Root Help, please - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

alright, so i'm following this supposedly dummy proof guide and i'm still having issues. my tech level is somewhat high so i'm no tard nugget when it comes to these things.
i'm on step 32 here http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-evo-4g/99793-tutorial-idiot-proof-root-guide.html
i cannot get the update.zip to work. when getting to the recovery screen, i see the following
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
ignoring that and clicking "apply sdcard:update.zip"
i then get the following
"-- Instal from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted."
does anyone know what is going on and can possibly help me out? i've already un-mounted/re-mounted my SD card and tried all of those steps again and i'm still getting the same results. thank you!

is there a topic there or something i should be looking for? i've googled my exact problems, only to be directed here to xda to threads with different phones and no real fix to this issue. someone usually says "oh i tried it again and it worked", or "oh i re-did it all and it just worked".
i've already done all of that. so again, anyone...please

what Sporkman was trying to get across is that this is the wrong forum to post this question. Go over to the forum Sporkman posted, and ask there.

What's the name of the ROM you're trying to flash? Try selecting flash zip from SD card, then choose zip from SD card, then flash whichever ROM it is you're trying to flash. Make sure you wipe data and dalvik first.

i'm trying to flash a stock ROM, Supersonic_1.32.651.1_rooted.zip.
after re-doing everything, i went back to ROM manager and this time selecting "fix permissions" worked. i'm now trying to flash clockworkmod recovery and that's not working...so now i'm gonna try it manually again now that the permissions have been fixed supposedly.
the part in bold i didn't get at all lol
what do you mean by zip from SD card?

and yup, it's still not working. same error messages. why is rooting an Android so hard??? i haven't seen one guide that was all step by step ie 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 etc for first timers like myself. even the one i linked isn't a complete step by step.

when i get into recovery mode, this is what i see for options:
-reboot system now
-apply sdcard: update.zip
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition

Lol Okay, first off if you're using the apply update.zip feature in recovery, its not going to work unless the ROM you're trying to flash is named update.zip. when you go into recovery mode, what version recovery are you running? Is it the one with turquoise letters? Of it is then you're running Koush's clockwork recovery already and there is no need to flash. There should be some options, apply zip from SD card or something like that at the main screen in recovery mode. I'm not too sure, I use Amon RA's recovery. But after you select that you should be given a few options and one of them should choose zip from SD card.

That's the stock recovery. You haven't successfully flashed a custom recovery yet. Check this post in a sec for an edit, I have a tutorial that's skimmed down. You should be able to run through it quickly since you're almost done with the rooting process.

Okay, so I'm at work and I realize the info I've been giving you is riddled with grammatical errors and what-have-you, so just follow this guide from step 13 down.

the clockwork recovery did not work. i had to manually download that one. and it's called "update.zip". so this is why i'm trying to flash this. i have to flash this first in order to be able to flash other ROMs, or at least that was my understanding.
so, to recap, i tried to do "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery" in the ROM Manager and it kept giving me an error.
i started with unrevoked. it finishes, done, and i get rooted
then i downloaded ROM manager
tried to flash clockworkmod from ROM manager and it says "an error occured while flashing your recovery". no biggie
that's where the "update.zip" comes in. that is the same thing as the clockworkmod, except i'm manually downloading this on a computer and then loading it onto my phone.
then, reboot and go through the steps, and that's when i get the original errors posted in the OP.
edit: just saw your second post. thanks! that looks way freaking easier lol. i'll give it a try and report back. thanks again

after typing in "cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image" into the terminal emulator i get "No such file or directory"

if you dont have root yet, i just helped someone that pmd me about helping them root and with ota 4step root it took him about 7 mins and all we did was watch it work, and hes only had his evo for 1week and didnt actually know anything about rooting other than he wanted to flash my finisher rom. I was surprised how simple it really was. follow the easy directions HERE and youre golden lemme know how it goes. I suggest doing some research and deciding which rom you would like to use and then putting it on your sd root directory before you start. Also when it asks you what recovery image to flash i suggest amon-ra because it has NEVER failed me, even back to the hero. I have heard many complaints about the other. toasts is sweet too though. I am not ripping anyone since i cannot even make a recovery image, just letting you know what has been solid since day one for me.

Sweet as, man. So you actually did the process without a computer? Glad you found it helpful.

one more question. anyone know why google earth wouldn't be showing up in the market after root? using titanium and trying to restore, that's the only app that wouldn't restore, too.

rooted....now lost! Please help

I did the root and I have the WiMAX setting and Wifi Tethering is working somewhat but I cant figure out how to flash my rom..I dl'd DamageControl 3.2 but i dont know what to really do now...When i try use ROM Manager I get the error..."an error occurred while attempting to run priviledge commands!" I'm just lost as to what i do now to start using a different rom
Bump.....ANYONE?!
So the following questions would need to be answered:
1) What version of stock were you running before you rooted? (i.e. 1.47, 1.32)
2) What root method did you use?
3) What recovery do you have?
4) If you have wireless tether working than you would need to have installed a custom kernel, which one did you install?
I'm sorry that no one else has tried to assist you in this, however, next time please post this in Q&A as this is for development purposes.

Okay during the process of rooting my device, ebo 4g, v1.3x
I ran into the same problem, you have to or I'm sure on this forum just do some research,.....
In RA, dalvik wipe, cache wipe and phone wipe. Then I flashed the rom via sd card, using clockwork custom recovery. If you used Simple root 3 click process you should have clock work.Via step 2.
Rename the Rom to update.zip and place in root sdcard.
Adb reboot recovery
Update.zip from SD card
Finnish do full system wipe and dalvik cache.
Make sure you are nand protected before flashing.
Via step 3
I don't know if this mighhelp just some recent stuff I ran into. Rooted my g1 a WHILE back. Hope these noobietips help lol

Do this! It's the fastest and easiest way.
Once you get 1.47 and singed sigs then do DC ROM again.

adb reboot recovery just reboots your phone into recovery mode. once your in that do all the wipes i think its 3 dlvk, data and something else. power off the phone once more then boot to recovery again. now one of the options is flash from zip go there and you should find whatever rom your trying to flash. also you should be putting your zipped rom files in the root directory of your sdcard. on a side not if your on a mac dont download them with safari use firefox or something else

nova,
I had the same boot loop issue. My thread for it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728955
The issue was that I wasn't totally 100% rooted. By carefully following these directions, I was able to resolve my issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721055
I hope this helps also, I did it using the "PC" method. If you have questions regarding those instructions I'd be happy to share my personal experience.

Errr... maybe? Superuser permission, etc. certainly doesn't come with stock. It depends on the ROM you installed. Here's one way to find out...
Go to Settings -> About Phone -> Software Information and check the "Build Number". AFAIK it's impossible to install DamageControl without full root (I tried to myself before fixing my root and going to Fresh 1.0.1) so if that's what you have I'd say you're good.
There may be a better way but that's all I know.

[Q] rooted evo... bricked evo... help!

got my evo about a month ago. rooted lastnight since unrevoked finally pushed out their 3.3 version which is updated for my version of hboot (2.02). the root went very smoothly. i installed the latest cyanogenmod rom, only to discover there was no market or gmail app with the rom! wish i had known that before. after doing some research online, i found out i needed to flash or install a "gapps" apk. so, looked around for that for a couple hours and couldn't find it. i downloaded what i thought would be the right .zip file to get the market on my phone (a vending.apk that was listed in another thread having to do with this same issue). so anyway... downloaded that, moved it to the root of my sd card, flashed it through clockworkmod recovery (by the way, everything up until this point was perfect) and finally rebooted my phone... only it never rebooted. the white htc EVO 4G screen was there. then, black screen, as if it was about to begin the cyanogenmod boot screen and fully boot. but, no. it went from white evo screen to black screen... to OFF. after this, i couldn't even turn it on to get it into hboot or access recovery. tried to do that for two hours. and finally i was able to get in... so i tried doing a factory/data reset through recovery, then a cache clear, then reboot. nothing. same thing. went back into recovery, tried reflashing cyanogenmod rom again. nothing. tried flashing myn's rom. nothing. all i get is installation aborted.
i am pretty sure that this is not a complete brick since i am now able to access hboot and recovery. but if i can't flash anything... and i'm stuck in hboot and recovery and cant boot my phone... what the hell do i do now? please help me figure this out!! anybody have any good advice or a known fix...??
Boot into recovery. Do a factory reset. then wipe cache and dalvik catch. Re flash cynagon and let it boot. You then need to find gapps.zip. Boot into recovery flashing gapps.zip.
i did all that. step by step. and when i reflashed the rom, that is when it wouldn't install, saying installation aborted. but, i'm gonna do it again. let's see if my phone wants to play nice now...

If that does not work! you are going to have to update with sprint lovers rom, that is in a PCM36IMG.ZIP. Install it by holding the _vol and th power button, boot into boot loader, than it will search for the zip file and ask you if you want to update, say yes ans just weigh for it to be done. Its going to take few minutes first boot! just hold on. I hope this helps in anyway.

Did you try a rooted RUU yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic/ROMs
Wipe everything twice first (just to be safe). Are you using Amon RA or Clockwork, by the way? The only other thing I can think of would be that your SD card isn't formatted properly, but that would have to mean you intentionally formatted it or put in a new one that didn't have the right files on it.

i am using clockwork. i've wiped so many times... but i can't make anything happen. and, i did format the sd card eventually, but not until a couple of hours ago... and only as a last resort because nothing else worked and i've been trying to fix this since last night, so i figured it couldn't hurt. but if that is part of the problem... how can i fix it? thanks for your response. i don't know what else to do other than take it in for a switch.l but if i can get into hboot... then sprint can too... and they will see that i'm rooted and void warranty. so am i completely screwed?
I had same issue.
I just reflashed the sprintlover rom (PC36IMG.ZIP) which came with Amon_RA recovery.
Then i installed the CM6 with Amon_RA recovery and everything works fine now.
Good that i did Titanium backup few days before
This is happening to me too. Almost everything he's describing is the same. Except I installed a gapps.zip and then it wouldn't boot after that. No matter what I flash, it either gives me a status 7 error and aborts the install or it may "install successfully" but it never boots. Also tried the pc36img.zip as well. I had a nandroid backup and tried to restore that, but that aborts saying cannot flash boot image. Tried a rooted and also an unrooted stock ruu, they won't work and the .exe version on a pc can't find my phone when I plug it in and power it on. Anyone have any Ideas for me. I can get more specific error messages and hboot numbers, etc. if needed.
I think you should get Amon recovery PCIMG zip file and change recovries and try everything again... IMO
Edit: I posted the Amon file and all you have to do is rename it to PCIMG.zip. Also I think the gapps you were looking for you can find on the cm site itself or within that thread. Sorry if it sounds like I a being negative but I see alot of people get on noob and I wondered why but unfortunately its because things like this happen. In the OP for CM6 it says to use Amon and backup your keys. Now if you get your phone backup you got to first check and make sure your RSA keys are in tact unless you backed them up already.
Joeykrim has a app on the market to check or there are numerous threads on what to do. Sorry and hope it works out for you if not INS is your friend

Yea but have you tried Amon and from what I read and this is from developers Amon has a much better handle on things as far as backing stuff up, partitions and protection of keys.
I ran Clockwork on my wifes phone because to me its simple and works with Rom manager but after a while I just said F it and switched since it was messing up my backups. Hey to each his own..
Ok, I don't believe that your device is bricked. You may have flash the wrong gapps or something, but is should be easy to fix.
First, download these 3 files and put them on the root of your SD card:
Cyanogen 6 stable for evo
Latest gapps for HDPI
Calkulin's format all
Red through first, then follow my instructions EXACTLY:
1.) Boot into recovery.
2.) Flash Calkulin's all format. This will wipe everything that needs wiping. (everything but the SD card)
3.) Without exiting recovery immediately flash the CM6 .zip. Do not flash the gapps yet.
4.) Reboot the device now. It will boot into cyanogen, but will not have market or anything. Once fully booted, reboot to recovery.
5.) Do not wipe or anything, just flash the gapps HDPI.
6.) Boot the phone and enjoy.
Evo won't load any roms, can only get into clockwork recovery
Okay, so if I try your steps, just like before The install gets almost to the end, then I get:
"assert failed: write_raw_image ("/tmp/boot.img","boot")
E:Error in /sdcard/update-cm-6.1.2-supersonic-signed.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Sorry Playya, I wanted to try this one more time first. I'm going to try loading Amon Ra now. do I need to rename it to pcimg.zip or should i just flash the current file name?
In case it helps anyone, I have

it may say oops if you battery level is low... I think Amon is so much better its just that Unrevoked puts Clockwork in with their root so people get lazy and leave it in... Amon - its the way to go.
1. Charge your battery and try again
2. Backup your wimax keys - then check how big the file is and hopefully its like 12 megs... If so keys may be ok

The fastest way, assuming that you have an external SD card reader and can put this file on your SD from your computer is the following:
Download This : TMobile Update Thanks to BeachHead for modifying it.
Once downloaded rename it to Update.zip.
Place in root of SDCard.
Hold the volume down button and turn the phone on. Press in the corner to get into the recovery mode. On the options select the update.zip. Let the process begin. The file is modified to not check for things. This will reload all of the firmware as well as the system. After that is done, do a factory reset. Your phone should now boot to 2.2 . If this does not work let me know and I'll do the more involved guide.

Argh - HELP
I flashed the SBF 2.2 BOOT and it booted to the T-Mo screen which is where it is currently stuck. I'll give it a few minutes.
I got where you are at now. Download this SBF and flash it. http://www.multiupload.com/ZZ4TU8W7UQ
Its is the earlier leaked TMobile build. Once you have flashed this root your phone and install clockwork. Let me know when all of that is done. I should be done with dinner by then and can help the rest of the way. You will need the zip file I posted earlier as well as the 2.2 nandroid backup. Leave the Update.zip in the root of your sdcard, and put the nandroid backup in the apkrev folder on the sdcard. Once those are in place, boot into clockworkmod. Wipe system and cache. Then do a restore of the 2.2 Nandroid. Do not reboot yet. Now apply the update.zip. Do not reboot yet. Now do another system wipe. Now reboot the phone. You should be all set to go.
Dude it was actually fine. It loaded up and worked perfectly, I have FroYo and you are the man! Now I have a camera problem.

I would try a reset to fix it. Many have had camera issues and that seems to be the fix.
Nothing.... What were the camera issues others had? I just get black, no matter what.

YES!!!!!!!!!!
You have to boot the right firmware. I realized that last night. You need to get that update.zip file to run and bring the proper firmware inline with the system image. I was screwing around last night playing with the different combos, and discovered that it wasn't mapping resources right. I lost use of my SD card.

Did you see my post about firmwares......the 2.2SBF is slightly older than the new rom. I suspect mappings have changed...update and see if that fixes it.

[QS] How do you install a ROM on Evo4G?

Hi Guys, I hope I don't get flamed for asking this but how do you install a custom ROM from this website on Evo4G? I have downlaoded the ROM and also the ROM manager but when I go in the ROM manager and browse to the folder on the SD Card where I have copied the un-zipped version of the ROM files, it never lets me select anything.
Please help.
Without being rude, just Google "how to flash a Rom on evo 4G". There are links to threads here as well as other sites. If youre not the kind of person who's used to researching this stuff first I'd recommend staying away from flashing and XDA.
You don't want to unzip the ROM
Weird as it may seem, the Recovery flashes (installs) files in .zip format, it's just the way everything works on android.
Hey,
Make sure you search before you post, that being said if you need to download the rom and put it on your micro sd card! DO NOT unzip! you need to flash the zipped file!
That being said if you are using rom manager go to install zip from sd card chose the file! make sure you wipe the data cache and dalvik and hit okay and let your phone do its thing from there! during this process leave your phone alone and come back to it after it finished flashing and reset! and at any point of the process NEVER take out your battery!
Good luck and happy flashing!
I hope I helped If I did please hit the thanks button!

Thank you both. That was indeed the missing piece, do not unzip the ROM! Let me give it a shot.
SMH are you even rooted? First you need to root your device Google "root evo 4g xda (insert hboot version here)" then Google "Amon RA evo4g xda" then backup your current rom then wipe everything except SD card and batterystats in amon RA wipe menu, go back to main menu to install zip from SD locate your zipped up rom and select then select to install then reboot and profit

[Q] Unroot before OTA?

Hey guys,
So I have a rooted phone but everything else is stock, so I'm wondering if I need to unroot before I do the OTA. If I don't, do I need to re-root it after the OTA?
I wouldn't bother unrooting...entirely unneeded...unless you feel like going through the process.
I did mine in about five minutes, using the official sprint update zip that was pushed down to my phone. I've used this method since my EVO OG days and it seems to work very well for my phone...for whatever reason. Some folks have no problem with my method, some folks don't have much luck. Caveat Emptor.
Here's what I did as a synopsis:
**NOTE!!!! I have CWM Recovery v6.0.1.2 on my phone.**
1. Went into Root Explorer and moved the update zip file out of /cache to my external card.
2. Shut down my phone completely.
3. Boot it up holding home+volume up+power until the first flash on the screen, then release. This puts you in CWM Recovery.
4. Flash zip file, and choose your external sdcard and browse to your update zip that you moved in there via Root Explorer. Go ahead and install it. It should only take about a minute or two...it's a small update.
5. After it has completed, go back in the menu, wipe the cache directory, go to advanced and wipe the dalvik cache.
6. Choose to reboot your phone - CWM will WARN YOU that the recovery will be replaced, do you want to fix? Say yes. CWM will WARN YOU that root access may be removed, do you want to fix? SAY yes! (When someone asks if you're a God...you say YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! - sorry...i had to)
7. The phone reboots and you'll see so many android elements being upgraded or optimized. It takes a minute or two.
8. Now that you're in your phone, verify the versions, make sure your root programs work (they should), and enjoy!
This process literally took me five minutes while I was cooking dinner...easy peasy. Not sure if other recovery versions of CWM or other software recovery packages will do exactly what I was able to do. But it's a very easy process for me. On my old OG, I'd had to restore root after the first reboot...kind of sloppy, but got the job done easily enough. This version of CWM Recovery knows that something has been adjusted and will fix it before you really reboot the system. That's slick.

I can't try that since my external card has become unmounted somehow... But would I still be able to update without un-rooting?

I did not UN-Rooot first!
If you have the stock recovery you can update via OTA, BUT you will have to re-root when you are done.
Thats what I had to go through anyway.
Moved to stock recovery. Run the OTA update then RE-Root.
I have a post someplace that explains what I went through in slightly more detail.

What file is the update.zip loacted in. I found this file in the cache named ac3e74a5a71c.update_SPH-L710_LJ7_to_MA6.zip, is that it. Thanks
You WILL lose root when you update, but it will update as long as you are on a stock rom with stock recovery. To make things easier, install Voodoo OTA rootkeeper and use it to back up root before updating. Then all you will have to do to re-root is restore root using Voodoo.

Yes, it's in /cache. I was thinking that, but my fingers didn't get the memo to type it. My bad. When Sprint downloads the patch to your phone, that's where it goes. I do the update manually, so I move it off to external card.

You could save the file to /sdcard if you wanted...being that you're not formatting it or wiping it, you should be fine putting it there. Hell...you could leave it in the /cache directory if you really wanted to, however I like moving it out before I flash it.

This method doesn't seem to work for some folks...for whatever reason. It doesn't effect anything as the file won't flash, so if you want to upgrade CWM, yeah, give it another shot.

I don't have a walk through as during my initial root process, I ended up directly on CWM 6.0.1.2. However, a quick search here on XDA seemed to indicate ROM Manager was the easiest way to upgrade CWM versions. http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
You may want to search around to see what you find out.

Yeah, that seems to be the error for folks who can't update via my method...odd. Check this...Skunkape is gracious enough to post instructions and his way to update is fairly bulletproof. http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-galaxy-s-iii/257471-your-way-update-mb1.html

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to say I used this method to update to MD4.
I am rooted CMW moved the OTA file to SD card and followed these steps.
Did not lose root and have multi window on my GS3.
Thank you.
