Just ran across this article on Cingular/ATT approving the 8525 for a WM6 upgrade later this year. I wonder when they will make the formal announcement?

Nice second post....posting a month old engadget article, that has already been
Punch "engadget" into the search for this forum, and you'll find 5 threads that discuss this.
Things are going from bad to worse on these forums, the amount of new threads started without any good reason is getting out of hand.
Why people do not spend an hour or so searching and reading before posting and leaving themselves open for ridicule is beyond me.
SEARCH AND READ OR FACE A SHREDDING!

I think posts like this bright blue one lower the quality of the forum more so than a repeat thread with good intentions. My 2 cents.

For what it is worth, not much, my opinion is I would rather see the same questions asked and answered civilly 20 times than see the flaming that is going on all too much right now.
New users are discovering this site all the time. That is actually a good thing. Many of them don't know how to use the site. Explain it to them, help them become contributing members. Some of them will not ... there will always be people willing to leach off a system but some of them might be our next big contributor.
If you don't want to answer a post that has been asked before, simply ignore it. Others will step in to help ... or not. It is the lack of civility that is causing all of the ruckus around here not the repeated questions.

Get a grip mate, if you are new to something you do not jump in with both feet! I do help people when the problem is something that is obscure and is not easy to find, but for christ's sake having the same thread posted time after time gets really annoying when it takes 5 minutes to find the answer. I have personally made cab files available at least 3 times for certain questions, without all the other postings by other people.
Having new threads made for the same question also knocks existing threads down one notch making it harder to find answers when you are looking for something. How you can you justify sticking up for these idiots is beyond me, it makes you look as dumb as them.
"Ohh whaaaa, whaaa, sniff sniff, newbies are ruining our forums with stupid questions and not searching..." Shut up already. You were a newbie too once... you didn't just magically appear on this forum with 100's of posts.

Yes of course I was a nOOb once,
BUT....... I did not come here asking a lot of dumb ass questions when I started, and pissing people off with the sort of questions a 10 year old kid with some pc ability could find the answers to with one eye shut.

Well, if asking for civility makes you dumb then count me guilty as charged.
Your argument does not hold much water. You are saying it only takes 5 minutes to find your answer in search. In fact, that is probably about right by my experience.
On the other hand you are angry with them because their post makes you look down an extra line or maybe even click a button to go to the next page to get to the thread you are looking for. That makes you sound like a bit of a hypocrite. You want them to spend 5 minutes searching so you don't have to be put out by clicking on a button to go to the next page? Think about that for a moment.
I am just saying don't flame them because that will not stop new users from asking silly questions. If your intent is to make some other user not ask a stupid question, you are probably wasting your effort. You are not going to affect the next new user that does not read because they will not read your post to know they will get flamed if they ask a stupid question.
If your intent is to get that person to search, simply tell them it is available in search and make them look. They will learn and you will still accomplish your task of teaching them to read without runing off new users who's first experience here otherwise will be to get a flame back with f*** this you so and so read the GD wikki.
We all want this site to grow, that will happen by welcoming new users not scaring them off.

My last comment:-
Perhaps we should have a seperate section where all nOObs can post called the nOOb section, then you can help them with their dumb and repetative questions, while the rest of us can get on with the more serious issues.

I understand your frustration my friend. I am really a smarta** and flamer at heart I have just seen too much of it here. We spend as much time flaming the nOObs as we do contributing and the site is losing some value as a result. I just don't want to see a good thing die.
Have a good day ... see you around the site.
Forget flaming
hay all of you flaming nerds, who cares if they did not search, this thread still seemed to have attracted users even if it is dumb didn't it!!!!!!
there are more flaming posts on this site than regular posts and dumb questions combined, for every dumb question there are 30 flames.
Oh you poor people your poor little eyes have to read one extra line of words, "oh dear there is an extra word i have to read i'm a-gettin the vapors!!"
You spend way way way more time writing flames than you actaully do skipping the dumb question and moving on. or try something different and instead of being an a-hole actually help the newb find their way around.
by flaming you are showing that you are immeasurably more stupid than the one asking the dimb questions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
any way, i wouldn't mind having a cingular rom since:
1. I have cingular on my unlcoked tytn
2. I can get push to talk unlimited for 10 bucks
3. I can care less about having the side button mapped to voice command, i can do that from my headet (plus if you are using voice command to dial a number right there from your handset instead of speed dial or contacts, you are just lazy)
It's amazing how seriously some take these internet forums.
So the guy is new and posted some old information, so what? It's probably happened a thousand times, correct?
Just move on and save the high blood pressure for something that really matters...
This is an absolutely freaking waste of space thread...
For the senior members please dont flame, it only makes it worse, just ignore them and they will go away since their questions dont get answered, might actually force them to read and search...
@the N00bs... READ AND SEARCH before making usless threads.. and if you dont like the rules then go elsewhere... Now when someone tries to search for a cingular WM6 8525 rom they are going to pull up several threads of the same topic.. THIS IS A WASTE OF TIME all because you were to lazy to search...
And in the case of this thread... Do you really think a month old engadget story that involves the hermes (8525) and WM6 would have somehow missed this forum... hmmmm not likely!
I think the best way for all the noobs like me is to search first before posting our query and if we cant find then I think we can ask now, so that we can avoid
some of our seniors here. and we can learn from that also searching and finding some other techniques, apps that we need in our phone.
To top it all this site helps a lot of dash user, because we have a great people around.
Good day!!!
that was the first smart thing i have read here in weeks! jk
but yes, that is exactly what you should do. its only fair. to get the answers that you guys ask, someone had to search for it. i dont like when people want things handed to them. at least TRY first. if you HONESTLY cant find anything, then ask. i dont think anyone here has ever been treated inappropriately. you ask a stupid question, or one that has been asked 1000000 times, and you are asking for a creative answer that might hurt your feelings a bit. forums are not a take/take situation. you have to give what you take. when people have 10 total posts, all of which are asking to walk them through something or to give them something, my first thought is "how about you f**k off?". if you have learned something in your 10 posts, give it back and reply to a few new comers questions. we had to. what makes you better than the rest of us? you get everything spoon fed while we have to do the legwork. F THAT
I just wanted to post because i see on most threads theres usually someone has to be a cheeky arrogant **** to someone that is simply asking for help and doesn't have much knowledge.
My understanding was you came here for help and support and to try and help others is it not? But yet, when people ask for help they often get slaughtered for various reasons such as: wrong section, repeated thread, not searching properly, using the wrong punctuation etc (the last one was exagerated a bit but it wouldnt surprise me)
Basically before i came here years ago I would not have even known what Root is/does, why you would flash different ROMs etc and i have learned everything thanks to XDA and the various genious' that make it all possible.
I just dont think its right the way some people THINK they can talk/treat others and it is certainly uncalled for.
For example when i first came here I had the Xperia X10 and was very interested in the work and came across a problem when flashing someones ROM but I didnt have enough posts to reply so had to start a thread in General asking for help and the response i got you think i had just launched a nuke and killed thousands.
I know i will probably get slaughtered for this but basically i think this is a problem that should be addressed and no one else will say anything about it so i will!
And one final thing i cant understand. What could possibly make you feel good about making a **** out of others??? If you are one of these people could you kindly do me a favour and go play chicken with an incoming 12 Gauge Round from point blank range. That is all
i know some.. i can name them too.. neh, they know themselves..
Yup, one of my pet hates when the more experienced members on sites (not just here) are rude to new members.
We all started out once, treat people the way you would like to be treated!
Now p*ss off......
Use Search, you'll save thousands (of posts).
You could've used search and save us from another thread talking about helpful people
It relieves stress being a **** to others online knowing you won't get shot for it afterwards. Words from a stranger can't hurt enough for it to be an actual problem can it? There are now two active similar threads on this issue.

Quoted for truth.
When I joined XDA I took a couple days and just searched for what I needed, learned as much as I could and THEN asked questions.
The problem here is many of the veteran users are tired of people coming in, and in their first ever post asking for something that if they literally did 5 minutes of searching would find.
As well if you are not technical or its hard for you to understand what you're doing and why, you should reconsider rooting your phone as there is nobody but this place to come help you fix it if you screw up. And while yes it is simple to do, its also easy to screw up.
So the vets see these people come in, ask (or sometimes demand) step by step instructions because they have no clue, and have proven they can't take 5 minutes to try and figure it out themselves. They are now jaded to it after it happens at least 4 or 5 times a week, so cut them some slack.
Answer me this. Would you go out, buy a Corvette, then decide you want to supercharge it so you go to the local corvette club meet. Walk in and say "which of you guys is gonna tell me exactly how to put this supercharger on my car, and I've never turned a wrench in my life." Seriously, what happens here is the digital equivalent.

+1. I find it much faster/easier using google to search xda than the actual xda search function.
I also did the same as Rogue Leader. I spent a few days scanning through alot of threads before posting and i found most of the answers i were looking for.
Everyone understands that newbs have to start somewhere (since i was a newb/still am lol when i got the xplay) but surely most people will have been on a fourm before? Or have used google to search before? No excuses really.
In the time it takes for someone to reply or after the flaming has stopped they could have easily found the answer they were looking for.

What you decide to do or not to do does not depend on others action or doing here on xda. You choose to be rude and a ****. How come you feel this resentment. You most have an anger problem and they are just easy targets for ventilating that agro. Who are you to judge others wheter they derserve a flaming or not. You clearly state your own level of knowledge in your own post and you can whine all day long and lay the responsebility on them for you being a ****. I'm gobsmacked over people like you, you take as little responsebility as the multi posters does. Learn how to behave or shut up and don't bloody answer nor look in those threads. Do yourself that favor.

That one was definitely me... But, I am pretty sure I didn't have those mistakes in the original post.
That could have all been me But that definitely was a time when there was like 100 threads asking the same question and you decided to make a whole new thread even though there were several threads just below yours that had already been answered.
I am one of those people who actually will ask google before asking the internet for answers, and it has saved me a lot of flames.
ALSO, you posted the same thread twice, maybe three times and I fkn hate people who think they will get more attention by the continuous posting of the same question! Just like the 12 year old who has been posting multi-threads asking how to fix his wi-fi in all the forums.
TBH you still annoy me... Must be the "acting innocent" thing... Grinds my gears, bro.

I totally agree.
When I first joined here, I found the arrogance and rudeness of certain members truley awful.
Worse, people seemed to follow these 'respected' members like sheep.
It is like this most places on the internet, keyboard warriors are aplenty.
But even still...it still shocks and irks me the treatment I received here initially.
Since then I have found many nice, helpful and knowledgable people on these forums and have learnt to ignore the billy big shots.

Anal beads run Android? Man droid really does do "everything"!
But when you type in your "title" when you create a new thread, other threads with the same name pops up. So if you start typing like "How do i ROOT my xperia play?" I'll promise you that some threads about the exact same topic will pop up
if you want to use google search inside the xda forum, use this chain in google: "site:http://forum.xda-developers.com/" + the thing you want to search. For example:
site:http://forum.xda-developers.com/ rooting xperia play
Of course, this applies to any other website.
My goodness lol I know a lot about hacking, my phone, roms ,general troubleshooting and a lot of other things and also a lot about forums and the vermin that live in them. I just don't say much because I never was a forum posting guy I'm a do it my self guy. Throwing "NOOB" around to some guy/girl that just wants to know how to operate or troubleshoot his/her galaxy that he paid a great deal for is b.s. I read countless a** hole replies that don't even answer the question, a lot of the answers are just failed attempts to sound like the "cool" sarcastic guy that sits in the back of a remedial math class. I've been coming to xda since I had a g2 (never registered) and slowly and slowly the community is turning from people that would kind of help you to d**ks with a false sense of entitlement that reply with a totally unreasonable response. Yeah it's common knowledge to a lot of people but some people really don't know what they are doing and don't want a brick and need the help of this lovely community. I'm not ranting its just my opinion on whats CLEARLY going on if you don't like it f*** off and go fly a kite.
I do not support smart guys who constantly ask eta questions though.
The problem I see is that, as you say, these people don't know what they're doing and want the information handed to them.
I've never seen a post get a BAD response when the person clearly outlined their problem and explained what they already knew and why their research wasn't getting them anywhere.
The people that DON'T make posts like that need to do some research - not just have the information thrown at them for their own good. Think about if you just gave someone information on how to build and operate a bomb without them knowing how it worked and how to do it safely. Sure, they're probably not going to lose fingers - but they could brick an expensive device and it's kinder to give some tough love and pointing in the direction of research, knowledge, and understanding before they make a mess that they can't get out of.
In the words of H.P. Lovecraft : "Do not call up that which you can not put down".
Yeah I know what your saying and I agree. Just that some people ask questions live what boxes should I check in Odin, whats a zip lol, should I wipe b4 or after, what original dev, how do I root. Those a simple questions and they are common knowledge to a lot (maybe not how do I root because many things can go wrong if you derp it up). These can get simple responses or links but ppl will post turd responses like noon read the op, we answers that in 2011 look it up, just don't root. Stuff like that I'm not saying go in to depth with a dude asking about something when he doesn't ever know the dos, don'ts and risk. I know I'm not the only one there's threads about it.

I agree 100%. The thing that irritates the F out of me is the few that run around here acting like they know it all... Then ***** and say search, then like each others post for being asshats to someone who asked a simple question that deserved a simple answer. I do occasionally call them out but it doesn't do any good.

Lol yeah one guy asked does any one know where I can find the inverted YouTube I'm new.. A did responded Noob you'll find it in a different section. Thank me for the help.
Then a civilized guy posted a link to the apk (which is simple to find for the average user) and said to the guy above something like I think this is what you meant to do but the xda douche in you did not allow it.

Because they think they are cool when in reality they are more noobish than the person they are replying to. There's a simple if you don't have anything good to say dont say nothing at all...but I guess their mamas didn't teach them that common sense.
For some reason they rather reply being a total dipsh*t than simply IGNORE the post. Don't get me wrong some of the replies Realy are deserving like the ones when the person constantly whines about their problem and want to b*tch aT the dev...most of the time noobs...such as my self just want simply answered because we've search and couldn't find the answers or we found an answers but it pertains to another device.
They probably didn't get much love from high school so wants to be the cool jogs here

From the moderator
To all in this thread.......
Most of the moderators would appreciate it if everyone were considerate, kind and patient........BUT......... that said,
Some do act with arrogance and inconsideration, ......report them we are here to assist.
Understand that the important responsibilities of a member is to Read enough that they can understand what to ask and how to ask it.
One of the overriding problems with XDA is we (the members) are not from one country, or one culture..so, many have to use Google translator or some other method to post in in English.
This creates an additional layer of misunderstanding, which in turn, makes things even more complicated.
Couple all of this with have a bunch of adolescent kids posting as well..... and now you have described XDA.......
So, with this explanation......it basically means to be patient, polite and considerate and when others begin to troll, or flame report them, this keeps these inconsiderates participation to a minimum
Unfortunately, this is thread is way to prone to escalating a flame-war....
Thank you for posting and "venting" off some of the common frustration we all feel from time to time....
...........THREAD CLOSED..........

Posting Etiquette - Don't Anger a Developer
Been skulking here for a few days and now that I picked up my new S4 (!!!!), I'll be here alot (he said happily).
I'm noticing a lot of snottiness already.
It sure does ruin my experience seeing the trolls that cannot resist scolding people or just generally being snotty.
Let's set the tone early and all promise to be nice to each other.
An example that comes to mind are the people who can't resist chiding people for not doing a search first. Myself, I have had the worst luck searching but always do before posting.
Just my two cents.
One thing I hate is when people ask stupid questions that could have been answered with a simple search, sometimes just a google search would answer it. Although I'm being very nice since this is a new device and for some people this may be their first Samsung phone so I'm a little lenient right now. Anyways welcome, and I'm sure you'll love this phone.

You make my point nicely, Thanks.
You don't like someones post, you can always just ignore it. Thanks for being so lenient.
I was always taught that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. And as I said, speaking from experience, searching doesn't always find results here.
Newbies need our help....not to be scolded, chided, attacked, or otherwise harrassed. I've seen other forums here that are ruthless. And have heard people comment that they are afraid to ask a question or apologise ahead of time lest the trolls swoop in.
This is all discussed elsewhere in the forum rules....likely under Etiquette.
Again just trying to help set the tone. If I know the answer, I'll answer. If I don't I won't. Either way, I promise to be nice.

And I speaking from experience is if you search you'll find the answer. I understand newbies need help sometimes, HELP not be held by the hand thru everything, cuz then they will never learn. We were all newbs at one point or another so if I could search and find answers without having to ask stupid questions ( and no the only stupid questions aren't the ones you don't ask) then so can others.

THANK YOU!!! I'd considered posting a thread just like this days ago. This is my first time in Tmobile, but I've been around XDA for a long time, and I've been appalled by some of the comments (consistently left by the same people). How hard is it to be nice or just abstain from commenting if you're just going to be a jerk. Thinking back many of the post that received nasty comments were or up by people with only 1-20 post on XDA. They're noobs, people, just like we once were.
Just yesterday I answered a question about having an AT&T GS4 unlocked to use on T mobile. Yes, the post should have been in the AT&T forum, and it should have been in the Q&A section at the very least. But I knew the answer and have the information with a link to the appropriate thread. Kindly.
On a happier note, how awesome is this phone?!
OK, I'll bite only because this is my thread.
What gives you or anyone else the right to scold people?
Read the rules. It is explicitly said that trolling is not cool. And attacking people because their post does not meet your criteria is trolling.
And it makes you look bad.
@eflip88, I am not directing this directly at you. No disrespect intended. I asked for input. I appreciate the discourse.
I was speaking generally, at the people who DO feel the need to be jerks. Not at you or your actions. Although your reply summed it up nicely.

Dude I'm not scolding or attacking anybody, and don't talk about rules because the first rule is SEARCH.

Most of the time it takes less keystrokes to answer a question than to give someone a hard time. So it is usually more productive to be nice as well. ha ha
Peace.
Whats life without a little tough love?

There's just certain people that have an obsessive need for conflict...It doesn't matter whether it's the internet or anything else they do..They'll always look for the worst way to handle something.....Your best bet is to just ignore them and move on...They want you to respond, That's the point..To fuel their misery...It sucks to see but it's never going to stop..especially when they have a computer screen to feel 9ft tall behind..
The worst is when people actually write out some long reply about searching instead of freaking linking the person to the relevant post, so annoying....
I have been on XDA long enough to know that people always want instant gratification to their needs. It is like they are entitled to it. Instead of searching like the way forums are meant to be. Day after day, they kept posting the same freaking question. There are community members who participate in these forums, and there are leechers who just come for the information and leave as quickly once they got what they wanted. These leechers usually dont even search the forums for answers, they just ask questions that have been answered like more than 20x (literally). We can be nice up to a point, but after that, you gotta take out the broom to sweep them away. Sometime it is better not to have than to have.

Lol, why would I be crying? The only people who would be crying are those so called leechers who wont be getting any help and get scolded in the forums.

Well attacking someone doesn't constitute as trolling but is certainly against the rules either way.
If I see that someone has asked a question which can easily be found via a search, I will give the user the answer and mention that it was easily found by SEARCHING and that they'll have more luck finding things if they actually search first. <-- As you can see, it gets the point across that they should search but does so in a friendly manner.
If, however, I see that the same person is constantly asking questions which require extremely little effort to find the answer, I'll change my response to something like "Here's a great idea BUT it's quite revolutionary and might be a bit shocking at first.
Try using the search feature this site has provided us with.
I told you it was shocking. It's fine though because once you've got used to the idea, you'll realise that I'm actually correct in what I'm saying and you will then begin to search for answers (otherwise you might find yet another really shocking post).
Normally I wouldn't respond like this but this isn't exactly the first time you've asked a question which would only take a few seconds of searching. Whenever you have a question, you don't even think of searching. You just come straight out and ask it, without taking into consideration how dumb it could possibly make you look.
Believe it or not, this is a DEVELOPMENT site. Not a childcare site. Not a help desk. A development site. Are questions allowed here? Certainly but no one is here to hold your hand and give you all the answers. We also expect some work from you aswell. Even if that's simply searching before you post and actually paying attention to what you read, that's good enough.
You start doing that and then I can start to help you if you have any real problems." <-- This is not so friendly but well deserved and there's nothing wrong with this response in the slightest. It's very rare I'll make a post like this but when I do it's really effective and the user ends up becoming a better member because of it.
I totally agree with your intentions though and hope a better attitude can ensue across the entirety of XDA so that it can become a friendlier place to be
