in ICS, is there a way to turn off what was formally known as Background Data ?

settings-accounts and sync-click on an account and uncheck the things you don't need.
Go into your data usage chart, then hit the menu key, and select the disable background data option.
I believe those are the instructions you're looking for.

it might be. but, prior to ICS you could turn of 'background data' and things like market wouldnt run or google voice etc. ive tried your suggestion and both gvoice and market still run. like before if i had background data off and i tried to use the market it wouldnt allow me unless i turned it on. this was very helpful in saving battery life. ive been all thru the settings, im thinking ics doesnt have this option
Go into data usage then menu button tick restrict background data this disables play like gingerbread did
Darren
guys this wont work on a wifi only tablets?
it seems the menu option in data usage is not there?

In ICS, it applies only to cellular data connection and not wifi - even on a phone.

This wont work because you have to set a limit data usage and I not so sure of the side effects of that.
If you set a limit of 0KB, is it equivalent to turning it off?

I just rooted my phone mostly for the WiFi but it's doing something a little strange now. Whenever I turn on the Wireless Tether app it shows multiple access points coming from my phone, 5 to be exact. Is there something I'm missing, a way to clear the unwanted names?
Have a screenshot?

Yep, here's what my wireless connections pop up as when I turn on the "Wireless Tether" app.
Note: The Top "Walker" is my home network and the rest are all generated by the phone.
Try reseeting the app and then try activating wpa.Tht way only authorized users can access ur wifi

I've done that but I still have 5 seperate access points being sent out from my phone. I can't seem to change any of the setting for 4 of them.
anyone have any ideas?
same here
You are not alone.
I used os monitor to see 5 occurrences of internet active - sometimes more.
They won't kill and effect memory terribly. Sometimes a reboot is required, however, the internet occurences are still there. The reboot only clears some memory to allow evo to run fast again.
I have no idea how to fix.
By the way, what app did you use to see those occurances. I'd like to check it out.
Thanks.

Sorry for the confusion that is actually a screen shot of my desktop to show multiple access points being listed. I wish there was an app that looked like that to show available wifi.
You get non of those (in your screen shot) when your phone is off?
It's a wildcard, but possible your neighbors have evo's too and running the tether software...

Negative, I can visibly watch them pop up when I turn the tether on and they go away as soon as i turn it off. It also seemed that when I tried to rename one instead of renaming one of them, it would make another access point. Very peculiar.
FWIW...I switched to CM6 and it's all cleared up.
Yea I was gonna say, that's your computer if you change the name and your computer keeps the old ones and adds the new one. My laptop does that too but I can remove them individually.
Just wondering if CM7 comes with a data counter to keep an eye on mobile data (3G etc) usage.
I've had a good look through all the CM7 settings but can't find one
I have my connection pretty well controlled via Droidwall so only have gmail, contacts & calendar allowed to have access to 3G data so I'm not going to use much data but a counter may be of use if there's a good one available.
Can anyone suggest a good data counter from the market.
Thanks
3g watchdog, never had any issues with it, the pro version can even count data in blocks if you're data plan is based on it, so i highly recommend this app.
Have you checked the market?

Yes I've had a quick look but there's quite a few to choose from so was after some recommendations from XDA members for CM7 really.
I have t-moble, downloaded app directly from market to oversee my data usage.

Just tried 3G Watchdog & it seems to be quite a decent app - shows details in the notification bar so easy to view.
Will probably stick with this when I start getting charged for mobile data
I use the "NetCounter",it's the most light-weight app for data counter.

how do you access droidwall and set it to only allow certain apps to access 3g data?

Download Droidwall from the market.
Load it & grant it Root access.
In the Droidwall menu enable firewall & enable log.
Droidwall will show a list of all apps/programmes that request wifi/3G access with a "checkmark" box next to each.
You can then check which apps you want to access wifi or 3G or both.
Go into the Droidwall menu & click "apply rules".
At the top of the screen there's an option to have it in whitelist mode (only allows access to whichever you have put the checkmark against) or blacklist mode (won't allow access to those apps that you have put a checkmark against).
I use it in whitelist mode.
Important to say if you download a new app after installing Droidwall then you have to go back in & allow it access.
There's also a log button in the menu so you can see which apps are getting blocked.
Thanks for tips. Works like a charm, but gotta slowly add the apps into the list

Some apps may also need other programmes adding to the list for example youtube may also need media server adding for it to work. In that case I use the log feature of Droidwall to show what it blocked.

The new 4.0 (FF18) update missing background data off/on option...
The background data on/off has been removed from the settings/account and sync menu.
Any work around it?

Data Usage Menu has a preferences that allows to restrict background data. Or just turn data usage off which shuts off 3g

That's the Sprint Connection Optimizer turning your wifi on all the time. Just disable it in settings (not sure exactly where in settings, but it's definitely there, I'd assume in "more" under wireless settings).

Thanks for the clarification, Rocker of Dragons. I've been running AOSP Roms for so long I've forgotten where all of the settings are in stock TW.
And just a quick question: I noticed in your sig that you used Mskip's Toolkit when rooting. Did you have the same issues with Wifi being borked when you rooted it using the toolkit? I've stopped recommending it because of the issues people have has with it. I currently recommend Skunk Ape's guide, since it's easy to follow and walks you through each step with pictures and everything.
You can remove it via Titanium Backup, if you think its as useless as I do

Ok thanks for your help.

If your on a TW rom I recommend freezing it and not removing. Removing it has caused issues because it is linked to other tw based apps within the system.
On my two cents I love it I pick up wifi hot spots everywhere and the phone just connects automatically once you have already set it up. I go to Target I'm connected, I go to grocery store I'm connected, I go to mall I'm connected, I go to bookstore I'm connected, I go to Home Depot I'm connected, I go to Bahamas Breeze I'm connected... Lol see the advantages to using it.

See the attached screenshot - it says I used ~1.5G over the last 3 days (note: this is roughly consistent with Verizon's online data tracker, which shows ~1.43G used, so I DO think the data was actually used).
But when you add up all the apps it shows data used for, it only comes to a few hundred megabytes.
I tried moving the start date back a day and that didn't help.
That's a lot of data to use in 3 days (I'm usually on wifi most of the day), so I'm trying to figure out what used it. Perhaps a system app, but it looks like the data usage calculator includes them.
Any ideas? Thanks.
I accidentally posted this to the regular Note 10 forum before I noticed a separate Note 10+ forum - sorry!

Have you got "Download Booster" on in settings?
This uses a combination of data and wifi to download data faster than just plain wifi.
Not sure how that is counted...

Nope - I just double checked. I've never turned that on.

Only other thought is possibly spyware or malware that bypasses the counter...
Any suspect apps installed?

Not that I know of  I don't install many non-popular apps. The thought had definitely crossed my mind, but I can't think of anything, and it sounds others are having the same problem.
