[Q] [ICS ]ICS ON Screen Buttons - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey just wanted to know how many of you would like to see onscreen buttons on whoevers ICS rom comes out first.
I took Xboarders Preview and got them working IMO they are sleek and like a bit more than the capacitive but thats
IMO anyways also I disabled the capacitive buttons so it all onscreen just wanted to know :
What do you guys prefer? and would you like to see them enabled Im sure xboarder will have an add-on or something
like that but in case he does not provide it its not difficult at all its just a thought
what do you guys think?

I'll stick with buttons on my hercules.if i ever get another phone without buttons then I'd do that.but personally i like buttons.i used to not like capacitives but got used to them it's w.e. Really
-dark

I feel like they would be a waste of screen real estate.
The capacitive buttons are there, why not use them.

I like on screen buttons, but if our phone already has capacitive buttons then why would we just let them be there for no reason?

this. man I can't wait for ics
Hercules was here

Personally I'd want the buttons even if my phone didn't have them. My Kindle Fire has the on-screen touch buttons like the GNex, and I'm not a fan of that. I'm absolutely glad our phone doesn't have the hard keys on the outside like some other phones too. A soft touch does the trick and that's just like how I like mine.
And to expand on what was said earlier, having on-screen buttons (even though we already have capacitive) is a waste of on-screen space, wouldn't you agree? Purposely, people who bought this phone wanted a larger-than-most screen so personally I wouldn't want to waste all that valuable space.
But...I guess it would be a cool mod to have. Not for me, but I could see users jumping on and wanting to flash this mod either for novelty or general use.

Pretty much.
Samsung Galaxy Swag II

If my phone has buttons...then I do not want them duplicated on the screen. I would rather have more space for content to display.

I want the on screen button.. Im sick of holding the home button to do multitasking..

Why not make it as a zip/add on?

Because its actually easier than that its just pushing a modded framework-res.apk from adb or root explorer and rebooting
Im also tired of holding home 2 multitask n its one of the main reasons I modded fw n started thread

One thing i don't understand about the galaxy nexus

okay phones great, physical buttons are gone
but one thing i don't get
lets say your watching a video, i remember seeing a galaxy nexus, when your watching a video and make it fullscreen the on screen buttons are gone
does this mean you can't go out of the video without rotating it back to a vertical position?

I think they change to small little or invisible dots. Then you just press that area?

You make the buttons reappear by tapping any part of the screen.

Nope. Dimming and hiding the navigation bar are two different things.
Does nobody read the SDK around here? I could've sworn this site is called something something developers.

I do read through the platform changes, and I've made references to these updates many times around these parts. Not that it perpetuates lol
I feel like I or someone else should make one giant FAQ about ICS features so we might put an end to all these new threads that pop up rehashing (valid) questions.

[Q]when we get ics, does that mean the the hardware buttons will be useless?

so i was wondering after watching the software review for ics
http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/24/galaxy-nexus-hspa-review/
when ever we get the update in a 20 months or so lol, does that mean that we will not use the hardware buttons, they would be useless?

Short answer is no. For devices with hardware buttons, the on screen buttons will be hidden/disabled.
It's only for the Galaxy Nexus the haptic touchscreen button's , if your phone has hardware touch sensitive button's it'll work just fine .
thx i was just wondering =D this hype for ics is driving me nuts i want it soo bad lol
Nexus S has it and all is good.

correct, i saw already multiple ICS built for other devices, where you can basically turn it ON/OFF option to show or not show the fake soft touch buttons

Softkeys

Why have no body followed Google's example of soft keys???
It's excellent and does not fail and looks clean.
And when rooted it's the best you can have over physical.

Ask Samsung, HTC, etc. Asus has a phone with softkeys, it's called the Asus PadFone and it does some really neat things.
Because people would flip out if suddenly no high-end phones had buttons. Even the GS3 had a physical button which I think is absurd.
People are very set in their ways. Just take a look around this forum for starters. Earlier some dude wanted to burn down googleplex because the menu key was gone.
Personally I love the on-screen keys and I do also hope that they become the norm.

Variety is the spice of life. I like the fact that there can be hardware, capacitive and software buttons. I'd like to see more full keyboard phones as well...
Swypexus
I understand the S III still has it since it has the traditional large button and two small captive one.
But I was really surprise that none of the One series has soft keys. They only the menu one when it's needed. Which I think is dumb because alot of apps still use the physical one.
So they might as well added the rest of the soft keys and kill of the physical.

Iphone ringer switch? Need help.

My friend is willing to ditch his iphone for an S3, but he needs an easy solution to mimic his physical ringer switch. He needs to easily turn off his ringer from his holster. Any ideas? Thanks.
Use the volume down button to turn the ringer all the way off.

you could use an NFC sticker
Theres an app called shush that lets you program the phone so it will automatically go silent at certain times of the day that you specify.
I use setting profiles, it lets me set profiles then conditions and actions for each profuile.
It knows when im at any of my offices, at home, asleep, in a meeting (calendar item) by gps, cells, time, lots of other criteria.
Its a little sketchy to program at first, but I have moved my settings to 4 phones now and its really slick. I dont have to remember to flip a switch even.
If you pull down the notification bar there is a tab for silent /vibrate/ normal
Obviously before u holster it

Use to use settings profiles. Now I use Llama. Silence based on time/location.
Thanks guys. These options are cool, but a hard sell over the convenience of a physical master sound button. Let me know if you guys can think of anything else. Custom rom holding down the power button or something of the like?

Although I agree 1000%, I can certainly understand of an iphone user who is reluctant to switch again when they have finally got one that "just works"
An engineer friend of mine struggled thru all the pain of a slow/laggy POS android phone with all the asinine work arounds like juice defender/custom kernels etc just to eke out a little more battery life.
Since he is not into customizing the phone AT ALL, you couldn't drag him kicking and screaming back to ANY Android phone at this point..........
Nah, I'm just kidding around. I had a 3GS before my Inspire. It was OK, but that was about it. I don't miss it one bit, but I don't begrudge anyone for wanting simplicity.
No button to switch on the side like the iPhone. But I could also list so many things that the iPhone can't do or lacks compared to the Galaxy S3 so I don't mind that at all.
I have the iPhone 4S too and still enjoy my LTE GS3 over it.
I'm sorry but I think this thread is pointless. He either wants a better all around phone or he wants to stay with his old outdated pos phone. There is no physical button able to mute the phone with the screen off. If that is the dealbreaker he definitely has some issues he needs to work out with himself

I would disagree the OP is asking is there any solution for a specific criteria he has. The reasons behind it maybe questionable but he is still asking does the phone have some functionality he may not know about, which is fine. The whole point of this community is to share and exchange ideas, tips, tricks and educate. There is nothing wrong with someone asking a question about the phone at all many have found features out about their phones that they had no idea it had. What I am struggling with is what your post has at all to offer other than your personal opinion about another phone manufacturer and a potential insult to the OP about his friend. Maybe in the future rather than post something of no value you don't post or post something that has value to others.

Coming from a Treo, a while back, I agree about the usefulness of the ringer switch. It is a nice simple, elegant solution and one of the things I miss about the Treo. The best solution I have found is one of the profile managers like someone mentioned. You can set it to silence the phone whenever a calendar appointment has a word you choose like "meet" or "call" or "lunch".

Samsung has sold 30,000,000 SIII so far!

http://mobilesyrup.com/2012/11/02/samsung-weve-sold-over-30-million-galaxy-s-iii-devices/
Samsung seems to be on a roll with their flagship Galaxy devices. Earlier today they announced that the Note II passed over the 3 million in sales. Now, according to a post on Facebook, plus a picture of proof, the Samsung Galaxy S III has surpassed 30 million in sales.

TBH, I love how I'm seeing more and more Android (looking at things, S3 seems to be much more dominant) in the public... I feel like we're having an actual individualization rising from the ashes... I mean, way back, the dumbphones had so much selections and features aren't all that important people choose to get the phone that expresses themselves...
Then the iPhone came... and all of that was lost, until they started making cases of different designs... Then, if you think about it... people want the same features, but all along people also want to express their individuality... And the rise of androids are bringing back the actual individuality we had back when we had dumbphones... We don't need cases to show off who we are, let our phones do the talking! haha
And still no jelly bean

Now they can use the revenue to develop the next galaxy device that will surpass that 30 million sales mark!
Hope they get rid of the physical/capacitive buttons and adopt the on screen buttons or develop something new.
I am actually quite a fan of how the S3 buttons are laid out. They are very intuitive in my opinion. Though it will undoubtedly be interesting to see where they go with it.

I like the fact we have capacitive buttons on our phones. Is it just me?
Maybe I'm the odd one out that doesn't like the physical/capacitive buttons.
The S3 is my first touchscreen smartphone and I found that without a case I would accidentally hit the back key with my palm.
The fact that on screen buttons are raised from the button of the phone and on the screen, it would prevent that situation from happening.
In addition you are able to customize the buttons to your preference and would have a sleeker appearance than having the big physical home button.
Had the nexus 4 been built differently, I would be all over that.
With so many s3 owners, Samsung really doesn't have an excuse to leave us in the dark with regards to updates.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
I agree on the update part. As for the buttons, i like the physical home button. The only thing i don't like about the phone is the slightly concave screen. Makes screen protector fitting very annoying.
I also agree on the individuality aspect. I think that's a major contributor in Android's surge in popularity over "other os's". And we have a standardized charging plug.

Haha heck yeah! :cyclops:
Maybe this is because I'm coming from the S2 family, but the physical home button is a no no for me.
Customization wise: the S3 does have a fair share of festive cases. Maybe not as many as iPhone, but I guarantee you'll find something. If you're not a case person we have something that not many other phones on the market can get - custom back covers. Besides in durability, we've got the iPhone pretty much beat!
Stock ICS on my S3
30 million is a lie! Samsung isn't cool enough to sell as many phones as Apple!

the only thing i don't like is the home button. why oh why is that an actually physical push button when the menu and back buttons are capacitive ?!?
I have seen quite a few people now with the sgs3. Owning one and being able to talk to another sgs3 owner is a great conversation starter with people.
