click on "option C", then on the next page, click on "option J" for the rogue cwm and let it finish!
2. Save these instructions, you may need them again someday!
This will give you a totally FRESH copy with a stock rom.
This stock rom will already be rooted and have CWM recovery installed.
