What's going wrong?
If you just want the stock rom, but still be rooted you can either a) restore from your nandroid backup, assuming you made one; or b) flash the stock rooted rom.
If you want to unroot, you need to flash the s-on zip in recovery, then run the RUU from your computer or flash a PC36IMG of the RUU through the bootloader.
I'll elaborate more when you tell me what you've done so far and what you're trying to achieve - stock rooted or unrooted.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
Download the latest stock rom. Can be found at shipped-roms.com, or in the MANY stickies and threads here. Place the zip on your sd card, along with the s-on tool.
Reboot to recovery, flash s-on, then flash stock rom zip.

Go to here and flash any one of the listed roms. These are all of the roms that came shipped with the HTC EVO. I suggest you download the any of the ones with PC36IMG in the file name because they can be flashed.

Make sure that in your attempts to go back to stock, you didn't go s-on. Boot into the bootloader and see if it says s-on or s-off at the top. You can do this by holding the volume down button and power button simultaneously until the phone turns on (you must have the phone turned off first). You'll see a white screen with skating Androids.
If you're s-on, you'll need to run an RUU from your computer or flash a PC36IMG of the RUU through the bootloader in order to get back to stock.
If you're s-off (still rooted/nand unlocked) then you can flash the rooted stock rom that I'll link you to. Download the rom and put it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders). Boot into the bootloader using the directions I gave earlier. Then, using the volume buttons to navigate, highlight recovery and then press the power button to select it. Assuming you're using ClockworkMod Recovery, choose wipe cache, factory reset (it may say something else like wipe data, you should know which one though) and then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache. After you've done all three of those, choose install zip from SD card. It's fastest to press the volume up button which will take you to the end of the list - all of your zips will be at the bottom. Highlight the file you just downloaded and press power. Choose yes from the list then let it run its course. When it finishes, select reboot and you will be back on stock.

Holy 4g i did what u said flashed the zip and it did its thing and still came back cyanogen 7. what am i doing wrong anyone pleaseeeee????
i took a whole day trying to figure out how to unroot mine, and i finally got it.
you have to download "unrevoked s-on" put it on your sd card and flash it.
then you have to know which radio your running, so you can know which pc36img to put on your sd card, so when you put it into bootloader it will find it, and run through the checking process, then it will let you apply the update and you will be unrooted.
which radio are you running, and i can help you find which pc36img you need to be using.

I'm not in a rush to hack my Droid Incredible right now, but want to keep the possibility open for after the official 2.2 comes out, so it seems the recommendation is to install Unrevoked Forever since we don't know if the Dinc will still be rootable after the update (I actually believe it will be eventually, but no guarantees). I am NOT planning to install a custom ROM right now, my entire goal is to have S-OFF and then go back to stock enough to catch the official OTA when it comes.
I've been reading the instructions (and the warnings) and just wanted to make sure I've got the idea before I do anything. Can anyone point out any flaws in the steps below:
1. I downloaded the HTC_Incredible_Downgrade.zip from xda forums which I believe has the stock recovery PB31IMG.zip (146,445,757 bytes).
2. Install unrevoked3 to root the phone.
3. Download unrevoked-forever.zip. Install it with the custom recovery that unrevoked3 installed.
4. reboot and see the S-OFF setting
5. Then use the custom recovery to install the stock PB31IMG.zip from step 1.
So before I do this I want to make sure:
* Will I then be back to stock in every way except that S-OFF is set?
* Will any of this procedure wipe my phone clean so I lose installed apps and data?
* Am I then ready to catch the stock OTA install of Froyo when it comes out?
I suspect a bunch of people are thinking of doing this right now.
Thanks in advance
Steve
Welp
Remember that step 2 is far more involved; you need the special HBOOT drivers, and no HTC Sync.
I believe the 3 stars are:
* Yes
* No (since Step 5 is just flashing the original recovery)
* Yes
Which step do you expect to wipe my phone? I wouldn't have expected the rooting part to wipe it since I'm not talking about installing a custom ROM. I was more worried about the recovery to stock to wipe it.
Whoops
Whoops ... misread your step 5. No, you should be fine.
you dont really need to flash the entire stock rom just the recovery it can be found at http://adrynalyne.us/ here is a direct link http://adrynalyne.us/files/recovery/stock/PB31IMG.zip
Edit: in your step 5 you will need to use hboot to install a stock recovery
ps the stock recovery only is like 3.3mb the one you have is 140mb and will wipe your phone.
Uhm, you can't flash one part of the PB31IMG.zip, so if it's 146MB, it's most likely a system image with wiping data and cache, so yes, it will wipe your phone. You can find a stock recovery only PB31IMG.zip somewhere on the forums here. Search around.
I'm currently rooted with unrevoked3 and unrevoked forever. I have yet to mess with my radio or flash any roms. So to be eligible to get the over the air update I need to just flash that stock recovery zip?

oops. lol. delete.
OK, unrevoked3 and forever both installed now (everything went VERY smoothly), haven't done the recovery to stock yet.
So I notice that I've got the Superuser Permissions app installed now. Do I need to unroot before I can do an OTA update to Froyo, or can I keep root and still do the OTA? If for some reason I wanted to give up root at some point what would be the minimum I need to do?
Do I lose root when I reinstall the stock recovery to allow the OTA?
Steve
Are there any docs or usage info about the Superuser Permissions app that unrevoked3 installs? I'm not sure what to do with it.
Steve
What I don't get is the part about regaining superuser access with an update.zip after receiving the OTA. Where can I find said file? I've searched and googled and can't find it.

At the stock recovery you press vol up and power and you get a menu you where its possible to reboot, install undate.zip...ect...
From what I hear you only need the stock recovery and the stock build to get and install the official ota.
If your rooted that should be fine the ota will likely remove root but who cares with s-off!

I then applied an (update.zip) from the sd card which was the pb31mg.zip. I then reboooted. Is there anything I can check to make sure Im stock enough to recieve the ota?

OK, so I'm a bit of a n00b here, and I need just a quick hand.
I'd flashed Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo a few days ago and was attempting to use metamorph to tweak the battery icon. Ran a Nand backup beforehand. Something went wrong with the metamorph and I was stuck in a bootloop afterwards.
So I hit power and held down on the volume rocker, hoping to get into my Nand.
Instead, it wouldn't let me select anything, went through its own update/recovery process, and now that it's done, I'm back to stock (complete with sprint bloatware) and totally unrooted. I DLed Rom Manager off the market and tried to get into Amon_Ra recovery, but it keeps telling me I don't have permission (thus I deduce I've lost root access.)
Is there anyway I can flash my Nand at this point, or do I need to go back through the rooting process?
Thanks for your help.

To get a recovery on your phone, you need to have root.
To get root need superuser permissions and/or nand unlock
To get nand unlock and superuser permissions you need to go through the rooting process.
If you've used unrevoked 3.21 and have S-OFF. You can flash recoveries and superuser permissions without having to go through any rooting process.
So I guess then what I need to understand is how would I go about flashing the superuser?
edit: at this point I've already gone through the whole rooting process, including unrevokedforever.zip and the additional ENG bootloader. I get into ROM manager, and go to recovery, but the clockworkmod recovery doesn't see my most recent backup. Reflashing to RA recovery, it finds it, but tells me I have to run the recovery via ADB. ???
Pretty sure what happened is that you left a stock pc36img.zip on your sd card, leftover from your rooting process. When you booted into hboot, it loaded it automatically and you must have hit update. Not sure what caused your bootloop though.
Check your sd card, and if theres a pc36img.zip on it, delete it. Look for the superuser app in your app drawer, and also check your hboot to see if you're s-off. If you are in fact back to unrooted stock, you can always run unrevoked to quickly root and then you can restore your nandroid, just make sure you have the same recovery that you used to make the nandroid.

When you go into the loader (Vol Down + Power) does it say S-Off in the first line?
If it does then you still have root and you can flash the custom recovery's .zip and you will be able to load back into recovery.

Definitely. So now I need to get my microSD card reader and remove it. Can do.
Any idea why both Clockworkmod and Amon_RA are unable to load my backup? Versions for RA should be the same, and I think the same for Clockwork as well.
OK, I deleted PC36IMG.zip, now it just stays stuck in bootloader.
looks like I'm hosed, but here's what I'm learning on Freeza's thread, where I DLed the PC36IMG.zip in the first place:
freeza said:
UPDATE: It appears as though everyone is getting stuck in bootloader after this procedure. You can get out of this by reflashing your current ROM (without wiping) and/or restore a nandroid backup. Some have reported errors when trying to restore a nandroid backup. YMMV
Karadorde has put together a package that works. Read his instructions below:
First and foremost it seems that if you get stuck in the Bootloader (no matter what method you are using) then your Nandroid backups are broken. I don't know that anyone has been able to successfully restore from one of those yet.
The file in the OP allows you to apply just the engineering HBOOT.img (hboot_0.76.2000.img) This works flawlessly for some but not so well for others.
The file in Post 71 and Post 91 allows you to apply a full PC36IMG.zip that contains the engineering HBOOT.img (hboot_0.76.2000.img) This is a fix for some who have gotten stuck in the Bootloader after using the file from the OP. At the same time this has also caused the some of the same issues people were having with getting stuck in the Bootloader from the OP. This file will not downgrade any part of your phone, however, it will wipe the phone. Also it is reported that it broke root on one phone. I believe this only happened to one person, need confirmation on if it happened to multiple.
If you get stuck in the Bootloader you can re-flash your Kernel to fix the issue. Not sure if this works with the stock Kernel or if you have to have a custom Kernel. Looking for feedback on this.
If you get stuck in the Bootloader reflash your current rom. Need feedback on this as well.

Running a RUU will put you at full stock, including radios and hboot.
If you are still stuck, try running the most current RUU and then rerooting.

Hey all. I tried to find the stock rom for evolution but don't know the best search parameters to find it. Long story short, I want to flash the stock rom so I can take my phone in because I think the husband port is loose. Its not charging correctly. So it anyone could help it would be a life saver. Thank you

In order to unroot, you need to download the s-on zip from the unrevoked site and flash it through recovery. Then download this file: http://goo-inside.me/supersonic/sto...15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.zip and rename it to PC36IMG, don't add a zip, it's already there (even if you can't see it). Put the file on the root of your SD card, hold volume down and power at the same time until the bootloader loads. It will scan for the file and ask you to update. Choose yes, then wait for it to flash. Reboot when it asks and you'll be stock unrooted. Don't worry about rerooting this device, because they'll have to replace it. When you get your new phone (or refurb) don't try to restore any nandroid backups. You can restore your user apps and data, but don't restore any system stuff through Titanium Backup.
Good luck!
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
Thanks for that. That's going to be step 2 though. Id rather still be rooted with the appearance of a stock rom because I don't know if thwyll need to take my phone. That way if im just confused, I don't have to reroot this phone. If they do need to take it, ill unroot it and root the new phone
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If your usb port is broken, they will replace it, it cannot be fixed. You can flash the stock rooted rom and take it in, but if they boot into the bootloader to check if you're rooted, they can refuse to fix it.
Rerooting only takes a few minutes with unrevoked, so I suggest unrooting it. If you still just want to flash the stock rom, you can find it in the development forum.

Can I do this all on just my phone? My pc is dead. Or do I have to transfer the img after turning s on?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Sorry, I was at work. Yes, you can do all of it from your phone. You can go ahead and put the PC36IMG on your SD card while you put the s-on zip on there. If you get to recovery manually (bootloader then choose recovery) just be sure to decline when it asks you to update, or else you'll have to reflash recovery, flash s-on, then reflash the RUU.
If you want to flash the stock rooted rom first, just in case the PC36IMG doesn't work for whatever reason, do so before the s-on zip. That way if you have a hard time getting the PC36IMG to work, you won't have to take the phone in with it stuck on something obviously not stock.
I'm not saying that you will have problems with the PC36IMG, but some people do.
If you're trying to download all of this on 3G, it may take a painfully long time.

im thinking about rooting my phone.
i heard that the unrevoked method is the easiest to use..
i read a few guides on that.. seems pretty straight forward cant mess that up.
after i root i would like to flash a custom rom..
what is a good app or program to use to back up my phone? what are some good roms? what is the best way to flash a ROM.
i read the guides here and they confuse me as i read many ways to do this. just want the easiest way to do it and get it done right.
Try ClockworkMod ROM Manager
ROM Manager is really easy to use and it can also backup your ROM ...it can also help you browse/download other ROMs.

I dunno about unrevoked working on that hboot but I know that revolutionary does. However that only gets you S-OFF, then you have to flash recovery (or you can have it flashed in the process), with which you may flash another ROM.
always remember to do a nandroid backup though!
Also, you having a CDMA desire makes things a bit tougher... for example you can't use the different Hboots from alpharev as they will brick your phone.. and don't quote me on this buy all ROMs may not work on it.
so i guess i wont root my phone... really dont wanna take a chance of bricking my phone. unless theres a very easy way to do it with a slim to none chance of error
so what can i do?
no it's absolutely safe for you to S-OFF.. so don't have to worry about that, just that there are less things available for the BravoC than the Bravo e.g. not all ROMs support BravoC (I know Cyanogenmod does)
Once you've S-OFF'd and flashed recovery (you are prompted whether you would like to flash recovery in the S-OFF process, select yes) you can just flash a custom ROM. Just always remember to do a nandroid backup before you flash anything!!!, and it's also good to do a full wipe before flashing, as you don't get crap from previous ROM (ofc. back it up before you wipe it lol)

thats his hboot version because he has a BravoC, which has a different hboot version.. that's why I'm unsure whether unrevoked would work (I mean yes, it works on BravoC but I don't know what version/ hboot etc. so It'd be safer to S-OFF, flash recovery, then flash ROM, instead of rooting with unrevoked and flashing recovery through that... get what I mean?)
is there a step by step guide for that?
download revolutionary, turn on USB debugging on your phone, plug it in via USB and run revolutionary (following the process on their sit, all it is, is entering the beta key which is given to you, after that everything is done for you)
During the process, you are prompted whether you wish to install clockworkmod recovery, choose yes (unless you would like to install a better recovery choose no, and I'll continue the guide for that )
If you chose yes to flash recovery while using revolutionary, then skip this step, and any of the lime coloured writing, if you chose no, then follow on and ignore any orange coloured writing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download this recovery, and put it in c:\
Download the attached fastboot.zip, and unpack it into c:\
Open cmd and type:
Code:
cd\
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery c:\recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img
fastboot oem gencheckpt
Note: the last command will boot you into recovery
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whether you chose to flash clockworkmod recovery in the S-OFF'ing process, or you flashed the Ra Desire recovery in the process I told you about, either way, you should now have a functioning recovery.
>From here, you need to make a nandroid backup (from backup & restore) of your stock, unrooted ROM.
>Once you've got the backup if you're in clockworkmod go to mounts and storage, format boot, format system, format userdata, format cache, go to advanced settings and format dalvic cache.
>If you're in Ra Desire, go to wipe, and select wipe all user data.
>Once you've backed up, and wiped your phone, proceed to install a ROM of your choice from the SD-card. If you are using clockworkmod, choose the install zip from sdcard, flash zip from sd-card, then choose a ROM you downloaded.
>If you're in Ra Desire, go to flash zip from sd-card and install the ROM
Hope that helped you, and hope it's not too confusing for you with all the colour coding and stuff lol

If you would like to restore, then you do a full wipe, go to backup and restore, select restore and choose which backup you would like to restore
no, nothing is deleted until you flash
to flash a ROM, like I said in the guide:
>Once you've backed up, and wiped your phone, proceed to install a ROM of your choice from the SD-card. If you are using clockworkmod, choose the install zip from sdcard, flash zip from sd-card, then choose a ROM you downloaded.
>If you're in Ra Desire, go to flash zip from sd-card and install the ROM

when you select that option, it will take you into a menu with everything in your sd-card, you just have to find where you put the ROM you want, and select it with the trackpad, it will flash itself, then reboot.
This will work on your phone. I'm 110% Sure http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/htc-desire-cdma

nonnoo you don't restore after flashing.. When you flash a different ROM, you flash a completely different version of Android, that developers have changed/modded. You perform a backup in order to be able to go BACK to your old ROM, if you don't like your new one, or if something goes wrong with it. You only restore when you want to go back to your previous ROM.

is there a way to copy all my messages and apps and stuff like that?
i know some roms dont come with the google apps how do i get those?
what is the best rom out of those three? there any pics of how they look?
very right I almost forgot about the google apps.
cyanogenmod doesn't come with them, download this and flash it in the same way you would the ROM (WITHOUT WIPING ANYTHING!!) http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version/Google_Apps
You can usually find screenshots of most ROMs.. so it's just about doing some research.
and you can use an app called sms backup+ from the market.
I'd suggest backing up your contacts too! or moving them to the sim card
ok thank you sooo much for your help ill pm you if i have any questions
If this has been asked before then please forgive me...
I can not go back to any backup I had of CM7 or Gingerbread Sense ROM since upgrading to some Alpha ICS roms. I've tried wiping everything & started from scratch on these roms but I always get stuck at "failed to write boot partition from /tmp/boot.img" It doesn't matter what Gingerbread ROM I choose with the exception of MIUI rom (don't know why). I thought maybe I could use that as a stepping stone to go back from there but nogo. I've used RA's recovery & CWM with no success. Any ideas?

I can say with certainty that I don't have this problem. I've flashed every ROM from here to Timbuktu, AOKP, Deck's, Evervolv, and have had no problem restoring a nandroid of, or flashing MikG, Mik3D, MikRunny, The Express, or any other ROM I may have forgotten.
That boot partition error doesn't sound good, though. What HBOOT version do you use?

No reason to upgrade - just wondering.
I'd recommend you flash a stock ROM in the bootloader - that should normalize everything, and then try those other ROMs again.

I assume your talking about in the recovery (aka amon ra/ clockworkmod), if so then I've tried that as well. Same issue.... This is not sounding good for me.

In the first "My Links" link in my sig, there are 3 of them.
They're PC36IMG files - you rename the file to exactly that - PC36IMG.zip - and put the file on the root of your sd card. Then you reboot your device into bootloader (HBOOT) mode. From a powered off state, hold the Volume down button and then press and hold the power button until you see the HBOOT screen. The file should be recognized and loaded, and after a minute or so it will ask you to update. Press Volume Up to accept, and then wait for a while.
NOTE: This will upgrade your HBOOT, but that's no big deal. The phone will reboot into the bootloader once near the beginning of the process by itself - that is also okay. Don't touch anything while it's updating.
At the end of the process, you'll need to find a PC36IMG for your preferred recovery (RA-supersonic-v2.3 recommended), which you will flash the same way as the ROM (in fact, you can replace the ROM file with the recovery file - unless you want to hold on to it, then you can just move or rename it).

Failed on #4 Boot.... it stated "failed - PU" "Partition failed" Fun times.... Now the phone is a brick (stuck at the white screen).... Where there is a will then there is a way so I'll find a way.... any help would be appreciated though....
Sooo... I was able to flash back my alternate recovery using a PC36IMG version of it. Thank god for the rooted community.... Restoring back my last backup. Funny though, that I still could not restore a rooted stock backup I had or a new upgraded .zip that I wanted to use. Common denominator in all this (even when trying to use the 4.24.651.1 version of the stock software PC36IMG), it can not write the boot.img Any one else had this problem? Next I will try to RUU which will technically make me lose root but I should be able to get it back, assuming I'm successful, since I still have S-OFF.
PS: My HBOOT now, btw, is 2.16.0001 so I know that the original attempt to get back to gingerbread was succesful
