Rooting, ROMs, etc. - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so before I get flamed for not reading anything and just asking questions, I'd like to put this out there that I do know what I'm talking about in terms of rooting, ROMs, flashing, recoveries, etc., but I'm not HTC literate, just Moto. I personally have a Droid 3, but I'm helping a friend root his D Inc and get a ROM flashed.
Anyways, please pardon my Moto slang and fill me in with the right terms. Thanks in advance here!
I know the D Inc is easily rootable. Is there a 1 click or does z4root work? I can use ADB, but for simplicity's sake, I like to keep it automated.
As for the bootloader, he's just an average user and has been using it stock for probably over a year now. Must I unlock it to flash a ROM (I know I don't on my D3, but our ROMs don't have kernels, so...) I'm assuming I need to. How would I go about doing that?
Once rooted (and unlocked?), can I install a ClockWorkMod-esque program to flash ROMs, or do I just use the stock Android recovery? Again, Moto and the bootloaders...
On this topic, do I just use a program similar to a Moto Bootstrapper to create Nandroid backups of the system and whatnot partitions as a recovery?
Is there an SBF (Moto term, way to flash stock software) so that a brick can be unbricked? I'm fully comfortable with a brick, I've done it MANY times to my D3 while flashing any assortment of things (most recently while patching a Bell Canada 2.3.6 build to a 2.3.4 VZW D3).
Finally, what ROM do you guys suggest? I'd like to keep it Sense'd because I don't think that slapping AOSP or some other launcher on there would be the best way to segue him into a rooted phone. Battery life is probably the main concern here.
Well, if you've made it this far without scolding my laziness (and desire to not fully grasp, I have a Moto phone and will be going to a Samsung one sooner rather than later hopefully), thank you for you time and suggestions. I'm hoping to get this all downloaded and set up over the next few days.
Thanks!

There is a 1 click method (unrevoked) if the phone is on android 2.2 froyo, but if its on 2.3.4, there is a little more technical steps involved to rooting and getting s-off.
Yes to flash a rom you must be rooted and s-of with a custom recovery, either clockwork or amon ra.
We dont call them sbf's we call them ruu's. They are PB32IMG.zip files flashed thru hboot, or exe files ran from a pc. They will get you back to stock.
I would go with my rom Touch Of Blue, or jermaines stock+ rom. They are mostly stock with fixes and enhancements.

first off welcome.
ok so there is no 1 click root per say, you will have to do a little bit of work. first what build do you have? gb or froyo:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306400
that thread will have a lot of helpful information.
as for SBF for htc is an RUU.exe that will bring you back if a soft brick is done. very simple to use.
save this site. it has everything you will ever need for the incredible. system wise that is.
http://pvillecomp.com/
that should get you started.

Slight amendment, it's: PB31IMG.zip

Thanks for the quick answers. I should've mentioned that it is on 2.3.4. I'll do some reading now that I've got some leads and will be back here for at least the next few days!

does rooting disable OTA updates?

I want to Root my Evo,but i have no idea if i will be able to get my gingerbread or even honeycomb OTA update.
i really dont know how to do manually updates,i dont know if its even hard to do.
What is a good/reliable team to get my rooting access from?
in Mind is the UnrEVOked team.
please give me your opinions to help me make the right decisions.
and threads or anything useful for me to have.
If you stay on the stock ROM you should still be able to get ota's but you might loose your root. The cooked ROMs will be updated usually before the official updates are even rolled out, and most likely tweaked and improved. I wouldn't even worry about sprints updates. As far as choosing a ROM, just read through the development forum and read what the ROM offers and the comments through the thread of users reporting bugs (if any) and opinions of performance. Baked snack, CM, and fresh seem to be the most popular and stable. Start with one of those. I used calkulin and frost, both work well too if you like vanilla Android, fresh was the only sense ROM I used and it was very nice. Its all about what look you want and customization. Thats the beauty of Android.
There are plenty of tutorials on the process, read the useful threads and links thread. Thats a good place to start. When ROMs get updated just flash over the previous unless the dev says a wipe is needed, which is rare.
I mean I love my sense. I can't go on without the beautiful widgets it comes with.
Plus the upgrade they're doing for sense is coming out soon.
But I need to know if a custom recovery is the same as a custom Rom.
I am thinking of doing Unrevoked because its the only one I know that does 2.2 root. Please give me links!
Thanks for the massive help tho.

Custom recovery will either be "R.A." or "ClockworkMod." They are a little different from each other. People usually use R.A. They say that clockworkmod doesn't delete cache right, but I personally use clockwork. What a recovery is, is a menu outside the phones system that allows you to install flashable zips. It also allows you to wipe anything, format anything and create & restore nandroid back ups.
There are tons of Roms. Roms are the system of your phone. Usually flashed from the SD card.

If you do unrevoked forever, you won't lose root when you accept an OTA.

The one thing i have seen is that if you root and use unrevoked forever then you can't accept OTA's either, i have seen this with alot of people including myself, not sure why, but you can download the OTA, but it will not upack, literally, as you start it just freeze's up within the first mintues, and no matter how many times you try, it won't take.

Hmm... I haven't heard of that but don't doubt it.
The thing is, the devs here usually get their hands on OTAs before they are rolled out, then they make them better and package them into their ROMs. I see no reason to even care about receiving OTAs at all, tbqh
Well i was reading about it and from what I gathered up.
It tells me that if you have a custom Rom you aren't able to accept OTAs,I don't wanna manually update my phone. I don't even know how.
But I need to know of a custom recovery with disable me from getting OTAs,help?
If I should use any custom recovery or any team who should I get my root from? I have a unrooted 2.2 sense.
I need a guide and video tutorial,ha.
I'm on my girls MAC,so no windows stuff please.

Referring to your original post here, I wouldn't root until you are fully comfortable with getting down and dirty with your phone. You say you don't want to or even know how to manually update your phone, well that is Android 101. If you aren't fully familiar with everything that rooting entails (custom recoveries, kernels, ROMs, SU permissions) then you need to keep reading. I spent weeks reading everything I could find before I rooted my phone and I suggest doing the same so you don't potentially fark things up.
Read the wiki, read through the rooting threads in development and really try and build a full understanding of what you're doing before you make the leap.
Well I've rooted my g1 way back then. But I know its not the same concept anymore, but they really never had an update it was just 1.6 so yeah.
I just want OTAs still.
Does any one know what is an Nandroid?
Sent from my HTC EVO
I agree with _MetalHead_ . You really need to read more on rooting, ROMS (and in the process, you'll learn about Nandroid!) before proceeding. I also spent weeks reading and then I didn't go full root - just enough to get wireless tether. Then, I read some more. There are some incredibly helpful people here as well as some incredibly rude people.
While unrevoked can get you started, learn adb and get comfortable pulling and pushing apks. Get very comfortable with Nandroid because it's going to save you.
My lessons learned are 1) NEVER accept an OTA update because it can take devs a long while to gain root, and 2) be patient and NEVER pull the battery while the Evo is doing something - like updating.
I use apk files already and unrooted.
And thank you very helpful.
PLEASE someone tell me what Nandroid is.
And sites where I can learn about rooting all together.
What do I need to look for?

A nandroid backup can be done from the recovery screen and it essentially backs up your phone EXACTLY as it is when you run it. So if you want to change something, you nandroid backup (which includes contacts, themes, settings, everything) and if your change doesn't work out, you can boot into recovery and restore your nandroid backup.

Just did a little research. The reason why the updates won't take is because of the custom recovery. You need to flash a stock recovery in order to accept updates. It's on Unrevoked's website.

Google is your friend. Nandroid is a way to backup and restore your phone.
I already posted the link to the wiki, that is the first place you should start. Next, read through a lot of rooting threads in the development forum here on xda. If you still have questions use the forum's search tool and use google. You gotta do the legwork.

New EVO with 2.2....Is There a Way to Root?

I've never rooted anything but now that I've ditched the EPIC the first question becomes....is there a way to get full root with a new device that has stock FROYO loaded?
I have not yet installed this morning update and figured I'd wait to see about rooting.
What I would like to accomplish is to get rid of all the pre-loaded crap, realize some better battery life and then get the FPS update.
So...assuming I can root, do I then flash a custom rom or?
Seriously....your assistance would be greatly appreciated as the plethora of how to threads gets rather confusing here
I got my Evo a few days after Froyo was released, so the Sprint rep updated it for me. The simple root method is, well, simple. Just use that and then flash any rom you choose and yes you will be able to rid your phone of all the bulk software. Depending on the rom and how you configure your device, battery life will vary.
One of the biggest decisions you'll have to make is choosing between a sense rom or the stock android look. Some roms combine both. Cyanogen my recommendation If you want to try the stock look, it's also the fastest I've used. As for sense roms, I'de suggest you try em' all.
So what made you switch from the Epic? I was thinking about trying it out...

unrevoked seems to do the job... even after applying the ota update u stay with s-off which lets u flash custom recovery and roms.
one thing that does suck with being rooted this way is that the engineering boot gives u much more than what the new one does... but thats for more advanced users.
yea rooted mine today using unrevoked but was on mac so was a little easier to do but is still a simple process from what it was before look around on youtube and on these forums youll find what your looking for just a simple search and your golden

Roms? Just start clicking and reading. Pretty much every rom has a description and instructions on how to flash.
I truly appreciate the replies
One question I have is this....
Is one root method better than others?
Also, can one un root if need be more easily with one root method vs another?
Lastly....do all root methods still allow the camera to work or?

Camera issues seem all fixed on the all the roms, but that's more of a rom issue not a root issue.
You can un-root, re-root, run a RUU, run a rooted stock rom, etc. there's so many choices I suggest you go to the guides in one of the first posts and start reading.

Better? Thats a matter of opinion. One click will put you on clockwork recovery which has had a lot of issues as far as not wiping correctly and that can cause problems flashing rom to rom so if you choose that method I'd switch to Amon_Ras recovery. Just run a search to find it.
Unrooting is the same no matter how you root.
A root method wont break your camera.
Again...
The assistance from you folks is much appreciated

[Q] rooting, I really...

Hi, I have the desire, and well I'm board with it, I want to mess around with different roms like miui, gingerbread extra. But I don't understand, please could someone help me with some of my questions? Thank :
1) What are the chances of breaking it through rooting, and what could happen, and would should you do it it does happen?
2) what does bricked mean, and is there away of unbricking?
1) what do you do if a bad rom breaks?
1.5) what are the chances of things going wrong?
2) Can you have more than one rom installed at a time, and switch between them, a bit like you can with launchers, and uses the same apps and data on those roms?
2.5) Is unrevoked the best way to root?
3) I you can have more than one rom, can you have a gingerbread rom, side loaded with a froyo from?
4) How do you switch between the roms?
5)Does rooting affect battery life?
6) Using unrevoked, is there anyway to unroot?
7) where do you find roms, and does the rom manager in the market allow you to install them without flashing?
8)Is there a good htc sense hd or gingerbread rom that works well?
9) With different roms increase the speed of the device, like the n1 is faster than the desire, yet they have the same hardware?
I know that a lot of questions but i am really nervousness about this and I can't seem to find todate answerers to these questions. If someone could help me with these questions I would be very great full, as I want to get more our of my device. Thanks ( I know there are a lot of rooting threads, but I really need to find out as much as i can before I undergo this, I love my desire too much to allow it to break when there was something that i could have done)
There is a remote chance (0.00000001%) of anything going wrong as long as you follow the steps to the rooting process and S-Off. If you become bricked then there is a topic on how to unbrick.
Easiest and best way to root is to using unrevoked 3.32. Make sure you download the HBoot drivers from their website. After rooting, it is also good to make your device S-Off'd. Your able to flash HBoot templates to change partition sizes and also change the splash and remove system apps and so on.
You can only have 1 rom installed at a time. You have to flash roms as well, that's how you install them and other zip files through the recovery. If a rom breaks, you can just flash it again. Installing a rom takes 5 mins, if that really.
You find roms in the Android Dev section. You can use Rom Manager but you have to pay or something.
You can have a fast rom or a "slower" rom. It depends on how it's been built and stuff but also the kernel can help to speed things up. (Speed isn't always the answer). There is no best or crappiest rom either. It's best to test many out for yourself.
Battery life again depends on the rom and the kernel.
Things To Download
To root a device
To S-Off your device
Roms and alsort of other nice things
Hope this helps you out.
Thanks very much , but do you need to install "S-Off" as I don't quite understand what it does, and which one to download and how to install it. Thanks
You don't need to install S-Off after a root. S-Off just allows you to do more things like uninstall system apps, change the splash screen, change the HBoot (not quite sure what else). If your not going to be doing them sort of things then stay away from it.
When you root, the unrevoked utility roots it and changes the recovery to ClockworkMod 2.5.1.8. That recovery allows you to boot into it and install roms through it. It has a menu and you use your optical tracker to navigate through them. That is how you install different roms.
With the roms, you need to see which one you like. I've been through almost all of them and I have one I stick to now. I can't say which is the best, that's for you to decide. The Gingerbread roms are Android 2.3 and I THINK, emphasis on the THINK, that the rest of the roms are Android 2.2.
I think at first your like, oh what if I mess things up and stuff but you won't if you follow instructions. When I first did it, I completely messed up and couldn't even boot into a rom at all and was wondering how to sort it out. I got there in the end but still. I also forgot to mention, if you want the stock rom back, you can install one of the RUU's. It will wipe everything and you will have to root again, but you will have stock.
Thanks very much , when change roms will you lose all of your apps, and data?
Yes. When your changing roms, you have to erase all data. It is a must and everything will go, apps, user data including texts and contacts, EVERYTHING!!!.
Thanks so much for all your help, i'm going to do it now, and use cyanogen mod 7 or 6.x. Thanks again
No worries. If you get stuck, just message me or something.
Completely IGNORE S-OFF if you're a n00b, it shouldn't be recommended to anyone who:
1. Doesn't know what it is
2. Doesn't actually need it
Concentrate on rooting and running a custom ROM first
Not actually true. When I S-Off'd my Desire, I didn't have a bloody clue, other than it disables all security, what it was. You eventually learn things like I did and read a little more. S-Off is a great tool to have on your phone because it gives you all the more freedom to do what ever you want with your device. I will say for all the "n00bs" out there that if you are S-Off'ing then please read it all carefully, unlike me because I could have messed it all up.
You were lucky - better to learn first, do second

I had a stock Desire and wouldn't move from it. Then the niggles in the current build just annoyed me enough to actually go down the root route (see what I did there? )
So I rooted and after a few mishaps along the way (make backups of everything, phone and SD card, especially if you partition it!) I am very happy with my Ginger Villain ROM. A few things still niggle (Me avatar in texts blank, phone reboots randomly to name a few), but its not as bad as it used to be. I can live without Sense as well surprisingly enough.
I also did the same for a friend, and stuck them on LeeDroid 2.3d and as they are technically challenged, it works for them sweet as.

Haha that made me laugh. As for your contact icon of yourself, you need to add yourself. Your own number and name and then you can add a picture. Yes it is annoying a little because Android natively doesn't have like a "contact card" for yourself.
Rooting and S-Off is the best thing I did by far

Odd, I don't have that, I had it in the Sense UI, not on the stock Ginger Villain ROM, unless I am missing something ...

[Q] What do I do first?

I have a stock 2.1 Defy coming my way tomorrow. My goal is to get a custom ROM with an overclockable kernel that achieves the best battery life possible, while offering marginally cool features. What do I do? I haven't had a Moto Android phone and am used to Samsung/HTC. I read stuff about people getting stuck with friend recovery consoles, not having a custom bootloader, not being able to downgrade ROMs, etc.
What do I need to do? I have read the guides but aren't they now outdated since there is an official FroYo release?
How do I ensure I don't build myself into a box?
Do you guys recommend rooting, custom rom, etc FIRST before configuring any of my data/apps?
Thanks for all the help!
Read the guides and "brick" threads, and don't try before you understand every step and the purpose. It probably won't really brick when you messed up, but could get you a heart attack

Do you guys recommend rooting, custom rom, etc FIRST before configuring any of my data/apps?
Thanks for all the help!

2) http://www.multiupload.com/JB1B50GTU0 (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839640)
3) Get the 2.5.1.8 clockworkmod installed
4) Make a backup! (boot into clockworkmod)
5) SAVE THIS BACKUP SOMEWHERE SAFE
6) Upload your backup for us to enjoy!
Don't worry.. it's really hard to brick this phone, due to the locked bootloader. The worst that will happen is you'll find the screen is black and doesn't turn on.. but even this can be recovered from.
Don't forget to upload your Nandroid backup! (I've been looking for a good stock Nandroid backup of a virgin Defy..)
So I should do everything you listed BEFORE configuring data/apps?

Only if you want us to have a copy of your system settings, passwords, etc., etc.
Forgetting about the Nandroid backup... I'm referring specifically to functionality. Do I lose anything by configuring before doing all of this? Once I have Clockwork installed, I can install ANY ROM? Are there limitations on 2.1 to 2.2 stock vs/custom, etc?

Restore DI2 Completely To Stock In Prep For ICS?

Please excuse anything I say that may seem laughable, ridiculous, or wrong, as I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to these things.
I just recently found out that the Droid Incredible 2 is receiving an official Ice Cream Sandwhich update soon, but I'm rooted (used downgrade and revolutionary method), and have clockwork mod recovery flashed. I'm on Android 2.3.3. I want to return my phone to spotless, brick free stock in order to prepare for the ICS update.
Reading up on this, the closest I've come is finding a guide which involves flashing a stock hboot and downgrading to froyo and updating to gingerbread from there (can't post a link as a new user). I just want to know, will doing this remove everything, including CWM Recovery, and return it to stock? I fear that if even if I were to succeed at changing the hboot, I'd be stuck with CWM Recovery or super user or something.
If not, can I get instructions on how to return my phone to stock in preparation for ICS? I don't want to do this, try and update, and brick my phone because remnants of CWM or Revolutionary or Superuser remain on my phone.
Thanks to any reply in advance!

why not wait till we get the ota and someone makes a rom put of it for us (like the same day) root is always better than stock.

I was considering that possibility also. An official rom could be flashed with cwm and would work just as well as an official ota update, yes?
Sorry, I'm very clueless when it comes to stuff like this.

Example: someone wants stock 2.3.3....flash anybonesstock
When you want official ics...flash whatever someone prepared...probably condemned soul or nit

What exactly is condemned soul and nit?
I'm going to be honest though, the only reason I rooted in the first place was to freeze bloatware (not flash anything), I actually like HTC Sense and would feel much more at ease if I could just get rid of root and go back to the way my phone was right out the box.

Ah, thanks for the info. If I'm unable to find a way to get back to stock to do an ota (I prefer official, I have OCD over these things), I'll definitely check it out. Thanks!
Couple things, first, while the Inc2 will get ICS, it's anyone's guess when that'll happen, and I seriously doubt it'll be in anyone's idea of "soon". As it needs to clear Verizon, and there haven't been any leaks yet, I would be shocked if we got an OTA before fall. Second, an OTA will likely include a new hboot which would almost certainly address the exploit Revolutionary used to gain s-off. That could leave you with HTC's unlock as your only way to get root back, and HTC's unlock means you're forfeiting your warranty. Maybe you're ok with that, maybe not.
Honestly, if it were me, I'd download all the files and instructions from the RootzWiki restore to stock thread and put them somewhere for safe keeping. When the OTA comes out, you could restore then and receive it, or certainly by that time there will be roms available based on leaks of the OTA.
If you don't mind all the bloat, don't need root and are willing to potentially loose root permanently, then go ahead and restore to stock now, but I guarantee you'd be months premature if the sole purpose is the ICS OTA.
As for your concern about the restore leaving a trace of root or Clockwork... It won't. Your phone will be 100% stock - hboot, recovery, kernel and rom.

One more thing. From what I've read/heard the Official Dinc II ICS will be Sense 3.6, where as the One V port that is being worked on is Sense 4.0.
I don't know what the differences are, but obviously 4.0 is 0.4 better than 3.6.

Yeah, I don't want to go back to stock now, but rather wait until the update is close to release and restore to stock then. I'd rather not flash a custom from, as I'm kinda OCD about "official" and stuff. I don't mind losing rooting capabilities after the ics update.
As for the rootzwiki restore to stock thread, does it include directions specificially for the Inc 2, or is returning to stock a universal method for all devices? Don't I need specific files, tools, and direction for my phone and its firmware? Can you point me in the direction on where I can find these directions and files? I'm such a noob at this, and I apologize for not knowing anything. I just don't want to stumble across a thread where I download a wrong file and flash something bad and I'm screwed over for good.
Thanks SO much for all the help everyone!

Is this the thread you were referring to, Chris? It seems sorta risky, but I'm willing to do it if I have a fighting chance. But AlpharevX, I'm assuming they mean Inc2's running 2.3.3 that were most likely rooted using the downgrade method with revolutionary? If so, I'd try it out.
Just a quick question, would there possibly be any roms that are identical to an official OTA update for the Inc2 when it comes out?
Apart from my obsessive desire to have an official firmware, I'm concerned about the camera. Excuse me if I'm wrong, but when I flashed cyanogenmod, the camera didn't seem as good as it was on stock htc sense. Not sure if I was just seeing things or not.

Yes, that's the thread, and it's specifically for the Inc2. AlpharevX and Revolutionary are the same things, so those instructions will work for both.
And yea, I agree about the camera. I recently flashed AndyBone Stock and the camera is definitely better. A shame because I really like stock CM7. I'm really hoping the CM9 based camera is better.
Thank you all for all the help! I'll try and do it once I sort out another problem of mine...
Restoring to stock can be risky. Who wants to brick there device right before the ics ota? But that's just my opinion. Theres a video showing you how to unroot your device by Nat3mil. Type his name in youtube and go to his channel. The video is one of his first videos so it will be on the bottom. He also has a guide showing you how to root, I used it for my phone. Someone will have an ota rooted ics Rom the first day (FYI)
PS. While your rooted you should at least try different Roms. It can be very enjoyable. I know you will like it.

@ChrisDDD: the CM9 camera isn't very good imo. It doesn't seem to focus as well as stock, and when you zoom in on your pictures taken, they are grainy.
