Ziggy to get some stiff competition soon - Windows Phone 7 General

Meet Cora !

Competition is good. I hope he doesn't end up using that annoying siri sound though. I hate that sound.
I'm curious to see how much MS beefs up the built in tellme service with Apollo mostly though.

Microsoft admit the nodo update hasnt been smooth

From: http://www.winrumors.com/microsoft-...itterwp&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitter
“Many of you are making critical comments here which are certainly fair. First, I was wrong when I said “most people have received the February update.” There are many of you who have yet to receive it, and I don’t blame you for speaking up and pointing out my mistake. Second, I referred to our updates as “complete” because I was thinking of the internal process where we pass completed software to another group who delivers them – but of course no update is complete until you all have it. Plus, at the time I did the interview we had started the NoDo (“march update”) delivery process and I knew “it was going well” from our perspective: people were officially getting it, the success rate of its deployment on real-world phones was looking good, and we were happy that the process had STARTED well. Still—these are NOT the same as all of you getting it and I’m sorry that I came across as insensitive to that fact.
I am a very, very big advocate for all our end-users and developers, and it bothers me a lot if I sounded out of touch. I wasn’t as prepared for this interview as I should have been—I walked into the studio with an informal state of mind, thinking about MIX and what we WILL be talking about, and I didn’t have the right up-to-date information to give a good explanation on updates which I know to be a very high-interest topic right now.
I have read all of the comments here (and many of them on the other blogs) and so has pretty much everyone in our management team. We know it’s been frustrating to wait for features/fixes and (probably worse) to hear little from us on specific dates. We are sorry the process has been rocky. The “where’s my phone update” table is our first step to try to remedy this in the face of technical problems that have made our first wave of updates take longer than we expected. We know the table would benefit greatly from more detail, and we are hoping to add more to it by working with the Operators who own the “testing” phase to get more clarity. If your phone is shown in “scheduling”, it’ll be worth checking the table next week.
In the spirit of “MIX as a conversation” – I will make sure that when I show up in Vegas that I’m well prepared to give an update in person and to try to answer your questions as best I can. You folks are obviously a very important audience for us and it’s right for you to expect us to communicate and execute better. I know at this point it’s our actions that matter… The main thing we are trying to do is to get the updates out to everyone in a way that is reliable and works, and then make our process better and more transparent in the future.”

let's be real. I wasn't mad, but is this enough to shut the burn microsoft to the ground crowd away? I'm not sure...
Transparency is always better than non transparency.
It's really, really nice to hear that they know they have made it wrong. I love it. Everybody does.
But it would be better to hear that the update is going right, and we gonna receive it in the next few days.

I cannot accept it. My HD7 is non-brand and doesn't receive the NoDo update til now.
I don't rally care about excuses, and I am still pissed, and I have still not got the NoDo. However, I give MS some credit, since at least they show their customers they care by making statements like this, and admit everything is not always sunshine and cloudless skies. Compared to Crapple (Apple), who always denies- or don't say a word to their "customers" that they actually do **** up sometimes.
And that Joe Belfiore I really like, he seems to be the perfect guy as Director of Windows Phone 7. And he's funny to.

Whatever Crapple says they deliver which is exactly why they are kicking everyone's ass whether you hate to admit it or are totally in denial. You give MS credit because they finally admitted after being cornered by WP7 users and had no way out BUT to admit it. It's like saying well let the bank robber go free because he at least admitted his crime. So you like Belfiore because he is funny and can entertain you? WOW!! Maybe MS should hire Jerry Seinfeld or (choose your favorite comedian) to be the Director of WP7. It's become a joke anyway so might as well hire comedians!
I respect Joe Belfiore for admitting his/Microsoft's mistake. But as that as for Eric Hautala, he is a complete joke.
Look at all the complains ppl have made over at Windows Phone Blog, hundreds after hundreds and he doesn't even stands up to say a single word.
What kind on a General Manager, Customer Experience Engineering is he???

Well yes, Apple deliver updates flawlessly. However, they totally deny any design flaws of their hardware in their products - witch cannot be fixed with software. The iPhone 3G/S, cracks everywhere on the plastic backside and it got tons of dust under the screen. Also, the Macbook cracks. The Iphone 4 antenna design flaw - very well known but Apple denies there is anything wrong. Their response is simply "don't hold it that way" and a short while after, they kick the responsible person for the antenna design out of the company, lol. I guess the guys at Apple is the real comedians.

People seem to forget that Apple had growing pains with iOS as well and had major issues when they first started to push out version 3. When it all happened they just shrugged and kept quiet. At least MS acknowledges it, this is a step int eh right direction. Now they just need to move fast and fix it all or quit telling people when something is coming out.

Yeah, even Apple make mistakes. And they don't admit. There is a lot of examples of that. Still, sooner or later, they fix it. And most of the time, sooner. And when they say that they have an update, well, I envy that, everyone is able to download and update their iPhones when they want, not when carrier want, or when it is available for you.
And yes, I didn't forget that Apple just handle one phone. With just one single phone they choose the way of the whole smartphone market. And they are good at that.
Let's not forget that they learn with their mistakes. And it is really nice.
Apple was able to release iOS update before schedule and a patch shortly after all through the same carrier that Microsoft has problem to push through, AT&T.
In my book, Microsoft dropped the ball big time. And they still have no clue how to fix this. Sorry to say, at this time Microsoft lost all the credibility to me for their ability to successfully push the WP7 platform forward. Yes, WP7 will still survive - in the form of millions of cheap, low end, low resolution Nokia phones that most of us simply don't care about.
I'd love to see MS show me otherwise. But I doubt it. Big corporations don't turn around quickly unless they have a strong leader. Steve B is simply a corporate bean counter, not a leader.

They don't care. They just could not talk their way out of it. If they could, they would.
Apple supports their products, so I can give a flying crap what they say. I don't care what a company says, I care what they actually do.

WP7 has poor reception issues, which is worse than Antennagate because for an iPhone all you needed was a bumper or a case. You can't fix the poor reception in WP7 devices so easily.
I routinely get 3 bars in an HSPA+ market where my Vibrant has 5 bars and a 3.3+ mbps download speed. Call quality is noticeably worse (not even comparable, TBQH) and download speeds are much slower. I know one other person with an HD7 and he said "the phone is okay, but the call quality is ****."
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...ng-focus/5b7bc221-2982-4813-95f1-a8c88bfd2e86
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...software/cf6cb222-7fe7-4c0c-92c0-357bf4cc44d1
Also, the HD7 exibits the same issue as the iPhone 4, except it has poorer reception/signal quality overall:
http://www.gsmdome.com/htc/htc-hd7-antenna-problems-explained-by-companys-spokesman_20065
Focus, Omnia 7, HD7 (I experience the bad signal quality personally). I'm willing to bet the issue is Microsoft's coding, and not the hardware. WP7 makes a worse phone than the iPhone, and a worse Smartphone than pretty much anything barring some feature phones.
Dunno where the Apple hate is coming form, but clearly some people only count the negatives of the platforms they don't like. Microsoft's handling of WP7 is making Apple look like a champ.

Maybe if you learned how to write cohesive and comprehensible statements I'd be able to answer that.
You're not from out of the country, so there's no excuse for your inability to do so...

Well done, MS

MS came through on the usability and quality of WP7 at last. The NoDo update made my Samsung Focus the supreme phone in my collection. Yeah, yeah...I know WP7 still lacks the usual features. But I'm loving the experience with my Focus so much I really don't miss them. It helps to have other phones that have those missing features
The Focus is supreme and WP7 is now supreme. They are both working pretty much flawlessly. The market loads and scrolls effortlessly now. I think it's even better than the Android market for functionality. It does quite often put me back at the top of a category after I install an app, though. But it is most certainly free of the frustration inducing loading and scroll-freezing. And I have yet to experience a market freeze-up.
I must agree, while it is missing some small feature atm. What it does, it does very well. Now that I got full GPS, only real thing I need is for Adobe to finally make Flash support & full Multitasking that's in Mango when it comes. Just wish that update wasn't so far away.

Not really. I got the NoDo/firmware update as soon as it was released. I've just been using my phone long enough to appraise it as what I described. I have had the habit of speaking a bit too soon about something and then it falls apart. Not so with WP7 this time around.
Only 2 things I miss would be sending/uploading a vid& flash support....Still like it better than my EVO 4G

Additional features are coming, and with Mango, the response/load time ect of all applications will be even higher as was shown during MIX11.

I agree wholeheartedly in all aspects but one (and it really has nothing to do with MS, but the Focus). Samsung is BY FAR the most pathetic hardware manufacturer in the WP7 game with respect to creating useful value-added apps for their marketplace. And even when the DO come with something good, they pull it a month later.
Look at the amazing apps that HTC (YouTube, etc) and LG (Pano camera add-on, voice-to-text, etc) have produced, and then look at the chaff in the Samsung Zone. There is no comparison.

Completely agree. Post-Nodo I'm really enjoying the experience - the phone was good but now it's great.
The only things I am personally missing from my old iPhone 4 are psuedo-multitasking and good IM clients. Otherwise the experience with WP7 / Xbox / Zune Pass is fantastic
I am also happy with my WP7 experience. But c&p phone numbers would be lovly, as well internet speed up on my Omnia 7. Its redicilous slow atm. Flash or decent you tube app and flashlight would also make my day. Wish MS could include a flashlight as standard, really annoying.

There are several YouTube apps to choose from. I for one use Lazytube, which is really great imho. You can also find loads of flashlights on the marketplace. Don't know whether they use the LEDs or not, since I have an HD7 with HTC flashlight and thus have no need for any 3rd party app.
I also feel the same after nodo. initially i thought MS fooled me thrice but now feels like i am loving the uniqueness of it. Sure it is new OS so need to give it time after all. Hope MS do not drop the ball.

To be honest I think they will be pulling out all the stops to ensure they release mango by end of October or early November.
1. To introduce new handsets for the Christmas period with the brand spanking new OS.
2. Because of iOS 5 looming on the horizon.
3. To keep a consistent timeline going like Apple. Launch was November.
And if they are not then this will be a failure for them. Nokia also should be trying at all costs to push out a Windows Phone for fall too.
i agree with OP.... MS did it this time with the mobile OS...
i am wating for 2 things 1st MANGO, 2nd is Nokia hardware...

Awfully quet here

Maybe a god side or not? =) Maybe WP7 is so good XDA dont haver the same relevance, maybe there isnt any users left?
.... hey, thats a lot of maybe´s =)
Really there's nothing to talk about until Mango and the new devices that will bring. Everything has been said already, the same arguments have exploded again and again. It's just a waiting game now.
I used to be more active in the Captivate section ... But it was because there was always the hope that something would come out that would fix the lag, GPS etc. Fortunately with my Focus, everything just works. It's kinda nice haha.
Yep. Patiently waiting for Mango.
Nice to not be alone being satisfied with WP7. I am only waiting for my carrier contract to end so i can switch and let the call issuess drop. I love my Omnia 7, i really do, its the best phone i have to date (Used HD2 and was happy then). But the Edge problem with Samsung Phones in generall is a annoyence.
Still i come here to hope for some small things. I still want my flashligt 8Camera led) app like HTC without hacking.
Used to hack phones a lot before, but with WP7 it´s not that importent.

I wholeheartedly agree WP7 does almost everything I need my smartphone to do but it will not play audio books. I have them on my phone but I cannot save my spot. It treats an audio book like a mp3. I tried treating it as a podcast but Zune then fails to see it. I am stuck using my damn Nano.
This is a big missing item for me. Combine that with the lack of vendor support and I am getting frustrated. No audible application. No HBOGo application. No LogMeIn ignition. I even boycotted audible and told them they lost a customer of over 5 years until they step up and get my my WP7 app. No luck so far...
It seems WP7 is still not considered a player and that is very frustrating because overall this phone rocks!

I won't give up hope that there'll be an update through Zune or some sort of ROM for officially developer unlocked devices. If not, heck, I'll have to wait for the official release. Either way, I'm looking forward to it.

Yes, the naysayers, doom sayers "it's not my old WM6.5 whiners" and "WP7 is a fail" sayers are gone. I really miss the latter, they were comic abusers of the English language. I challenged all of them to return after Mango and apologize for wasting space here and wasting our time with their frustrated, comical rants. They are gone because the news is universally good relative to WP7. Aquisitions, alliances, features etc. have all been good and in fact, much better than any of us had dreamed. It will turn out that WP7 is an OS and UI to reckon with. I am very pleased with my Focus and was one of those WM 6.5 tweakers and flashers who initially thought I missed all of that wasted time spent waiting for a new ROM to flash. No need anymore and don't want to be there ever again.

You may want to look at Overdrive. It's Audio books from your library. I just installed it yesterday and looking for my library card to check out my first Audio book.
Thanks Guys.
Unfortunately Audiobookmark and Overdrive both only support mp3 formats.
Although I am glad to see Overdrive is now available - it is still not really useful until they implement WMA support. Almost all the audiobooks I checked out and are interested in are in WMA format, aaaaaaargh.
I did find a very kludgey workaround. I load the book onto my iPod. I then pull it off using iDump which gets it on my computer in a m4b format. I change the file tag genre to "Podcast" and then add it into Zune.
That finally gave me the ability to listen to my audiobooks as podcasts which allows me to use bookmarks in an audiobook checked out from Overdrive. A bit of work. Not sure if it is worth it to not use my old iPod.
Its quiet because there is literally nothing going on with WP7 right now. Nothing.
Until mango. When it gets here, there will be a burst of threads and new arguments.

Well currently there is absolutely nothing to talk about isn't it? It's still the same crippled OS with no Marketplace for most countries, no native letters and proper maps for most either, until Mango comes this fall - easily 4 months away. Plus not even one more new phone since launch. No customizations either. So what to talk about?
The user base here is pretty much limited to people who just "patiently wait" for upgrade. Those who didn't want to compromise their usage already switched to something else.
I am really curious what will be WP7 situation after Mango with unstoppable wave of Android and new iPhone. Really really curious how Nokia/WP7 will appear because honestly all other OEMs didn't REALLY meet my expectations.
So summing this up: exiting times ARE ABOUT to come, so it's hard to repeat endlessly future plans here.

why do people think siri is cool? its talking to a machine!
generation of mobile phone using assholes.
1. first mobile phone users with large handsets out in public
2. people wearing a suit walking around talking loudly into their handset all the time
3. business people adopting this more by carrying around a briefcase with nokia ringtone
4. use of bluetooth headsets, business people talking loudly in public but actually speaking on the phone as if they are SOOO important they need to talk whilst shopping
5. Siri comes along replacing the need for someone to actually talk to whilst you look like a **** walking around with your bluetooth headset in talking to your phone and getting updates on weather and calendar notifications....
Siri just seems so stupid and dumb to me, mobile phones should be personal rather then broadcasted telling your phone what to text or email...
am i the only one who thinks this?
Speak to it works ok, still kinda weak... For example I tell it to text bob what's up, and it writes bob what's up versus google built in would choose bob as the contact. Speak to it wants you to manually select the contact and hit send. So basically it just translated your speech, not very smart. But it is in beta! Has lots of potential especially the personality it has, but it needs more integration, automation, and maybe different voices. Plus a way to activate it without bringing up the app our widget and hitting the mic button.

yeah, it would really need to be integrated into the OS really to work as well as apple's does. but again... like most apple stuff, its gimmicky and worthless to most.
to be fair, it did play with they for an hour last night. its okay maybe if youre driving but really other than that.... stupid.
I'm using Voice Actions, I find it to be somewhat useful. Its like having another shortcut to get things opened and done. I installed a Loquendo voice so that it sounds better.

Completely agree. I foresee Apple starting a whole new wave of people yelling at their phones (not talking to a person over the phone, but talking TO the phone) in libraries, at the movies, and other places where they should otherwise keep their mouths shut.
'Uhhh, look at meeee! Imz soo sexi wit ma nuu iPhony-speakin app!'
I've tried Iris but i'm not really sastisfied with this app
Siri like apps are a nice feature but nobody needs them and I would never pay for such an app.
the problem is that "apple" now seems to be cool when really at least imo apple always seem to be a bit.... unfinished.
as a pc user mainly i find apple products very unnatural and bulky. I own a ipod touch and i want the music on my ipod to look identical to what it does on itunes, why is that so difficult for you itunes? its little things like this that make apple not worth bothering...
back to the subject, because "apple" is "cool" it means the majority of the blind dumb sided public just inject what ever gimmick that apple throws at them directly into their veins. When using an iphone i never once thought..."you know what the problem is here... i cant put a notification in my diary about when i want to eat dinner with my mum... i wish my phone knew who my mum was so i could ask to call mum and it will dial her" i usually think of issues like "why is their camera so bad in day light, i dont want to take better quality night photos thats like giving me a nice smelling **** to hold... no matter what it smells like i dont want to hold the thing! Besides why doesnt my ipod tunes look EXACTYLY LIKE IT DOES ON ITUNES!"
what about... why cant i see some simple things on my home screen like unread emails or weather widgets? and as a user of the ipod i feel treated like a brick... once i take the ipod out of its box im very restricted with what i can do, there are no customisation options that are of any intrest

Why did this post get soooooooooooo far away from the original question? Not a lot of help here for the person who posted. I too am somewhat interested in an app like this for my own reasons but I don't feel it deserves other folks telling me why I shouldn't want/need an app like this. This is a great website with a lot of great, helpful folks who I very much appreciate so, does anyone have anything "constructive" to add as a response to the original question?
I just use the built-in Voice Search. Does a majority of what Siri does, and has the advantage of having been out significantly longer. Amusing to use 'navigate to' or 'listen to' and have an iDrone comment on how fast Google 'stole' Siri.
Voice Actions is OK, and Jeannie is decent aside from a HUGE amount of spin-up time and a tendency to take over for the A2DP 'play' function.
Been a while, and I'm sure a few updates to the app since this thread started but Speak To It is pretty good.
Our G2s have the search button on the buttom right of the screen; this button can be set up to access the app, so no need to have the widget up or start the app.
When you access the app via the search button , its more Siri -like as in you don't see the Avatar but the app otherwise works as it normally does
I love how it gives you witty responses too like if you ask it does it smoke or if it's in love for example LOL

You should see the comments on the verge massive explode over it
First time I have heard his voice.
I never really understand how Android got so popular in first place...
Interesting read... his comments were edited by staff "to better reflect his views", then he goes on to say the iphone is still his favorite:

Wrong. iPhone is my favorite phone. I did give my opinion that the Windows 7P phone had superior visual appearance and operation cues that were also more attractive. In my opinion, it sets the mark for user interface. I would recommend it over my Android phones given that it doesn’t yet have the breadth of apps. I surmise that Microsoft hired someone from Apple and put money into having a role in the UI and appearance of some key apps. I also surmised that Steve Jobs might have been reincarnated at MS due to a lot of what I see and feel with this phone making me think of a lot of great Apple things.

Woz is awesome, but that is a grade A douchebag quote.
It's better than an iPhone, so he says "DURR must have hired an apple perthon"
I believe there might be more to it!

That is the way the world moves
In the 80s Beta system was much better thant VHS, but at the end Beta disappeared.
My friends only whant a Samsung Galaxy or and iPhone, they have never read specs of any other phone HTC, LG, etc...
The people that buy phones does not enter this forum, nor uses many time playing with the phone. The just want to show to other people they new phone.
It is very difficult to came LATE to the market, event with a better product.
When iPhone came, it came with a very different a new product. Windows Phone might be much better but it is not enough different.
Its Woz he likes everything, just like me. Is that wrong?
