I'm getting a lot more freezes when surfing the web in EL30 than I ever got on EC05. I want to go back. Only problems are that I don't want to odin back to bml and I want the extra storage that MTD frees.
If anyone knows of an MTD ECO5 rom, I'd be very thankful if you can point it out.
Never heard of one. But I've seen a development thread that gives instructions to make your own.
sent from my secret underground bunker
There are no Froyo ROMs for MTD and won't be because you need a kernel to support it and we only have GB kernels and above supporting MTD. Your freezes may be because your phone does not like the kernel you are on. Change your kernel and do not OC or UV and see how that works.

1.) Try a different kernel
2.) Odin back to stock el30, select re-partition, auto-reboot, reset time. Make sure you remove your battery and SD card before running ODIN.
3.) Make sure you aren't using ei22 themes on el30 roms (it will appear to work, but will cause freezing in the long run.)
Your best solution to your problem would be try to odin back to stock el30 (the tar file is available in the development thread). Make sure you follow the instructions in the Q&A thread on how to properly restore a tweaked epic.
Good luck. I have never had a web browser lock up on el30, im betting its your kernel or theme.
If you continue to experience problems, it most likely is hardware related, take your phone to sprint, they will most likely offer you a new samsung epic at greatly reduced price.

Restoring data is what is causing your problems. You should only restore apps when upgrading from froyo.
There are apps in the market (Play store) that backup your messages and call logs and restore them to any version of android (that's what I was told) Called SMS Backup and Restore and Call Log Backup and Restore.

No offense to Bonsai at all, because the extra features are nice, but I'd like to go back to the rooted EB13 ext4 due to the battery drain I experienced in the Bonsai ROM. Do I have to reload it and re-setup my whole Android system from scratch? or can I load the rooted EB13 ext4 from the memory card like I did the Bonsai ROM (without losing all my programs and email)?
Wrong section brah.
Bonsai rom is offended...I just got a FC that said "I will no longer support your phone until rustyt22 apologizes for threatening to overwrite my brethren with a STOCK EB13" .
Sorry for wrong section. Mods - please move at your discretion and I apologize.
Can I do it though? or should I just start over?

I'll let others chime in, but I would guess to start here:

Yes, if it was me, I would start over.
Why for to eb13 when we have ec05? Yes your best best is to Odin the stock rom
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!
And you won't have to start over if you back up everything with Titanium or MyBackup. Backup, Odin EB13 prerooted (or EC05), d/l your backup program from the market and restore.
it depends on your radio I believe. If you updated your radio then odin for you...if not then wipe x 3 and reflash away.

I updated my stock-rooted ec05 to eh17 recently just to try out gingerbread, but it kept rebooting on me, so I tried last night to go back to ec05. I had downloaded the latest odin, I already had drivers installed, I even had another ec05 zip file with cwm 3.1.0.1 built in, and I had dg27.tar as an old standby. After many, many, many, many, many attempts, I finally managed to get the right combination of pit, tar, cable and usb port to get the old dg27 installed. It seemed to work ok, but seemed a bit slow. I did an upgrade to the latest ec05 using the built-in update tools. It was a 99mb download/update and it went fine. Then I re-rooted it with cwm 3.02.5 and updated to 3.1.0.1, but the actual phone part is just crap. It boots up ok, but then just FREEZES. It doesn't matter if I have the sd card installed or not, I can barely launch programs, I couldn't even make a phone call...the PHONE app fc'd on me... wtf??? the PHONE app fc'd on me... I can't even use my smartPHONE as a PHONE!!!! And I'm getting completely fed up with how slow it is and how it fc's 98% of the time and takes 10x's longer to do anything even when it does work. Thing is, my internet connection is only 512kb/s downstream...yes, that's only 512KB/s...so I can't just go around downloading .tar files everywhere trying each one until i find one that works. Plus, I knew the official gingerbread release is just around the corner, so I wanted to be back to stock for it. But I can't get this damn thing working to save my life and it's pissing me off to no end...I've wiped the cache and davlik cache so many times, it's not even funny. I don't want to just do a factory reset, because I have 18,000 txt msgs that takes an hour to restore and I have visual voicemail that I use and have tons of those saved and that requires using root access to copy the folder where the data and audio files are stored in the root in order to back it up.... so it's a pain each time I want to start over...
Anyone have any bright ideas? please???
~Mark/Zeoran
I can't think of anything to do but reload. I would back up my sdcard. Wipe everything 3x. Reformat the sdcard. Install Deca's Deodexed EH17 twice in a row without rebooting and see if that works for you. I have been using it with no problems. If you are set on EC05 than Odin EC05 instead. I would not go to DG27 and then up to EC05. Just go straight to EC05.
@crawrj, I'm serious man, GB is shifting the partions around some how, and not getting fixed when going back to froyo.
A lot of EH17 data is not compatible with EC05 that is why you are having so many FCs. A factory data reset is your best bet to get your stability back. Restore only data that you absolutely have to have. I had a buzzing in EG22 today from a EH17 downgrade that I couldn't find so did a reset myself today. But my phone is superfast and smooth again with no errors, so totally worth it. Restore your texts when you go to bed and will be done when you wake.

Not sure what that could be. I went from EF02 back to EC05 without any problems. I went back to Gingerbread on EG22 and have been here since.

Its random when it errors out but when it does, it can be bad to the point of having to Odin. Sometimes flashing a Froyo ROM fresh fixes it but sometimes it doesn't. I can't explain why it doesn't happen every time but I have been flashing 2 to 3 ROMs a day the past week and about 25% of the time, if I don't Odin, it can't be resolved

Yup, something was changed in that EH17. I have to redo my email accounts rather than restore the accounts and data.
I been going back and forth between GB and Froya. everytime i go up and down i use odin. if you want to make sure that your phone goes back to the manufactory settings then you need to have (Phone EFS Clear) checked. that will bring back everything to the first day you bought your phone then you can start again with whatever you want.
as far as backup up the files, first root your phone and go to 4shared.com and download (my backup pro .apk) this will allow you to backup and restore everything you have at one shot.
i hope any of that help
If you wipe everything 3x, reflash a ROM and reboot, it will usually (but not always) eliminate the problem. Then wipe everything 3x and restore a nandroid. You should be good. If it doesn't work after a clean ROM install then Odin is necessary

I ran into a similar issue, went from EH06 back to my daily driver EC05 that I had a nandroid of. wound up having to wipe everything, do the full EC05 rom install, kernel flash, and then run the restore to get it to boot. Not sure what the deal there was, but still got it working.
I recently jumped back to EC05, I just wiped 3x, flashed my ROM and then restored my APKs (never the data) brought back my call log, sms, mms, alarms and dictionary and have had no issues.
I tried, Bamboozle (EF02), Go Green (EG22), Osprey (EG22), Hawk v1 and 2 (EG22) and Vendetta (EH17)
I got tired of the rebooting in the leaks, I like being back to like 3-4 days on my ext battery with midNight 5.3
10/10 sat in GPS with 2.6m acc (using EH17 modem too)
Is Midnight EXT 4 based? I'm still on Stock EC05 RFS, but wondering if flashing the EH17 modem would be better...not all that impressed with the EC05 modem.

For me the EH17 modem has been the best I have used... but as with everything YMMV!!
I do agree that the EH17 modem is good, but the GB ROM that comes with it is broken. I got a lot of FC all over the place out of nowhere with the ROM. Since then, I've changed the ROM but kept the Modem and things are running much smoother.
GB leaks have many issues still and I think its still wrong to make them the everyday driver, in addition to that, we are not getting much benefit on having GB right now, many apps that were GB only are running perfectly fine on Froyo... My suggestion is, test the leaks if your feeling adventurous but expect issues.
Installed CM9 and tried to go back, now I cant get anything to stick, cant install CM9 again just get errors in CW cant mount etc. Help please.
What did you do exactly please add more info
You might have to odin back to a stock package which I could do for you remotely if you don't have a stock data cable this will bring back to a fresh state then I could reroot you and this time you can flash it properly it was probably a bad download.

Your not supposed to restore nandroids of bml on an mtd clockworkmod
I'm guessing you where on era's legendary rom? That's bml partition cm9 is on mtd partition that's why this happened.
You'll need to repartition and odin stock ec05 or el30 if you need el30 it can be found by toadlife if you need stock ec05 that's in the android development stickies at the top named "bring an epic back from the brink"
*note I can do this all for you in a matter of minutes*

Just waiting for an EL30 MTD version ROM that I like to come out, I'm hoping Toad will update CleanGB........After CM9 gets more wrinkles ironed out I may try that......I use my phone for work & cannot afford to gamble on an Alpha build....
I keep up with Toad's post for CleanGB MTD the rom & try help when I can.
I really like MTD, it just takes a slightly different process when flashing mods, but seems fast & stable.

I'd highly recommend some reading -- first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525495, then a few threads over in the development sub-forum about the ICS leaks. You are much better off not trying to save data when coming from GB.
You have a couple of ways to go to get started with ICS on the E4GT. You can use one of sfhub's one-click ODIN solutions (see his sticky at the top of the dev section, and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1584151).
Alternatively, you can find and download a) a copy of Calkulin's format-all flashable zip, b) an FD02 flashable ROM (I recommend agat63's or calkulin's as good starting points, but there are many options.) and c) the FD02 modem. Boot into your current recovery, make a nandroid backup, then flash the format-all zip (which will wipe everything), then the modem and ROM. Reboot, and you should be on FD02.
I *highly* recommend you take the time to read through the threads of the various ICS leak based ROMs out there -- at least enough that you know what the OP is talking about with everything they say. It will be time very well spent.
Finally -- this is just my advice and in no way implies any sort of guarantee... you are responsible for what you do with/to your phone.
So, you are saying I can't even use Titanium Backup for restoring data when I'll move from GB to ICS?
Or there is the way? I'm asking about it because I have more than hundred apps right now and it is kind of annoing to install all of them from scratch. And also kind of annoying to type all of the data again.
If there is the way, please, help me with the advice?

TB _apps_ restore should be ok. TB apps+data restore might be dicey (tho tbh I got away with it on a few apps... others behaved pretty badly... lots of fc's and other bad behaviors.) Best advice -- read, read, read, then back up, make the leap, make another backup on the ICS side, then see what you can get away with restoring apps bit by bit in TB.
Not really a good idea to TB anything GB into ICS. Greatly raises the chances of issues period. The store now has a page that has all the apps you have downloaded, makes it alittle easier. You can also make a copy of all your apps and put them on your SD so you don't have to redownload them again. IMO, a clean install is best.
Ya like bigtoysrock said don't even restore just the apps. It is highly suggested you do a fresh install of everything.
After moving to ICS, is it ok to use TB to back up apps and restore them on another ICS rom?

You pick the right ICS roms like CM9, Codename, Gummy, AOSP based roms, etc...and they will get backed up to Google for you. You are asked not to restore with TB to save yourself on what could be a potential problem. I can honestly say I have restored some of my apps with TB and have not had any issues from GB to ICS. I can also say that I have had issues in the past and if you mess something up this way its a pain the arse to have to start over.
But like also recommended in here I believe a clean install is the best thing to do and honestly its the best way to troubleshoot any issues.
When I first went to an ICS ROM from GB, I did use TB and didn't have any issues. I eventually did a clean install for an update and reinstalled all my apps through the Play Store.
For your first flash from GB to ICS I would do a clean install not using Titanium Backup. Reason being is ive had some odd bugs when I have done this in the past. On the first flash do it the long way and reinstall all of your apps manually. After you do this then backup using TB and as a safe measure I would Nandroid backup as well. Any updates after that you can get away without doing a full wipe in most cases. If you have any bugs and you are sure you did everything correct do a full wipe and install and see if the problem continues.

I have been searching for days now and I keep getting thigns confused with the other epic 4g touch (stupid effing retards, who decided on that naming) and its driving me crazy
I have the old epic 4g with the slide out keyboard
I have 2.2 ec05 I think, its midnightrom 5.5 ext4
I want to update to stock 2.3 as I think its available (or is that the other epic 4g again?) and then go about picking a new rom to use
I cant remember if I have to convert back to rfs before using odin, or can I just get a 2.3 stock ext4 rom with cwm or bonsai whatever is used now
I have been away from the forums for a few months and I am way behind - like I said I spent like 2-3 days so far searching and reading all sorts of crap that wasnt helpful or got me confused so I am coming here for help
what do I do first?
Sounds like you should be able to flash the new CWM 5.0.2.7 which can be found in the Roll up sticky in the top of Development and then flash an EL30 or FC09 ROM. You will also have to look into whether you want to switch to MTD (non samsung partition gives you more app space) or stick to BML. You may want to try Sleeper which detects your file system and keeps it. CleanGB and The People's ROM are good choices too. Or you may want to brave new frontiers altogether and choose an AOSP ROM based on ICS like CM9 or AOKP. You might want to take it slow and just update to a Touchwiz ROM for now. The People's ROM is very Bonsai-ish.

first is odin still used, I dont see much mentioning it anymore other then for CWM - some roms were odin files that did everything for you all at once
I think I have CWM on there also but at the time I needed bonsai (I think thats the name) to flash the midnightrom 5.5 so I installed that, if I can have both at the same time then I have both, if not then can I just install CWM5 the normal way or do I have to go back to stock first
probably going to do the CM9 rom I am using midnightrom and it was one of the best when it was new but the developer has sick kids and cant really keep up which makes sense so I want a new one and I dont want unstable roms - so most of what I have read has said that CM9 is really good and its ICS so thats cool I am still on 2.2 now
I dont need to backup anything other then sms which I have already so thats no problem all the apps I will just reinstall anyways and google backups my contacts
I really dont care if I start from scratch and I would prefer to wipe everything and start over because in the past with roms on other phones and this one updating wasnt as good as a new install so I will probably go that route
not sure about the MTD/BML I will have to look into that but I am running ext4 now journaling on so I assume I have to change the format back to rfs before messing with that
No one is making odin ROM tars anymore because there is a general dislike of Odin. You can flash the CWM 5.027, then 3 finger into, wipe data, cache and dalvik the flash CM9 and the immediately flash the gapps which is the google apps for things like the market (Play store now), Gmail and other stuff. Odin whichever modem you like at anytime.

yea I dont like odin either
but will I have to use odin for the model update or do the roms do that now also, I am on EC05 now
Well there are some flashable deltas that can get you from EC05 to EI22, then from there to EL30, then another to get you to FC09. Some have had unreliable results on the last one. It is easier to just Odin the one you want.

well since I have ext4 not rfs I would have to convert back to rfs, I think that cwm and/or bonsai will do this for me - then I could use the samsung software to "restore" my phone to stock and do a ota update to get the latest modem? - I think that the samsung software is odin in a different skin but whatever
again like I said sorry I have been out of the roms for about 1 year and things move so fast with this sorta stuff that I am like starting from scratch again

No. It doesn't matter because CM9 will convert you to MTD with yaffs2 file system. You are clearing all data anyway. Just flash cwm5, wipe everything and flash.
