[Q] Not fully rooted, no nandroid backup

To whom it may concern:
I have an HTC Evo, which I rooted in October. I havent had the time to do anything with it since then but the root wasnt properly successful when I first did it. Below are several problems that I have noticed:
1) Superuser doesnt show a list of any apps
2) The software which allows you to keep your phone on roam only doesnt work
3) In the hboot/bootloader screen, I dont have an option to create Nandroid backup.
4) Wi-fi tether doesnt work
Those are some of the things that I saw which makes me believe my phone wasnt properly rooted. I need help so I can be fully rooted, and can have all these features.
I rooted my phone using Amon-RA and Unrevoked 3.

Your best bet is probably to just run an RUU to unroot the phone. And then just use Unrevoked to root again...
Oh yeah, and just to be safe flash the S-ON zip from Unrevoked just incase something happens in between unrooting and rerooting.

first off, you are fully rooted, thats what the s-off means. i would first try downloading an app that requires root, and run it. it should then say granting superuser permissions, for me the superuser screen gets populated every time i open a root app, if that doesnt work you can try downloading the latest version of superuser from the market, its free. also in bootloader you should see the recovery option, you will find the back up option in there, also you can try downloading an app called quickboot (free), with that app you can reboot your phone straight to recovery and you will find the backup option there. if non of that works you should try to reflash amon ra, maybe yours was corrupted, you can find a new amon ra file somewhere in here in xda. for wifi download an app called wireless tether that one works for me. if all else fails try a new rom most of them support what you want, a rom i would recommend for you is azrael x v4 is the most stable and almost the same as the stock one in your phone

Unrevoked S-On(Flash before you use the RUU) This is done through recovery.

He could be "fully rooted" if we just judged by the S-OFF.. BUT, if you read what he said about what it said then and now, he did accept a software update somewhere along the way, and I am guessing he didn't flash radios etc. to do so. If you are rooted and accept a Sprint update your phone will still show S-OFF unless you run the S-ON. I guess we are all a little confused, really need to know if he even has a recovery.

The biggest problem I have always had is that I couldnt create a nandroid backup. I just dont have the option in 'Recovery' on the main bootloader screen. Also, I just installed the Rom Manager and tried to flash ClockworkMod, and it said "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands".

Well to do a nandroid backup you have to have a recovery. If you don't have that option I would bet you are probably not fully rooted. Try the "Root Checker" app in the market from Joey Krim before you follow what I posted earlier just to make sure that you are or are not rooted.

It says "root access is not properly configured or was not granted. Standard su binary location: /system/xbin/su: No such file or directory. SU binary not found in the system declared path"
I guess gotta root the phone again. I downloaded the files you linked (unrevoked forever son) but what do I do with them? Are there step by step instructions for that?

Well, since you don't have a recovery you cant really flash the S-On so just go ahead and run the RUU. There are instructions on that on the link above the downloads.

I thought you said you didn't have it earlier.... Well if you do and you can get into recovery flash the S-On. And then use the link at the top of the page you downloaded the RUU from, there are instructions there on how to use the RUU. I wouldnt use the one you posted because its fairly outdated.

I dont have nandroid backup when I go into recovery. Im going to put that file on the root directory of my folder and see if there is anything i can do with it.

When you select recovery, from the bootloader screen, what happens? Do you successfully boot into a recovery? If so, which one? (amon ra or clockwork). If you don't successfully boot to recovery, and end up at a Screen with an exclamation point and a red triangle, that means that you don't have recovery installed. If you do have recovery (which I don't predict you will), the nandroid backup option would be under the 'backup/restore' section. If you don't have recovery installed, you need to install one. The easiest way for you to do that, is to download this file that I'm attatching. It's Amon Ra V2.3. Put that file on the main directory of your SD card, and then power your phone off. Boot to the bootloader, and wait a few seconds. It should prompt you to update. Select Volume up to say yes. It will then flash a recovery for you. After that, it will ask you to reboot. Select no. Get back to the main screen of your bootloader. Then select recovery. You should now successfully boot into recovery. From this point, I would do a complete wipe of your entire setup, and re flash a new and up to date ROM. That should get you back up and going.

I cant even install the RUU. Because supposedly the directions take me to Recovery and I cant do anything there.
Here is my recovery screen looks like:
First, I get an exclamation point inside a red triangle. Then when I push power+vol.up, it takes me to a screen "Android system recovery <3e>". I have the options to reboot system now, apply sdcard:update.zip, wipe data/factory reset, and wipe cache partition.
sdcard:update.zip gives me an error. Wipe data/factory reset just deletes my text messages and other ****.

Following this...fingers crossed! What do you mean when you say a "complete wipe of your entire setup"? Does that mean re-root?

OMG YAY!!!! I literally have tears in my eyes at seeing this screen. I think the system recovery installed properly. It now says:
Android system recovery
- Reboot system now
-USB-MS toggle
-Backup/Restore
-Flash zip from sdcard
-Wipe
-Partition
-Mounts
-Other
-Power off
What do i do now?

Yes, follow what I said. I just read your previous post, and you don't have a custom recovery. The screen with the exclamation point means that you don't have a custom recovery, just stock recovery. By wipe of the entire system, I mean this. Once you get recovery installed, one of the options on the recovery screen will be 'wipe'. select that. individually wipe data/factory reset, cache, and dalvik cache. (that will wipe all your user data, apps, settings etc, so be prepared for that) Once you wipe all that, select to 'flash zip from sd card', and then select your rom, and flash it (you will need to download the rom of your choice, and place it on your sd card before you do this). Once you flash the new rom, and it completes, choose to reboot the system. You will then boot into the new rom. The first boot can take much longer than normal, so be patient.
EDIT: Also, I suggest flashing Calkulin's Format All.zip, before you flash the rom. You can still wipe, as I previously instructed, but right after that, flash Calkulin's Format all.zip. (this will gaurantee a complete wipe, for a clean install). Once that's flashed, then choose to flash the rom, and proceed as normal.
Also, if you choose to download a rom that instructs you to update your radios before flashing the rom, you can disregard that. Based off the information you posted from your bootloader, you have the most up to date baseband/radio, which means its 99% likely that you already have the most updated PRI, NV, and Wimax as well. (I'm assuming that you took an OTA update at some point, which would've upgraded you from your initial .97 bootloader, to the new 2.10 bootloader. That same update would've also updated all of your radios, so you're good with that)

I'm literally going to follow your setup haha so I want to install Myn's RLS 5 or VaelPak 3.2 or Evervolv, whichever you think is best. And then should I also install a kernel? Would you happen to have quick links to their instructions, otherwise I can just google them.

So awhile back i have rooted my phone with unrevoked then, now i was like i wanna full root, so i put the pc36img and follow instructions, i try to "update" one thing was bypassed another failed tryed to reboot phone and here i am.

No clockworkmod i had it and since i tryed to install this new thing its gone, how do i fix this? PLEASE HELP

I'm really not sure what exactly you were trying to accomplish, as unrevoked provides full root. What root method were you trying to follow?
Anyways, now you need to flash a PC36IMG of a recovery image,.using the bootloader. I'd link you to one, but I'm on the Xda app. Once you get recovery flashed, you can reflash a rom of your choice.

It was the semi root one, im pretty sure cause my evo wouldnt let me run some FULL root access apps like titanium back up and such, how would i flash a recovery image? my phone is stuck at the htc evo 4g boot screen, i can get to the bootloader and it trys (everytime) to to install the PC36IMG and it doesnt work :/

What was the PC36IMG you tried to flash? And where did you try to flash it - the bootloader or recovery? You're saying that it didn't flash successfully, correct?
If all you need is your recovery back and everything is fine, you just need to flash Clockwork again. You can do this through the bootloader or by downloading Rom Manager and choosing "flash ClockworkMod Recovery".
If you want/need to flash through the bootloader, first delete the PC36IMG on your SD card then download the one of CWM that I'll link you to. Put it on the root of your SD card and power down the phone. Boot into the bootloader by holding the volume down button and power button simultaneously. It should check for the PC36IMG and ask you to update. Choose yes, then no when it asks you to reboot. Choose recovery from the menu and you should boot into ClockworkMod. If you don't need to do anything recovery related, just choose to reboot from there.

If your phone won't boot, you'll need to wipe cache, dalvik cache and data then flash a new rom. You can try just wiping cache and dalvik then rebooting to see if that will help, but it probably won't.
EDIT: It could've been that you needed busybox and you really were fully rooted. Did the bootloader say s-off before all of this? If it did, you've been nand unlocked all along.

Ok I have the Clockwordmod working thank you, Phone still wont boot, Im guessing cause it Doesnt have a rom to boot, Idk how to install roms either sadly .
So I think I need a rom to install from zip, but idk how to get a rom thats worth trying to install, last time i tried to install it cam up with :
"Amend Scripting is no longer supported"
"Please switch to edify scripting"

-Steps into the fray-
1. Place the attached file on your sdcard, then boot into the bootloader [vol+down while phone is booting up] let it scan, the apply update., reboot, reboot into recovery and you'll be on amon_ra 2.3 You got the error cuz CWM 3.0+ doesn't support amend scripting [old], only supports edify [new].
As for a rom, I'd recommend CM7.

In recovery, wipe your factory/data, cache, and dalvik. Install rom, select the CM7 you downloaded, go back, wipe cache and dalvik, then flash the gapps, then reboot.

Ok Following the latest post's steps and I'm Installing cm7 now thank you people so much for the help so far, ill let you know if everything goes well.

Settings > CM Settings > Interface > Notification Power widget
scroll down to mobile data [3G], then wimax is 4G, select both [and whatever else you want] and then you can toggle it from the notification.

Please help me return to stock rom

I have tried different methods to return to stock rom. I don't care if I lose root I want to just have my old phone back to normal. I have cyanogen 7 ...luv it but not for me. I used unrevoked to root and every step I tried to return to stock Tom or unroot was unsuccessful. Please I beg please anyone can give me a link or info with UPDATED info not from year ago. Thanks in advance ..

What's going wrong?
If you just want the stock rom, but still be rooted you can either a) restore from your nandroid backup, assuming you made one; or b) flash the stock rooted rom.
If you want to unroot, you need to flash the s-on zip in recovery, then run the RUU from your computer or flash a PC36IMG of the RUU through the bootloader.
I'll elaborate more when you tell me what you've done so far and what you're trying to achieve - stock rooted or unrooted.

Download the latest stock rom. Can be found at shipped-roms.com, or in the MANY stickies and threads here. Place the zip on your sd card, along with the s-on tool.
Reboot to recovery, flash s-on, then flash stock rom zip.

Go to here and flash any one of the listed roms. These are all of the roms that came shipped with the HTC EVO. I suggest you download the any of the ones with PC36IMG in the file name because they can be flashed.

Make sure that in your attempts to go back to stock, you didn't go s-on. Boot into the bootloader and see if it says s-on or s-off at the top. You can do this by holding the volume down button and power button simultaneously until the phone turns on (you must have the phone turned off first). You'll see a white screen with skating Androids.
If you're s-on, you'll need to run an RUU from your computer or flash a PC36IMG of the RUU through the bootloader in order to get back to stock.
If you're s-off (still rooted/nand unlocked) then you can flash the rooted stock rom that I'll link you to. Download the rom and put it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders). Boot into the bootloader using the directions I gave earlier. Then, using the volume buttons to navigate, highlight recovery and then press the power button to select it. Assuming you're using ClockworkMod Recovery, choose wipe cache, factory reset (it may say something else like wipe data, you should know which one though) and then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache. After you've done all three of those, choose install zip from SD card. It's fastest to press the volume up button which will take you to the end of the list - all of your zips will be at the bottom. Highlight the file you just downloaded and press power. Choose yes from the list then let it run its course. When it finishes, select reboot and you will be back on stock.

Holy 4g i did what u said flashed the zip and it did its thing and still came back cyanogen 7. what am i doing wrong anyone pleaseeeee????

i took a whole day trying to figure out how to unroot mine, and i finally got it.
you have to download "unrevoked s-on" put it on your sd card and flash it.
then you have to know which radio your running, so you can know which pc36img to put on your sd card, so when you put it into bootloader it will find it, and run through the checking process, then it will let you apply the update and you will be unrooted.
which radio are you running, and i can help you find which pc36img you need to be using.

Did you go into recovery and wipe cache, data/factory reset beforehand? Check out Guide to Unrooting

[TUT][NOOBS] Step by Step guide to installing CM7

Ok, so I see a lot of guys who are new here and aren't adept with the flashing and rooting process and we're having too many threads based on it and the errors they keep getting. It's nothing wrong to not know certain things but only if the search function was used a bit more.
A few things you should keep in mind :
1> I know no one reads disclaimers anyways but don't blame me if you do something wrong. Follow the steps, they are easy and you're good to go
2> PM me with info, suggestions and tips to improve on this thread if I have missed out certain things. I want this to serve as a basic thread for newbies wanting to install CM7 so we don't clutter the General's with too many threads.

Backup contacts and messages and all other data that is important for you. There are many apps that can do that - Eg. Backup Master, Mobile Backup II, APN Backup and Restore, Backup to Gmail.
Here is a guide for you guys to install and flash the latest version of CM7 on your Wildfire S devices.
1> Bootloader Unlock
a) You can get an S-off using the XTC Clip. What's S-off? It's like a security lock. It could be in the on or off state. An 'S-off' allows you to modify almost everything on your phone. It's pretty costly in many parts so you can try the solution below (it's free)

b) HTCDev method
The first step regarding Bootloader unlock is very important. Unless you do that, don't go forward on this. Here's a beautiful tutorial on how that's to be done.

2> Root & Recovery
Root will allow you to get Superuser permissions on your device. Didn't get it? Well, it's just like administrator privileges. It's basically just a one click solution so that's pretty easy
2a) Root the phone via this crazy one-click software:

2b) Once you're done rooting, you must have the app Superuser now. It's time to install CWM now.
1.Go to Google Play (Market)
2.Download and install ROM Manager
3.Open, click on Flash CWM.
4.Select Wildfire S
5.Let it do it's thing, click YES when it asks for SuperUser permissions
6.You should get a message that it's done successfully.
3> Download CM7 & Gapps
So we're getting at the heart of the tutorial now.
Download the latest nightly or stable build of CM7. There are a few ROM's but I'd personally recommend Alquez's

4>Place files on the SD card
So you now have 2 zip files with you. The CM7 zip file (around 90MB) and the Gapps zip file (around 6MB). Put both of these files on the SD card. Don't create folders, just place it in the root of your SD card.
5> Get into recovery
Turn off your phone. Now, this is the important part.
Press the Power + Volume Down button simultaneously. (if you can't get it working, disable fastboot under settings)
You'll see the white bootloader screen and something will happen for about 5 seconds (don't worry, you haven't bricked your phone ). It's just a normal P76img.zip search. After that is done, select the "Recovery" option using the volume down button and then pressing the power button.
6> Nandroid backup
Nandroid is by far the safest way. will hopefully get people in a good habit of using them!
nandroid is a backup of the exact state of your phone: apps, data, contacts, messages. it can be restored just in case anything goes wrong, and should always be used for flashing critical things like a new rom.
1. Go into cwm recovery. (Actually, you are in CWM recovery if you've done it correctly )
2. Select 'backup/restore' using volume keys and select with POWER button.
3. select backup
The back up will start, and will take around 5-10 minutes to complete
4. Once it is done, it will go back to the main cwm menu.
Backups are stored on SD card in clockworkmod/backup, and can be moved/copied to PC for ultimate safekeeping.
7> Wipe stuff
Congratulations, if you made it this far in one go
Easy stuff now.
Toggle using volume buttons and 'factory reset'.
Then 'wipe cache'.
Then go into advanced and 'wipe dalvik cache' and 'battery stats'.
8> Installing CM7
Now select 'install zip from SD card'.
Then select 'choose zip'.
Then select the CM7 zip file that you had placed on the root of your SD
Select 'YES' obviously
Let it do it's thing for about 4-5 minutes.
Once it is done, follow the same process as above but select the other zip file, that is the gapps zip file. Okay okay, I'll type it again
Now select 'install zip from SD card'.
Then select 'choose zip'.
Then select the Gapps zip file that you had placed on the root of your SD
Select 'YES' .

however i personally think that:
6> Nandroid backup
you've briefly covered backing up stuff earlier, but nandroid is by far the safest way. will hopefully get people in a good habit of using them!
you could put a note saying that nandroid is a backup of the exact state of your phone: apps, data, contacts, messages. it can be restored just in case anything goes wrong, and should always be used for flashing critical things like a new rom.
if you really wanted, this guide is actually not too far from being a generic guide to installing any custom rom. except that some need an sd card partitions (gparted recommended), so you would have an optional step 2a or something. maybe too complicated, just a thought, but good post so far!

EDIT : Added Backup part as well now.

Nice, just one thing, there is no need to reboot before wiping anything.they'll end up back in recovery anyway to flash a new ROM.
you could put a note saying that backups are stored on SD card in clockworkmod/backup, and can be moved/copied to PC for ultimate safekeeping.

hardikrajgor123, thanks for a wonderful tutorial and links you provided. everything worked well for me, but i have one question.
i have a confirmation from htcdev method that my device is unlocked and i did install cyanogenmod (it works perfectly). my only problem is that my phone is still s-on and i cannot delete stack apps.
the way which appeared on one of the links (download root.zip, put it on sd card, run it on cwm) didn't work out for me.
anyone has any suggestions how to solve this?

Did SuperUser install on your phone? If you have root permissions, you can use Titanium backup and remove stock apps. If you're sure the root zip didn't work properly, try doing it again. Follow that tutorial carefully

Try to callibrate battery. You can use any app from the market for it.

That could be a CM7 issue. This tutorial was only to get you guys to install CM7.

Hello, thnaks for nice tutorial. Now i got stuck at installing CWM. I have S-ON and I've just unlocked bootloader via htcdev. Everything went fine, but when i want to flash clockwork mod recovery, it says: "Main version is older!".
I've tried all CWMs I could find here, but it does that with all of them.

Could you root successfully? There has to be superuser app when you restart rom. If you rooted successfully, download ROM Manager from Market.
Open app, Flash CWM. Select Wildfire S. BAM! CWM is installed, that is, the latest version 5.0.28
Delete the P76IMG.zip from SD Card then. Check if you can enter recovery.

No I couldn't. Acording to rooting tutorial, I need CWM first, and then launch rooting script in CWM. Now I noticed, there is some one-click software, but it requires S-OFF. I'm stil S-ON, just unlocked, will that work?

Update: So the super-simple one-click app realy rooted the phone (which really made me laugh ). So thanks for pointing me that direction!

I have s-off and running a nightly rom from a few weeks ago, I partitioned my SD sd card and installed app 2 SD or data to sd and hav loads of storage which I was after.
If I want to keep my apps, data and and current SD card partition option what do I need to do in ordered to update nightly Rom's on a regular basis
Oh I'm rooted , Titanium Backup, rom manager and flash recovery in place.
I'm hoping its just load zip in root of sd card and flash through rom manager, is it that easy ?

Oh wish I'd had this info prior to do it blind for the first time, got it working tho.

So I finally managed to get CM7 working, maybe I can help you with updating this tutorial, as some things don't work anymore with newest firmware...
Steps, which worked for me, at start I had S-ON and 2.13.401.2:
1) Somehow get 2.13.401.3 (which is only one supported by htcdev). Some say, that OTA update worked for them (classic update via menu in phone). It didn't worked for me, so I used RUU update from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074445
2) Then htcdev unlock thing work fine, as you write in your tutorial.
3) Rooting was quite different, because current version of CWM can't be flashed via HBOOT, as it's version is too old.
So new rooting and recovery method, which is actually much more simple and work:
3a) Root the phone via this crazy one-click software: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436426
(I still can't believe, that it was that easy )
3b) Restart phone, then go to market and download ROM Manager
3c) In ROM Manager, click the first item: Flash Clockwork Mod. It will do it's thing, and It's done. You have root and CWM installed, without even going to HBOOT. Cool right?
4, ...) The rest is same, as in tutorial on first page, so continue with step 3> there... (don't forget to backup all the time )

1. Download the newest cm7 you want to flash.
2. Boot into recovery. (you can do this through rom manager but it is easier and better to do all things through recovery)
3. Wipe cache partition and dalvik cache ( dalvik is under the advanced tab)
4. Install zip from sd card/choose zip from sd. File should be in the folder marked download.
5. Choose the cm7 file and install.
6. Reboot
7. Flash Data2Sd Reinstaller from Recovery (you can find it in mindhacker's thread) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432259
8. Reboot
Always backup though, this process is tricky. Works for some, not for others

I recently followed these instructions, then somehow, all my contacts on my sim were wiped. Now, I can't even add contacts and put them on sim. Any help? I can call and text just fine though.

Before i start, just like to say that I spent almost two days to read almost all posts related to my phone, but still feel I need your help.
Ok then:
I own an HTC Desire and recently asked an informatic friend to root my phone, mainly for two reasons:
- In order to install more applications, since it was always with the notification of "low memory space" and still had lots of applications to install and,
- To be able to customize, since I see many colleagues with images and icons very beautiful and I'd like to have that
After the root done, my friend installed the ROM CyanogenMod 7.0.1
I was very happy the phone came to my hands, but even before i start to install the applications i noticed that only had about 70MB free space, and then after installing some, quickly came to 30Mb, even using the App2SD. Frankly it seems to me that this program is working exactly the same way it was before the root. One part goes to the SD but another part is the internal memory. I thought with the root, the entire application would go to the SD.
I also noticed that either the cache or system applications were also in the internal memory and not in SD. So i suspect that something is lacking because something is not right.
Another question I have, and probably can be related, is that applications that came in were the Rom Manager and Superuser. However, if you open the Superuser does not appear nothing, not on the page of the application or the registration page. Do not know if it's normal.
As for the rom manager, any action that I want to do such as Install Rom from SD card, or Download Rom or Check for Rom Updates, or Partition SD Card always shows me the message "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing. Install the Recovery Manager through Rom first " followed by the option Install or Cancel. Has im not an expert, i decided not to install and listen to your help first. What is wrong? what should I do?
I hope you understand me (sorry for my English but im from Portugal) and i wait you can help me.

1. Search for SD partition guide, a2sd/a2sd+/data2ext guide, Hboot flashing guide, recovery flashing guide, rom flashing guide (in no particular order, get them all), learn and figure out what these are. So before you take a step, you know the risk.
2. Maybe your Desire got RMD Recovery on the recovery partition after rooted. So with your finishing "1." , you should know how to get a ClockworkMod Recovery.
Bad english, hope you know what I try to tell. Learn those and you'll know how to get more ram.

The rooting process installs Superuser on your phone system partition. Superuser is the app that grants root permissions to other apps. Opening it will just show you which apps have been granted root priveledges which I am guessing are none so far.
Do not use ROM manager with the desire it will cause all kinds of problems. You should already have a custom recovery installed when it was rooted.
To get more space for apps you need to install a ROM that supports A2SD+ (not the same as Froyo A2SD) and partition your sd card. ROMs available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328 There is a guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084 Follow steps 5 to 7 (you have done 1 to 4 already). Alternatively you could change the phone internal partitions in conjunction with an appropriate ROM but that is more complicated.

How can i know that?!

Shut down phone, then hold vol down and press power - this will take you to bootloader screen. Navigate using vol up/down to Recovery and press power to select - this should take you into custom recovery.
Edit: do you know how your mate rooted your phone? Post the details shown on bootloader screen, and what your original hboot version and software version is if you know.

Oh dear, I'll help you move on from this forum.
You have now S-OFF'd your device, meaning you can now manipulate any data that is saved onto your nand (layman's terms: built in) memory.
If you want to do further change, such as changing the operating system on your device, you need to flash a custom recovery. There is a tutorial on my guide on how to do so. Do not ask me which one to flash, remember a recovery is a recovery is a recovery is a recovery - they ALL do the same thing, some may have different features than others.
Once you have flashed recovery backup your ROM.
There are a few different variations of Android, here are A FEW you can choose from, I just picked the first one that picked the criteria.
Sense 2.0/2.1
Sense 3.0/3.5
Stock AOSP Gingerbread
Customised AOSP Gingerbread
MIUI AOSP Gingerbread
AOSP ICS (UNSTABLE)
Once you've decided what ROM you would like to choose, read the forum thread, and find out what HBOOT you need from www.alpharev.io (make sure to check the md5 before flashing, there's a tool that does this for you in resources on my guide). And flash the hboot (tutorial on my guide).
A lot of ROMs also support A2SD. For this you need to have a EXT3 or 4 partition on your sd-card. Use Gparted to make a 1024mb EXT3 or 4 partition on your sd-card. Make sure to back it up beforehand as it will be wiped.
Put the ROM on your sd-card, boot into recovery.
In recovery do a full wipe of boot, system, data, cache and dalvik cache.
Flash the ROM you wanted to use.
reboot.
That's as much help as you'll get from anyone here.

Well, best way to gain some knowledge is a) to read and b) to try out different things. So please, stop complaining and just do it! Most of us learned how to do things by doing them. And that's also the reason why most newbies get some troll posts when asking things.
This post is not meant to insult you, but just to give some advice. There are very few states where your phone will be totally unusable, so just give it a try.

Looks like you haven't got a custom recovery flashed. If you are going to use ClockWorkRecovery then next time when it asks you to flash CMW recovery say Yes and follow the instructions. Personally, I prefer 4EXT recovery (you can search for it in Google play store). But you need a custom recovery on your rooted phone before you can start tinkering with it.

you're rocketing your way to 10 posts very quickly...spreading a little bad advice along the way
- you need to be s-off before you can start tinkering with recovery
- also, he has already been advised correctly not to use ROM manager at all...

1.Just install 4ext app from Google Play
2.Flash with it 4ext recovery, boot into recovery and do a backup of your current rom
4.download the customrom zip of your choice.
3.download the required hboot and flash it.
5.boot from the 4ext app into recovery do a full wipe
6. go to install zip from sd ( if needes toggle veryfication off before)
7.Reboot
8. finish
7.Have fun

If i recall correctly, the timeline i followed was
stock rom
got my self root and custom recovery (clockwork) ( unrevoked.com)
custom rom, on stock hboot
s-off, custom hboot, custom rom with more space for data (alpharev.nl)
so a custom recovery without s-off is possible
