[Q] Ghost applications - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I've been having an issue for a while on CM7.1.0 (stable) where, whenever I uninstall applications, their icon shows up as a grey image in my Settings->Applications->Manage Applications.
Take a look at this screenshot and you will see what it looks like...

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
This happens with both applications who are SD card-transferable, and non-SD card apps.
When I click on one of these "ghost packages", Settings gives me a force close notification.
Here is a logcat of what happens when I click on one of these apps...

Does anybody else have this issue? And what can I do to fix it?
Hope to hear back on this. Take care

How are you uninstalling the apps?
Can you check if they still have entries under /data/app?

Thanks for the reply,
I find this issue happens no matter how I uninstall them- through Settings->Manage Applications, or through uninstalling via long-press in GO Launcher. Their icons still show up weird like this.
There are no entries for these applications in my /data/app directory, nor under /data/data or /data/app-private. :s

Can you download/run Titanium Backup and see if there are any entries in there? Maybe try delete them from there.
Also, in adb shell (or terminal emulator, make sure you're root), run;
find -name *mojang*
(or some other app name)
That will list everywhere on your phone it is. Might help narrow it down.
-Nipqer

i had the same problem before and erasing them completely in titanium backup helped

Thanks for the suggestion, and sorry for the delayed response... Would I find options to uninstall these in Backup/Restore? I don't see those apps in Titanium there.
I used find and grep -l to search as well and couldn't find these. The only entries I have found about them are in packages.xml.

[Q] Titanium Backup Integrate Feature

I RAN A BATCH OF THE INTEGRATE FEATURE AND ALL WENT SMOOTH. I SAVED AROUND 60+ MB OF APP SYSTEM SPACE RIGHT OFF THE BAT. ONE ISSUE I'M HAVING, IS A FORCE CLOSE ISSUE. WITH "Qik" IN PARTICULAR. I HAVE LOOKED THIS ISSUE UP AND HAVE READ SIMILAR THREADS REGARDING THE INTEGRATE FEATURE AND FORCE CLOSES THAT OCCUR DUE TO THIS. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE "Qik" APP PRE-INSTALLED IS NAMED SOMETHING LIKE "SPRINTQIK......." AND THE UPDATE FROM THE MARKET IS "COM.QIK....." I AM THINKING THAT THIS IS WHAT IS CAUSING THE ISSUE, BUT I AM UNSURE. DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW I COULD GET THE NEWEST QIK APP ADDED TO MY ROM WITHOUT ANY ISSUE?
THANKS IN ADVANCE!

To be honest, the EVO has a ton of space for /system and there's not much reason to "save" space with the integrate feature. But as for your problem, try integrating it yourself by decompressing the ZIP, copying over the APK, re-ZIPping, then sign.
Hell, a pastebin'd logcat of the FC would probably be useful.

lol ive typed all caps before and the forum automatically formatted it for me. Anyways, i understand that the evo has enough memory, but the more free memory is always better. how do i get a log cat. (please dont say adb, i have no experience lol.)

Yes, adb. What makes you think more free is even better?? If you have all the apps you want and used installed and still have free space, there shouldnt be a problem.

Having more free space isn't "better", there's no good or bad thing about it unless you screw with the partitioning and allocate more space to say, /cache and /data. And yes, you have to use adb to get the logcat. Just download the Android SDK installer (yes, there's an installer now), open a command prompt, cd to the platform-tools folder wherever it installed (something like "C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools" iirc), then run "adb logcat > %userprofile%\Desktop\logcat.txt" to output the log to your desktop.

Words With Friends and CM7. Problem.

So starting yesterday, I am met with an error screen after launching Words with Friends.
At first I see the main screen of the game, but then in flicks to the screenshot you see and won't load the game properly.
I've tried rolling back my WWF update, as well as stopping and uninstalling AdFree.
No dice. Any ideas?

looks like your host file may be the problem? The highlighted blue text looks like a url for trying to grab an ad Try backing up the /system/etc/hosts file then replace it with one that just has the following:
127.0.0.1 localhost
I'm just guessing though
I had the same problem. Running AdFree, I used the revert option and it rolled back the host file. I no longer get that popup. But the Ads show at the bottom of the screen now :/

i actually completely uninstalled AdFree for the time being. I am still getting this problem intermittently.
Could some of the options used by AdFree still be saved and running even though the physical app isn't present?

Yes. Did you try resetting the hosts file like was suggested?
This isn't a CM issue. This is an AdFree issue.
I can't even get words with friends to open for more then 2 seconds on my evo with cm7 without force closing
so be happy

Heh, I can't get Words to run for more than an hour without draining my battery.

^^ this is what you'll want to do.
use Root Explorer or adb (if you've got it) and go to /system/etc/hosts
If you're on adb, a quick check for your specific problem would be
Code:
#cat /system/etc/hosts | grep mydas
(the grep section will single out this one host)
If you get anything back, your problem is AdFree. It may be uninstalled but your hosts file is still messed up (which is how AdFree works). Back up hosts file with:
Code:
# cp /system/etc/hosts /system/etc/hosts.old
and then reset your hosts file:
Code:
# cat 'localhost 127.0.0.1' > /system/etc/hosts
that should get you squared away

Delete pre-installed apps on W10M

Is there a way of uninstalling preinstalled apps on WM10? Like Xbox, FeedBack etc.
First, why? Second, no.
exactly, this not as android bloatware.
Why not? And, why not? This is just like Android bloatware.

you dont have a clue how Windows working... just disable notifications in XBOX settings and you disabled app working in background.
you cant uninstall XBOX because is part of Microsoft account and you need him
Obviously, I don't know how it can be done, I wouldn't have asked otherwise. But I know that powershell and remove-appxpackage can be used on W10, so I wondered if there is a similar way for W10M. There must be one.

Hi
you can't "uninstall" but you can disable the installation during the 1st boot!
with the full MTP access you can delete the *.provxml files used to install those apps , then do a hard reset!
provxml files are stored in those folders:
Code:
PROGRAMS/PHONEPROVISIONER_OEM/OEM
PROGRAMS\PHONEPROVISIONER\Microsoft
PROGRAMS/DUMIGRATIONPROVISIONEROEM/provxml
PROGRAMS/DUMIGRATIONPROVISIONERMICROSOFT/provxml
PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Provisioning\Microsoft
PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\OEM\Public\PreloadedApps\tier3Apps
Windows\system32\Provisioning\Microsoft
PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Xaps
PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Provisioning\OEM
PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Multivariant\Apps

Thank you for your answer!
I was hoping for something simpler, like tricking the App Manager to uninstall them.

Question Need to restore photo editor app

Hi all,
I have deleted default photo editor in my A52s 5g phone using adb because I want to install photo editor from elsewhere which may support object eraser which the default app was not supporting.
Since then, i am not able to install it back and get the error message as shown in attach images. I have tried apk mirror and tried to install same version number.

The same photo editor app is working fine in secure mode. The version i can see there is 3.1. 09.41.
I'm using Android 13, One UI 5.
Kernel version
5.4.147-qgki-25280849-abA528BXXU1DVK5
#1 Thu Nov 10 10:56:13 KST 2022. Build number
TP1A.220624.014.A528BXXU1DVK5.
Is there any method with which I can install/restore get this photo editor app?
Thanks for any suggestion/help!
It's not deleted so you can reinstall it. Enable it with the correct ADB command. Or a factory reset will purge the ADB edits from the user partition. The app still resides on the rom, it's simple not loading at start up.

Can you please tell me the adb command to enable it back? Because I can't afford to factory reset the phone.
Thank you!

No clue, sorry. I run a Package Disabler instead.
Some others here likely know though. Try this thread.
Thanks again for giving a clue in your previous comment that the apps still in the rom and it is not completely gone from the phone and correct adb command can bring it back. With that, I searched more and found a video how to do it correctly and photo editor is back...finally!
For those who are in same situation, the adb command in the adb shell:
Code:
pm install-existing package
where package is name of the app, in my case it was: com.sec.android.mimage.photoretouching
The post can be marked solved now by admins.

Is it normal for Samsung galaxy to have protected data folder named user_de for a52s. I can understand default system and one user data folder.
Reason for asking is I'm trying to recover my phone from hacking ( already tried removing unnecessary system apps for user 0 using adb tools but I couldn't do anything for user_de. Someone is able to remotely change app permissions, force find my device, enable parental control and so on.
I checked ADB max users it shows only one user and hence worried about protected data folder under user_de. I can understand if system account is protected
I have checked and don't have Google play developer console activated, also deleted registered Google and Samsung accounts.
Any answer would be welcome. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure about the other user but honestly, I would just reflash it if it has been hacked. It would probably be the easier method anyways. Let me know if you would like to reflash it and I'll answer any questions.
