Guys,
There's a new tool comin' close on the horizon - Windows Phone Device Manager, applicable to all WP7 devices. So instead of trying in vain to use chevy, that could possibly harm yr machines, why not simply wait for the tool and help developer Julien Schapman (Schaps at XDA) and his beta team in some way.

Old News... we've known about TouckXperience for a while now.
could 15 minutes save you 15% on car insurance? have you been living under a rock?
yes....old news
this apps will be avaliable after first update from MS
it will actually be released before the update.
Because I was bored getting hundreds of emails from people asking me to send them WP Device Manager so they can continue to use pirated applications, and because there will be a short term solution for homebrews, I decided not to include my jailbreak tool. I respect other developers and I don’t want to be responsible for piracy, I’ve been contacted by Brandon Watson from Microsoft and I wish to be involved in the official homebrew support on Windows Phone.

And Schaps comes through with the vaporware again!! Honestly, I don't think he even does half the stuff he promises. Kinda like a mobile app politician.
Thats good news for us, yup. But schap mentioned that jailbreak tool will not be included and I wonder when NoDo comes, and with no jailbreak, how can I use schap's wp device manager?...

I asked a very similar questiom on Schap's Forum, but got no response. I can only assume that he has found a way to deploy homebrew apps without using the Developer's Tool Hack, such as Chevron. I do believe that he stated this would work after NoDo. I coukd be wrong because I can't find the quote.

I don't think it would be just app deployment cuz you could modify tiles, icons, wi-fi&BT settings, registry and etc and also exchange all kinds of files incl. office between PC and phone.
Besides I fear that as soon as so much expected nodo update goes public chevy will become no-go
chevy is no go
but is chevy a jailbreak or a sideload unlocker? Developers are working on a bonafide jailbreak that gives us really nice admin access...let's allow some of them to work their magic
as far as txp goes, we'll see I'm a beta so if I get a magical email about this, I'll post a story on it...

I generally don't care so much about not being able to:
1. transfer sms and contacts TO sim
2. sync doc, txt, and pdf files, offline, through Zune
3. sync flac or divx files
4. make an offline backup of contacts or of the whole phone configuration
5. create new accent colors
6. toggle wifi/gps/3g data/bluetooth with a single tap from the home screen
7. dictate sms or other speech orders in my native language
etc...
All of the above limitations (and some more) can be tolerable at some degree because of WP7 general superiority in other levels.
BUT...
I'm really pissed off with Microsoft...They have totally abandoned open market phones...First, we had a major error with Mango for LG update, that forced some people to flash a new official rom in order to get it. I never got a tethering update for my open LG and now I don't even get the latest official 7740 update. I don't f$%^ care about carriers. I bought an officially OPEN device and I demand support, or else they can stop selling us illusions...

Blame your OEM, not Microsoft for not getting tethering. They are the ones delivering the proper drivers needed for tethering to be enabled. The feature is already built in in Mango. Concerning 7740 you're right. But it has been released when? Yesterday? No update so far has reached all users at the same time. It has always taken a few weeks until every single Windows Phone user out there received an update. Knowing that 7740 won't change much, I personally do not really care about when I will receive it.
So far I didn´t get the latest 7740 update either, but I installed it manually with cab sender.

It doesn't fix the keyboard disappearing issue, so it's pretty much useless. This is by far the biggest annoyance for me right now. Keyboard disappears 10+ times when i'm typing a SMS. And in some apps you can't bring back the keyboard by touching the input box. I have to copy/paste and try again.

You are right here, but this wouldn't have happened if Microsoft had put strict rules around its ecosystem. It's unacceptable for such a unified quality concept to have basic specs like tethering, managed almost randomly (at will) by the OEMs without Microsoft's supervision. LG has released the firmware for branded phones (so, there is no arguing here that they couldn't have released it because of hardware restrictions) and totally rejected all of those people who have open phones. WHO controls this type of marketing anarchy around one of the most innovative, popular products of the world?
I'm shocked by this management attitude, because I'm a Microsoft customer for over 18 years and I know very well that they are aces in product support. As I mentioned earlier, ιn my first post, this is not the only fault Ι've been through and I'm looking forward to see this company measuring its actions with responsibility and care but, right now I'm totally disappointed.

I have made one in the specific LG e900 forum as well, because I use an open LG device, so, the discussion exists in two places to be seen by people who have as well as those who don't have an LG device, but they do have an open device with similar problems.

Download: www.wp7roottools.com
NEW: WP7 Root Tools SDK 1.1 for developers
Apps that make use of this SDK will need to get privileged access by WP7 Root Tools or you need a Full Unlocked ROM. With this SDK I hope to give the Windows Phone homebrew community a boost. I encourage all developers to download the SDK and experiment with it.
Changes in version 1.1:
FIX: A bug in registry access
FIX: The documentation was improved to reflect changes from the version 1.0 release
Changes in version 1.0:
FIX: Serveral bug-fixes in the FileStream class
FIX: Renamed "RegistryHyve" to "RegistryHive". This was a typo. This is a breaking change! Rename this in your existing code!
NEW: void Environment.WindowsRestart()
NEW: void Environment.WindowsShutdown()
NEW: void Environment.WindowsSleep()
For a complete list of homebrew apps that use this SDK go here.
If you build a cool app using this SDK, let me know. I'd like to see the SDK being made to good use
Happy programming!

Hi Heathcliff74. I am not sure, if your SDK supports FTP. If not, I offer simple FTP client library (still without managed wrapper) for including to SDK (for development of FTP clients + HTTP all content downloading applications, may be also for Chrome porting etc.). It is a port of very old opensource, we must study licension first probably. All input/output is realised by STL strings, then managed marshalling will simple.

Hi all, I asked about App Studio WP7 compatibility on MS Developer Network and i got some interesting replies:
You can convert WP8 apps to WP7.x.

...Take a WP8 project and set the build target to WP7.1 (I'll have to try this, not sure if this is an option at all)

...You have to create a new windows phone project 7.1 and add all the code files from the wp8 project. Of course this assumes you are not using any wp8 only features.

If this solution really works, could someone with WP SDK installed (I'm using Win7 ), 'port' apps like 6Tag, 6sec, Instagram, Temple Run to our WP7.x devices?

I really need to know. I'm still on 10512
It doesn't appear to be working properly on my device. I updated my 1520 from build 10536 with some APKs installed and running correctly, but after updating to 10581 the apps show in my list and immediately crash upon launch.
So bad ? is there a way to convert downloaded apks to w10m by recompiling codes?
Not working for me too
Way to take the one gleaming light of hope that 10 mobile had and squash it, along with my willingness to keep using that OS.
I'm sure they will get it back as soon as they fix performance issues.
I'm not, but I think there's a good chance.
The only thing we need to get it back to work is new windows bridge package that will allow us to connect to android inside phone. Btw. last update killed apps already installed on phone too

Interesting to see whether Android app source code needed for that or it can build a Windows 10 app directly from APK. The latter would be huge (though less realistic, I guess)

I'll say there's no chance to build appx from apk. Unless MS develops a miracle tool, the devs will need to build the apps for w10. As long as we have the app source code, that's cool. If not, then it all comes down to the original developer.

Android app (which doesn't use NDK) is simply a java binary, which is resources + java bytecode which can simply be decompiled into java source code which then can be compiled into appx - nothing magical. Tricky part comes with apps using NDK, that's something much harder to work with in this context.
