[Opinions] What should I do with my “SPARE” Galaxy Nexus? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Last week, my SGN tried to commit suicide by jumping face first from a ~4 foot shelf onto the hard concrete floor in my garage. Fortunately the phone survived and was otherwise 100% functional, but the glass was completely shattered.
I was able to use an upgrade I had for another line to purchase a second Nexus at a heavily discounted corporate price.
Later that I day, I discovered this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474979
…where I learned that I was able to ship the Nexus to Samsung directly for glass repair.
So in the next week or two, I be receiving my original Galaxy Nexus back to me in perfect re-furbished condition. So what should I do with it:
Sell it?
What is the market for these phones out of contract? Would somebody be willing to pay ~$400 for a complete SGN with LTE sim card?
Give it to the wife?
Nah, she barely uses the DroidX I gave her back in December.
Convert to a desktop Android?
Buy an MHL cable, BlueTooth keyboard / mouse and a new monitor; and then use for general surfing and billpaying?
Keep it as a backup for the next time the phone is dropped and the glass shatters?
I’m leaning towards selling it myself, but I’m not convinced somebody is willing to spend this much for a phone from an otherwise unknown seller.
Thoughts?

Sell or use is as a testing platform for different ROMs. Spare parts in case your phone really commits suicide or do what I would most likely do, sell it to one of us poor folks!
lol

For the sake of science!

Why not sell it? lol. $450 in your pocket.

I would say keep it as a back up phone. U never know when u might need it. And also use it to test other roms. That way u won't mess up your good phone in case something happens

Sell it asap. The sooner you sell, the more $ you get for it.
Put the money on the side for the next "best" phone. SGS3 looks promising ;-)

If you're serious, I'm looking to get a spare nexus (non-work related phone) that i can do some real dev work on. I'd be very interested, so PM me if you want.

I'd sell it and invest the money on accessories for the other GNEX.

will incredible s digitizer fit on inc 2?

Long story short, power is out at my house from hurricane and i cracked my phone screen while trying to charge it with an extension cord and when i ordered a new digitizer off ebay i didnt realize it was for an inc S and not an inc 2(which i have) and was wondering if this would still fit my phone
did you beat it with the end of the extension cord? LOL. it will fit, im not sure if it will work or not. not sure if the gsm and cdma versions used same components.
Did it work?
It fit but i did a ****ty job of installing it and the phone died a few months later and i ended up getting a galaxy nexus which is amazing
I know right!! I'm about to buy a DInc2 (some dude is offering me one for just $120) there's no krakken on it but I despise carriers defacing a device, they don't make phones!! And I want to try to bring it to straight talk

So let me get this straight; you want to replace a perfectly good digitizer because it says "Verizon" on it?
Sent from my Incredible 2 running Zeus 1.3
I would do that if I was reasonably confident enough that I could install the new digitizer successfully. I resent that carriers brand their logo on a phone I bought, paid for, and own.
I bought this phone. I resent the subliminal advertising on it every time I look at the screen while on my phone. I already see enough advertising in my day: to add it to my personal effects is an insult.

have you also taken off the badges off your car? TV? Htc logo off the battery cover? I can name a million more things. Assuming you got the 2 year price, verizons logo is there for a reason.
If you want a phone that is unbranded, start your own provider company, make a contract with a phone maker and mandate that no badges be present on the phones. Problem solved

Worth the wait?

So my phones been broken since August, and I have no backups. In other words, I haven't had a phone since mid-August. Anyway, I just got some money for my birthday and job. Should I wait until the Galaxy Nexus comes out for tmo in late November? If not, suggest getting any other phone?
EDIT:hmm alright. I need a phone.. Im trying not to spend the most amount of money because im going to buy the Nexus during christmas time, but can anyone steer me in the right direction in buying a used phone off craigslist? Preferably a decent one? Price Range $100-$275. I have T-mobile but any phone thats compatible whether its unlocked or not I'll be willing to get. I'm in jersey BTW, in case any of you want to give it a look.
if you read this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1316800
you'll know you're in for a very long wait
but it might be worth it, depending how fan are you of stock AOS
If you have enough money to buy one unlocked for the full price, then you should hopefully have it by this month end.
If you are looking for tmo subsidized, then there is a possibility that you might have wait longer.

Just do the research and decide what's good for you.

Aria is old and doesn't have AWS for 3G on T-mo. G2 is good. You could always get a MyTouch 4G (not slide) or an original Galaxy S very cheaply.
Whats it matter if you're only going to use it for 1-2 months then get rid of it anyways? Get something that works and is cheap.
I'm not sure about your area, but I could find Nexus S for around $200

This is already being discussed in the other threads. That page shows the MARKETING push for after Black Friday, which is including the Galaxy Nexus.
That does not at all indicate when the phone will be sold. As you notice, the map shows the iPhone being marketed too, that doesn't mean the iPhone isn't on sale till then

Calling all Gnex owners, opinions needed

Hey everyone,
I have been given a gnex for free by a coworker after another coworker dropped it and spilled coffee on it. It wouldnt turn on and the glass is cracked. Beauty of being the "android guy" at work I suppose. After trying a few troubleshooting steps like getting the phone into download mode, i tried a friends gnex battery in it and it booted right up. Its only the glass thats cracked, lcd and digitizer are fine as far as i can tell from using it for several hours. One 8 dollar battery from amazon later i have a functioning free gnex upgrade.
I thought id be able to live with the cracked screen but i think id like to replace it, i like my phones like i like my women.. Do you guys foresee anything substantially better than the gnex coming out in the next few months? Im up for an upgrade in about 6 months from my droid charge (company phone) and then ill have to convince my boss to go for it...or samsung wants 160 to replace the screen, which of course will be coming out of my pocket.
Would you guys put almost an upgrade fee cost into getting a gnex or wait?

Enjoy the free GNex for a few months, then enjoy your free upgrade. Plus, you can sell the Gnex once you get a new phone
Replace the screen...you can sell it for much more, if and when something better comes along and catches your eye.....like the next Nexus!
The GNex is already six months old, and the next one should be out in Oct or Dec
Screen replacement is what...$20-$60? Do it. Save your upgrade for something like the next Nexus.

Unfortunately... no Glass + LCD + Digitizer is all one piece on this phone, i thought the same. It's strange, samsung will fix the screen and pay shipping both ways for 160. The cheapest I can find to buy just the part is almost $200. I would be dumb to not go for the samsung deal.
I think I'm going to call samsung back tomorrow and send it off and then I guess in about two weeks I'll be officially on a gnex Then let the xda way of life begin.

If I was buying today I would absolutely buy the Nexus again based solely off of Dev support.
I think you should fix the screen and enjoy it. $160 seems like a great price to get all of that work done correctly including shipping. Just keep an eye on the phones for the next 6 months, especially the next Nexus line. You could always sell the nexus for some pocket cash if you decide to upgrade.
I would have to agree with the majority. Def fix the screen and enjoy the abundance of awesome dev support.

HAHA! Now I feel dumb
Try buying a second hand nexus for $170. It's basically impossible.
Swypesation
Also, keep in mind you're essentially paying what you would pay for the GNex on contract, without signing a contract. So you're still getting a hell of a deal, even with that screen repair.
So you have a phone that will work for a long while, without having signed a contract, for cheaper than it would have cost to sign a contract. Great deal.

Is the Galaxy Nexus still worth buying?

I need a new phone and I would like it to be Nexus. Should I go ahead and buy the Galaxy Nexus on Google Play or should I wait for the next Nexus? Oh, and price is also a priority, does anyone think the next nexus will be more expensive?
are new phones always more expensive than old ones?

I can absolutely guarantee that the next Nexus will launch at more than $350. Probably more like $500+.
I would have to say yes.
Given that the Nexus S received Jelly Bean, the Galaxy Nexus is a great phone to get for the long run. It'll probably get Key Lime Pie (and a release or two beyond). Pretty nice performance. Plus, stock Android (the way it was meant to be) is surprisingly full-featured and maturing. (And I'm still stuck on ICS.)

I think you will have a hard time selling the current nexus in another 6 months time considering people only want to buy newer phones unless you virtually sell it for nothing, only iPhones seem to hold their value over longer times because their more popular , older android phones don't sell very well.

I just got mine the other day for $300. I wish I got the GS3 instead, but I dont keep phones long so there was no point in dropping $200 more.
Long as the development is still rolling, its never too late for a phone.
How do people figure the S is worth more?

Just had a discussion about this with some friends. One of them was asking if it was worth it buying the Galaxy Nexus.
Before I could answer and tell him that I at first was concerned (specs weren't anything amazing even when it was released, lack of SD card slot), another buddy who had gotten the HTC One X put it simply: "Get the Nexus! Best value you can get for $350..."
And he's right. It's at half the price it was when it first launched, and has been, and will continue, getting updates from Google. And it's practically the easiest phone to unlock, root, & flash, even if you don't like pure, stock Android. You can't go wrong.

It's not about which phone has the greater resale value. It's about which phone has a lower cost of ownership.
Buy a GNex for $350 and sell for $150 a year from now. Cost of ownership is $200.
Buy an iPhone 4S for $650 and sell for $350 a year from now. Cost of ownership is $300.
And I'm being very conservative with my numbers. The difference is probably greater.

This. Not to mention I sold a year old g2x for 200 and they were junk. I'm convinced by this time next year it'll still be an easy sale to get at least $200 probably $250 out of a good shape GSM Gnex.
But resale wasn't the question, yes, its actually the only phone worth buying off contract if your wanting brand new.

I am personally very happy with my Gnex and I do not plan to change it, except for the next Nexus. But I am not in a hurry to do so. It has a great battery life and is butter smooth. I also can play any 3D game.
- the screen could be better but I got used to
- the camera is bad at some light conditions
- the screen isn't scratch resistant (need a screen protection: XO skins screen protector made me happy)
- 13Gb of free storage isn't enought
And well that is all and it is non blocker for me. With the price drop in the US it definitely worth buying it if you "need" a new phone. If you don't, wait the next Nexus at the end of the year.

Is it still worth it to buy?

Well I know this is gonna mostly be my first and last thread, sorry. But anyways onwards to the question is, is it still worth it to buy one? I've found that my local Koodo's Mobile (Canadian phone provider) is selling the Samsung Galaxy S2 X for $300 dollars off contract brand new. Which it is identical to the T-Mobile variant. I do realize that the phone itself is about a year old, and was again wondering is it still worth it to buy one, or wait until the next nexus phone or flagship phone instead?
My intent for the purchase would be honestly to get a gift for my mom, since she still on an old phone. She isn't too tech savvy, so she'll be using mostly Facebook, Skype, Youtube, Netflix on WiFi, being that the phone is so large, the pricing and all. If not would an iPhone be easier for her to use because of iOS?
TL;DR - $300 Samsung Galaxy S2X/T-Mobile Samsung S2, should I buy or not, or buy something simple like an iPhone for her to use?

I think I might just get it, and if she doesn't like it I'll keep it for myself. Since her contract is about to end soon, so I'll just pay for an upgrade to whatever phone. I have been eyeing AOKP on my Nook Color, that I got in the states, but haven't full commitment and stayed with CM 7.2.
I have another question which is about the phone itself, which I know I shouldn't post, but. What is the recommend kernel and rom if I should even consider rooting it, which I do plan to if I purchase it. If its compatible with Sixaxis Controller, is it strong enough to emulate say something like a PS1 or a N64, is the toolkit the easiest way to root and last question I swear, does do I have to purchase a certain type of adapter for MHL or is it a universal thing?
EDIT: Because I plan to make it somewhat of a gaming hub where I can emulate my favorite classic games, and use it like a HTPC since XBMC is being released I believe.
Aokp is fine running psx, haven't tried n64. Haven't tried sixaxis either. Actually any of the popular roms are fine.... This phone is pretty beastly. If anything you can stick to the provided kernel that flashes with the ROM or tdj maybe eugene? I'm not sure if he has updated his lately. Btw you should really flash a custom ROM if you give it to your mom because stock ics trend to be buggy.

As much as I cannot stand an iPhone, Apples BS,etc. The iPhone is definitely user friendly for basic functions. Apps that we have are free but an IPhone user isn't typically wanting to tether, NFC, or anything else we have as a feature.
I encourage you to buy one used. Maybe that way, you could not give direct profit to the already rediculous "patent thief".
Let us know what you decided.

As does T-Mobile. And about previous comment of iPhone being user friendly, android is even more user friendly. Yes d you're but going to hack the **** out of it then I recommend touch wiz miui.

Yeah I've notice the Chinese made MIUI,is similar to the iOS in someways. I think I'll buy the phone brand new for the sake of it, let her test it out replacing her regular phone for a few days, and if she likes the hardware and how the touchscreen works I'll install MIUI for her. If not, no point returning and I might as well keep it, install a rom which I like, and replace my Blackberry. Again like I said her contract is about 6 months away, they'll call her saying "3 Year Contract blah blah blah", which then I'll do the honors of paying for the upgrade myself.
And I do say, the price bought outright blows the iPhone out of the waters.
That's an amazing price for a brand new hercules.. Not to mention it's still one of the best phones you can get.

Just get her the SGS2 and be done with it, way better phone
Get her something easy to use. I got my father a pantech crossover and he just couldn't get it. He was so good with his blackberry so I figured it would be easy. Wrong.
If you do get her an s2 make sure you set it up for her.
If your choices are the S2X and the iPhone, I would take the S2X. You're not gonna find a new iPhone for $300, and iPhones don't have expandable storage. If you want easy navigation try flashing MIUI like mentioned, or maybe JoyOS which is basically an IOS clone.
As long as it isn't rooted with all that mumbo jumbo crud, galaxy s phones are total parent friendly! I jumped my mom into the Android game with a galaxy s 4g and she loves it. Hell, every time I show up with my phone she always gets impressed by it.
300$ is a total steal for what you're getting and you should totally do it!

Parents can handle android! I gave my mom an old Optimus T and showed her how to play words with friends and she's old lol.
Just got it on contract with TMobile. I looked at the s3, and couldn't really justify paying $130 more for the s3 than the s2. They are both dual core 1.5 ghz phones with 8mp cameras that take full hd video. Whatever else it has just wasn't worth the extra $. Lots of other people will do the same math.

Wow, right when I was about to buy it, the Galaxy Nexus comes out for $300 dollars outright at Mobilicity another Canadian phone provider! I'm so conflicted now, okay well, I need you guys to be unbiased and help me choose the better phone deal. I do realize you guys have given me some insight on the Samsung, but damn.
