[Q] Cannot restore my nandroid backup after resizing SD-EXT - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have been using Leedroid 3.3.3R5 on my Desire. Yesterday I wanted to give a try to another Custom ROM (RevolutionROM 3.0 xmas edition). I was supposed to S-OFF my phone and then increase the size of my SD-EXT partition to 1024MB in order to install it. So I did it. I first S-OFFed using the Revolutionary tool. During the process, the Revolutionary tool also asked if I want to update Clockworkmod Recovery. It didn't sound like a bad idea, so I made the CWM update too. (it was "Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7" before the update, now it is "Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4").
After S-OFF and CWM update, I resized my SD-EXT directly from CWM (Advanced > Partition SD Card) to 1024MB. Of course I had already copied everything on my SD card including my nandroid backup to my PC. After CWM increased the size of SD-EXT partition, I copied everything back to my SD card.
So I was ready to restore my nandroid backup. First I formatted each partition in "mounts and storage" menu of CWM. Then I restored my backup. However, it goes into a bootloop now. I tried this several times: format > restart > restore, but it didn't help.
Do you think I did too many changes at once, so that my nandroid backup is not compatible anymore?
Ercan

i may be wrong here:
if you partitioned originally with cwm 2.5.0.7, it will be an ext3 partition
with cwm 4.1.0.4 i think it creates ext4, which is why it might be incompatible.
i would recommend switching to 4EXT recovery, flash it through fastboot as you're now S-OFF and you can't boot into a ROM.
i think there is an option to force nandroid restore to ext4, not tried this before.
if this doesn't work 4EXT can convert the partition back to ext3, then try restoring it.
and if this doens't work, format and repartition the card from scratch using gparted, creating an ext3 partition. then try restoring...
you've done the smart thing and copied your backup to PC, so this is easily recoverable

Looks to me like you did most things right. I think I read somewhere that partitioning thru CWM can be unstable though...
I would also suggest you try Gparted, which is the most common, and reliable, method of partitioning. All you do is download the ISO and burn (not copy, burn!) to a CD, then boot your computer from this disc.
Making sure to backup your SD again before you start, use Gparted to format the SD, so you have a clean slate to work with. When you load gparted, a series of code will scroll on screen for a few minutes (don't freak out like I did, all is well ) Once started, you need to find your SD card from the drop down menu's. You should recognise it by it's size...be careful not to select your PC hard drive!
Now it's just a matter of formatting then using the sliding bar to set your partitions. You will want to make one the Ext4 and the remaining FAT32, labelling both as primary. Don't stress about meg or two of uncommitted. You can play around a little if you need, before having to commit to any actions, so just click here and there until you are sure you've got it all right. If you have a spare card, practice with that, otherwise, you can always format again and start over... When done, reload SD and restore your nandroid.
Also, ditch CWM and install 4Ext Recovery control from the Market
E: I should have mentioned. All this is much easier if you use a card reader, rather than leaving the SD in your phone....

I found THIS
It says to use 512meg Ext3, but no one has used that size since, like...2011, or something, so just go with 1024meg.
Also, steps 1, 2 and 3 don't matter if you have a card reader.
This is the tute I used when I first partitioned with gparted and imo, pretty easy to follow.

You trying to restore a backup made with CWM 2.5.0.7 with Revolutionary 4.0 now by any chance?

[Q] Help! partitioning ext3 / installing amonra

Hi all!
As a last resort i'll be asking my question here.
I'm currently running the stock 2.2 rom with root access and clockworkmod recovery. I've had this setup for a long time now. Today i got my 8gb class6 card and i thought i'd change to a Desire HD rom for a change.
So far (5 hours into the process), i've only managed to what seemed the easyest: ..partition my sd card!
I currently have the following:
7gb fat32
1gb ext2
32mb swap
I have tried everything i could find but i simply cannot get this thing to upgrade to ext3 and then ext4. I do not have a card reader at hand so i'll have to do it within the phone.
The problems i'm facing after struggling for 2 hours to get parted working:
- no upgrade_fs script.
- tune2fs giving a unknown command error
I've been playing arround with this for about an hour when i switched to trying to install AmonRA recovery as i read this could upgrade your ext partition aswell. Problems i faced when trying to flash this were:
- unrevoked: internal error, unable to unlock nand.
- flash recovery app: error running command.
- flash_image commands: whole bunch of write errors and in the end a no space left error.
- rom manager: alternate recovery's greyed out, even after countless reinstalls and 'flash clockworkmod first' -tricks.
- fastboot: remote: vertification error.
- terminal app: flash_image not found.
And probably a bunch more i forgot..
I'm thinking of simply installing a RUU and do the whole rooting process again, and then installing amonra. For now i've recovered a clockworkmod backup i made and put back my old sdcard.
I hope there's someone that can help me!
Kind regards,
Jeroen
Use something like gparted or Easus or what ever it's called to partition the SD card.

Done this, but gparted only allows creation of ext2. The problem im having is upgrading it to ext3!
GParted allows to create all kind of EXT partition (including EXT3). Use the latest LIVE CD or USB version. I upgraded my EXT3 to 4 via GParted.

Oh i did not know that, i thought it only allowed up to ext2.
But dont you need a cardreader for that? Because i dont have one at hand right now
No, don't need a card reader. Best way is to boot into recovery and mount the SD Card. You can try via the Disk Drive option, but it gave me wrong readings (since the EXT partition was in use by the system), so not recommended.

Thank you!!!
I feel so stupid for struggling for hours yesterday. Only took me 5 minutes with GParted USB. Running the HD rom now!
I partitioned my SD with Amon Ra then selected ext2 to ext3, but it failed. When I moved the log to the SD card and read it on my PC it said there was no ext. I redid the partition, again with Amon Ra, then selected ext2 to ext3 and it worked. Just figured I'd let people know the ole try again method could work if you get here.

In a couple of weeks, you will be posting about ext not working properly.
Only partition your sd-card with 4ext recovery or Gparted.

SD card works in windows but not in Recovery

so here is the deal. did s-off today, had a FAT32+ EXT4 on my sdcard. i tried to install rcmixS (cm7 hboot) but i got a bootloop. so i read it might help to format ext4 to ext3, and there was a flashable .zip that was supposed to do it. flashed the zip and after that my EXT partition no longer works (not even in gparted - like it wasnt there, 1gb of storage just isnt visible) and my FAT32 works only in windows... if i enable usb mass storage in CWM 2.5.1.8 i can copy files to SD but then in recovery it says 'no files found' when i want to flash a rom.
so i took my second SD card, it worked in CWM, so i ran gparted and did FAT32+EXT3 (no .zip's this time) and the same thing happend, but this time i can still see EXT3 in gparted, formatted it back to FAT32 but still windows can see it but not the recovery...
gosh help me please :<
Flash a newer recovery, might stop this issue. Also, recovery is gay and soemtimes files don't appear for me so I just reboot the recovery. If you want a quick fix for the partitions, just boot into your rom you have installed, go to Settings > Storage > Erase SD. It will wipe the lot and just put it all to a single FAT32 partition. You will need to format again but at least if partitions go missing, you can do this and you just partition it again.
since i had no rom when my sd broke i ran a RUU, and formatted SD from android, and it worked ! 1GB that was M.I.A. is now back, big thanks man!
so now i am rooting with unrevoked and cwm 2.5.0.7 which never let me down
so while s-offing again, can i stay with 2.5.0.7 or des it have to be 2.5.1.8 ?

[Q] Q(s) does cwm 3.0.0.5 restore/backup sd-ext

Hi,
I searched various forums but cant find an answer to this.
Does cwm 3.0.0.5 backup and produce an sd-ext.img?
I recently got a replacement sd card, so I did a nandroid backup after I flashed cwm 3.0.0.5.
I copied this to my laptop, and g parted my new sd to have 2 partitions fat 32 first and the last 2 gb as ext3, as per the requirement for modaco no sense kitchen rom (a2sd+ version).
New sd in desire, I copied the whole clockworkmod folder onto the new fat32 partition.
Wiped everything I could using recovery (clockworkmod folder still remains present).
Tried to restore but got a message at the end that "sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restore of /sd-ext. Restore complete."
When I boot the desire gets past initial alpharev s-off replacement image I have (I have s-off), then presents a blank screen. This does eventually boot. However all apps are not installed. I assume that the original dalvik cache was not transferred and was reconstructed by the restore with what it had.
Is this a known problem with 3.0.0.5?
Is there another version I can flash which doesnt have this problem?
Just to provide all possible info require (I think). My desire is PVT4.
Thanks in advance.
I used CWM 2.5.0.7 from the alpharev release.
In my backup folder, I have sd-ext.img present.
I created this sd-ext with CWM itself. (I did a backup of the sd and formatted it)
So no doubt that CWM 3.0.0.5 did the same.
First, check if you actually have the sd-ext.img file.
Second, you might want to try to update to CWM 3, since the alpharev release is 2.5.1.8.
Well CWM will create the sd-ext.img backup if it detects that the partition is there. If out doesn't detect it then it will skip it like it did. There is nothing wrong with cwm at all and out works. You could upgrade your recovery to 3.2.0.1 but it won't make a difference really. Only way around it is to use titanium backup as it will restore straight to sd-ext

Hi,
I used gparted to firstly create a fat 32 partition then secondly a ext3 partition (for apps) on a new sd card. I cant see a sd-ext.img file in the nandroid backup file produced by cwm 3.0.0.5 so I assume that it cannot detect the ext3 partition.
Do you have any idea as to why this is? Can I have done anything to help cwm "see" the partition.
I'll update to 3.2.0.1 to try if the same problem occurs in that release.
I take your point that I could use titanium backup to achieve the same. I dont really want to do this as as I find it a pain to re-install the large number of apps I like to carry about on my desire. The problem is that I know what runs well on a ext-3 partition and what only runs on int or system space. I only allow apps into system or int if I really them to be there so this means thatyou have to manually install each one of them to the relevant space. Also I use ext3 for dalvik cache (seems to improve performance).
I cant see a reason why 3.0.0.5 didnt see the ext3 partition and ideally I would like a nandroid recovery solution that could auto detect all partitions if present (as I guess many others would).
I'll update this thread when I have run through the update to 3.2.0.1 and done some more testing.
I think CWM doesn't backup ext-partition if there's no data
try the old CWM.. the one comes while you root with unrevoked3 .. coz I have old CWM and it does backup sd-ext.

[Q] Can't mount SD card From Recovery ---> can't startup the phone

Goodmorning Sirs,
I have a strange problem...
My desire is happily runnig InsertCoin 1.0.8 with CM7 boot since months..
I am running also CWM recovery 3.0.2.8...
I'm giving a step by step description, in order to get you aware of possible upsets.
This morning I decide to install S2Ext program and strangely i found that
EXT partition was not recognized.. I reboot and have the same problem in S2E but everything was running fine... I was fearing that something gonna happen so I decide to have a nandroid backup to get clear that if something goes wrong I can restore all it back.
I successfully did a nandroid backup..
but..
after reboot I'm stuck at splash screen....
worried I went to recovery and I could not mount the sd card..
so no nandroid restore and nothing no sd no boot (A2SD+)..
Either usb mount is not working..
I verified that FAT32 partiotion on sdcard could be read from my laptop..
WHAT CAN I DO?
It's a recovery problem?
Sounds like the ext partition has become corrupted, so nandroid/cwm won't be able to write to it properly.
Stick the card in a PC reader, then run gparted on it - recreate/format the ext partition at the end (without formatting the FAT), then stick it back in phone.
Nandroid should then be able to restore backed up .img to it.
See my reply here :- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176663
Easily fixed.

[Q] CWM Recovery can't backup sd-ext partition (via Nandroid)

I created the SDCard partitions using ClockWorkMod v5.0.2.0, now when I try to take a Nandroid backup,it works through all the partitions, until sd-ext and gives the following error :
"Could not mount sd-ext. sd-ext backup may not be supported on this device. Skipping backup of sd-ext" followed by the usual "Generating md5 sum..."

I have a 512 MB Ext .Phone recognizes the sd-ext without any problem. I have mounted and configured it using S2E.
WTH is going wrong ?Any ideas ?
Thanks

S2E here, too - how did you partition the card - CWM? (I'd guess usually that shouldn't lead into problems...)
Did you also mount the partition manually in CWM? (I'm pretty sure that I didn't - but that's still an open question / if I have to / should) - what CWM version?

Yep,obviously,I used CWM 5.0.2.0 for the partition of the card.
I am using CWM 5.0.2.0 for the Nandroid backup and I have also tried via ROM manager to no avail.
SD-Ext is already mounted
Hbu?Have you achieved the Nandroid backup(including ext) without any problem ?What CWM did you use ?
I just don't understand why CWM can't back it up when it was created by itslef.
Does CWM 5.0.2.0 supports ext3/4 ?
I am pretty sure I created ext3 partiton using it and now when I mount my SD card via ADB,it shows the file system as ext2

Have you made nandroid with cwm 5.0.2.0 ?
Yep
Then surely it looks some issue with your SD-ext,I would recommend you to repartition using minitool partition wizard,For now you could use app extractor app to restore your apps/data from nandroid.
you can try cwm 5.0.2.8 (the latest available) this is the link of the tread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566677
I know that the recovery have some problems creating / formatting partitions ext (eg creates ext4 but reformat in ext3 when you wipe), then I suggest GParted utility on the ubuntu live cd to partition the microsd.

BTW,I have already backed up my applications using TB and the app data should be in internal memory as it was not moved to ext.
I just want to have the recovery fixed to backup.
You can't just copy the whole SD card on the PC as it can't read the sdext# directory.
Most of the people recommend CWM for the partiton of the card and they didn't have any problem with that.Which recovery did you use ?
Doh! I am clueless
tb save the app to a folder on fat32 (microsd) You must backup this partition before reformatting the entire micro sd or use gparted to erase/formatting only the ext partition

I prefer FASTBOOT
I had been using cwm 5.0.2.8 for a long time with no issues while backing up and restoring nandroid including sd-ext.
But due to mirroring bug in temporary 2.5.0.7 with 5.0.2.8,i downgraded to v5.0.2.0.
From then I started to have problems in restoring nandroids made previously with v5.0.2.8.I did everything again(partitioning, backup and restore) with 5.0.2.0,and it all started to work as before again.
So,I jumped to a conclusion that if you create sd-ext with specific cwm version then you should use the same version to backup or restore nandroids.
I know this sounds silly but proved to be good in my case.I might be wrong though.

I'm using 4.0.1.4 - by accident because of that wrong PC49IMG file in the index thread and I'm really too lazy to update.
Re. your problems: There are a few reports that CWM (all versions) sometimes fails with wiping/formatting (or does it a bit dirty) so I'd guess this very likely could also happen with partitioning (if I'm correct the partitions will be wiped and formatted also, then). I really would just repartition again - and afterwards I'd do a complete wipe/format of the sd-ext - just to make sure...
Keep in mind that a sdcard is not a hard drive...
Hello, first calm down, you have just installed a recovery
second probably the trouble (as you have already said) is the card, the formatting you? if you do not want to lose the data on your ext partition with gparted can copy them like a fat partition
even if given the situation I suggest you start from scratch. deep Formatting
partition with ubuntu live cd and flash the rom (I understand that will not boot up right? The ext partition is recognized as the first boot). There is a possibility that the micro sd does not work well anyway good luck I hope I can help you
