SD card works in windows but not in Recovery - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so here is the deal. did s-off today, had a FAT32+ EXT4 on my sdcard. i tried to install rcmixS (cm7 hboot) but i got a bootloop. so i read it might help to format ext4 to ext3, and there was a flashable .zip that was supposed to do it. flashed the zip and after that my EXT partition no longer works (not even in gparted - like it wasnt there, 1gb of storage just isnt visible) and my FAT32 works only in windows... if i enable usb mass storage in CWM 2.5.1.8 i can copy files to SD but then in recovery it says 'no files found' when i want to flash a rom.
so i took my second SD card, it worked in CWM, so i ran gparted and did FAT32+EXT3 (no .zip's this time) and the same thing happend, but this time i can still see EXT3 in gparted, formatted it back to FAT32 but still windows can see it but not the recovery...
gosh help me please :<

Flash a newer recovery, might stop this issue. Also, recovery is gay and soemtimes files don't appear for me so I just reboot the recovery. If you want a quick fix for the partitions, just boot into your rom you have installed, go to Settings > Storage > Erase SD. It will wipe the lot and just put it all to a single FAT32 partition. You will need to format again but at least if partitions go missing, you can do this and you just partition it again.

since i had no rom when my sd broke i ran a RUU, and formatted SD from android, and it worked ! 1GB that was M.I.A. is now back, big thanks man!
so now i am rooting with unrevoked and cwm 2.5.0.7 which never let me down
so while s-offing again, can i stay with 2.5.0.7 or des it have to be 2.5.1.8 ?

Desire stuck in boot loop

Hello, tonight i tried some thing (i just wanted to change rom), but i made some mistakes... now i cannot boot my phone, it keeps rebooting. I have Leedroid ROM and it keeps rebooting after PC-boot like animation. The only thing i can access is the back button + power recovery. What can i do?
Thanks!
I have tried to wipe the cache and system, and solo deleted storage (hard reset)... but same point. I think that if i can put a update.zip on the sdcard i can flash it... but at the moment i don't have a sd card reader. Is the phone dead?
No your phone isnt dead
1. If you have a nandroid on your sd card just enter hboot and recover your system.
2. Otherwise you can perform an md5 check of the rom you downloaded and wish to flash. (just to make sure its not corrupted, i suppose your trying to flash leedroid) Enter hboot wipe everything >system wipe>cache>dalvic and then relash the rom. Oh and make sure your sd card is partitioned correctly ... a2sd, D2EXt ...
3. If problem persists go into hboot mount your phone as storage copy another rom you would like to try and then flash this, you can just follow the steps in no2 abouve again.
This should solve your problem!
The thing that i have done BAD is the format of the card... or better, i have done right things but i'm almost sure something was wrong. I formatted it from gparted, then created a 3GB FAT32 partition, and with the remaining space i created a ext4 partition. Then, i moved the files needed for the rom that i wanted to flash (MIUI) in the fat32 partition, as i seen that the ext4 part was mounted read only (dunno why).
IMPORTANT: I have done all this mounting the SD card via Clockwork recovery.
When i selected the voice "flash a zip selecting from memory card" (or something )... it said "cannot find a valid zip".
Then the only choice for me was to reboot and... that is
Now i cannot mount SD, as i don't have (at home) a SD card reader and i don't have access to CWM recovery.

[Q] Help! partitioning ext3 / installing amonra

Hi all!
As a last resort i'll be asking my question here.
I'm currently running the stock 2.2 rom with root access and clockworkmod recovery. I've had this setup for a long time now. Today i got my 8gb class6 card and i thought i'd change to a Desire HD rom for a change.
So far (5 hours into the process), i've only managed to what seemed the easyest: ..partition my sd card!
I currently have the following:
7gb fat32
1gb ext2
32mb swap
I have tried everything i could find but i simply cannot get this thing to upgrade to ext3 and then ext4. I do not have a card reader at hand so i'll have to do it within the phone.
The problems i'm facing after struggling for 2 hours to get parted working:
- no upgrade_fs script.
- tune2fs giving a unknown command error
I've been playing arround with this for about an hour when i switched to trying to install AmonRA recovery as i read this could upgrade your ext partition aswell. Problems i faced when trying to flash this were:
- unrevoked: internal error, unable to unlock nand.
- flash recovery app: error running command.
- flash_image commands: whole bunch of write errors and in the end a no space left error.
- rom manager: alternate recovery's greyed out, even after countless reinstalls and 'flash clockworkmod first' -tricks.
- fastboot: remote: vertification error.
- terminal app: flash_image not found.
And probably a bunch more i forgot..
I'm thinking of simply installing a RUU and do the whole rooting process again, and then installing amonra. For now i've recovered a clockworkmod backup i made and put back my old sdcard.
I hope there's someone that can help me!
Kind regards,
Jeroen
Use something like gparted or Easus or what ever it's called to partition the SD card.

Done this, but gparted only allows creation of ext2. The problem im having is upgrading it to ext3!
GParted allows to create all kind of EXT partition (including EXT3). Use the latest LIVE CD or USB version. I upgraded my EXT3 to 4 via GParted.

Oh i did not know that, i thought it only allowed up to ext2.
But dont you need a cardreader for that? Because i dont have one at hand right now
No, don't need a card reader. Best way is to boot into recovery and mount the SD Card. You can try via the Disk Drive option, but it gave me wrong readings (since the EXT partition was in use by the system), so not recommended.

Thank you!!!
I feel so stupid for struggling for hours yesterday. Only took me 5 minutes with GParted USB. Running the HD rom now!
I partitioned my SD with Amon Ra then selected ext2 to ext3, but it failed. When I moved the log to the SD card and read it on my PC it said there was no ext. I redid the partition, again with Amon Ra, then selected ext2 to ext3 and it worked. Just figured I'd let people know the ole try again method could work if you get here.

In a couple of weeks, you will be posting about ext not working properly.
Only partition your sd-card with 4ext recovery or Gparted.

[Q] SD Card Problems With Clockwork Recovery [Q]

SD Card Problems With Clockwork Recovery
Hi there XDA, basically everytime I have an SD-EXT partition on my phone (i always, always make them using Linux manually) if I format my SD-Card (which should only format the Fat32 partition, I run into a big issue. My SD-Card will un-mount, possibly format i don't know, then it won't remount. If I connect my phone to windows the SD-Card has all its partitions removed. Very strange?
Anyway I decided to switch to Oxygen 2.0.1 this morning, as it's a much more stable rom, and anyway I performed what I said above on Froyo 2.1 (DeFrost) and the SD-Card wouldn't mount, when I noticed that the SD-Card didn't have any partitions I formatted it using Windows. I then placed the update.zip file of Oxygen onto the root of my SD-Card.
I proceeded to Clockwork Recovery and selected the option 'Select .Zip from SD Card' and I was shocked to see something saying No Files Found. We I have tried everything to sort this out, and absolutely nothing seems to be working? I have used a Ubuntu Live CD to try and completely wipe and re-format my SD-Card which completed sucessfully, but no joy, i've tried all the options on Clockwork Recovery, nothing works, I used a 2GB SD-Card to install Oxygen and this worked fine, once the phone was booted everything would work including the 8GB Card if I switched them. I know I should just put up with this, but I need to fix this.
Does anyone know how I can get my card to work again thanks.

alpharev recovery doesnt find zip files.

Hello everyone,
I'm stuck again, need your help!
I was trying to repartion the EXT on the sd card, with Gparted. I thought everything went find, but afterwards when I tried to boot: I got stuck on alpharev bootscreen (why so serious).
I tried, clearing cash, dalvik, system/data etc...
And I also don't seem to be able to flash zip files! They won't be recognized be the recovery? I just get the message "no files found". I really don't understand, I copy the zip file (containing InsertCoin 1.0.8) to the root, but the phone doens't see it.
I have CM7 HBOOT and CWM-AplhaRev Recovery v2.5.1.8
Help please! What should I do.
Prob messed up your SD card maybe. Check to see if it works on your PC. If not, just partition it FAT32 then start again.
I tried to do the GParted thing again. It didnt work?
I made 2 partitions (1 FAT32 en 1 EXT4), would it make a difference if I only made 1 FAT32 like you suggested?

That will solve the issue you posted, but you won't be able to use data2sd or similar ad these require the EXT partition
I'm a little confused, are you saying that the EXT partition is somehow causing these problems?
edit: maybe I should just flash another recovery? Amon RA 2.0.0 maybe?
no don t flash anything til you have a complete working phone ... fix the sd card issue before. make sure fat32 and ext4 are primary partition
in gparted fat32 should be labelled LBA.
try to mount your sd on recovery, if it s well done you should be able to do so.
I'm back up!!! Finally! Thanks to everyone helping me.
Seems like Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 was causing the problem, it doenst support EXT4... I flashed Amon RA 2.0.0 and the zip files were recognized again.
@fragargon: didn't label partitions as LBA though, why is this needed?
Thanks!

[Q] Install zip from sdcard in recovery => "no files found"

Hi,
I had a stock HTC Desire. These are the steps I took:
- First I rooted using unrevoked. That worked perfectly.
- Then I did S-off using alpharev. No problem at all.
- Next I wanted to have a2sd (or mount2sd or app2sd+ or data2ext, WTF is the difference???) to finally be released of the "no memory" messaged (HTC, what were you thinking??). I didn't want to add init.d support to my stock rom, so I picked this rom, which had it built in.
- Before I installed that ROM, I used Gparted to make two partitions on the 4 gb sd card: 3 gb FAT32 and 1 gb EXT4.
- Then I installed the Cronmod ROM. During installation it asked if I had an EXT partition, I said yes.
The phone booted fine so I started to install my apps. I soon noticed my internal memory became to small again! Why wasn't that data2ext thing working?? I remembered from the rooting faq that some ROMs don't work with EXT4 partitions, so let's see if I can change it to EXT3.
I booted into Gparted again and here things started to go bad: there was nothing there! There was 2.74 gb of unallocated space!!!
Not only was there just 2.74 gb on a 4 gb card, all partitions were gone!
- I made two partitions again: 1.76 FAT32 and 999 mb EXT3. I would try to find a solution to get the invisible 1.3 gb on the sd card back later. First I wanted to have this data2ext thing working.
- When I tried to reboot I got stuck on the Alpharev "Why so serious" screen.
- wipe data/factory reset didn't work either, because I got the "Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(No such file or directory)" error. Why is that much going wrong??
- Googling learned I probably had an SD card brick, so I followed this guide. That didn't work at all. I did these two command: fastboot oem enableqxdm 0(unblock your sd-card)
fastboot oem eraseconfig(fix misc partition).
- Finally I did a "partition SD card" in recovery and that got it to recognize my sd card again.
- It still hangs on the "why so serious" screen though. So maybe I need to reinstall the rom? I put the rom on the fat32 partition, but "install zip from SD card" in recovery gives the error "no files found". Also, in HBoot, for a split second it shows some errors: something about missing zip/img files and then "no image or wrong image"
According to the Troubleshooting FAQ I need to do this:
To fix a bootloop/ stuck on HTC Screen:
[STEP1]- do a battery pull to power off the device (as this is the only way to do so when stuck in a bootloop)
[STEP2]- hold the VOLUME DOWN button and the POWER button to boot into the bootloader
[STEP3]- use the VOLUME UP/DOWN buttons to navigate, and POWER to select. Navigate to RECOVERY.
[STEP4]- select "mounts & storage" and then select the following options
[STEP5]- format boot
[STEP6]- format system
[STEP7]- format data
[STEP8]- format cache
[STEP9]- format sd-ext (IF YOU HAVE IT)
[IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A BACKUP]
[STEP10b]- go back to the main menu, select "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard", and flash a ROM which you KNOW works. If you have none, try my failsafe: CyanogenMod
- reboot system now
I did all that, but as explained, it doesn't find any files on the sdcard!
This is the info I have in HBoot:
---AlphaRev---
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.93.0001
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.27
So these are my problems:
- Stuck at "Why so serious" alpharev screen.
- My SD card reports only 2.74 gb size, while it's 4 gb.
- I can't install zip files from the SD card: "no files found", while I can see they are there in windows explorer...
Please help :-(
FINALLY got it to boot again by doing this:
- recovery > advanced > partition SD card
- select 512 mb recovery, 0 mb swap
- next put the rom on the SD card from windows explorer
- install the cronmod (it could finally find the zip!!!)
- during installation select that I have an EXT partition
I can now boot my phone, but just to be sure, I checked in Gparted and I now have only one big chunck of unallocated space with size 3.22 gb :-s
How could I put the zip file on there? Where is the EXT? WTF is going on?
Do you have a microSD to SD converter so that you can view your microSD on your pc? If so you might want to check if you can acces the unlocated space on your PC and format all of it back to FAT32 before trying again.

No, unfortunately not. There's one underway, ordered online.
It looks like damaged card for me, try it with other micro sd if you have one

But how did I manage to damage an SD card?
Is there any way to fix it?
You can test your card by using H2testw (google search should turn it up).
Odd you're getting problems with Gparted - never failed me yet. I wouldn't recommend using recovery to partition, although 4EXT Touch does seem to work. You mounting sd card in recovery in order to partition using Gparted?

Thanks, I'll try that H2testw when I get home.
I already tried SD Formatter (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/), to no avail.
Yes, I mount the SD card from within CWM recovery and then format with Gparted.
I have had the same problem with one of my sd-cards.
I guess it was just the card, which wasn't completely compatible, because with other cards, I didn't had the problem.
I had no problem using it with just one fat32 partition, but as soon as I made the second partition, it failed. It had something to do with alignment. Try to experiment with that...
4EXT recovery was able to kind of revive the SD Card. It formatted it to a total of 3.7 gb, so still quite a lot short of the 4 gb the card should be.
At least it is working now.
Strange... first time I've had bad experience with Gparted.
3.7 gig is quite normal.
4EXT can also check alignment of your partitions....
