Copying EXT3 partitions across SD cards??

Can anybody tell me if there is any way of co-copying the EXT3 partition from one SD Card to another using a PC?
I currently have a 16G card and use a cooked rom with A2SD but wish to use a 32G card and want to copy all my A2SD installed apps across so changing the card is seamless.
Also one other question, if a format the card in FAT32 using a PC, will that remove the EXT partition?

eazy mode, create a nandroid backup + ext. copy it to your pc put in bigger SD copy nandroid on it and do a nandroid restore.

thanks for the advice, that should come handy sooner or later

Or if you have a Linux Live CD lying around then you can just mount your sd card in Linux and it will mount FAT32 and also EXT partition so you can just copy the contents.
You have a choice of methods although Nandroid is the most obvious choice. Nandroid. Copy sd fat32 part contents to pc then copy to new card. Nandroid restore.

Install clockwork recovery and make a backup, then insert your new SD , create a Ext3 partition using clockwork recovery. Copy your backup from the old to the new card and then Use unrevoked recovery to restore the Ext3 partition.

Thanks for all the advice, haven’t used nandroid backup yet but have ClockworkMod Recovery flashed so will give it a go!

Use ROM manager and select partition sd card.
Easiest way imo ;D

This does not work. I did what you said, but when I do a nandriod restore it gets to the bit of restoring the ext3 partition and then states that the partition does not exist and so skips it.
I think I would be able to use titanium back up to restore my apps but I can’t create an ext3 partition on my new card. The custom rom I am using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741663 wont boot with out an ext3 partition and the only way I know of creating an ext3 partition is though rom manager which requires the phone to be booted
So I am stuck?

You will likely have to create the ext partition first in linux. Try parted magic live cd, clockwork puts it at the end of the card, not sure why but best to stick with that just in case.

hey everyone... i partitioned my SD card using rom manager.. it worked with no problems at all.. i have got a HTC Hero now... and now i dont want to use ext anymore... im having clockwork recovery.. how to partition the SD card using clockwork.. i want to make ext 0mb...
rom manager gives me a minimum option of 128mb...
your help would be highly appreciated,

Install any other rom just to partition your sd card then restore the backup!

I can never get this to work, it always says I need root privlidges to write to the new cards ext partition, and it's anyones guess to what the root password is with these Live CD's.

generally there isnt one, and if there is it would probably be "toor" (root backwards).
if you want root privelages in the file explorer what i usually do is type "sudo nautilus" from terminal (on ubuntu).
but i would just use gparted to copy both ext and fat partitions to the new sd, then expand the fat partition if the sdcard is bigger.

Fat partition has to be first, otherwise windows can't read the card. It is confused by ext which it doesn't understand.
Guess how I know ;-)

[Q] Q(s) does cwm 3.0.0.5 restore/backup sd-ext

Hi,
I searched various forums but cant find an answer to this.
Does cwm 3.0.0.5 backup and produce an sd-ext.img?
I recently got a replacement sd card, so I did a nandroid backup after I flashed cwm 3.0.0.5.
I copied this to my laptop, and g parted my new sd to have 2 partitions fat 32 first and the last 2 gb as ext3, as per the requirement for modaco no sense kitchen rom (a2sd+ version).
New sd in desire, I copied the whole clockworkmod folder onto the new fat32 partition.
Wiped everything I could using recovery (clockworkmod folder still remains present).
Tried to restore but got a message at the end that "sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restore of /sd-ext. Restore complete."
When I boot the desire gets past initial alpharev s-off replacement image I have (I have s-off), then presents a blank screen. This does eventually boot. However all apps are not installed. I assume that the original dalvik cache was not transferred and was reconstructed by the restore with what it had.
Is this a known problem with 3.0.0.5?
Is there another version I can flash which doesnt have this problem?
Just to provide all possible info require (I think). My desire is PVT4.

I used CWM 2.5.0.7 from the alpharev release.
In my backup folder, I have sd-ext.img present.
I created this sd-ext with CWM itself. (I did a backup of the sd and formatted it)
So no doubt that CWM 3.0.0.5 did the same.
First, check if you actually have the sd-ext.img file.
Second, you might want to try to update to CWM 3, since the alpharev release is 2.5.1.8.

Well CWM will create the sd-ext.img backup if it detects that the partition is there. If out doesn't detect it then it will skip it like it did. There is nothing wrong with cwm at all and out works. You could upgrade your recovery to 3.2.0.1 but it won't make a difference really. Only way around it is to use titanium backup as it will restore straight to sd-ext

Hi,
I used gparted to firstly create a fat 32 partition then secondly a ext3 partition (for apps) on a new sd card. I cant see a sd-ext.img file in the nandroid backup file produced by cwm 3.0.0.5 so I assume that it cannot detect the ext3 partition.
Do you have any idea as to why this is? Can I have done anything to help cwm "see" the partition.
I'll update to 3.2.0.1 to try if the same problem occurs in that release.
I take your point that I could use titanium backup to achieve the same. I dont really want to do this as as I find it a pain to re-install the large number of apps I like to carry about on my desire. The problem is that I know what runs well on a ext-3 partition and what only runs on int or system space. I only allow apps into system or int if I really them to be there so this means thatyou have to manually install each one of them to the relevant space. Also I use ext3 for dalvik cache (seems to improve performance).
I cant see a reason why 3.0.0.5 didnt see the ext3 partition and ideally I would like a nandroid recovery solution that could auto detect all partitions if present (as I guess many others would).
I'll update this thread when I have run through the update to 3.2.0.1 and done some more testing.

try the old CWM.. the one comes while you root with unrevoked3 .. coz I have old CWM and it does backup sd-ext.

ClockworkMod Touch 5.8.1.5 doesn't backup sd-ext (ext3) (CyanogenMod 7.2)

Hi guys!
I've just created an sd-ext partition to copy there my apps but i've noticed that ClockworkMod Touch 5.8.1.5 can't backup it (via Nandroid); it just says "No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext".
The sd-ext partition is on ext3 format and i've created it using Ubuntu (and Disk Utility).
The phone recognize the sd-ext without any problem. I've mounted and configured it using S2E.
I can even mount the sd-ext using Ubuntu.
I don't have a "mount /sd-ext" option under Clockworkmod.
I'm using CyanogenMod 7.2 on a HTC Desire HD.
I've googled a lot and seen that some people has the same problem but i haven't find a solution; usually they have an ext4 partition that isn't recognized.
Could it be because i've formatted using Ubuntu and not using ClockworkMod itself?

A friend of mine suggested me that too. If i won't be able to fix the problem with ClockworkMod i'll give a try.
What i'm sorry about is that i've bought ClockworkMod Pro and ClockworkMod Revovery Touch too and i would like to keep using them...

What is the size of the partion you created

It's 2 Gb, with 256 Mb of swap.
Don't know if it matter but the order of partitions is: SdCard Fat32 - sd-ext ext3 - swap

As a conclusion, i've switched to 4EXT Recovery, that i've also used to re-format the sdcard and create an Ext4 sd-ext.
4EXT Recovery is able to backup my sd-ext without any problem!

I have noticed the same thing as well.
Its not only CWM that has the issue also the lastest 4EXT Lastest RC9 (RC8 doesn't have this issue) and TWRP has the same issue as well.

i have a wildfire s )s-on_ hboot unlocked running hensmod7 rom, when i installed the rom it had something like 78something MB as secondary partition and link2sd accepts only when i select fat16/32 from the start menu.
i recently repartitioned the sd to ext4 (and to ext2 later) and linux swap, when i try to restore the nandroid backup, process completes but when the phone restarts it stays on the main boot animation of the rom.
when i data reset from cwm recovery menu + del cache + del delvik, Then it restarts as a new blank phone running hensmod7 fine.
so the basic problem is getting the nandroid to restore on the phone.
Any suggestions?
btw my cwm version is same as when the backups are being made.

I think you just need to reflash the recovery. After that follow the other instructions on hensemod thread to install properly. While partitioning use minitool. Make 3 partitions: fat32, 512-2gb ext2/4, 418-512 mb linux swap in that order, make all of them primary partitions.
If this doesn't solve the problem I think Ur mmc is corrupted. Or U could also use data2sd it may also be that that U dont understand the process of using link2sd.

i am pretty sure that recovery is just as good as a fresh apple .... as i have restored before ( with success off course) but the moment i repartitioned the mmc and changed it to ext4 and later to ext2 (for testing) then system stucks on boot animation, even after successful restore.

Which Rom are you using? Wipe data and other stuff first, then flash the zip of the rom, then use advanced restore to restore only data and sd-ext

well i thought its the right section to put the question of the related, we post in q&a from next time
i was using hensmod and tried restoring hensmod after repartition, will try to flash the zip and advanced restore as you have written.

converting ext3 to ext4

I realise that I should have created my ext partition as ext4 not ext3 as the newer roms seem to need it. I had a search and it seems to be a bit complicated to simply convert the partition so I have a two-part question to see if what I have in mind will work.
I use Link2sd which I like and seems to work well (other than for Swype which I now have gotten rid of).
So, will this work (and I apologise for being somlistic in my approach):
I move all my linked apps to the SDcard proper using L2SD (there's not enough room on the phone's internal memory)
I copy my entire SD card to my computer just in case
I then use 4EXT and using the option "wipe or format --> EXT3" I reformat that ext3 partition as a ext4 partition
Using L2SD I relink all the apps to the new ext4.
Otherwise, if I were to reformat and repartition the entire SD card using Gparted, can I simply drag and drop the SDcard folder I backed up on my computer back onto the SD card then relink everything with L2SD?

Copy all files to computer
Format sdcard to ext4
Copy files back
Nandrestore

Great - nice and easy. Should I move the apps to the main part of sd card first by unlinking them because I don't see the ext3 partition when I connect the phone to my computer.

The concept of doing a nandbackup is to copy thhe current status of the phone. Everything. So you relly don't need to do that.
Just make sure that the contents you see when you plug the phone to the computer is saved in the computer including the nandbackup you made.
The nand will basically take care of the files on the ext part when you restore it.

If using 4ext you only need to convert ext to ext4(it backs up automatically). If you restore a nand made with ext3 you also loose the ext4 partition so you also need to manually convert all nand backups to ext4 using 4ext. Hope this makes sense...

Put simply:
boot into 4ext recovery.
go into tools/Convert or change a backup --> ext4
convert ext
It will automatically backup ext, convert it to ext4 and then restore ext again (no data loss).
Delete all old NAND backups and start again (otherwise you'll restore your ext3 partition) or you can convert backups with 4ext (from ext3 to ext4).
Simples :victory:

How do I delete an old Nand backup - I'm looking in 4ext but can't see anything obvious or do I simply do another backup and that wipes the old one?

Using the 4ext app go into manage backups or using a file explorer go into sdcard/clockworkmod/backup and delete the corresponding folder

I have booted the phone up but now it does not want to recognise the ext partition. Links2sd suggests that the device may not support ext4 yet I know lots of Desire owners on here have that. I guess I have to revert to get my apps back that are currently showing as not loaded.

Just convert back to ext3 again using 4ext.. kernel might not support ext4

Anyone know what kernel I would need and how would I go about installing it? Is this a fairly easy and safe thing to do?

I'd say just leave it as ext3. I've never come across a ROM that don't support ext3....

I was thinking of installing this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315961 I hear it is quite a stable one and that's most important to me. It says that ext4 is required for the ROM:
(Q) I get an error ”can’t Mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 (File Exists)”.
(A) That error and others like it are generally caused by a corrupt ext partition on your SD Card. The solution is to use 4EXT recovery, gParted, or a similar tool to reformat the ext partition to ext4. Leave the FAT32 partition alone and you shouldn’t lose any data. Don't use Windows-based partition tools!
Some suggest using ext3 as it is a known quantity and most ROMS will boot with an ext3 partition, however Runnymede AIO requires an ext4 partition.
