Face Unlock: Could it be faster? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi,
A few months ago while I was watching Samsung announce the Galaxy Nexus for the first time, I remember them saying Face Unlock was so fast that they actually had a delay so that "it didn't look like there was no security at all".
That said, does that mean that there could be a possibility to remove that delay?
On our device face unlock takes a while because the camera needs time to start, then we have to wait for it to recognize our face. Maybe we can get it to work faster?
Discuss.

Dude mine works fast as hell its just lighting and all that if your saying the time it takes while its black try setting cpu higher see if it makes a difference

I tried the face unlock on the ICS rom and honestly I didn't even notice a delay the thing was fast as hell....

Face unlock is fast at recognizing the face, on our phone it takes 2-3 seconds for the camera to start up, at least for me and that's what the OP is talking about.
As far as I know that's not caused by a delay its just the camera software/hardware limitation maybe it can be improved in the future by Samsung but it could be a hardware limitation.
Also the phone may be waking up at a low frequency which could cause the delay as well.

It seems to forget my face after a while and I end up using the pin almost every time.

This is what makes sense to me, and that's something people are just gonna deal with when you think about battery life of keeping the system able to pull up instantly.

I made a funny face and kept forgetting that I did. lol It was fun for a little while but low lighting it sucks.

Wonder if we could somehow get face unlock for v3.x.x ?

[Q] Extremely Slow Screen Wake Up Delay?

Just picked up the phone today and noticed a long delay between pressing the power button and the screen waking up. When it is plugged in there is no delay at all. The delay occurs whenever the phone is disconnected from a power source. It is about a 2 second delay. Is anyone else experiencing this? Best Buy didn't have another unit and the Sprint store was useless and wouldn't unplug their demo unit to compare.
I saw a thread concerning the standard Galaxy S II, but nothing Epic 4G Touch specific.
Thanks.
*update*
Just to make things perfectly clear, here is a video of the delay time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqJc_nYuwac
*older update*
Downloaded Soft Locker Free and it allows the phone to instantly wake with no delay by bypassing a deep sleep mode. I'm unsure about how detrimental this is to the battery, but at least it's a fix. I'd still like to know if all Epic Touch phones have the wake up lag, though.
mine is doing this too.. are you using a SD Card wallpaper? I am. not sure if thats affecting things.
I have not noticed any delays on mine.
I have noticed this as well. I'm using a stock wallpaper.

You shouldn't do that, it will be detrimental to your battery. Deep sleep mode means that the processor is technically off, provided the phone doesn't have any tasks to run while the screen is off.
Its perfectly natural for your phone to wake up immediately when plugged in, because that's how samsung designed the galaxy's. No need to deep sleep when the phone's getting a charge.
By restricting your phone from sleeping (affectionately referred to as wake lock),your forcing your processor to run for nothing, most likely at 200mhz. When it's all said and done, I estimate you'll end up shaving off about 5 hours of battery life. Not worth it to me, just learn to deal with 1 sec it takes to wake up the phone.
On a lighter note, I find it amusing that you've installed an app that now makes the phone do something that is commonly known as a bug and a lot of people spend their time trying to squash. Lol.

The amount of threads I have read, the hundreds if not thousands of posts I have seen the hundreds of developers that have all chased wake-lock bugs are all disgusted right now. Thousands if not tens of thousands of man hours have gone into chasing the wake-lock bugs down on many many many devices....in roms, in kernels in conflicting apps. For years. Sometimes its simple, sometimes it's given up on completely.

Thanks for all the responses. My past Android phones (Evo and Evo 3D) didn't have any delay whatsoever, which is the origin of the original post. The power of the Galaxy S2 phones is pretty much legendary, which is why I'm surprised about this power saving feature. Reviews boast quick boot times, but I would argue that a regular wake time is much more useful and realistic to have. I do understand the basic premise that a powerful phone consumes more battery, but that didn't make any other dual core phone I've seen require this precaution.
Therefore, why is it that others forego this feature if it ultimately saves so much battery that Samsung has made it a default feature on their latest phones?
Updated the OP with a video. Please view and tell me if this is the norm.
I watched the video, mine is not that slow delay.

Funny how mine has all my apps on it... (over 40) and a **** load of music... And for the life of me I cant get it go lag like that.... I had a refurbished evo 3d that did that... I called sprint.after factory reset and.a few battery pulls... Id just return it.
roms dont fix all bugs let alone one random wake lag problem and the op may have to deal with it as most of us dont have lag like that...
@op if you got it from a store id bring it in.... if a rep says its suppose to do that.... Tell them your older android phone didnt do it... Then ask to speak to a manager
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Yeah... I had a feeling it was worse than it should have been. Though it's true a custom ROM could fix it, it would probably implement a fix similar to Soft Locker (which is obviously shunned for its battery draining ability). Also, I'd much rather have a device in proper working order to begin with. The Best Buy I got it from only had 2 on launch day, so here's hoping I find one that has it in stock.
Thanks for all the replies.

Does your phone have a delay when turning the display on?

I noticed that there would sometimes (50% chance) that there will be a noticeable 1 second delay when pushing the power button and when the display actually turns on. It's annoying because sometimes i'll want to check the time, and i'll push the button as i'm taking it out of my pocket only to be met with a black display still.
i tried turning off the pattern lock thinkng that was it but still having the same problem.
i'm completely stock.
No delay here...when I press the power button, my display comes on instantly.

Its obvious why the delay doesn't bother you; you already have too much time on your hands.
Otherwise, it's an obvious flaw in the phone. Why don't you let other people worry about their own lives and how many seconds are wasted.

yes its terrible anyone have a fix to this yet
If it's because of the SD card, trying increasing the SD Card Read Ahead Buffer. It can be built into the kernel or changed with a few market apps, or even a script. It'll also make photos/videos/anything from the SD card load faster.

Isn't this forum built for people who want to get the most of their devices? If everyone just decided things were 'good enough' you wouldn't have devs here writing custom kernels and ROMs. If the issue doesn't bother you then don't bother posting in the thread. And if you absolutely must, don't be a douche about it.
OT: I noticed it too. This is my first smartphone, but it stood out. I assumed it was normal. It's not huge, but I definitely wouldn't mind a fix that didn't require abandoning my SD card.

It's not a HUGE issue, but it is something that should be fixed.
In fact, just to move things forward, I tried increasing the SD Read Ahead Buffer with an app "SD Card Booster" or some name like that, which doesn't decrease the speed of the screen coming on, but does drastically cause photos and other things to load faster when you, say, open the Gallery. That was expected though. We used to increase it on the OG Evo.
Ive owned a few smartphones noticed ET lag after 3rd wake up.
First thing I thought of was Sprint Blackberry curve 8330-M.

Hi everyone,

4.01
I've only unlocked it, haven't done anything else.
I was only replying to a text message and in the middle of text, GN froze and the screen went black with a white line across top of screen.
Seemed to occur while the auto-rotate function was trying to rotate screen.
I also noticed the auto rotate on my GN does not work well at all. Sometimes it does, sometimes it will not no matter how long I wait.
Nothing worked, had to pull battery.
Seems fine after replacing battery.
I wouldn't be concerned but for the fact that I was not using 3rd party apps or a different rom. The force 2d option is off.
Is maybe something funky with the GN auto-rotate feature in 4.01?

Yes, versions 4.0.2 and 4.0.3 fix a LOT of little issues with the GN. They really should've released the phone with one of those 2 versions rather than 4.0.1.
I don't think you should be too worried about battery pulls unless they happen more often than you like.
Just like a computer...rebooting or pulling the battery at least once a week is recommended!

I have servers and clients that have uptimes of 1 year+ before an update requires me to down a server or re-image a client.
In my case, if what had happened to my NEW GN happened on one of my OES2 Linux servers, Id be scrambling until the issue was found and fixed and i'd be none to happy.
But alas, a server is not a cell phone.

One very simple reason: If you pull the battery in a bad moment, e.g. right when the hardware is writing something to the Flash memory, you might (soft-) brick your phone and lose all the data on it.

Well because,
If I have to keep pulling the battery (which is NOT occurring thankfully so far) then I would say something is wrong and its not just a software bug. I would call it a blue screen of death in computer terms.
That could be anything from a hardware fault (Memory/CPU/IO sub system..etc) That would for me, mean taking it back.
A hard reset may temporarily fix the issue. But it doesn't solve the underlying problems.
I'm hoping the error was a one off. If it never occurs again, then we're good to go.
If it does, its goin back.

Sometimes its quick, less than a second, sometimes it doesn't move at all.....
Then, a hard lock.

Pulling the battery is always a last resort. If the phone is frozen, that is fine to pull the battery or you can hold power on the phone and it'll turn off by itself (not sure if this is in the GN but it was in Galaxy S1).

You are correct. Its not a common everyday thing for most.
I was just suggesting a legit reason for why anyone would need to pull a computer battery.
On another note, i agree with you that having an otterbox case makes it even more of a pain to have to pull the battery.
I just had another freeze up while trying to get back to the main page using the launcher.
Im getting worried now. I've had this phone for 2 weeks and it was great until today....
I think I'm gonna bring it back to virgin just to be safe before my 30 days is up.
If its just software then the new one will do it as well but at at least I'll know thats what it is and either wait for samsung updates or update manually.
Again....nowhere in my response did I say u HAVE to pull the battery every week....I simply said its best if u do, nobody is gonna force u to! But when u do get a bug...pull that battery, and if it keeps happening, send it for warranty...simple

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Screen Sensitivity

So I'm sure SOME of you must have noticed that the Galaxy Nexus screen isn't as sensitive as.. lets say Nexus S or S2.
If you check, the pressure required to get a touch registered is around 0.30. This value is much lower on other phones (like about 0.15 on Nexus S).
There were apps for Galaxy S that fixed screen sensitivity issues.. What I'm wondering is, is there any such app for the Galaxy Nexus?
Well yes, check out my thread about it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576739&goto=newpost
However I'm fine with 0.30, I can get to 0.28 even. But there is a bug after a few minuted of use it decreases and stops detecting values below 0.40. Locking the screen temporarily resets it. Someone should dig tgru the kernel code to see if we can change this.
Interesting. Maybe that's why I miss keys while typing. Seemed my G2x was great in this regard.

I think this is a very hard issue to diagnose. Must be some type of memory leak or something.
I have been noticing this more and more.. hope some dev figures out a way to up the sensitivity!
this mod will help with sensitivity, its made for the galaxy s but it works for the nexus. it can change the sensitivity, minimum motion and duration to register touch. you need root for this.
Anyone know where these settings are located so they can be change without the app?

I've don't know if I experience the same issues you guys talk about but sometimes I can't use the softkeys. Like they're unresponsive... I have to pick up me GN or wait for a good 4 to 6 seconds before it registers my touch. I have no idea if it's because of the touch issue you guys are talking about. But has anybody any idea what causes this or if I'm on a totally different issue here?

this mod will help with sensitivity, its made for the galaxy s but it works for the nexus. it can change the sensitivity, minimum motion and duration to register touch. you need root for this.
Anyone know where these settings are located so they can be change without the app?

Placebo it is.
It doesn't work for the GNexus, though it DOES work for the Nexus S (reviews).
I wish someone would fix this :s
How light are you guys pressing the screen?
I have a clear coat shield on and Im typing this post as light as possible and don't seem to have a problem at all.

Its weird how none of the developers have paid attention to this. These sensitivity values should be fixable by them no? It would be great if someone can pay attention to this.

Because we don't see the issue?

My phone responds to the touch of the skin on my leg, through my jeans pocket.

I'm pressing the screen EXTREMELY light, like barely touch inputs. When I do fast typing the finger tips kinda fly around on each letter.
It works fine and just as accurate as normal. Then the bug kicks in and the sensitivity reduces and suddenly misses about 50% of the presses. It feels mushy. Lock the screen and it fixes it back to normal. It must be some memory leak type issue.
How do you know it isn't a memory leak with an installed application?

are you saying your gnex have not this issue?
please can you make a test?
go to dev setting and enable 'pointer location'; on up/dx of the screen you have 'prs' ... pressure of every your touch... try to register a touch at 0.30 or less pressure.... it's not possible, i think 0.27/0.28 is the limit... lighter touch don't register (gs2 or NS register this kind of touch)
Exactly, 0.28 is the best I can register. When the bug kicks in, suddenly you can't register below 0.40 or 0.45, no matter how much you try. Lock the screen and it fixes itself. So frustrating.
Lowest I got was 0.27 after playing with it for a minute or so. Anyways, I don't really notice a difference coming from an LG G2x. I guess there is, but I'm assuming I always press hard enough that I don't notice.
As to the other bug of not registering under .40 or higher, never had it. Running AOKP 37 + Franco M3 if that makes a difference.
I've the same problem with my 24h new Nexus are there devices without this bug ?
Inviato dal mio Galaxy Nexus con Tapatalk 2
I am having this exact same issue. Upon initial unlocking the deice registers key presses smoothly and will continue to do so until a lull of interaction. One the device is inactive but the screen remains on the screen comes highly unresponsive. I would say that those who are not experiencing on their stock devices probably have their screen lockout time low enough that the bug does not have time to appear prior to the phone requiring it be unlocked anew.
I have a 32 GiB Stock Nexus 7 running 4.1.1 Build JRO03D.
My screen timeout is set to 10 minutes.

Possible recent apps lag fix.

One thing I noticed with my phone that was laggy was the recent apps button. I fixed it by running art in developers option. Let it restart and let it do its android is upgrading apps. Once it does that let it boot up. Go back to developers option and change back to dalvic. Then it will restart and boot up again. After that check your recent apps button to see if it's quicker with no delay. Worked for me so let me know if it works for you.

No change for me after doing that.

work for me
I only have about a half second delay from hitting the button until it shows up on screen. Is that really a problem? Lmao

It has been repeatedly posted by different users and on the other note forums as an issue for some. There's a post sonewhere on this forum claiming Samsung acknowledged the delay. A 1-2 second delay is annoying and unnecessary on a new flagship phone. Regardless it worked for me.

Don't have a delay anymore after doing this.

I noticed this when I switched back to dalvic so that I can access my private mode files (doesnt work on art!). My device was faster overall on art and I can't wait for android L so I can use art exclusively.

Yes, I was agreeing with you. Tried it and while the recent button was even faster on art, switching back to dalvic has definitely made a difference for me. Thank you for the tip.

Well, I'm glad it worked for you. Seriously.
Honestly though, if anyone is legitimately annoyed over a second or two delay, then your lives must be perfect in every other conceivable way. Sure, it's 2014, and I get it, but c'mon. A 1-2 second delay is nothing.
Took like 25 mins to change over to ART but this worked for me, thanks. The delay was annoying even in my far from perfect life.
I tried this and didn't see much difference between ART and dalvik. There was a lot more lag on ART for me and the recent apps still had a delay.

Did nothing for me but worth a try
While I currently only have about a 1/2 second delay, I wonder if it will slowly creep back to being slow over time.
Also, how does it calculate what is recent? Is it a set time period or just a list of the last X apps used?
Likely last used. That's what it seems anyway

I have the Canadian rogers version and those steps did not work for me. Cannot wait for Android L update come Sammy push the update.
I have not had any lag with this button since the day I got it. A friend of mine who is on Sprint has a delay. Annoying? Yeah maybe a little but if your schedule is so tight that a 1 second delay is going to cause mass chaos, you really need to look at your schedule and your priorities.

:silly:
too bad there's no smiley for rolling my eyes... when someone upgrades to a new phone, you'd expect it to be faster. 1-2s isn't that bad "in the grand scheme" as you and a couple others illogically point out. the difference is pressing this button more than 10-20x a day, it starts to make you wonder what's wrong with this phone.
lastly, it's sad that you felt compelled to come into a thread and throw your judgement around on other people's lives. i could say i feel sorry for you that your life is so slow and lackadaisical that you're able to easy tolerate delays throughout your day. but i wouldn't do that.
onwards and upwards on your slow climb to nowhere :highfive:

AGREED. I was searching for this exact problem when I found this thread. I only bought a Note 4 because I broke my Note 2, my thoughts were 'Well, I guess i'll have a faster phone?' even If its 700$... imagine my dismay to find the phone SLOWER than my previous one. my life is far from perfect, which is why spending an extra 400-500 for a note 4 over a note 2 means I expect speed. and you know this, maaaaaaaaan.
After disabling multi window the lag is almost gone. I think the lag is due to figuring out wich of the recent apps suport multi window. it's definitely a software optimisation issue as the galaxy s6 doesn't have this problem and it also supports multi window. I don't know if it is as complex as the multi window of the note 4. Try it and tell me if this helped. Sorry if this has already been posted, but honestly I didn't read all the posts in this thread
art question
Where is the art setting in developers mode? I looked over every button and can't find it.
