Every non-Aosp rom I've ever flashed (Acs, bonsai, midnight, simply aosp, viper, et..) have always ended up freezing and forcing me to remove the battery to re-boot, I've followed instructions, re-downloaded the roms etc. CM7 and MIUI, both Aosp, have never had that problem, always flashed right the first time, never had to flash twice. I guess I'm just curious if anyone can explain why aosp roms work fine (minus mms, 4g, and the other aosp bugs) and every rom based off of official releases always seem to end up failing?

wrong section man, this is not development (it will be moved soon).
If you are following instructions to the point in ROM guides, I have no idea. Sorry. But more specifics on your problems would help us help you
Its because most of the non aosp roms are backing up and restoring your data. If your coming from a clean flash you have to flash the rom twice before it will boot up properly.
And yes this belongs in the q&a forum

Not to sound like an ass, but that's not entirely true. I have never had to flash non-aosp roms more than once.

Even after an odin? Cause I've had to every time. If I'm just going between two roms I don't. Maybe my phone is just picky

Haha you're not the only one! On DK28 I had to flash twice everytime! And then for a little while on EB13. I don't know what changed though. But I havent had to do it for a longtime. Maybe it's because I never boot into stock before flashing?
It mainly jas to do with us having a crappy recovery.

I experience this to an extent as well.. w/ SRF 1.0.2 it flashes first time and works flawlessly..
What I've found is that all devices aren't created equal. Some work really well others are finicky.
What I've found that works for me is immediately after a flash, I can tell if it's gonna be wonky or work. After the flash, if it 'delays' before popping back up to the recovery menu, it's gonna fail. If the recovery menu pops up right away I'm good.
When it 'fails'.. I'll reboot system.. on the white samsung screen, pull the battery. boot back into recovery, then re-flash. boot system if it doesn't auto boot and you're good.
Not sure why it's like this, but it works for me. MY device doesn't always play nice w/ every version of every ROM and rather than whining in all of the ROM threads about why the rom sucks and I can't use it.. I've figured out a way to use them through troubleshooting and process of elimination using some of the 'fixes' that are posted in the different threads.
all Epics are not created equal. Just gotta figure out what works for yours.
EDIT: now that I think about it, (not that it's a big deal) I'm gonna go find noobnl's thread about checking for bad blocks on the ONEnand... just curious if journaling is trashing my NAND (I don't think it is, but ya never know)
EDIT: Still only 3 bad blocks. Nothing to worry about for me

LOL, I am by no means developing anything for ACS. I'm not a developer, just an advocate
And knowing how k0nane does things, there would be absolutely no trace of something like that in ACS roms
Try ec05plus its an odin tar, and it will work from the first boot...

That's not true. He mentioned Simply which I know for a fact doesn't backup/restore data.
1.) Odin back to EC05
2.) Re-root and Install CWM3
3.) Let it convert you to EXT4
4.) Upgrade to CWM 3.0.2.5
5.) Wipe data.
6.) Go to Advanced/Mounts and hit Format /system
7.) Flash the rom of your choice
8.) If it fails again wipe data x3 and then system x3 for good measure, try try again.
Hope that helps.

Moved to Q&A.
I am new to rooting the Epic 4g, but not new to rooting in general. I had an HTC Hero (cdma) and am now on the Evo 4g. I understand all the terminology associated with rooting/flashing, etc, however, the Epic is a little different. I just rooted my wife's ECO5 Epic using the most recent One-Click method and everything worked great. The first thing I did was make a backup. I would like to flash Syndicate Frozen 1.2 but am a little confused on this whole files system jargon as it isn't existent or an option on the EVO. My questions are as follows: If I flash Syndicate Rom 1.2 and the Genocide kernel, I understand that it will convert my files system to Ext4 automatically, but if for some reason I don't like it, can I simply recover my backup in CWM and go back to stock? Or do I need to ODIN back to stock and reset up my whole system as I had it prior? I see that the One-Click 3.1.0.1 method I used has dual file system support. What does that all impact? Just new roms or my current ROM. I have done a bunch of research but haven't been comfortable in my findings enough to start flashing. Can someone please clarify this for me?
I believe there are scripts available to convert between the two file systems, in both directions.
That said, EXT4 is the way to go imo. Don't be shy about it. Sfr 1.2 is top rom in my book. Do take the time to go get the other goodies as well. Hotspot hack, and the supercharger script. It's all amazing when it comes together.
Sent from a secret underground bunker
Clockworkmod 3.1.0.1 does not restore filesystem type (ext4, rfs). You can either odin back to rfs or flash a .zip in Clockworkmod. Also, if you have access to odin, there is NO WAY you can brick your phone. It will ALWAYS be recoverable.
(unless you intentionally brick it, there are ways)
So just to clarify, I must ODIN back to stock and thenin recover my backup, which is just stock? Or, can my stock backup run on Ext4?

Best to restore first and do the conversion, but there is no reason you can't restore after. Although I usually do advanced restore data between file systems myself.

Will the completely stock rooted rom run on ext4? Or is my backup useless unless I convert back to rfs file system?

If I remember right, stock runs on ext4. As long as you have a different kernel. Stock kernel does NOT run on ext4.

That is 2 different questions. One no stock kernel is RFS. Two, restore as I mentioned before, advanced restore data only and you will be fine. You may have to set up your accounts but that is about it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I think i need to ask the question differently. Right now, all that I have done since getting her the phone is complete the One-click root 3.1.0.1. I then made a backup. I haven't done anything else or made any changes. If I now flash Syndicate 1.2 frozen but want to return to my backup, are you suggesting I don't need to ODIN back to stock, but simply advance restore in recovery? Sorry for being an idiot about this guys, but like I said, I am an Evo flashaholic and its taking me some getting used to speaking Epic language! Plus, I would hate to flub something up since its my wife's phone!

I think what I am looking for is step by step what is the shortest easiest way to "undo" a new rom flash and go back to exactly the way it was before. On the Evo, a nandroid backup is gold and does just this, but I am finding that on the Epic this isn't as simple
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I would not start with SRF 1.2. Because you also need to flash a kernel. Start by flashing a ROM that comes with a kernel. If it is for someone else keep it simple like ReRFS ROM. I would not even do EXT4 unless you are sure you have journaling enabled. The first freeze, drop or battery pull will cause Force Closes galore. Unless you are planning on supporting that phone constantly, keep it simple. And yes most times restore works fine without goling back to Odin.

Nand doesn't care what the file system is so yes. The issue you may run into is incompatibilties between ROMs and data. So go ahead. I run both nands and Titanium backup just in case of an incompatibility so I can go between froyo and GB.

Doesn't matter if he did an advanced data restore. It does not restore the kernel.
Also I am not sure it restores the kernel on a full nand restore. Did one recently and none of the kernel mods restored. Had to reflash my kernel. I thought 3.1.0.1 was supposed to backup and restore the kernel.

I am confused as to what the OP wants then. I thought he wanted to flash a ROM and if he didn't like it restore back.
As for CM7 to EH17 and back, simply flash and advance restore data or use Titanium Backup. I backed up Hurricane after flashing a new kernel and adding some mods. Upon restore later the first thing I noticed was the mods missing. This is with 3.1.0.1 Odin'd in. Had Bonsai recovery which does back up kernel image as well but would not flash other EH17 Roms for some reason.

He further confused me later on but going by the OP, then you are right and the best bet at that point is to Odin a prerooted stock ROM like EC05plus to save a step and then restore everything if he didn't like SRF 1.2 and Genocide.

You might have to odin back to a stock package which I could do for you remotely if you don't have a stock data cable this will bring back to a fresh state then I could reroot you and this time you can flash it properly it was probably a bad download.

Your not supposed to restore nandroids of bml on an mtd clockworkmod
I'm guessing you where on era's legendary rom? That's bml partition cm9 is on mtd partition that's why this happened.
You'll need to repartition and odin stock ec05 or el30 if you need el30 it can be found by toadlife if you need stock ec05 that's in the android development stickies at the top named "bring an epic back from the brink"

Never heard of one. But I've seen a development thread that gives instructions to make your own.

There are no Froyo ROMs for MTD and won't be because you need a kernel to support it and we only have GB kernels and above supporting MTD. Your freezes may be because your phone does not like the kernel you are on. Change your kernel and do not OC or UV and see how that works.

1.) Try a different kernel
2.) Odin back to stock el30, select re-partition, auto-reboot, reset time. Make sure you remove your battery and SD card before running ODIN.
3.) Make sure you aren't using ei22 themes on el30 roms (it will appear to work, but will cause freezing in the long run.)
Your best solution to your problem would be try to odin back to stock el30 (the tar file is available in the development thread). Make sure you follow the instructions in the Q&A thread on how to properly restore a tweaked epic.
Good luck. I have never had a web browser lock up on el30, im betting its your kernel or theme.
If you continue to experience problems, it most likely is hardware related, take your phone to sprint, they will most likely offer you a new samsung epic at greatly reduced price.

Restoring data is what is causing your problems. You should only restore apps when upgrading from froyo.
There are apps in the market (Play store) that backup your messages and call logs and restore them to any version of android (that's what I was told) Called SMS Backup and Restore and Call Log Backup and Restore.
I have been searching for days now and I keep getting thigns confused with the other epic 4g touch (stupid effing retards, who decided on that naming) and its driving me crazy
I have the old epic 4g with the slide out keyboard
I have 2.2 ec05 I think, its midnightrom 5.5 ext4
I want to update to stock 2.3 as I think its available (or is that the other epic 4g again?) and then go about picking a new rom to use
I cant remember if I have to convert back to rfs before using odin, or can I just get a 2.3 stock ext4 rom with cwm or bonsai whatever is used now
I have been away from the forums for a few months and I am way behind - like I said I spent like 2-3 days so far searching and reading all sorts of crap that wasnt helpful or got me confused so I am coming here for help
what do I do first?
Sounds like you should be able to flash the new CWM 5.0.2.7 which can be found in the Roll up sticky in the top of Development and then flash an EL30 or FC09 ROM. You will also have to look into whether you want to switch to MTD (non samsung partition gives you more app space) or stick to BML. You may want to try Sleeper which detects your file system and keeps it. CleanGB and The People's ROM are good choices too. Or you may want to brave new frontiers altogether and choose an AOSP ROM based on ICS like CM9 or AOKP. You might want to take it slow and just update to a Touchwiz ROM for now. The People's ROM is very Bonsai-ish.

first is odin still used, I dont see much mentioning it anymore other then for CWM - some roms were odin files that did everything for you all at once
I think I have CWM on there also but at the time I needed bonsai (I think thats the name) to flash the midnightrom 5.5 so I installed that, if I can have both at the same time then I have both, if not then can I just install CWM5 the normal way or do I have to go back to stock first
probably going to do the CM9 rom I am using midnightrom and it was one of the best when it was new but the developer has sick kids and cant really keep up which makes sense so I want a new one and I dont want unstable roms - so most of what I have read has said that CM9 is really good and its ICS so thats cool I am still on 2.2 now
I dont need to backup anything other then sms which I have already so thats no problem all the apps I will just reinstall anyways and google backups my contacts
I really dont care if I start from scratch and I would prefer to wipe everything and start over because in the past with roms on other phones and this one updating wasnt as good as a new install so I will probably go that route
not sure about the MTD/BML I will have to look into that but I am running ext4 now journaling on so I assume I have to change the format back to rfs before messing with that
No one is making odin ROM tars anymore because there is a general dislike of Odin. You can flash the CWM 5.027, then 3 finger into, wipe data, cache and dalvik the flash CM9 and the immediately flash the gapps which is the google apps for things like the market (Play store now), Gmail and other stuff. Odin whichever modem you like at anytime.

Well there are some flashable deltas that can get you from EC05 to EI22, then from there to EL30, then another to get you to FC09. Some have had unreliable results on the last one. It is easier to just Odin the one you want.

well since I have ext4 not rfs I would have to convert back to rfs, I think that cwm and/or bonsai will do this for me - then I could use the samsung software to "restore" my phone to stock and do a ota update to get the latest modem? - I think that the samsung software is odin in a different skin but whatever
again like I said sorry I have been out of the roms for about 1 year and things move so fast with this sorta stuff that I am like starting from scratch again

No. It doesn't matter because CM9 will convert you to MTD with yaffs2 file system. You are clearing all data anyway. Just flash cwm5, wipe everything and flash.
