I played a few videos over 3G on Youtube yesterday, most of them in HD.. however when I go in Data Usage the Youtube app only shows 300 kb of data usage, wtf?
I manually updated to the latest version (3.5.5), not sure if it was working prior to that since this is the first time I checked.
Try another app perhaps? Then you'll know if it's bug...anyway would go with your instinct...
You can also confirm with your network provider and check your balance

were you on wifi?
You need to enable the wifi tab to check wifi data usage.

No I was on 3G, total data usage shows 55 MB used but when you add up the total from the apps shown it gives around 10-12MB.. I remeber reading about a similar issue a while back.
I filed a bug about the same thing with Pandora a while ago, could be related?

This is my first android phone so I am still finding my way around it, I am looking for a little bit of help.
I installed netcounter and everything seems to be ok it opens and displays the data screens but it never updates the wifi data. (I did a search but found nothing for my problem).
Am I supposed to do something else after the install ? Any help would be much appreciated I also emailed the developer but never got a reply
If it doesn't count WiFi isn't that a good thing? Means what it does say is your mobile Internet which is what you want to keep an eye on...
same problem
i got same problem on my new Desire, wifi is zero all the time, but it does count my mobile data, but probably wrong.. looks like it counts them altogether
lol, guys please
just think logically, what are apps like this made for? to monitor your internet usage so you dont go over your monthly plan, WiFi is free so why would it monitor it and confuse you with overall results?
To be fair though the app has a specific section for WiFi data usage which only ever displays 0 but is clearly meant to show your usage, so it is not working correctly.

no idea why, but it looks like that.. i was using wifi and count of my mobile data was on the increase
but in my brothers legend works fine
well if your with T-Mobile you can always check how much you used on the My T-Mobile page

Of course it should work for wi fi! The app works correctly on other phones. I have contacted the author for a fix for desire. And its very useful to see what activities use up the mb on wi fi so u can estimate what usage it will use when not on wi fi
still active?
I've been able to patch the sourcecode to get it to work on the HTC Desire, which was very easy since it is basically the same device as the Nexus One. I've been using that patched version without a problem.
I've submitted that patch to the author almost 3 weeks ago, but I've received no reply yet. I've also noticed that the application source code hasn't been updated since January, 3rd, so I suspect that this application isn't being actively developed anymore...
Does anybody have a good alternative that monitors both 3G and WiFi?
I'm using Network Monitor since I also couldn't get Netcounter to count wi-fi data. Network monitor doesn't have a problem with that.
Try Smart Monitor Lite, it measures both WiFi and mobile net. Works fine for me...

I rooted my Nexus and got the wifi tether app. Internet wen't down for a while, so I was all happy when I just tethered up and just kept browsing. I also played minecraft multiplayer.
I checked my internet and it was back up, so I untethered and I checked my data usage. The Wifi Tether app says I used 2.16kb of data. I'm like...I was watching a youtube video, I couldn't have used that little. The last time I looked at my data I was at 48mb. Now I'm at 56. But I can't account for all of the increase to be from tethering.
____
Quick question. My 4gig limit refreshes every month from the day i activate my phone right? I got the nexus the day it came out, so the 15th?

No it refreshes by the billing cycle not activation date.
i had to change my to the billing cycle.
it was on the date i activated the phone.

Pheww. Good thing i know to change my cycle. But i still dont have an answer to my first question...
which version are you using?:
I have 3.1 pre108 and it installs fine and activates but there are several failures in the log of the app

I have the exact same question. In data usage it always reports back as 1kb of data used no matter how much I use. Same goes for the data meter in my Verizon mobile.

Any fixes out there?
there are several download/upload meters and trackers in the Market
Im assuming you dont have an older unlimited plan?
Im very curious about this. Pdanet usage seems inline, one netflix movie = 1.5gb. Eek. But a week on wifitether = 17.88kb. Is it possible that the data is being masked ?
Anyone compare the built in data counter to a 3rd party app?
Please forgive me if i am misunderstanding your question as you don't mention whether you are on GSM or CDMA. I am on Verizon and my phone is not rooted so of course i use the Verizon app to determine my data usage. Am i right in assuming that you have deleted your verizon app?

You can move the sliders on the ICS data usage app in settings to change the amount of data reported by date range...
*Edit* The problem was found to be with Titanium backup and how it reports data usage by apps after you restore it. I have contacted the developer for investigation.

So, I have Tasker installed on my Nexus just for simple automation that turns on Wi-Fi tether when my phone's Bluetooth pairs with my car stereo (which is also Android) so I can stream Internet radio etc.
I've been noticing lately that my data has been transmitting a lot when my phone has been sitting idle so I did some investigation and found that Tasker has sent over 2GB of data this month alone. This is more than I've used while tethered! I can't think of any valid reason as to why it would need to send that much data (if any at all) so I am highly suspicious of this app. Anyone else using Tasker? Can you check your data usage to see if you're seeing the same?

Unfortunately it's 99% foreground data which means I can't block it. There shouldn't be any reason for this app to send/receive data from my phone. The only other app that uses more data is YouTube which is valid since I use it all the time. Here's the pic:
OK, this is crazy.
I just went back and checked the previous months of Tasker data usage
September: 4.0GB
August: 3.36GB (date installed was August 7th)
WTF is going on?!
If I was you I would wipe everything including SD card and start from scratch. Def seems a bit fishy...

It is off.

There's some setting to disable/enable external apps from controlling Tasker. Do you have that enabled? If so, try disabling.
What kinda tasks have you configured? Anything that uploads photos or something?

Did you get install Tasker directly from Play Store? If so, might be worth to contact the developer and ask about this. I have this application running in the background for a couple of months now and haven't got this issue.

Did you Titanium back up and restore the system data for "Data Usage". Youtube, my highest data usage app turned into another random app after backing up my Data Usage from stock rom and restoring to Rasbean Jelly.

I only have 1 task configured that pretty much reads like this (logically)
When paired to BTxxx turn on WiFi Tether, End statement=disable tether
That's it.
I haven't changed any of the default settings in Tasker except to remove the lightning bolt from my notification bar. I just unfroze the app. The setting 'Allow External Access' is disabled.

I did download it from the Play Store. I have been in contact with the developer and we haven't narrowed down what the cause could be.

I did do a restore of data usage when I moved over from CNA to Paranoid so you may be on to something here. In your case, do you show any YouTube traffic as well, or has it all been shifted to the random app?
Thanks.
OK, I think I've found the problem. It appears to be a bug in Titanium backup and restoring the usage statistics.
I have also done a restore of my data use after flashing a new ROM so I did some further testing after unfreezing Tasker for a couple of days and everything appears to be fine in that there is no data use being reported.
Thanks for the suggestion Akash3656. I am going to report my findings to the author of Titanium backup.

I had an SGS for 2 years before I got my S3 and about 90% of the time, I was under 100 MB for the month (I use Wi-Fi mostly). Since I have the S3, my data usage has been between 125 MB and 175 MB. Is this normal? What would cause this?
I have checked for Accounts and Sync is turned off, nothing syncs by itself. Apps only update through Wi-Fi and I have not been using the phone any more now than when I had the SGS.
Thanks,
Ian

S3 has a new weather widget that could be sucking data. Also runs a load of bloatware (if stock) in the background. Also depends what apps you have, some might not ask for account sync permission and just sync in the background (google services do this sometimes).
Data is data... one device can't use data 'more' than anothere one... example: watching the same definition YouTube video on an s3 and a nexus 7.... gonna use the exact same amount of data.
I can't really explain why you're experiencing what you're experiencing, but the s3 has a Data Usage section in Settings that you might want to take a look at.

I love this feature of ICS, but it's no help in trying to figure out why I am using more data than with the SGS.
It's not really a problem, but when I got the S3 and upgraded my Telus account, I went with the Promo Voice and Data Lite 50+ plan which gives me up to 100MB of data for $50. It's an extra $10 for between 101MB and 250MB, but I figured since I hardly go over 100MB, this plan would work.

EDIT: The issue was the carrier's fault and not the OS
I found out yesterday that I breached the 5 GB limit of data usage for the month when the carrier completely cut my data connections.
I went to check the reported usage in the system settings and it just shows 687 MB used for the month, the highest usage app is facebook with just a little over 100 MB used.
Now here's some facts:
Running Ditto Note 3 v 3.2 (android 4.3) (based on XXUEMK9) (Baseband: N7100XXUEMJ9)
Never used tethering this month
I always keep 3G off at night and when I'm on WIFI
How do I find out what could have caused all this data usage?
The detailed connections report from the carrier will come in 2 months so I can't know anything yet from that, I'd like to try and figure out something now.
I will be getting a data plan upgrade that will allow me 500 more MB for the month but I'm afraid that if I don't do something fast I might end up wasting all the data again, for now I'm planning of clean flashing the newest release of the rom but I'd like to know if there is some app that will let me monitor data usage in a more detailed way as it seems the built-in android graph doesn't record this hidden data that was used.

Auto sync is already off actually, I always do it manually (actually forget to do it manually), it should show up in the graph if it the culprit were auto sync
Check to see if photo syncing is enabled, google photo's, picassa etc.
I would also do a malware scan with a decent scanner like ESET.

The operator confirmed that the 5 GB have been used, I must wait 2 months to obtain detailed reports though.
Still, something has to have happened on the phone, if it's the operator I have no way of proving it.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm this app will tell you how much data you've used each day and whether it was wifi or mobile plan also give a detailed usage of each app data consumption and this doesn't register the same as what our phone does,it works independently,i've used this app when i was on ICS when detailed data consumption wasn't availble in ICS and then checking my carrier's consumption bill there were only 4-5 mb differences between what the app had registered and what the carrier had. install this for the time being till your month renews and starting the next billing cycle you'll have a better idea about your monthly usage

Thanks for the suggestion!
Turns out that it was all the carrier's fault because it happened to several people at the same time, I was just the first to report it so they didn't know about it.
In the end there was nothing with the ROM, the data the system reported was exactly what I used, no more no less.
