Last week, my SGN tried to commit suicide by jumping face first from a ~4 foot shelf onto the hard concrete floor in my garage. Fortunately the phone survived and was otherwise 100% functional, but the glass was completely shattered.
I was able to use an upgrade I had for another line to purchase a second Nexus at a heavily discounted corporate price.
Later that I day, I discovered this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474979
…where I learned that I was able to ship the Nexus to Samsung directly for glass repair.
So in the next week or two, I be receiving my original Galaxy Nexus back to me in perfect re-furbished condition. So what should I do with it:
Sell it?
What is the market for these phones out of contract? Would somebody be willing to pay ~$400 for a complete SGN with LTE sim card?
Give it to the wife?
Nah, she barely uses the DroidX I gave her back in December.
Convert to a desktop Android?
Buy an MHL cable, BlueTooth keyboard / mouse and a new monitor; and then use for general surfing and billpaying?
Keep it as a backup for the next time the phone is dropped and the glass shatters?
I’m leaning towards selling it myself, but I’m not convinced somebody is willing to spend this much for a phone from an otherwise unknown seller.
Thoughts?

Sell or use is as a testing platform for different ROMs. Spare parts in case your phone really commits suicide or do what I would most likely do, sell it to one of us poor folks!
lol

For the sake of science!
Why not sell it? lol. $450 in your pocket.
I would say keep it as a back up phone. U never know when u might need it. And also use it to test other roms. That way u won't mess up your good phone in case something happens

Sell it asap. The sooner you sell, the more $ you get for it.
Put the money on the side for the next "best" phone. SGS3 looks promising ;-)

I'd sell it and invest the money on accessories for the other GNEX.

I use the paid version of unified remote:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.Relmtech.Remote
Thought ill do this to help people that are thinking of sending their phone in for repair.
If its fast, if they do a good job etc..
I called up Samsung UK at 9am UK time 21/05/12 and told them what's wrong with it
This is what is wrong with it;
The screen pops out about quater of a MM on the bottom right
-The phone doesnt always charge when connected to the charger (this has happened about 5times within a month)
-The phone switches off randomly sometimes (This has happened about 3 times within a month)
-Sometimes when i remove the charging cable. On the screen it says charging/ disconnected continuously, If i wasnt aware of it, it would keep happening and burn my screen since the same image is on the screen none stop (This has happened 2 times within two weeks)
-If i shake my phone i hear a rattle sound on the upper back of the phone (This has been there since i bought the phone)
-The touch screen isnt as responsive from when i bought it (I have to take my finger off the screen and try again sometimes)
-WiFi and 3G stops working and i have to reboot my phone to be able to use it (This has happened countless of times)
Some of these faults only happen sometimes but they have happened more then once within a short period of time.

Quite a lot right? lol. The women took it quite well haha.
They said the bag will be sent out within two working days with Royal Mail, and the repair will take from 5 to 10 working days. I have to send it with other information like proof of purchase contact details etc..
I asked what happens if they send it back and the same/ new faults are still there?
She said we will try and repair it again and if its no good on the 3rd try then they will send me a new one.
The call took about 20minutes. I was on hold for about 5minutes total.
So let the games begin.
ps I set this as my background for fun
LoL @ background!
hope they take care of it...
I got the package this morning around 11am while i was sleeping (i work nights) so i could of sent it today if some one woke me up -_-
Another thing.. the packaging they gave me is an utter joke.
Cheap bubble wrap thats about 2ft by 1ft and a plastic bag(envelope)
I used my own bubble wrap, cardboard, bubble wrap jiffy bag, some more bubble wrap then put it in the envelope with all the information they needed.
I think i over did it a bit but what can i say? Im a bit OCD on stuff like that lol.
I took lots of pictures of my phone so when they send it back to me.. if there is one mark that wasnt there before/ still has the same or new problems its going straight back.
I want to send it back three times because then they will send me a brand new one on the 3rd go haha.
I'm going to post it tomorrow morning.
Hope it works out for you.

I know. I'm trying to give them as many faults as possible to make it harder for them. I just want a new one cause the current one i have has problems.. i dont like repaired phones
My brother had an iphone4.. about 20days before the 1 year warranty ran out he went into the apple store and said the home button doesnt always work. The guy didnt even check it and gave him a brand new one.
I wish all companies had customer service like Apple... even if their products are meh.

lmao. You obviously don't know much about Apple customer service, it costs $99/year per device + $49/"incident". If you call 91 days after you purchase your device they won't even talk to you about your device/software or anything until you purchase the $99 service.
Every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage and 90 days of telephone technical support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends repair coverage and technical support to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone and adds coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage due to handling, each subject to a $49 service fee.1 With AppleCare+ for iPhone, Apple experts can help troubleshoot issues over the phone or at an Apple Retail Store. They’ll answer questions about iOS, Apple iPhone apps such as Mail, iMessage, and Calendar, and help you solve interconnectivity issues between your iPhone and Mac or PC. And if your iPhone needs service under the plan, Apple technical support representatives can even set up a repair during the same call.

One year hardware warrantee, 90 day tech support via phone. Which leaves much to be desired IMO. Almost all products offer 1yr hardware support, Android does not charge $99/yr to help you diagnose a problem over the phone. Imo saying Apple has superior customer service is so assbackards it borders on mentally challenged. As far as what I personally know about Apple and their CS, I've been an Apple device owner for years, same for Android. Both have good qualities, both have poor qualities. But I have no delusions of which are which. I'm not going off somebody else's experience, somebody who as far as I am concerned (since we don't have an XDA username for them) has no credibility on this forum. I posted the link and quote directly from Apples website, it's kind of hard to disagree with that, and if either of you would have actually read it you would have seen that hardware is warranted for 1yr.

I dont see why anyone would buy extended warranty .. its a rip off.

That was my whole reasoning, I don't see why anyone would rather HAVE to pay for the extended, much less pay for phone support during the normal warrantee period. Hopefully you are more than satisfied with your new device, I will be asleep in an hour but I'll come check it out tomorrow.

I have always owned and loved android devices since the g1. I always got carrier branded devices and switch every so often. I thought it would make sense to grab a gsm nexus so I started researching, and boy did I research. I thought that the price of a gnex from google is not bad and i had enought money to get one, but for whatever reason i figured i'd check ebay, but they sell for the same or more used. so I checked craigslist- on payday i saw what looked like a great deal... new gnex with extra battery 300, so i contacted the dude and met up about 40 minutes drive. the phone was in new condition there was the extra battery and vanilla ics, tried it made a call so i took it. while driving away i started playing with it.. i went to the camera app, got a message stating to insert sd card, i was like wth a gnex with an sd card. then i got a call the there was a flashing led at the bottom. i got home and examined it well, turns out its a fake ( my fingernail can operate the capacitve sereen) it looks so damn real... now im screwed out of 300 bux. I was so upset i went to google and got a new one, so I should have it soon... learnt my lesson well.- i really didnt think that fake phones existed and damn they did a great job... i think ill just give it to my son- he will by happy to have it
Pics or it didn't happen LOL. Can we see it? Wanna see how good of a "job" they did.

You didn't notice the feel of a resistive screen? It is distinctly different from a

Yeah that's a fake. The site even looks like amazon, with the way it's laid out and even some of the graphics.
This is why I like buying things eBay over CraigsList. eBay has gone to great lengths to protect buyers. With that being said it is such a pain any more to sell things on eBay (major hassle listing/shipping items, excessive fees, picky buyers) which is why I usually won't sell things on eBay any more.
In your case though you got a fake phone, which may have been hard to tell when you bought it but hypothetically if it were a Verizon phone for example it could have been completely real but may have been stolen and had a bad ESN. Even then though I believe you can check with the carrier to see if the ESN is clean. I guess what it boils down to is you just have to be very cautious whenever buying something from an 'un-trusted' source.
On a side note, I just received my Verizon Nexus that I bought on eBay for $240. This thing was listed at 'Used' but it is seriously in like new condition, not a scratch or scuff on it (and it came with a nice case). I am absolutely loving the phone so far. Only thing I don't like is that I didn't upgrade to it sooner.

I'm staying away from eBay and craigslist from now on, just for certain things I guess- i got a sweet shih tzu puppy for 300 bux on CL so I guess in the end it all evens out. I'll just get a simple mobile sim and give it to my kid, so its not a total loss, he will be happy with it. I'm just amazed of what a good job they did with it. and the fingernail test is how I narrowed it down - compared it to my girl's SG2. Im getting withdrawals waiting for the real phone to ship from google.

My phone was stolen today. I have it sim locked, so I guess if they try to take the sim out or turn the phone off and back on they're S.O.L.!!
I had GoSMS Find Phone plug-in installed but gah forgot to turn it on after my fresh install of JDevil's rom.

Nothing yet and everytime I call my phone now it rings a few times and says "The Subscriber you've dialed is not available or has traveled outside the coverage area" so either it's still turned on (Since it still rings a few times like normally or it's roaming and has no signal wherever it is.
Well I'm happy knowing the battery finally died on the thief, it goes straight the t-mo error message now even on *67 dialed calls, I don't think they were smart enough to know how to block calls. Also I'm kinda pleased cause my sim card lock has probably gotten the best of him now whenever he tries to power the phone back on and gets prompted to enter a pin. Plus I know no cellphone repair store will touch a sim card pin lock issue, especially if the person bringing in the phone has no information to give to them about my account. Plus even if he attempts to take the sim card out he'll still be prompted to enter a pin.
Today I'll be off to get a cheapo slider phone so I can text people easier until my replacement gets here.
Going with a ZoPo ZP950+, over at their forums it has a root guide, twrp and cwm support as well as LeWa and other custom rom's made for it even an internal sd card mod to increase the storage space to 2.95gb's and has pretty much the same spec's as the note 2, except it's a chinandroid.

Device tracking, improper unlock protection, it even takes a picture of the person trying to hack it and emails it to you. .
Not to mention GPS tracking of the device and geolocation if GPS is off.
Remote wipe of data also.
Check it out. ....cheers. ...and again very sorry. .g
lookout security FTW....had it for a long time now...
Aegis is awesome for Finding, locking, or wiping, your phone from another Cell.
i have done this plenty of times and even have it on my sons phone i can locate, or Turn off his or lock him out whenever i want. pretty slick little app if you ask me, Oh and its FREE. or was i dont know now.
Did you ever get this sorted out OP?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
Sorted as in getting it back? Nope, all I could do is a file a report to the police, when I tried to report the esn to at&t they said they couldn't find it and that apparently the seller on ebay never updated anything. I might have to contact him to tell at&t that he sold it to me and release the esn to me then try again.
E-mailed go dev about getting the code list and never once got a reply from them, I had to load GO SMS in Bluestacks and open find phone and get the codes from there, which nothing really ever worked since either a. the thief took the sim card out before I could use the codes with lostandroid or b. lostandroid wasn't able to start up for some unknown reason, maybe the phone was turned off or my gmail account wasn't active on the phone anymore and c. I forgot to start go sms find phone feature before it being stolen (You'd really think they'd make something like this that automatically starts once installed either over the pc or android!! LoL)
So I'm haha stuck right now on a old iphone 3g got it for a lil bit of cash, jailbroke it and loaded whited00r 6 (Based on 3.1.3 made to look like and have some features of iOS 6) since 4.2.1 was constantly looking up the phone and making me lag. I'm locking for a new phone now, I might either get a Note i717 LTE model and unlock it myself or take a risk with the ChinAndroid ZoPo ZP950+ for $250 roughly with shipping.
It's more of an ouch than anything, I got a damn good deal on one hell of a good and bad ass phone, then some jersey shore looking faggity assed ***** boy comes along with his dad and bro to offer to do some repairs, so my dad with dementia foolishly lets them in and never askes them for id or any type of contact info and then while outside helping one of them with something around the house he lifts my phone because apparently he can't afford to buy his own phone otherwise he wouldn't be doing unlicensed odd jobs with his family and stealing sh¡t.
I took a gamble on ebay with a seller who had no feedback and won it for $330.00 bucks, that's where it really hurts the price I got it for.
Well Kinda Good News
Well kinda good news, I won a manufacture refurbished i317 for $300 bucks.
One of my xda/facebook buddies said "damn man you're crazy why don't ya just buy a brand new phone." LoL! I told him when something better than the samsung note 2 comes out that I can afford I would. haha
My old i317 I got for $330 plus shipping and it had a small crack on the bottom of the screen, this other one is newly refurbished, sucks that I'll be $300 in the hole again but I figured what the hell it makes sense. I was gunna pay up to around $230 to $275 for a ChinAndroid phone with a lil bit larger screen same specs and no lte, so why not chuck in an extra $25 bucks and get what I really wanted </again>...

Some are and some aren't honestly, the details are always lost in poor translation and the advantage of it being a misconception from the consumer...
I'd say the safest to follow are Lenovo, ZTE and Pantech, they're to what they say they are...
I'm really anxiously waiting for this to hit the consumer market, see how much it is and possibly get it: ZTE Nubia Z7 rumoured to sport 6.3-inch display, 8-core CPU, 16-megapixel camera
But right now, I'm just happy as hell to have a Note 2 again. LoL
But yea with ChinAndroid phones it usually tends to go claim to 13mp equals a 8mp half the time and dual-core means a cpu and a gpu some of the time and so on. LoL
I'd still eventually like to get my hands on one just to give it a real consumer user run down and play around with to see how hackable it is plus how well it holds up. Maybe I'll get the ZoPo Zp950+ and do a side-by-side youtube review and comparison to the Note 2. haha
It's odd I done a esn check on a few sites and they all report back that it had a clean esn but the seller said it has a bad esn... Guess the only way to know for sure is to take it to or call AT&T themselves. Hopefully it it's clean!

Do yourself a favor and download android lost from the play store, it hides on the phone and theres a website where you can track it, take pictures with it, and do all kinds of other things if this ever happens again

Sadly, there is no tempered glass love for the MAXX... but the Moto X has a ton on ebay. What gives?!?
The Moto X is the only phone that matters because it's not a Droid and not basically tied to Verizon like the Droid Ultra/MAXX/Mini happen to be.
Just sheer economics at work: the Moto X is available from multiple carriers and is more popular because of that fact, so it will obviously make more money for companies that create accessories for that phone.
Hell, I went into a Verizon store the other day looking for a screen protector for my Mini - that's Verizon, the company that sells the damned phone in the first place - and they were like "We don't have any accessories for the Mini..." and they didn't. Not one thing for the Mini at all, which is pretty damned messed up in my opinion.
I don't know what kind of contract Verizon made long ago with Motorola for the Droid lineup, but I sure as hell wish it would come to an end soon.

Your first mistake was going into a Verizon store looking for anything. I can't count how many different ways Verizon makes their stores totally worthless.

Well they list the accessories online at their website and it says available in their retail outlets so... just glad I don't actually purchase stuff from Verizon I suppose.
People will say they don't exist. But I know for a fact that at one point last year they did. Best Buy or some store like that my friend in Indiana was able to buy a tempered glass protector for his droid maxx. I have searched high and low and made many calls, but no luck.
At work I just got an iPhone, so I ordered a tempered glass screen protector to go with it.
I didn't see what the big deal was until I actually got it. This thing is great. I really wish someone sold one for the Droid Maxx. I'm sure it's too late now, though.
