Voodoo mods for Galaxy Nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi everyone!
I feel the need to create a post here as my mail & twitter accounts are filled with "Please support Galaxy Nexus" requests, pressuring me everyday.
My goal here is not to generate expectations or start teasing but to give answers I can give.
So!
What I'll do and what I'll not do on Galaxy Nexus:
Won't do:
Voodoo Sound:
Yea, I know, I said a few weeks ago I might add Galaxy Nexus in Voodoo sound but eventually that won't be the case for several reasons.
- Galaxy Nexus audio quality potential is good but not quite as good as what I target.
- Galaxy Nexus audio codec, TI TWL6040 has no DSP, which means:
Parametric EQ
Stereo enhancements
Advanced recording presets using Dynamic Range Compression
Using hardware: those cannot be done.
Its the signature and exclusive features of Voodoo Sound and what matters to me.
I know devices with WM8994 tend to become old compared to the latest generation but I don't care.
Sound quality stay just as excellent and class-leading, that's what's important no matter how many new devices are released each week.
Will do:
Voodoo LOUDER:
That's why I created this different app, in order to host useful audio mods/hacks even if they don't reach the quality and features I require for Voodoo Sound.
Things I'll implement here:
- Analog headphone amplifier control, with perfect OS integration and automatic optimal setup for the best audio quality results.
If there are a few dB left to squeeze at maximum output level, the biggest interest here is the opposite: with optimizations for sensitive headphones & in-ear.
I'll implement a few more things but you'll see it by yourself.
Where there will be no compromise, its about usability, seamless experience, automatic optimal settings and most importantly no custom kernel requirements (only root)
This is why it require more work (and more time) than random hacks but eventually its of course worth it as I'm sure it will become one of the app you'll use daily.
Wi-fi screen-off fix:
Wi-fi is terrible with several routers (loosing every packet as soon as the screen turns off) and that has to be fixed.
I started working on it as well but as usual, I target a patching & flashing free solution.
Too soon to comment:
Screen color rendering customization and calibration − long term project unifying most Super AMOLED and LCD Samsung flagships.
General
- no ETA. It's done when it's done.
- Don't count on anything before it's actually released. Some part can be very challenging due to constrains (compatibility, no flashing) and might be impossible, or possible, or take months.. I'm sure you see what I mean
I say that because if the devs I try to publish look like simple apps, they depend on crazy hacks, doing things not how it was supposed to. So there's always research and challenges behind and it the outcome can be better but also worse than expected.

You're asking about speaker or earpiece during call, right?
Because in its stock configuration it already has one of the loudest headphone output level on market.

headphone out, bluetooth and earpiece are fine, its the speaker that's lacking. my lg optimus p500 is louder, im using volume+ right now to make the speaker louder but even with the max volume boost it not even as loud as my Atrix without any mods.

No DSP! Seriously! Texas Instruments were the first (ever) to produce a DSP and the didn't implement one in their OMAP 4 platform? I find that hard to believe.
What I most miss from the Nexus S with VoodooSound is the awesome stereo crosstalk. I don't suppose you can do something about that...
Other then that the TWL6040 is already pretty damn good IMO.
We appreciate your work and hope for further releases.

I quote any word. Headphone is very low. i'm using volume+ at 15 level, but even with this dangerous level call, media audio is not even as loud as other devices.
Supercurio for me you must concentrate on headphone.

i am using aokp and headphone output is very high.. listening at only 1/4 volume with my westones.

On my Fascinate I could use DSPManager to mess with the sound effects when streaming bluetooth audio.
Will that not be possible on my GNex? If so, HUGE bummer. Im not sure if that had anything to do with Voodoo Sound on the Fasci or if DSPManager just isnt working correctly in ICS yet.

[Q] Beats Audio

Okay, I guess this is more of a request, really, but I was wondering if porting Beats Audio was possible? I've seen it be ported to other HTC devices but I was wondering if it can be done to the Nexus. I mean all it is is code isn't it?
I was never fond of how Beats Audio would make the phone's audio quality better. Even phonedog says that Beats Audio is a gimmick,
But, the big “unfortunately” comes in the fact that Beats Audio is nothing more than a gimmick and one that’s not as versatile as it should be. The headphones are great, though – can’t count those out.

Beats Audio is overpriced and there are far more superior companies who offer better quality such as Sennheiser. If anything I'm more excited for Voodoo Sound but I don't think thats possible because the GN doesn't use a Wolfson Audio chip. Voodoo Sound is simply amazing and the difference is significant. Supercurio (dev of Voodoo) has a GN and is working on porting Voodoo Sound to the NS, so we might see some things from supercurio for Voodoo-related tweaks.

Well I ask because I have the Solo HD beats and I am super jealous that iPhone users and Rezound users can use the buttons that come on the cable. Though I have used voodoo sound on my Transformer and that is definitely a worthy consolation.
I just really like the ease of pressing the buttons instead of pulling out the phone from my pocket every time I want to do something, music-wise.

Yeah, I'm not 100% sure what "Beats Audio" actually do, I know they make headphones but I'm not 100% sure what they do on the software side.
But from the looks of it, it looks like it just adds functionality to bind the "buttons" on your headphones to skip / pause / play songs?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the button functionality and a slight bass boost are the only things in beats audio but if someone could get this done and voodoo I will probably use my GNex for life lol
Beats are overrated, get the Klipsch Image S4A in-ears that are made for Android.
just download Equalizer from Market. you can set your global EQ to be just as good/better as the 'Beats Enabled' EQ setting from the Rezound.
that and on the Rezound, Beats Audio only worked via the default Music app.
Volume+ has beats emulation. i tried it and it sounded pretty damn good, but i turned it off since anything above +4 sounded really bad and i want my phone really loud, i have it at +9

Galaxy Nexus Audio

The question I have is specific to the Bass Boost feature.
When raising the level on the Bass Boost setting, shouldn't it increase the bass and not decrease it? .. I would think that using it in conjunction with the equalizer would yield awesome results but it just completely blows.
I've tried several options, Music FX (stock), Equalizer, Volume+ and DSPManager.
All act the same.
I come from a Nexus One where I used DSPManager through CM7 roms. The bass boost setting would actually BOOST the bass. Now, it just seems to lower the sound output level and doesn't really affect the bass in anyway at all.
I'm sure Im not the only one who sees this problem.
Is tehre a fix for this or is there something that I can do to help with this?

ICS Music player has some problems, Bass Boost is one of them. It is working in reverse and the higher you put it up the more bass it cuts off. Don't use it if you need more bass.
Install another player with more control over EQ, bass, treble and cross bleed (poweramp, for example). I have been testing different players with some audiophiles and we are very impressed with the Galaxy Nexus! No noise or hiss.
Supercurio tested the Galaxy Nexus with analog headphone amp gain and it became totally black even with very sensitive in-ears!
i use volume+ with poweramp and it's awesome makes my $10 earphones sound like a $300 pair

I am not sure I need voodoo...seriously though,I totally lived on voodoo on my galaxy s and my transformer ,but the galaxy nexus sound chip blows everything out of the water....I fall in love with it and my klipsch s4 every morning!

I completely agree.
The Galaxy Nexus is a superb audiophile phone. When I plug my sennheisers and touch the play button (Poweramp, of course), the only thing I can say is WOW!
Not sure I agree with it being an audiophile phone, but it gets by. If you really want better bass, buy an external headphone amplifier (under $40) with a bass boost circuit. This may be more than some headphones can handles depending on the material. You can do lots with the built-in EQ on Winamp and Poweramp, though.

Galaxy Nexus sound improvements are here!

As most of you might already know the GN uses the TWL6040 DAC. It's performance is very good but it could be better. It can't compete with VoodooSound found on the Nexus S.
While we are awaiting for sound improvements from Supercurio, the awesome developer of VoodooSound, you guys might wanna check this app out.

For those of you that don't know what a AlsaMixer is - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsamixer
Once you install the app. open it and scroll down to TWL6040 Power Mode
and write High-Performance in the box then hit OK.
To increase the Headphone volume scroll down to Headset and write in the box 14 or 15 depending how loud you want it.
Also these volume settings seem to revert to the original once you pause the music so increase the volume while playing music and enjoy.
Would appreciate any input on how to make these setting stick.

Going from Low-Power to High-Performance should definitely increase the sound quality.
As far as Bass is concerned you are free to use the built-in software EQ. It's not as good as supercurio's hardware Bass implementation but it's all we have. Also there is DSP manager from CyanogenMod 9.

The bass from my Nexus is making me deaf, I kid you not.
Using DSP manager and a pair Klipsch X10, I'm getting insane bass.
Hmmm well headset level 14 seems to be exactly the same as stock and 15 does increase it a bit but can't compete with voodoo sound.

I'm not sure what headphones are you using but for me 14 is definitely louder then stock while 15 would probably damage my ear drums

Haven't tried for speaker. Still looking into it.
I think Volume+ is the best...actually makes the speaker louder and higher quality depending on the settings used. I'll try this to see how it is though.

I guess you've never used voodoo sound. Probably shouldn't bother then since you think this can damage your ear drums. I use Klipsch image S4A headphones. My Fascinate is the only thing that can put them to their limit.

You're kidding! I barely decided to upgrade from my Nexus S with VoodooSound cause I didn't know how the Galaxy Nexus would sound. On my (late) Nexus S I never increased the VoodooSound HP Amp past 0 dB. And the GN set to 15 it's past that.
How loud do you want it?
I think stock is below level 10. And level 11 is comfortably loud enough for me (using Sony NUDE-EX earbuds). 14 is 15 are insane levels for sure, but probably necessary with big-ass power-hungry headphones.
Thanks MFire for the tip. This indeed a good experiment that shows the potential of our device. This means supercurio might help us out here for a permanent fix (I hope so)
Overall, I find the external speaker is the one that needs alot more improvement rather than the headset.

What you want in a DAC is for the audio to be EXACTLY the same as what was recorded. You want bit transparency, and you want the music to sound exactly as the musician intended it to be.
Adding in DSPs, and adding "more bass" pollutes the sound if you ask me. Is that what voodoo is doing??
The default for headphone is '9', it tells you when you want to change it.
Thanks for the find though! This would have to do until Voodo Sound comes, only if it has set on boot that would be perfect.

NO! That's not what Voodoo is doing. It bypasses the Samsung drivers to assure the sound comes directly from the DAC. The bass thing is just off topic, we're looking for the clean sound that you described .

[Q] Music MAX volume is too low

Hi All,
I listened to a Note 2 today using my Bose QC15's though the sound quality (clarity) is way better than my Note 1, it still does not have the output volume of the Apple devices ( I have had to keep a iphone for music purposes). I'm quite disappointed. Running volume at max is just not loud enough.
It seems all Android phones have this issue. I have tired all kinds of software solutions with the GN1 but never got the sound quality or volume I desired.
Anyone with the note 2 found a solution?

The subject line really got my attention because just last night my wife and I were talking about how loud tgis phone is. Hands down louder than any other I've ever owned. I even had to lower the volume because at max it was blaring.

I've had no issues with the volume. It causes the whole phone to vibrate due to how loud it is. Maybe you have an option ticked somewhere?

if your phone rooted, then increase db value of headphones via default_gain.conf /system/etc

In any case, I'm wondering if this issue is related to Jellybean and all... Seems to be a common problem that is shared between various devices. 0_0.
I recommend to ditch the bose crap tbh. They're good speakers but dire headphones. Take a look at the Sennheiser HD range. I recommend the 598's or 558's if on a budget.

I'll try the volume boost app. I had tried volume + amongst others but always found the sound quality degraded badly.
The suggestion regarding the fiio amp, yes for my note 1 already have a fiio e11 which is amazing and can drive any headphones but carrying a GN1 or 2 with it rubber banded to the back is simply too bulky.
Getting rid of the bose qc15? I commute 3 hours a day, and fly regularly so the noise cancellation is a god send, I've tried many alternatives but never found a better solution.
There is no doubt in my mind that the note, both 1 and 2 are the best phones out there. Way more useful and fun than an iphone, I just wish Samsung would sort out the volume level through headphones as it is the one area which I feel is compromised.

You're wrong. There has been a port for both S3 and the Note 2. S3 was by Gokhan, siyah kernel and now the Note 2 by Andrei, Perseus kernel. It's script based

Samsung have put a limit to 55db on max volume, if want louder, root and change the limit. Or use sounds apps and boost the volume.
For me its loud enough, too high volume can damage you ears in long terms listening and either I got good ears. Or peoples have damage theirs ears by iPhones volumes already.

I just wanted to post that the above mod perfectly sorted out the volume issue.
Using the 57 values has made me extremely happy with the volume levels.
Now with the volume, quality dac inside the GN2 and a good global equaliser it far exceeds the experience of my Iphone for music.

The speaker is loud, and frankly quite amazing, but the problem is with headphone volume.
I'm using Sennheiser PXC450s and WMA files are not quite loud enough for me on max volume. Most MP3 files are loud enough, in fact max volume is too much. However this is with zero ambient noise. Sound clarity is very impressive.

Poor Music Quality

Just came from the S3 and loving this phone .....except for the audio. The sound is a bit boomy and not as crisp as the S3. Tried DSP enhancements on Player Pro but no good.
Are there any software mods or apps without root to improve the audio quality?

He wants crispness, not artificially added bass that distorts the actual music. Stop recommending beats for clarity. I can't believe how horribly marketed Bests is to the point where people actually believe it produces studio quality sounds. If anything, Bests will make the sound even MORE boomy, which OP says he doesn't want.
OP, have you tried Poweramp? Its a great music player, I find the EQ adjustments there to be better than DPS manager. You can use some of the presets if you don't want to manually adjust them.
What headphones are you using? It helps to know what you have this connected to; the clarity issue may be there.
I don't use my phone to listen to music, but I haven't had any clarity issues the times I decided to test some songs on it here and there. I already have a Rockboxed Sansa clip that's portable enough that I don't particularly care about saving space by having my phone play music as well.
Acid mod causes a few problems with audio. At least the one I flashed. It made my speakerphone button during calls mute them even after ending them and a reboot was required. I feel it might have been the build.prop edits causing this but I didn't bother checking.

See the thing is, its my OPINION!! I can recommend Beats but he does NOT have to use it. In MY phone it produces a really good quality without too much bass. Some speakers in some phones may be different. Sorry for touching a nerve on the Beats mod but its an opinion.

Doing some research for you, I'll test out a little myself. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noozxoidelabs.eizo.rewirepro&hl=en Noozcoidelabs seems pretty decent so far, but you may need a lot of adjusting to get it to sound the way you want it to. I'll test it a little more and give you my opinion on it.
Looking more into it, does anyone know what Beats audio mod actually does to the sound? I was under the assumption and previously saw it simply slapped on a pre EQ'd sound signature that gave the overly bassy sound the Beats headphones give out; but looking into it, it doesn't seem like anyone is really sure what it does other than "makes things sound better"
Anyone know what it actually tweaks? From a technical standpoint. If it's not just an EQ slapped onto your sound system-wide then I'm not sure what it's doing. I can try it myself to test how it sounds, but I'm skeptical due to Beats being notoriously bass heavy and the marketing technique being to throw out buzz words and use celebrities to give the illusion to ill informed customers that you're actually getting the best quality you can find for you cash. They do spent a lot in designing things to look pretty though.
Spoiler: Monster is the company that makes Beats, that same company that tried to sell you $100 4 foot HDMI cables back when HDTVs were coming out and becoming more affordable. They always do this kind of marketing to lure in suckers to buying their overpriced products that don't actually give the quality people are marketed to believe.
Edit: Still testing Noozxoide, it does a lot for sound stage, and clarity. Setting the Surrouundsound ES Processor to the highest levels makes it a bit off, but picking Studio or Studio II works just fine for it. Don't go too wild with the tweaks, keeping them at moderate seems to give the best results. I'm still tweaking around with it.

It's nice to have an opinion, but looking at it from a technical standpoint the sound produced from it can still be inferior even if you think it isn't. I'm sorry I touched a nerve on your opinion by trying to give the OP advice from a non-opinionated standpoint. Regardless if someone thinks a pair of $300 Beats cans offers the best sound; looking at the specs it's easy to see that they're outperformed by headphones that are at a fraction of their price.
If the OP asked for a sweet gaming rig and you told him to get a horrible GPU that would have difficulty handling many modern games; and said "well it worked for me, and the games look just fine to me" that'd be accurate as an opinion, but it wouldn't be accurate from a technical standpoint at all. You may find the 9 FPS to be better than the 60 FPS he'd get elsewhere, but it doesn't mean that it's a good recommendation. If I went against your recommendation, pointed out the flaw in why it was a bad recommendation, and then provided an alternative that would better suit his needs, it'd be pointless to backlash at me. Telling him your pre-built Dell works wonders for you in your gaming endeavors doesn't help lead him in the right direction if it isn't what he's looking for.
Of course he doesn't have to use it, but if he's asking what to use and everyone is telling him the same thing; of course he's going to give it a shot. I'm trying to save him some time by giving him insight into alternatives. If he asks what my alternatives do, I'll give him specific details so he can come up to a conclusion on his own.
Your speakers on your phone? Are you using your phone speakers to listen to music? I'm pretty sure the manufacturer is using the same speakers on all of our phones if we're all using the Sprint LGOG. Are you using the Sprint LGOG? That aside, you're most likely not going to get good music quality from the built in speakers regardless of what tweaks you do.
Although I did more research on the Beats audio mod after my post. It doesn't modify sound in the way I previously believed it did, but at the same time I don't know how it modifies sound, so I for now I'll withhold any thoughts on it since anything I say about it at this point will be opinionated. If it really did just throw in the Beats EQ signature system wide, then even if you think it sounds more clear, it wouldn't be more clear. Since it doesn't, I have no idea if what it does actually does improve sound quality anymore. Given Dr.Dre's previous track record with audio "enhancement," I'm skeptical to even give it a shot. If I learn what it actually does and how, I'd be able to provide better insight into it. I'll do my own individual tests on it after, but for now my focus is elsewhere.
See GPU won't change across the boards, that's invalid. Speakers on the other hand CAN sound different. My wife and I both had brand new iPhone 5's from sprint, my speaker sounded clearly better than hers. The point I'm making is there could be something physically wrong with his speaker because first, the sound quality on mine after using the Beats Mod (not the headphones) is clearly better. Comparing a piece of silicone (gpu) to a physical speaker is not a good comparison. The Adreno 320 are going to perform 99% the same on all the LG Optimus G phones, the speaker may vary upwards to 15-20% difference from what I've gathered by comparing a few of our phones.

Regardless, we gave our advice for the OP and we should quit before this turns into a flame war. I recommended Beats because it didn't just add bass and you said to stay away from Beats because of their popularity and the fact that they are too marketed and overpriced (which has nothing to do with the mod). But goodluck OP and try a few different mods.

I can't imagine what would cause such a discrepancy if LG is using the same hardware in all of their phones. The only thing I could think of would be physical damage to the speakers altering its sound performance. I don't see how comparing a GPU is too different. They're both physical parts manufactured with set specs. II doubt LG has a batch of different speakers they're using, or that their speakers are being made differently. I'd assume they're all uniformly assembled, with uniform parts.
If you're comparing headphones, you look at their specs just as you would for computer parts. A pair of Sony MDR-V6's should sound the same across the board unless you have a faulty pair. Any difference in sound between them would more than likely be caused by burn in rather than them simply sounding different despite being made of the same things using the same methods.
Regardless, you're most likely not going to get studio sound quality and clarity from the built in speakers anyway, so I was assuming OP was talking about making it sound better with headphones. Even if he is talking about the speakers, any changes with audio should affect the phone system-wide and be useful for both the built in speaker and external headphones.
I'm not trying to provoke a flame war, but I see nothing wrong with discussing the differences between audio modifications on the device. Debating =/= flaming, it's only flaming when the discussion devolves into what's essentially just a bunch of posters throwing ad hominems at each other.
Indeed it is up to OP to decide, but the best way to decide is to have more information.

With any audio mod, the output has to be tuned to the output device. You could have a $10K audio rig and if it's not tuned to your speakers or headset it can sound like junk. Even if it is tuned, your audio source has an affect on quality as well. Tuned $10k rig + 15kbps source = garbage.
Change the speakers/headset/source and the game starts all over again. This doesn't even take into consideration the environment or how everybody hears things differently. This still doesn't address that issue that not all devices reproduce sound the same and not all audio mods are created equal.
If I can find it, there was a write up where a Beats Audio phone was run through a spectrum analyzer. Straight from the jack or matching Beats headphones it looked good but try a set of Sennheiser headphones and garbage quality.
Which is why it would be better to have an audio mod where you can adjust and tweak things more to your liking. Using something that has a lot of options to tweak may be a little intimidating, but in the end it's the best way to get the most out of your sound experience. If you can find a spectrum analyzer that'd be great.
Edit: Looked it up more, it seems my initial assumptions were correct. Most sources are telling me "'Beats Audio' is a branded equalizer that boosts the bass, among other things."
Essentially this could be done with any EQ. If it's just their own bass heavy EQ thrown over, then that doesn't exactly boost clarity and may actually drown the sound in bass (listen to a nice piano piece with bass turned up and hear how muddy it gets). As of now I've only found one source that stated it does something different, but hasn't stated what exactly it does, while every other source points to it being a preset EQ.

Wasshoi, you are correct. The beats audio software is no more than preset compression, eq, and delay. All these combined alter the source material. These same settings can be achieved through any audio manager if those settings are available and adjustable. However, beats claim that it will be heard "as the artist intended" is a complete farse. In order to listen to music as the artist intended you would need to utilize software that gave a completely flat frequency response with no compression or "widening" affect which is created by phase cancelation and stereo delays.
As Loki said above, even with a flat frequency response in a device, headphones also have hyped or altered frequency responses (usually show on higher end head phone packaging). So if you bump up 5k by 10db to compensate for insane amount of low end on your beats headphones and listen to the same track on a different pair of flat headphones. The second pair would sound thin and tinny as a result of the increases level of 5k not because of the lack of low end.
I really love Ac!d v5 because the noxide manger that is flashed allows you to mix the affected signal with the original using a parallel processing technique that gives you the best of both dry and affected signal. However, i was able to get the same results with beats mod that Loki included in imperium 2.0.1.

Dolby is something they probably paid a licensing fee for. Just like Beats. Maybe the contract was up. That is just a wild guess though.

I installed Jellylifeless ROM that came with Beats. The audio is 10X better than before. The boomy went away with Bluetooth streaming, though it seems to still be there with 3.5 audio jack. No matter. I use the Bluetooth audio streaming and am satisfied with the output. Much better than the S3 now.
Have to say that I was never a big fan of Beats Audio mods on the S3. But this one sounds great.

lol im on lifeless n didnt even realize it! i have tried almost all audio mods on my sgs2 (before upgrading) and awesome beats/beats audio if n e thing made it slightly more clear (could be placebo effect) but second the person who mentioned nooz! its awesome. try it! and acid audio does have issues with certain devices.. and to the person that mentioned dolby.. its still lingering in some audio mod i cant remember right now. possibly sony xloud and clear audio soundmod with walkman player? could be wrong.. as far as without roit, i think there are a few (volume+) but they just make the phone sound louder by increasing volume but still stock sounding if not worse.. it does also depend in the audio file your listening to, your headphones or whatever your listening to it on and even the device itself
