Does the S3 use more data that older Galaxys? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I had an SGS for 2 years before I got my S3 and about 90% of the time, I was under 100 MB for the month (I use Wi-Fi mostly). Since I have the S3, my data usage has been between 125 MB and 175 MB. Is this normal? What would cause this?
I have checked for Accounts and Sync is turned off, nothing syncs by itself. Apps only update through Wi-Fi and I have not been using the phone any more now than when I had the SGS.
Thanks,
Ian

S3 has a new weather widget that could be sucking data. Also runs a load of bloatware (if stock) in the background. Also depends what apps you have, some might not ask for account sync permission and just sync in the background (google services do this sometimes).

Data is data... one device can't use data 'more' than anothere one... example: watching the same definition YouTube video on an s3 and a nexus 7.... gonna use the exact same amount of data.
I can't really explain why you're experiencing what you're experiencing, but the s3 has a Data Usage section in Settings that you might want to take a look at.

I love this feature of ICS, but it's no help in trying to figure out why I am using more data than with the SGS.
It's not really a problem, but when I got the S3 and upgraded my Telus account, I went with the Promo Voice and Data Lite 50+ plan which gives me up to 100MB of data for $50. It's an extra $10 for between 101MB and 250MB, but I figured since I hardly go over 100MB, this plan would work.

maybe u have lte data in ur area that will use more than 3g also

[Q] Galaxy Nexus (rooted) wifi tether data question.

I rooted my Nexus and got the wifi tether app. Internet wen't down for a while, so I was all happy when I just tethered up and just kept browsing. I also played minecraft multiplayer.
I checked my internet and it was back up, so I untethered and I checked my data usage. The Wifi Tether app says I used 2.16kb of data. I'm like...I was watching a youtube video, I couldn't have used that little. The last time I looked at my data I was at 48mb. Now I'm at 56. But I can't account for all of the increase to be from tethering.
____
Quick question. My 4gig limit refreshes every month from the day i activate my phone right? I got the nexus the day it came out, so the 15th?

No it refreshes by the billing cycle not activation date.
i had to change my to the billing cycle.
it was on the date i activated the phone.
first question!
Pheww. Good thing i know to change my cycle. But i still dont have an answer to my first question...
which version are you using?:
I have 3.1 pre108 and it installs fine and activates but there are several failures in the log of the app

I have the exact same question. In data usage it always reports back as 1kb of data used no matter how much I use. Same goes for the data meter in my Verizon mobile.

So its not only me. ugh if i cant accuraty keep track of my data i freak out...
Any fixes out there?
there are several download/upload meters and trackers in the Market
Im assuming you dont have an older unlimited plan?
Im very curious about this. Pdanet usage seems inline, one netflix movie = 1.5gb. Eek. But a week on wifitether = 17.88kb. Is it possible that the data is being masked ?
Anyone compare the built in data counter to a 3rd party app?
Please forgive me if i am misunderstanding your question as you don't mention whether you are on GSM or CDMA. I am on Verizon and my phone is not rooted so of course i use the Verizon app to determine my data usage. Am i right in assuming that you have deleted your verizon app?

You can move the sliders on the ICS data usage app in settings to change the amount of data reported by date range...

GSIII churning through data

We have a user in the company that is churning through data at an incredible rate. We are getting email notifications from ATT about the mobile share group going over its 20gb limit about every hour, Rhett are 4 users in this group, 3 of them have used a combined 350mb of data in 14 days, where this other user is just now broken the 20gb mark for just one line. After several conversations with this individual the user seems clueless as to where the data is going as well clueless to the many ways it could be burning it up.
The user has historically never used hardly any data at all and this appears to be isolated to the past 14 days. It happens during working hours while the user in on the job. The user works out of a satellite office and it could be several days before a tech could get their hands on it.
We have tried having him kill open apps, reboot the phone multiple times daily and the usage still is climbing at an incredible rate, this last time showed almost 1gb in less than an hour.
Any ideas on what this "phantom" usage could be?

What does it say under settings/ data usage? It should list all the apps that are using data and how much...
This page should show you what's using all your data. Have to tried looking at it?

I know I can look under that menu option, at the moment, since the user is nearly 400 miles from one of our techs hands. walking him through navigating to that menu isn't really an option at this point.
Is it possible the user is using an adblocker? Just 2 weeks ago a friend of mine noticed his nexus 4 was eating up data at several gigs per day. He checked the data usage log and it was the adblocker. He had recently installed it by apk since google took them out of the play store. Turns out it routes all ip traffic on your phone out to its servers to strip the ads and then back to the phone. This eats tons of data.
In fact my friend used about 20gigs in a few days if I recall.
Definitely sounds like the culprit to me.

I had a similar issue where my phone ate 3 gigs of my plan over night. I installed a data monitor (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm) and found it was my stock email app. A simple data wipe in settings/Application manager fixed the leak. The above app will tell you exactly which app and how much it uses. Saved me a huge bill.

[q] tethering usage amount

Longtime customer of TMobile and really fed up with the entire data issue. I still can't believe they were able to get away with the "unlimited" throttle back which was worthless when it happen. I admit to a little resentment.. Anyhow I digress. My current plan allows for unlimited data on my phone and 6.5GB Hotspot (tethering). I do not listen to music, or watch videos on my laptop the device being used for mobile hot spot. However last few months I max out. This month I received a text on the 4th I had used 6 and less the an hour later another text used 6.5, so I bought up to the 8 and 3 days later received text saying I had used the 8. Its not possible I am only sending emails and simple web browsing on laptop. ALL DOWNLOADS, software, music, videos, etc are being done on my phone. I went round and round with TMobile and all they can tell me is the total amount used. How can I tell amount being used on laptop?? And if the CSR at Tmobile cannot give me those amounts individually am I suppose to blindly trust them? I DON"T. Something is not right here.. can anyone give me any suggestions or advice?
This is a really hard thing to diagnose.
Are you running a custom rom?
On staock rom the phone is setup to push all data when tethered through a specific APN that is different from what your phone uses for it's data.
That is how they knw how much data is being used.
It is possible that if you are running custom rom that it is sending data through the wrong one.
And I know this is going to sound to obvious, but the hotspot you make with the phone is it password protected and different from what anything else has access to?
If it is unsecured that could just be that someone else is leaching off your connection.
If neither of these is the case you would want to then find a bandwidth monitor for your computer to see if there is any other programs that are running in the background that are doing something without your knowledge.
I know I accidently has windows check and update on its own and between a office service pack and other updates it used 2gb on mine. Never knew it was doing it.

Running stock and hotspot is password protected. Is it possible all data when tethered is going through that same apn? If I decide to download something on my phone while tethering and that is being or charged to my hotspot??? There must be some explanation for this...
If you're not using tether, turn it off as that may be a possible explanation. The other option is to flash a ROM that circumvents the tethering apn through tmo and carry on as usual.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
If you have updates constantly that eats you up the amount of data as well I wasted 2.5 on 1 day just doing that without noticing

[Q] Very high mobile data usage reported by carrier, no evidence in phone

EDIT: The issue was the carrier's fault and not the OS
I found out yesterday that I breached the 5 GB limit of data usage for the month when the carrier completely cut my data connections.
I went to check the reported usage in the system settings and it just shows 687 MB used for the month, the highest usage app is facebook with just a little over 100 MB used.
Now here's some facts:
Running Ditto Note 3 v 3.2 (android 4.3) (based on XXUEMK9) (Baseband: N7100XXUEMJ9)
Never used tethering this month
I always keep 3G off at night and when I'm on WIFI
How do I find out what could have caused all this data usage?
The detailed connections report from the carrier will come in 2 months so I can't know anything yet from that, I'd like to try and figure out something now.
I will be getting a data plan upgrade that will allow me 500 more MB for the month but I'm afraid that if I don't do something fast I might end up wasting all the data again, for now I'm planning of clean flashing the newest release of the rom but I'd like to know if there is some app that will let me monitor data usage in a more detailed way as it seems the built-in android graph doesn't record this hidden data that was used.

Auto sync is already off actually, I always do it manually (actually forget to do it manually), it should show up in the graph if it the culprit were auto sync
Check to see if photo syncing is enabled, google photo's, picassa etc.
I would also do a malware scan with a decent scanner like ESET.

The operator confirmed that the 5 GB have been used, I must wait 2 months to obtain detailed reports though.
Still, something has to have happened on the phone, if it's the operator I have no way of proving it.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm this app will tell you how much data you've used each day and whether it was wifi or mobile plan also give a detailed usage of each app data consumption and this doesn't register the same as what our phone does,it works independently,i've used this app when i was on ICS when detailed data consumption wasn't availble in ICS and then checking my carrier's consumption bill there were only 4-5 mb differences between what the app had registered and what the carrier had. install this for the time being till your month renews and starting the next billing cycle you'll have a better idea about your monthly usage

Thanks for the suggestion!
Turns out that it was all the carrier's fault because it happened to several people at the same time, I was just the first to report it so they didn't know about it.
In the end there was nothing with the ROM, the data the system reported was exactly what I used, no more no less.

mediaserver eating data

Saw today that mediaserver used almost 120 mb of data in the last 24 hours. If it does that every day that's almost 4 gigs in a month. Not sure if it really does happen every day since I just noticed it but that's almost as much as I used for FB, internet, and YouTube combined. I have unlimited data so that's not an issue but I could surely see how that could eat up battery. I've noticed my data usage has been extremely high but since I'm not rooted I can't dig deeper into the issue.
Just wondering if anyone is experiencing the same?
Something seems wrong. I just checked mine..under battery settings, I have used 384bytes.... practically nothing.

Strange. Didn't use any data all day until I watched a few videos, thought it had something to do with Hulu or Break.com, haven't used any other media and again, it's another 100 mb today. WTF?
You might have an app that is staying on in the background. I would try a back-up, master reset, then slowly install the apps...you might find the bad app...??

Only idea is maybe it has to do with wife tethering? Seems like the same amount of data.
Perhaps you have a media player that's trying to download album art or something...?

My syncs are a very short list. 100mb a day for album art? I doubt it, haven't added anything in months. Google+ isn't set for automatic uploads. I do that manually.
Only thing I can imagine is that it is from wifi tethering but from any search I've done I can't see any links to that. I'm not as much of a pro as most people around here but I'm pretty sure my google-fu is working ok. It has to have something to do with wifi tethering cause it only shows up when I'm using it but I can't be for sure. That's why I asked here, hoped someone could confirm my suspicions but no one has yet.
I still don't understand how when I look in settings>data usage it's showing 15 gigs of usage when I haven't used my 3gig limit? Admittedly I have not been able to use wifi this month since I haven't been at home for most of it but still can't see how my data usage has quardrupled. Again, I have unlimited data so that's not a worry for me but it has to be giving my battery life a hit.
