[Q] Deleted apps - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I wanted to upgrade my rooted arc from .42 to .62 through OTA
but i read on the forums that you will need to re-flash with flash tool a .42 rom root if i have uninstalled system apps.
what does it mean by "uninstalled system apps"?
does it mean like deleting stuff with titanium back up?
or like replacing files (ex.adding notification widgets onto the status bar)

You can't do ota if you deleted system apps.
Thatswhy you need "like stock" before update.

system apps means any apps that you where unable to uninstall without root like timescape the sony launcher ETC...
Its best to flash a clean version of .42 root it then do the OTA to .62 then customize to your hearts content.
but be aware that the OTA to .62 seems to be picky and may still fail a couple of times on a clean .42 phone.

[Q] Possible to find 4.0.2.A.0.42 flashable via CWM?

I am not sure if my question will make much sense. I know how to flash official firmwares, and also how to flash custom ROMs via CWM.
I have been running 4.0.A.2.368 (UK Generic) for a while now, with [email protected] #3 kernel and of course root. I did this because for the time being I wanted an experience as close to the original as possible, but with added advantages.
I now want to update to 4.0.2.A.0.42, but without
a) Formatting my internal memory and thus losing my game installations and applications (a lot of which were purchased from the Store)
b) Losing root access
I know I am supposed to flash 4.0.2.A.0.42 via Flashtool, but I wonder if this will wipe the memory and thus cause me to lose above mentioned data.
Is there any way to update without losing my data, files, installed applications and games?
Many thanks for the help in advance.
You can flash via flashtool and still keep user data.
Also flashing new roms via CWM is not a good idea, there is no way atm to flash basebands (radio) via recovery so you would be stuck with older baseband.

Great! As about root.. Do I simply re-root the device?
I don't suppose I have to re-lock the bootloader to update via Flashtool, right?

Just make sure you untick the box that says "wipe user data". You can use flashtool with an unlocked bootloader. And as you have an unlocked bootloader, you can re-root by either flashing doomlords kernel, or by flashing the rootedupdate.zip in binarys CWM thread

[Q] To update or not to update

That's the question. I have an Arc S with .58 firmware (downgrade from .62 because I wanted to root). I tried to OTA but I wasn't able to, apparently beause I don't have a generic firmware.
1) Is it worth to downgrade to .42, root and then update to .62? I ask this because the ICS is rolling out. Will I be able to root OTA to ICS, though I've a rooted phone?
2) Is it possible to update my rooted phone to .62 with PCCompanion?
3) In any case of updating (via OTA or via PCCompanion) will I loose my sdcard data?
Addition: I've installed an app called CWM Auto Installer and made a Nandroid backup. After the update to .62 firmware will I be able to restore this backup and use it without any problems?

1. I say yes because you can have root access even though ICS is coming out. Also you can't update OTA to ICS, they're going to make you update to ICS through PC Companion
2. Yes, but if you update through PC Companion, you will lose root access.
3. No, it shouldn't affect your SD card data
4. I believe you can, but don't take my word for it.

additionally it is best if you put all apps that you moved to the sd card back to phone so that you can put them in sd after flashing to ICS

[Q] Update to .285 without loosing root?

Ok, so I updated from build 3.0.1.B.0.270 to 3.0.1.B.0.285 through pc companion and lost root access (which is unacceptable). So then I flashed back to .270 then rooted through flashtool then searched for an OTA for .285 (because I read on another thread that OTA was the only way to retain root on .285) but the search said "No Updates Found". Anyone have any idea why it wont find an update and if it is not possible to do it OTA then is there anyway (other than pc companion or flashing) that I can update to .285?
Xperia Play r800at
Just flash the 4.0.2.A.0.42 firmware with flashtool and then root it using the zergrush exploit, which is included already in flashtool. You can download the firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313505
So would that be exactly the same as the stock .285 build for the r800at?
No it is different. The ota to .285 is available. Just try it again and maybe give it sometime before trying the update again. Its how I got to .285 keeping root.

[Q] can i use rooted stock rom to update jb

i have stock rooted backup rom. i cant install jb update. is it becoz of rooted?? if yes how can i unroot?
Good question, i also would like to know this. im in ICS ARHD
Rooted doesn't matter. As long as it's a stock ROM for your CID, all you need to do is flash the stock RECOVERY and kernel and you're good to go.
As far as i know you need to unroot it too, its a system change that will not allow to update ......
But you could try....then we all know it for sure

Actually root doesn't matter in the matter of getting OTAs. Updating through OTA will just remove root, and you can just root it again after that. Same method with ICS

Same like mine. Can not upgrade without unrooting.
you have to Relock, flash the official ICS version then use auto upgrade to JB.
I have tried to root again the official JB using same method for ICS then bricked my phone. now have to use a cooked rom instead bcoz can not downgrade ro stock ICS

Cool, maybe this one is different then. When i wanted to update from 4.03 to 4.04 i had to remove root, it wouldn't update untill i did that......strange

Root .253 without losing settings

I got my C6506 yesterday and even though I had read some threads, I installed the .253 OTA before rooting. Once I had installed all my apps and had everything running I realized I need to root .434 and THEN upgrade to .253. Since I don't want to unlock my bootloader before backing up my TA, I guess I'm screwed and will have to set up everything again.
Sony's backup app is not letting me backup my apps, but I don't think it would be able to backup settings anyway, would it?

you may try the way I get updated to 253 OTA without losing root.
good luck
I did the something similar to you. I rooted 434 then updated to 253 and lost root.
I ended up downgrading to 434 using Flashtool. Then rooting 434 using the Bin4ry tool. Installed OTA Rootkeeper from Play store. Use OTA Rootkeeper to hide root. Applied 253 using OTA. Restore root using OTA Rootkeeper. The phone is now running 253 still rooted.
Then used Titanium Pro to delete user & system cache, and this seems to resolve the battery drain issue after 253 upgrade.
