My computer won't detect my Epic 4g when it's powered up, with either Debugging enabled or disabled. BUT, it does detect it when the phone is in Download Mode.
I have tried several different cables on all my usb ports. And the cable and port that I am currently connected with works perfectly on my other Epic 4g...
I wanted to root this Epic, but couldn't get computer to recognize it. When I plug it in when phone is powered up, I get no notification in the sys tray, nothing new shows up in device manager, no new drives show in My Computer, Odin doesn't recognize any devices.
So I put phone into DL Mode, plugged it in, and the computer recognized it, installed drivers, and Odin installed both Kernal-GB-3a and ACSRecovery1.0.0.5 successfully!
But when I boot the phone back up in order to copy the Superuser zip file onto SD card, same problem as before... Whether I click "Connect storage to PC" on phone or not, computer doesn't acknowledge.
Any advice?
(phone was on stock EL30 prior, fyi)
Thanks!
Remove ur current drivers and reinstall them manually. Www.samsung.com/support.

This happened to me with my 2 Epics, one connected the other did not. Had to reinstall the drivers...weird.

when you allow windows to automatically install the drivers, it doesn't always install the drivers properly. but when you manually install them, the installation process assures that they are ALL installed properly.
My epic asks if Iwant to connect to usb storage before the pc "sees" it

Hi.
Have Boostmobile Epic that came unrooted.
Downloaded drivers and phone shows in device manager under com ports.
Tried 11 USB cables then saw a video from qbking and bought a blackberry to use its cable making it 12 cables, none work.
Tried 2 computers with Vista and Win 7 x64.
Epic won't communicate with either comp with debugging on or off.
As i said in topic, one click root won't work. Says Phone is not connected.
I also cannot sideload content onto SD card because it does not show in My Computer.
It has been flashed to boost so i assume it has communicated with a PC in the past.
What can i do to fix this?
Reboot pc and phone then try again. If that doesn't work then uninstall drivers from pc then install again. Reboot pc after install after reboot plug in epic then wait for it to finish installing drivers then reboot both again then use odin.
You can also connect the phone with usb debugging on, then go into device manager on the computer and look for "other" or samsung android in USB section. Click on that and select update drivers and let windows update search and install drivers...it takes awhile.
just did the uninstall drivers then reboot both thing.
Driver installation shows device ready to use as...
SAMSUNG USB Composite Device
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem #2
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM) (COM5)
All ready to use.
But Still not showing in my computer for file transfer or working in usb debugging mode for root.

Try the update driver choice in device manager. The CDC driver is missing. I think it loads 5 drivers if I remember correctly with USB on...yeah the mass storage driver is missing too. Let Windows update find them all.

Hi, thanks for help.
Just tried uninstalling everything and letting windows find drivers. Windows found a different driver package from S3 studio or something but I still get no mass storage or root.
I've read you can root and install roms without a computer Guess that will have to be my route.
As far as mass storage goes... It's annoying but I pulled the back off and put SD card directly into computer
You are sliding down the pulldown on your epic screen and pushing mount sd card for mass storage right?

Yeah, the robot pic turns from green to orange but it never actually connects to either computer.
Going to my brothers house soon to check his 2 computers, he says his Thunderbolt will only work on one.

Some computers are finicky and will only work on the USB port used to install the drivers. Odin only works on the left side of my laptop and mass storage works on the right...go figure!
The fact that the phone thinks it connects and the computer probably makes the connection noise shows there is still a driver problem. Did you reboot the computer and phone after the full driver installation?
Yes I restarted both several times while installing/uninstalling
Drivers... I have just accepted that I need to remove the card to sideload content.
On a side note, I am now afraid to root my phone and change the roms because I'm on boostmobile and will be unable to connect phone to a computer to fix if something goes wrong.

after you install drivers, reboot, then plug in your phone w debugging on, it should install a bunch of drivers, then take forever on modem, unplug and replug the usb from the phone really fast, this should trip it up into moving to the next device... there should be at least two or three more. If you have GB loaded for some reason the RNDIS drivers are wonky. Make sure you use a USB port on your motherboard, not on a PCI, not on a front port... the drivers are acting weird lately, like they changed em up a bit... idunno... but once you get a setup, dont mess with it! Hope somethin helps... Its almost guaranteed the drivers, unless the Boost is the issue, idunno...
ive had that same problem ever sense ive got the phone, what if you havent given up there is another way for you to connect to your computer. It is very simple and fast it is how i connect now and it works every time.
1. Have computer on and Phone off
2. Boot your phone into ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1 (Power/camera/volume down)(it must be this version of clockwork)
3. Go to mounts and storage
4. On the bottom of the menu you must click mount usb storage.
5. Plug your phone into the computer and your computer should recognize your phone now.
Also if your on Vista / Win7 you should run the command line (cmd) or the bat file to root with admin rights: Right click cmd or the run.bat and select run as administrator and that hould help.

make sure your phone is disconnected from the computer and then try going into the settings and in the top section that is wireless and networks press more, then USB utilities, and press connect storage to PC and then plug your phone into the computer. had about the same problem and came across that.
You can also try going into your device settings on your pc (samsung/modem) and resetting the driver it seems to get "stuck" sometimes.

+1 to this... its the new way to connect
I put this on my sd card (by taking the card out of the phone) and putting it in a card reader. I flashed the file from the stock recovery and this gave me custom recovery. Then I restored my previous backup. I was having the same issue and FB21 has too many bugs. I went back to gingerbread but kept fb21 modem.
You can actually get MTP working quite simply...

So I have done something to my epic, I don't know if it would count as bricked soft bricked or whatever but when I turn it on it bootloops on samsung logo but I can still enter download mode, So I figured I would flash a stock rom with odin and start over.
I went to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
downloaded necessary drivers
installed and tried to connect to odin
I've tried every combination of powering the phone with the computer, then putting in download mode
I've tried powering on with battery booting into download mode opening odin selecting pit and tar and then pluging it in and nothing.
when the pc does recognize the phone it says device not recognized or device malfunctioned.
I saw a post somewhere with someone saying I needed to "advanced install" the drivers. So whatever that means I tried to uninstall the device from device manager while plugged in in download mode and updating the driver to the 64bit samsung usb driver and it says "unknown device already has best driver installed"
the computer I'm using is an HP DM1-4010us not that I think it would matter.
If anyone has anymore suggestions, or can suggest a method or pattern of step by step what I need to do
maybe install the drivers in a different compatibility mode?
what about odin compatibility?
System UAC is turned off and firewall is off too just in case it may be blocking odin from communicating with comm ports so I know that can't be the issue.
Thanks for listening to my overly detailed and confused ramblings and thanks in advance for any advice or help offered.

Try a different USB port and cable the stock cable sucks azz try a blackberry cable.
Have you tried a different usb port?
I have always used the cable that came with my epic, are you using it?
I'd at least open odin, put your phone into download mode and then connect it to the PC and see if with the stock cable it is recognized. That will tell you perhaps the cable you're using isn't connecting right for odin's use.
do you have any other cell phone drivers on your PC? I've seen where they conflict. Remove all cells phone drivers, reboot, install the epic drivers for win7 64bit
EDIT: damn i type slow. someone got itn there already

Heimdall fails to install drivers or detect the device, does this with AND without the samsung 64bit drivers installed.
Try downloading kies air to get drivers.

Make sure you downloaded the drivers named "Samsung_Mobile_Drivers_V1.3.8.." if not then that's the problem, if you need it I can email you the the file. Try all the usb cables in your house and all the computers as well, and take out sd card, I've also had this odin problem and I'm also sure it's your drivers since there are like 10 samsung drivers floating around lol.
Edit: nvm I downloaded the drivers from the thread you linked and they are correct.. try different cables, no battery no sd card, and different computers

Did you use the same port? Also make sure you are not using a hub or extension cable.
DL Drivers from Samsung/Delete USB Hubs in Dev Mgr
I actually had the same problem. It took me a while, and I'm not sure I totaly understand why, but this is what I think I did:
I had an EVO 4G and it had been rooted on the same PC, so just plugging the phone in using that cable, the PC (Win 7) kept seeing an Android phone (Generic). I uninstalled via Device Manager all USB Root Hub (Found this in another post), and rebooted.
When I plugged the phone back in, again it came up as generic Android. I deleted that, scanned for HW changes, and installed drivers from Samsung web site.
Still couldn't get Odin to see my phone, so I switched cables to the OEM that came with my phone, placed the phone into DL mode (PWR + VOL DOWN) then plugged it in. My PC now saw this as a Samsung Android Device under the USB section in Device Manager. Odin then recogonized my phone and the rest was all down hill.
One trick I also figured out was to run Odin as Admin. Even though my profile was an admin, it's a stupid UAC thing. Hope this helps.
stuff to try
Different usb port
reboot PC after installing drivers
Make sure phone is not plugged in when you installed the drivers
Different usb cable
run odin in admin mode
refresh windows devices when phone is plugged in
good luck!
you might try heimdall, as it comes with a usb driver that you can force install (has worked for me perfectly when odin is overly picky)
Ok first, Hi its my first time here.
I looked around, found a similar thread but lost it during registration.
I am slowly working on my first root using QBKing77's videos. Having not done anything to the phone yet windows sees the phone just fine. When i put it into download mode for odin windows says that "usb device not recognized".
I have checked the cable, used different ports, used different cable, uninstall reinstall drivers, try with no sd card and diff sd card. all of these have had the same result. Once again, pc sees phone just fine when normally running.
help please.
Does Odin see it? Are the drivers from the official Samsung website. If your lucky try another computer. If still doesn't work then your phone hates you It sounds like windows is secretly having an issue installing drivers. If you can try MAC/Heimdall because Mac doesn't need drivers
Sent from my SPH-D700
Delete the drivers from your computer. Turn on USB Debugging on the phone and plug it into the computer and let Windows find and install all the drivers from Windows Update. May take like 30 minutes to get them all.
