So, a Huge thanks to all those who worked on the method to get 2.2 rooted. I followed the directions and I am here, rooted. I used the Amon_Ra for my recovery back to 2.2. Now, this might be a stupid question, but What now? My phone looks the same, and I still can't remove sprint stuff. What are the next steps, I know i can install a custom "higher speed ROM", but can i just work from where i am now? I have the Superuser icon, but when i open it, i get "no apps in list" ? what do i need to install to start taking advantage of all that rooting has to offer?
Thanks for your replies!!

Choose a new fancy ROM, download it to your SD card and use Amon to flash it. Easy as pie.
They are many great ROMs from many great developers here. Everyone has their preferences, mine is Fresh. I've never been dissapointed.
Agreed.....I can tell a big difference in speed and battery life but now what? I also can't delete any of the Sprint bloatware and I am on Baked Sense 1.6.
I don't understand: Why would you root your phone if you don't even know what it does? Not trying to be a ****; I'm just saying.
Firstly, if you rooted, all you did was revert your phone back to 2.1 so you no longer have Froyo. (edit: nevermind.....I see you want back to 2.2; I'm guessing you flashed a 2.2 stock rooted rom to your phone). The superuser app is empty because it hasn't given superuser permission to any apps that require it. If you want to see your superuser app in action, download ShootMe or screenshot from the market, and you will see the app asks for superuser permission.
I rooted my phone because I thought it was ridiculous to pay Sprint $30 a month to use the wireless tether option that was built into the Evo by HTC and which I already paid for when I purchased the phone. Now I use my root privileges to do a lot more, but my point is that I had a reason to root my phone to begin with. Download wireless tether and try it.
If you want to uninstall apps, download Titanium Back up (that's what I use anyway) and go to town removing stuff. I am not sure if the free version removes apps or not because I got the paid one from the beginning, but now that you are rooted, it is well worth the price for the premium license. You can use this app to move stuff to your SD card and free up your phone's internal memory, too. You can also back up all your apps and system data which is handy when you flash from one rom to another and you have to do a full wipe of your phone.

Some of the ROMs have all that stuff removed for you, such as Fresh.
First thing to do: Head over to the developer forum and flash Netarchy's kernel, which will uncap your FPS. Do it ASAP, DO IT NAO!!!!1!!1!1!eleven. Then come back here and tell us how amazing it is.
thanks for the input
Thanks for all the replies! Rugedraw - i especially appreciate your indepth answer despite the fact that you are clearly somewhat annoyed by the question.
Here's the thing. The android revolution is ongoing and picking up steam. and i could talk about that all day long. Opensource, kick blackberry in the berry, and send apple back to where it was after its huge popularity boom in the 90s - struggling to overcome its fatal closed system flaw. Beyond that, I bought my Evo for 2 reasons. My 16 month son threw my blackberry into the toilet (nice work - i now appreciate it), and my tech guy at work has been raving about his rooted Droid x2. as of 10 days ago it didn't seem possible to root the 2.2 froyo, but he told be to be on the lookout. I figured this is a little like an arms race and that the sooner i rooted my phone when the method was avail. the better. (tech guy is in italy with his fiancee right now, or i would be asking him all these questions)
Soooo, it seemed to me, that in the spirit of owning an opensource device and joining the android revolution, that i should root my phone and unlock all the magic.
I'm no computer programming whiz, i dont write code, and i learned all of the terminology on this board in the last 2 days. So lost, but learning fast.
I did not root my phone for no reason. I clearly understand the utility of having superuser status (besides, most guys are wired to want that kinda thing regardless) - deleting annoying sprint apps that chew power, "re-tuning" the device to run more efficiently, and of course, free wifi tethering.
But, after completing the most excellent root method described in this forum, i found myself staring at a rooted 2.2 and wondering what the next step was. There are NO google results for "i've rooted my evo 4, now what?" so thats why i started this thread, figuring that I was not the only one in my situation
THAT enormously long winded explanation complete, I would love to aggregate the appropriate options in this thread. Method to wipe, list of Flash Roms for a rooted 2.2 EVO.
Again, thanks for all the replies,
btw what does "uncap your FPS" mean?
If you did unrevoked then I would flash the latest Amon-RA recovery image. No offense to clockworkmod, amon is just my preference.
Poke around the recovery console and learn how it works.
NAND FIRST!! haha, develop that habit before you flash anything (roms, kernels, etc.), just in case
-Flash a rom that suits your needs. Read their OP's and threads to learn what they are about and what the people that use them think. I would suggest you just flash the stock rooted 2.2, play with it for a week or two to see how root works and explore what you can do with it. Also look into backup methods so you are familiar with how to preserve your stuff when you flash a different rom.
FPS = frames per second. There are kernels that will lift the 30fps cap.
Read about kernels and how to take advantage of them.
I know I've been pretty general, just pick a trail and start walking, when you have questions ask em
I like your logic of titling the thread exactly what you searched for, usin yer brains to make this thread more beneficial to the next guy (imagine a thumbs-up smiley here)

It is highly recommended that you do what he says! You'll see a major improvement in lots of areas. In case you're curious here is my setup: STOCK 2.2 w/ Netarchy kernal. I chose the stock 2.2 so that I may do with it what I like. It's very fast and very stable.

You can remove Sprint stuff, just have to spend some time and learn to use ADB. Rooting an EVO is not the same as rooting an iPhone, you can pretty much do everything you can from rooting an iPhone without even rooting Android so the difference is not that great.
Most of what you gain from rooting Android is being able to do things the carrier doesn't wan't you to do such as install free wifi tethering, remove their apps etc... You can also install others roms where they have already done this stuff for you but from what I have seen on the EVO and 2.2 battery life suffers greatly on pretty much any rom other than stock rooted so there is a lot to be gained from learning adb and just working with the stock rooted rom to remove the apps you wan't to.
I'm in the same boat. I got my new EVO on Tuesday, it was rooted an hour later. Why? Because that's how we do things! First thing for me it was important to have tethering. Work blocks damned near everything. As I learn more about the Android system I'll get more use out of root.
I was carefully paying attention to the thread and particularly bluehaze's answer. I'd like to learn more about using adb to remove sprint crap. That amazon app is always restarting itself. If there an ADB for newbs guide around here anywhere? I looked but didn't see.
There are a few things that I use which make root a necessity.
- custom ROMs provide a setup more tailored to what you are personally looking for
- using wireless tethering without being artificially limited to Sprint's commercial offering
- backups! I can boot into recovery and make a backup image of my setup at any point. That way no matter what settings I change or what ROMs I test out, I can always go right back to my stable daily driver in 5 minutes if needed.
- custom recovery and superuser allow you to install things, uninstall things, theme things, etc. Nothing worse than not being able to change something on my own device
- speed, battery, etc. via tweaked kernels. I'm using Baked Snack's ROM and kernel now and it's way faster and nicer on battery than stock
nOObs need love too

New guy...
Same here, I just rooted my Evo today and everything seems to be working great. But I'm clueless on how to put a rom on to my sd card so I can flash it to my evo.
Can any one send me a link to a basic how to..

Oke, quick question guys.
I have an unbranded HTC Desire UNROOTED, haven't rooted it yet...
It came with 2.2 and fully working etc..
My following question, is it worth it to root my phone and get a ROM?
What are the benefits of using a ROM on HTC Desire...
Because I've been reading comments on different ROMs for ages now and I just can't figure out which is best and has everything working.
I want a clean ROM which I then can flash a theme on, so it probably should not be odexed. Sorry for so many questions I just want to be sure.
So basically my question is root or not root, and if root, which ROM.
Share your experiences please, thanks !
Same here, what are the disadvantages to ROMs and rooting over a stock ROM??? Just problems with changing SD cards? Stability? Bugs??
a2sd+ and ****load of space for apps is no. 1 for me.
Every rom is stable enough for heavy everyday usage, unless they are marked as experimental, beta or something along those lines.
Youll be able to install as many apps you want with a2sd+ which is better than stock FroYo a2sd as all of the apps actually go onto the sd card.
Speed is massively improved on vanilla and sense roms, which is always lovely.
Endless mods too. Youll be able to pick themes for your roms, and even make your own if youre up to it.
Hopefully that will convert you

Thats very true, but rooting basically unlocks everything, except system access, but thats nearly done
Haha, yeah, they do get quite peeved when you pay more attention on your phone than them
As for the hboot people, I think all hboots have been rooted, you just need to search the development forum.

I have rooted my phone and I'm happy I did it.
Just like the feeling of it that it can do more now and not be limited.
the new unrEVOked can root HBOOT 0.93 as I did it before going back to stock
I downgraded first, shouldn't make a different on how the ROM runs.
So downgrade hboot and then root and flash.
Right, but rooting messes up the OTA updates...
Rooting only affects otas if your not on an official rom.

U can use OTA updates with root, but you need to use fake flash to enter custom recovery, if u flash the custom recovery, removing the original one, u get an error when trying to update via OTA
And why finally decided to root my phone?
1. Because I love modifying gadgets.
2. More options, more space by extension.
3. You can always go back to unroot.
4. Theme Sense or Non-Sense.
5. Backup whole ROM.
Etc..
Those are the advantages I was looking for.
And I'm happy with it and had no trouble!
The updates will be on a ROM too anyways.
Don't ROOT
If i knew it was so hard to UNROOT i wouldn't have ROOTED in the first place...!
Why do you need to unroot so badly and what is preventing you?
So any other advantages of rooting apart from increasing internal memory? For stability and productivity, what ROMs are recommend? Is class two Sandisk ok for app2sd+? Can the ext3 partition be backed up or copied to another card?

The older method of Unrevoked was known to break 4G for some people. I don't know, because I've never used it, but I haven't heard any complaints from the people using the new Unrevoked.
To check if you phone is rooted properly, simply download the Superuser from the market and install it (you may already have it if it came on the rom you installed). If you do have, download shootme from the market and see if it allows you to take a screen shot of your phone. If it does, you're rooted.
What I don't understand, is why would you root the phone if you don't know what rooting does or what it can do for you.
I like the unrevoked root as it is easy to do and easy to remove.
The best part of rooting for me is installing custom roms and getting rid of the bloatware from sprint. Also by installing one of the new custom roms you will get the new leaked HTC OTA update (thanks to flipz) which makes the EVO a lot more usable because you actually get decent battery.
Wifi tether and quickboot are nice too.
Go try a new rom with some interesting additions like bakedsnack or vaelpack and you'll soon get the hang of it. First thing you need to do is install a custom recovery. You can use clockwork or amon ra, but I've had a few problems with clockwork so I would recommend amon ra. Either of these let you install custom roms and do nandroid backups.

Best place to get roms and kernels would be under the development forums on this website.
They are specific to the phone (ie you likely cannot run a Desire rom on your EVO).
Always backup your nand with whatever recovery image your using before flashing new stuff, that way you can always get back to where you were if you screw something up.
I want to Root my Evo,but i have no idea if i will be able to get my gingerbread or even honeycomb OTA update.
i really dont know how to do manually updates,i dont know if its even hard to do.
What is a good/reliable team to get my rooting access from?
in Mind is the UnrEVOked team.
please give me your opinions to help me make the right decisions.
and threads or anything useful for me to have.
If you stay on the stock ROM you should still be able to get ota's but you might loose your root. The cooked ROMs will be updated usually before the official updates are even rolled out, and most likely tweaked and improved. I wouldn't even worry about sprints updates. As far as choosing a ROM, just read through the development forum and read what the ROM offers and the comments through the thread of users reporting bugs (if any) and opinions of performance. Baked snack, CM, and fresh seem to be the most popular and stable. Start with one of those. I used calkulin and frost, both work well too if you like vanilla Android, fresh was the only sense ROM I used and it was very nice. Its all about what look you want and customization. Thats the beauty of Android.
There are plenty of tutorials on the process, read the useful threads and links thread. Thats a good place to start. When ROMs get updated just flash over the previous unless the dev says a wipe is needed, which is rare.
I mean I love my sense. I can't go on without the beautiful widgets it comes with.
Plus the upgrade they're doing for sense is coming out soon.
But I need to know if a custom recovery is the same as a custom Rom.
I am thinking of doing Unrevoked because its the only one I know that does 2.2 root. Please give me links!
Thanks for the massive help tho.

Custom recovery will either be "R.A." or "ClockworkMod." They are a little different from each other. People usually use R.A. They say that clockworkmod doesn't delete cache right, but I personally use clockwork. What a recovery is, is a menu outside the phones system that allows you to install flashable zips. It also allows you to wipe anything, format anything and create & restore nandroid back ups.
There are tons of Roms. Roms are the system of your phone. Usually flashed from the SD card.

The one thing i have seen is that if you root and use unrevoked forever then you can't accept OTA's either, i have seen this with alot of people including myself, not sure why, but you can download the OTA, but it will not upack, literally, as you start it just freeze's up within the first mintues, and no matter how many times you try, it won't take.

Hmm... I haven't heard of that but don't doubt it.
The thing is, the devs here usually get their hands on OTAs before they are rolled out, then they make them better and package them into their ROMs. I see no reason to even care about receiving OTAs at all, tbqh
Well i was reading about it and from what I gathered up.
It tells me that if you have a custom Rom you aren't able to accept OTAs,I don't wanna manually update my phone. I don't even know how.
But I need to know of a custom recovery with disable me from getting OTAs,help?

Referring to your original post here, I wouldn't root until you are fully comfortable with getting down and dirty with your phone. You say you don't want to or even know how to manually update your phone, well that is Android 101. If you aren't fully familiar with everything that rooting entails (custom recoveries, kernels, ROMs, SU permissions) then you need to keep reading. I spent weeks reading everything I could find before I rooted my phone and I suggest doing the same so you don't potentially fark things up.
Read the wiki, read through the rooting threads in development and really try and build a full understanding of what you're doing before you make the leap.
Well I've rooted my g1 way back then. But I know its not the same concept anymore, but they really never had an update it was just 1.6 so yeah.
I just want OTAs still.
Does any one know what is an Nandroid?
Sent from my HTC EVO
I agree with _MetalHead_ . You really need to read more on rooting, ROMS (and in the process, you'll learn about Nandroid!) before proceeding. I also spent weeks reading and then I didn't go full root - just enough to get wireless tether. Then, I read some more. There are some incredibly helpful people here as well as some incredibly rude people.
While unrevoked can get you started, learn adb and get comfortable pulling and pushing apks. Get very comfortable with Nandroid because it's going to save you.
My lessons learned are 1) NEVER accept an OTA update because it can take devs a long while to gain root, and 2) be patient and NEVER pull the battery while the Evo is doing something - like updating.
I use apk files already and unrooted.
And thank you very helpful.
PLEASE someone tell me what Nandroid is.
And sites where I can learn about rooting all together.
What do I need to look for?

A nandroid backup can be done from the recovery screen and it essentially backs up your phone EXACTLY as it is when you run it. So if you want to change something, you nandroid backup (which includes contacts, themes, settings, everything) and if your change doesn't work out, you can boot into recovery and restore your nandroid backup.

Just did a little research. The reason why the updates won't take is because of the custom recovery. You need to flash a stock recovery in order to accept updates. It's on Unrevoked's website.

Google is your friend. Nandroid is a way to backup and restore your phone.
I already posted the link to the wiki, that is the first place you should start. Next, read through a lot of rooting threads in the development forum here on xda. If you still have questions use the forum's search tool and use google. You gotta do the legwork.

So I don't have an EVO, but I have a friend that does and will pay me to jailbreak it for him, so I was wondering:
Is there a ROM for the EVO that will keep all the stock OS components exactly the same and look and feel exactly the same, but will increase battery life and maybe tweak some speed and internet properties?
Thanks in advance.

Look into Sprint Lover's Rom....it is the same as stock except with some enhancements. All stock stuff is included. Never used it so don't know about speed but can find info in the development thread.
Otherwise, you could just root it and keep it as is afterwards. Would be exactly the same as stock except rooted and then the user could tweak it over time.
Honestly, all Sense based roms can be made to look exactly like stock but with extra enhancements and speed. A lot of developers will even provide a directory of stock apps taken out so they can be re-installed if someone wants to use them.
Yeah, but even I am new to ROMs and wouldn't have a clue where to begin with that level of custimization.
I think your best bet is to root (obviously) then flash a well-known Sense ROM, like Sprint Lover's. A lot of even the Sense ROMs are starting to customize and theme right out of the box, so it's harder to find a well-supported ROM that still looks stock, but I think Sprint Lover's is the one to beat right now.
After that, you may want to look into a kernel upgrade (a kernel comes as a zip that flashes in recovery just like a ROM, just make sure it's a Sense-compatible kernel). Probably Netarchy's 4.1.9.1 or something like that. I really suggest you read up on the debate over SBC kernels before you decide to use one of those, if you were ever thinking along those lines.
After you root, the first thing you should do (and before every flash) is to make a NANDROID BACKUP!!! Either ClockworkMod or Amon-RA will let you do that easily.
What's a Kernel upgrade? If Sprint Lover's really is the same look and feel with some tweaks to speed and battery, will I even need it?

Kernels are what happens behind the scenes in a rom. Calculations, battery compensation, CPU governors etc etc.
stock roms have kernels from HTC, which are actually known here to have pretty good battery life.
In addition to flashing a custom rom, adding a custom kernel may give more of an edge to what your friend needs.
Kernels here will range from great stability, great performance, or great battery life.
A good rule of thumb is that a good rom will only offer two out of the three, those that claim all generally are just assuming.
That being said there is no definite, uniform "best" combination as hardware/conditions will always be different. Flash a combo and see which works best for your buddy. If he spends a lot of time at the office and at home, performance is best. If he's on the road a lot, perhaps battery fixations will be better.
If he doesn't need much but needs to be able to make that call or text in a clinch regardless of conditions, he'll need stability.
The process seems intimidating coming from iPhone modification, but it can be fun and at times addicting to see what combo best suits you.
If you need something stock with upgraded tweaks, I recommend mikfroyo *4.2* or sprint lovers. As for a kernel, you're looking for Ziggy work. Netarchy is arguably one of the best, but you'll have to sift through a lot of version numbers to get one right, some are potentially dangerous to your specific device so I suggest you read up before downloading.

Is that so? So are there Kernels that can be applied to the stock ROM? That'd be the best case-scenario. He doesn't want his phone to look any different, but he'd favor battery life and performance over stability. Any Kernels come to mind, then?

You are going to have to flash a custom ROM before trying kernels anyway.
Start HERE.
It is on a different forum but it is instruction from this forum with pictures.
It includes an installation of sprint lovers, which is faster, and your friend will have more control over the system, such as removing bloatware, or wireless tether. Then he can easily try flashing kernels after that.

Please be aware that this process although the easiest and straightforward, it involves the process of flashing radios...
Under NO circumstances are you to turn off the phone or remove the battery during the img flash or your phone will brick.

That's seriously the easiest way to get Sprint Lover's? Looks incredibly complicated. All I had to do on my Droid X was install z4root, bootstrap recovery. Root my phone, make a backup, and install the rom from zip on SD card. Can't do that with the EVO?
it is not complicated.

Used unrEVOked3 software to root and unlock NAND (s-off). It is one of the cleanest and easiest rooting programs you could imagine.
Before you do this you will need to install HTC sync software from HTC's website, then uninstall ONLY the sync software portion, and leave the driver portion alone. You also need to install a modified hboot driver as well, as outlined in the link above.
After that, to flash a different ROM all you need to do is put it on your SD card and boot to recovery by turning the phone off, and then turning it back on while holding the volume down button. You can easily find the command to flash a new zip file within recovery.
And if you want to make things even easier, download (and I recommend purchasing) Rom Manager from the market, after you root.
Also, here is a ROM that might interest you. Called stock turbo.

I must make something clear about that ROM. The second post in that thread says that you should use a different recovery software than what is used with unrEVOked3. Although, I have successfully loaded this rom with clockworkmod in the past.
That ROM looks like exactly what I need. I have a couple questions, though:
What do I need to do before installing that ROM? I know I need to root the EVO. Is that as easy as getting z4root on the SDcard and installing?
Also, the dude recommends using Amon Ra 1.8 to back the phone up. How do I get that? SDcard install or something more complicated?
