Hi Guys, I hope I don't get flamed for asking this but how do you install a custom ROM from this website on Evo4G? I have downlaoded the ROM and also the ROM manager but when I go in the ROM manager and browse to the folder on the SD Card where I have copied the un-zipped version of the ROM files, it never lets me select anything.
Please help.
Without being rude, just Google "how to flash a Rom on evo 4G". There are links to threads here as well as other sites. If youre not the kind of person who's used to researching this stuff first I'd recommend staying away from flashing and XDA.
You don't want to unzip the ROM
Weird as it may seem, the Recovery flashes (installs) files in .zip format, it's just the way everything works on android.
Hey,
Make sure you search before you post, that being said if you need to download the rom and put it on your micro sd card! DO NOT unzip! you need to flash the zipped file!
That being said if you are using rom manager go to install zip from sd card chose the file! make sure you wipe the data cache and dalvik and hit okay and let your phone do its thing from there! during this process leave your phone alone and come back to it after it finished flashing and reset! and at any point of the process NEVER take out your battery!
Good luck and happy flashing!
I hope I helped If I did please hit the thanks button!

Thank you. Sometimes one is just stuck with something that is so simple to someone but yet complex to others.

Thank you both. That was indeed the missing piece, do not unzip the ROM! Let me give it a shot.
SMH are you even rooted? First you need to root your device Google "root evo 4g xda (insert hboot version here)" then Google "Amon RA evo4g xda" then backup your current rom then wipe everything except SD card and batterystats in amon RA wipe menu, go back to main menu to install zip from SD locate your zipped up rom and select then select to install then reboot and profit

alright, so i'm following this supposedly dummy proof guide and i'm still having issues. my tech level is somewhat high so i'm no tard nugget when it comes to these things.
i'm on step 32 here http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-evo-4g/99793-tutorial-idiot-proof-root-guide.html
i cannot get the update.zip to work. when getting to the recovery screen, i see the following
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
ignoring that and clicking "apply sdcard:update.zip"
i then get the following
"-- Instal from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted."
does anyone know what is going on and can possibly help me out? i've already un-mounted/re-mounted my SD card and tried all of those steps again and i'm still getting the same results. thank you!

is there a topic there or something i should be looking for? i've googled my exact problems, only to be directed here to xda to threads with different phones and no real fix to this issue. someone usually says "oh i tried it again and it worked", or "oh i re-did it all and it just worked".
i've already done all of that. so again, anyone...please

What's the name of the ROM you're trying to flash? Try selecting flash zip from SD card, then choose zip from SD card, then flash whichever ROM it is you're trying to flash. Make sure you wipe data and dalvik first.

i'm trying to flash a stock ROM, Supersonic_1.32.651.1_rooted.zip.
after re-doing everything, i went back to ROM manager and this time selecting "fix permissions" worked. i'm now trying to flash clockworkmod recovery and that's not working...so now i'm gonna try it manually again now that the permissions have been fixed supposedly.
the part in bold i didn't get at all lol
what do you mean by zip from SD card?
and yup, it's still not working. same error messages. why is rooting an Android so hard??? i haven't seen one guide that was all step by step ie 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 etc for first timers like myself. even the one i linked isn't a complete step by step.
when i get into recovery mode, this is what i see for options:
-reboot system now
-apply sdcard: update.zip
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition

Lol Okay, first off if you're using the apply update.zip feature in recovery, its not going to work unless the ROM you're trying to flash is named update.zip. when you go into recovery mode, what version recovery are you running? Is it the one with turquoise letters? Of it is then you're running Koush's clockwork recovery already and there is no need to flash. There should be some options, apply zip from SD card or something like that at the main screen in recovery mode. I'm not too sure, I use Amon RA's recovery. But after you select that you should be given a few options and one of them should choose zip from SD card.

That's the stock recovery. You haven't successfully flashed a custom recovery yet. Check this post in a sec for an edit, I have a tutorial that's skimmed down. You should be able to run through it quickly since you're almost done with the rooting process.
Okay, so I'm at work and I realize the info I've been giving you is riddled with grammatical errors and what-have-you, so just follow this guide from step 13 down.

the clockwork recovery did not work. i had to manually download that one. and it's called "update.zip". so this is why i'm trying to flash this. i have to flash this first in order to be able to flash other ROMs, or at least that was my understanding.
so, to recap, i tried to do "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery" in the ROM Manager and it kept giving me an error.
i started with unrevoked. it finishes, done, and i get rooted
then i downloaded ROM manager
tried to flash clockworkmod from ROM manager and it says "an error occured while flashing your recovery". no biggie
that's where the "update.zip" comes in. that is the same thing as the clockworkmod, except i'm manually downloading this on a computer and then loading it onto my phone.
then, reboot and go through the steps, and that's when i get the original errors posted in the OP.
edit: just saw your second post. thanks! that looks way freaking easier lol. i'll give it a try and report back. thanks again
after typing in "cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image" into the terminal emulator i get "No such file or directory"

if you dont have root yet, i just helped someone that pmd me about helping them root and with ota 4step root it took him about 7 mins and all we did was watch it work, and hes only had his evo for 1week and didnt actually know anything about rooting other than he wanted to flash my finisher rom. I was surprised how simple it really was. follow the easy directions HERE and youre golden lemme know how it goes. I suggest doing some research and deciding which rom you would like to use and then putting it on your sd root directory before you start. Also when it asks you what recovery image to flash i suggest amon-ra because it has NEVER failed me, even back to the hero. I have heard many complaints about the other. toasts is sweet too though. I am not ripping anyone since i cannot even make a recovery image, just letting you know what has been solid since day one for me.

Sweet as, man. So you actually did the process without a computer? Glad you found it helpful.
one more question. anyone know why google earth wouldn't be showing up in the market after root? using titanium and trying to restore, that's the only app that wouldn't restore, too.
I have looked on the forums but i haven't found a clear answer to this. If someone wants to give me a link to whatever post explains it, please do, since i'm sure i'm asking something that's already been answered somewhere.
I used the unrevoked method to root the phone:
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
Do i need to do something beyond that in order to load on a custom rom?
I used the clockworkmod to make a backup of the phone. If i load up a custom rom and decide i don't like it, will the clockworkmod remain on the phone or will the custom rom possibly replace it? If so, how do i restore the backup?
And lastly - how do i actually go about installing another rom? I wanted to try the Fresh rom. I looked at the thread on here for it but i didn't see any directions as to how to go about actually installing it.
Anyone? I'm sure this has been answered before - if someone can just give me the link to the thread i'll go read it. I just haven't had any luck finding the answer on my own.
once you have done unrevoked you should be good to flash roms youc an verify this by looking in the bootloader to see if it shows S off at the top.
To flash a rom first download what ever rom you want and place it on your sd card. boot to recovery and wipe dalvik, data and cache. then select install zip from sd. navigate to the rom and select it and you should flash the new rom. go back and select reboot phone. it will boot up and will take longer then it normally does while it does its magic and you should then boot to the new rom.
Clockwork will not be changed by the rom so no worries there and you can easily restore it by going to the same option you did to make the back up you should see restore. select the back upa nd poof your on your way.
Thanks a lot for the info omega. It does indeed show S-OFF at the top of the boot loader screen.
So just to be clear:
i go into the boot menu, go into recovery, select
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
advanced - wipe dalvik
and then do install zip from sdcard (after i've uploaded the rom zip file)
oh and one last question - if i want to restore it to what i have now, do i just use clockwork to restore the backup i made? or do i have to flash the original rom on there first?
Thanks again for the info

i saw a few people mention that but i also saw a few people mention having problems with it, so i thought it best/safer if i did it myself. Or at least i should know how to do it myself in case using something like rom manager doesn't work.
for the manual way you are spot on with the instructions, to restore you won't need to wipe, just nandroid> restore

im new to all of this so im not sure how to do everything yet i have kings rom now i dont know how to try a new one i hear i have to flah and move file to root of sd card and im not sure exactly what that means.. is it just saving the zip to the sd? as would i have to erase the old rom file on the zip before trying a new one or can i leave it on there?

You can leave the old rom file on there as long as its not named PC36IMG.zip
Well you must be rooted right??
And you must have a custom recovery like Clockwork Mod or Amon Ra right??
Well if you do than you download one of the roms off here. It will say somethin like "myn-rls4blahblahblah.zip.
Do not extract the zip.
If you download on pc, transfer it to the root of your sdcard (not in any folders)
Then shut your phone off..then hold volume down and power until your phone comes up to a white screen. You will see RECOVERY. Use volume down to go down and select recovery by pressing the power button.
Now youll be in recovery. Depending on the recovery you have it will be different, but you have to wipe all data, cache, and dalvik cache. Proly twice.
Then go back to main recovery screen and select install .zip from sdcard. Use volume down to find your rom file and select install. Let it do its thing then restart your phone. Done
If your already rooted you should dwnload the app titanium backup, its free and theres a paid ver. Too...your choice. Select backup all apps and settings. Then restoring your apps and settings are basically automated. Do this before you install your new rom.
Hope this helps
Edit-your rooted already, cause u have kings rom. Oops. oh and be prepared to be flamed cause u posted a question in the Android Development section. It shoulb be in the Q&A section. I dont trip, but some people do. Just a heads up

Ditto, and use punctuation. I don't read noob-speak.
Im still not able to get it im doing exactly as you put but it wont work it says in the recovery screen or whatever you wanna call it that it was installed and wen i reboot it still has my kings rom installed im not sure if im saving it wrong or what but when I go to the install frm zip option its on tha screen and not in a folder think u might know what im doin wrong?
Ok, again, PLEASE use punctuation. Its hard enough to read gibberish with punctuation, and without it, it's damn near impossible.
What EXACT steps are you doing, and what EXACT error are your getting? Did you put the rom's zip on the sd card? Where did you put it? Did you make a nandroid backup? Did you wipe cache, data, and dalvik? Did you to to "install zip from sd card"? Did you find that zip file? Did it flash?
Ok well what im doing is I will download the rom it saves in a folder called downloads. So after I seen that I used my computer to download it so it wouldn't be in a folder. I will turn my phone off then hold the vol. Key down while holding the power button down it then goes to the boot screen I think its called, then I wipe everything as im supposed to at leaetvtwice then go to install zip from sd. The file isn't in a folder its just on the first screen at the bottom I click that one and install. It says it was installed and goes back to the home screen wherebit has the options to reboot or wipe data andvso on so I reboot and there it is kings rom is still installed. Im not sure if its not downloaded correctly tovl the right spot or what. How can I download it and have it saved correctly using just my phone? Is there a wway i can move files or order them from my phone?

dude you actually need to select the .zip from the menu to flash it. flahsing copies over the files from your sdcard onto the phone itself. so flash and it will replace your rom.
btw the white screen is called hboot. not boot.
Out of all of this, I wasn't sure if you have a custom recovery installed. Dl rom manager form the market and 'flash alternate recovery' so youll have amon-ra's recovery installed. Then I use quick boot (in the market) to reboot into recovery. It has a lot of options to backup, wipe, flash, etc

hey so you need to actually flash the file. you're just booting into recovery and leaving it on your sdcard. after you wipe, select flash zip from sdcard on the main menu, find your zip, and SELECT IT. then scroll to yes, and flash. you should see some messages go by, ending in conformation that it worked. now reboot. it should take a while the first time, and you should end up in the new rom.
second of all, i'd switch to amon-ra recovery if i were you. his thread is here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
And make sure to do a nandroid backup first.
Noob here. No longer a virgin after this post. Ok, I have been reading for weeks and have most of the basic understanding down on phone setup and flashing using ROM Manager/CWM but still having issues I can't find answers to so here goes.
Samsung Captivate running 2.2 flashed from ODIN one click. Backed up apps and data using TI backup. I have installed ROM Manager, picked the Dragon ROM to flash and here are my problems.
1. ROM Manager 4.2.0.2 - Pick Flash CWM Recovery- 2.5.1.2, pick captivate, "successfully downloaded CWM Recovery" (did not say "installed" CW Recovery). Where did it download to and how do I install? Its not in My Files. Some of the recovery options are missing when in Sys recovery <3e>and don't look like the options listed in posts.
A. Tried to backup current ROM with RManager - It gave me a stamped file name, said "backed up" within a few seconds but when I click "manage and restore backups" I just get a black screen. Can't find the backed up ROM nor the files listed on one of the posts??? I read it takes several minutes and the copied files scroll. This did not happen.
B. Install ROM from SD card - Everyone has said make sure the ROM is installed in the "root", but exactly which file are we talking about??. No one ever says which file exactly. I use Droid Explorer and there is a file named SD Card, then SD. Which file is the ROM to be installed in? No file called "root". I used SD file and renamed it update.zip. I click "install ROM from SD" then pick SD and the update.zip file, click all three options (B/U ROM, wipe data N cache, dalvik cache then ok. Phone reboots, click reinstall packages, ERROR: E:failed to verify whole file signature - E: signature verification failed, installation aborted.
2. I have read to reinstall 2.1 via ODIN before flashing new ROM's. Trying to flash "Dragon ROM RC7" "Full Flash" which is 2.2.1. Can I not just flash this over 2.2?
I know there is more. I was up till 2 last night and tried to get all issues posted here. Like I said, pretty new to the ROM thing but not a dummy and can follow instructions. Have read a ton but there is sooo much out there. If anyone can help me through this I would be very greatful. Hitting the frustration point real quick now.
Found this: ROM Mgr 4.2.0.2 "Samsung users: You must flash a Clockwork compatible kernel first." This could be one issue. Which kernal? Have not tried to flash any kernals yet. Still reading.
Same issue
I'm having the exact same issue. Tried install and uninstall, no go.
Which part did you have a problem with. I have resolved the CWM issue and the errors I was getting in recovery.
you should youtube a tutorial on how to do this... it will take 10 minutes to explain how to do it all and it would be easier than going back and forth through forum messages. google can be your friend also if you just use it. if you eff it up too bad you can always put your phone back into dl mode and odin it back to stock.
True, Google can be you're best friend but at the same time, I was able to find a detailed fix right on the forum. After another hour or so of searches. Just installed my second ROM yesterday and running great. Chose the Dragon ROM for the Captivate. It's Great!! and I happen to be a fan of Dragons!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
And for phone specific questions post them in the phones forum, though not in developers forum
i found that rom manager does not work for certain phones, period. i use odin and flash cwm 2.5.1 to my phone while in download mode. then i can use the 3 button combo to get into cwm,oh yeah and dont forget to back up your rom version once in cwm! i then wipe cache (user data) and delvic cache and batt stats. then i go into a folder i created on "root" (which i made on the sd card) i store my roms/kernels themes ect...in this folder i pick which rom to install "please do your homework" make sure u know which rom ect, is right for your phone, or u will have a nice shinny paperweight!!!
ok so, now your in your folder with the rom of choice, flash install from .zip let it install.......takes awhile just be patient. thats about all i can say. took me awhile but its well worth it, i have a way better understanding about everything now. hope it helps, i own the mesmerise and found rom manager is useless for this type of application so ditch it!
I'm a beginner, i recently asked how to install the ics leak, apparently it's seem easy, one click but i was advise to root and install cwm...
so what exactly is CWM?
can anyone give me the following guides? with the most dumbed down instruction? (like button to press, where to activate things etc.)
How to root lg android?
brief explanation of what is cwm
how to install custom rom?
- while you explain, can you explain the concept of the phone? like recovery mode does this, debugging does that.
I used to be a iphone pro, but android, i'm a noob xD .
To root, download superoneclick v2.3.2 on your computer. NOT 2.3.3 as it doesn't work. Launch it and click root. If it doesn't work the first time, keep trying. It'll work eventually. Clockwork mod is a recovery mode. In your android You download rom manager in the play store, then click on it. Click flash clockwork mod recovery inside the app. It'll give u a list of devices. Select att nitro HD. Then download ho!no!s cwm flash able leak, (its in the android development section. Download that and go back to rom manager. REMEMBER YOU DO ALL THIS IN YOUR ANDROID XCEPT FOR ROOTING WITH SUPERONECLICK. Click reboot into recovery. Click on backup and restore. Click backup in that. Wait till its done. Then go back to the main menu in cwm. Click wipe data/factory reset. Then click yes. Then when its done go and click advanced. Click wipe dalvik cache. Click yes. Then press the back button. 1. Install superoneclick v2.3.2 precise. (did this on my skyrocket, but i'm just afraid diff android system have different way)
2. Download ROM manager, and flash clockwork mod within the app (okay, is the CWM is inside the app? or do i download it external, if so where)
3. Download Ho!no!s cwm, umh link please? xD and do i download it straight on the phone? or do I put dl it on pc, n put it on phone, if so, what is the directory i should put it in.
4. in rom manager, go to recovery (reboot)
5. click backup and restore - then back up
6. then go back out and click wipe data/factory reset-yes
7. click advanced
8. wipe dalvik cache -yes
9. then back button
10. then go to install zip from sd card (which .zip file?)
11. go back out and reboot system.

4. in rom manager, go to recovery (reboot)
5. click backup and restore - then back up
6. then go back out and click wipe data/factory reset-yes
7. click advanced
8. wipe dalvik cache -yes
9. then back button
10. then go to install zip from sd card (which .zip file?) The HO!NO! rom file you downloaded in step 3

Make sure you know where your .zip file is downloaded. You'll need to know where to find it while you're in CWM looking to "install .zip from SD card".
I'm still a noob as well. I've only flashed one rom so far, but I hope I've steered you in the right direction. My suggestions are what worked for me with my rom so you should be fine. If anyone sees errors in my advice please post so that we will all know.
well awesome man! thank you for making it bold and everything, really helpful. pretty much got everything sorted out now. the concept is pretty easy xD Much less hassle than iphone. btw, after flashing the cwm... how do you flash custom rom? xD lol. and which rom do you recommend? hono full throttle? seem like it got pretty good reviews.

Well I don't know if it's called "flashing" for CWM. It's more installing CWM with the ROM Manager app. Then once you've backed up your stock setup you can "flash" whichever rom zip you want to use.
I'm using CM9 RC1 because it had reviews of it being stable with everything working. I'm so new to this that I am hesitant to try all of the other roms that have bugs. I'll try one eventually though.
Hopefully you get a custom rom running today. :good:
the 1st thing you need to do is learn to use the search function. there's about 50+ threads on all of this, there's a repository of everything as well.
I'm rly starting to think we are doomed as people when every ****ng newb here has to start the same ****ing thread.
jesus christ, take some responsibility, this nitro is my 1st smartphone and i figured out how to use this forum to do the **** you are asking months ago.
stop acting helpless.

that very well may be, nevertheless, the frequency, redundancy & level of helplessness in these threads is sad.

I am new to this too and i followed that at least 20 times now and Super click just stops. Can anyone help?
SuperOneClick has been known to take several attempts to complete. From everything I've read just keep trying. Some guys have had to try 20 to 30 times to get it done successfully. It sounds like a pain, but it's worth it.
So super one click may still work with the updated NITRO?

Alright I got it rooted. Now what is a good noob friendly rom? Right now I am using CyanogenMod 9 RC2 but I dont like the fact that you cant put it in usb mass storage mode. Is there any way to fix that? and the fact that you have to install the play store.

Yes, follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671050
You only have to do this once for each computer you want to use USB mass storage on. It still sucks if you want to use it for USB mass storage on other computers, but if you only use it on one or two computers it's fine.
