Hi Im a haver sms user and I love gosms. Cause here its possible to get an pop up for the incoming sms and directly answer it.
How is the stock sms app integrated in ICS? Is it possible to get an popup and answer the sms as fast as in gosms? I would appreciate If somebody could explain me the sms feature of his nexus galaxy. Cause I couldnt find any information on the web. maybe Im the last guy who texts. Thx
i am afraid the stock SMS app has not changed much from gingerbread. generally just some UI updates.
MIUI's SMS app is wonderful. It has the popups you are talking about. From what I've seen, it is not too different from past Android builds.
Looks like GoSMS is your answer. I've also seen WM7 Notification Add-On, that provides the popups, available for download in the market. I tested it and it worked but I didn't like it.
I'm sure we'll have a MIUI build eventually also (whoo whoo!)
Hm quietly disappointing. I want to have everything in a consistent look. Are you talking about an sms app from miu or a completerom?

Sms popup works flawlessly. Used it for years and is perfect. Uses the standard android layout so fits in with ICS easily. Try it out, I'm 100% sure you'll love it.
Everyone I've told it to can't live without it now

I also used sms pop up. Skipped it as I switched to gosms. But the fact that gosms (more functional) is based on the android gui makes it once again interesting.

Has anyone had any success with themes with gosms? The colors just go insane when i try any theme and i've tried manually adjusting every setting with little luck. The whole app just looks like crap.
Looks like Google is getting sick of carriers and manufacturers messing with their hard work.

Fantastic.
At first I thought this might chap the asses of Motorola, LG, Samsung and (especially) HTC...but it doesn't seem to be saying "NO CUSTOM UI FOR YOU"...which is probably smart. Since there are many app markets now--an especially notable contender being Amazon--handset makers may not give a ****...though to volley it back again perhaps that would lose them any lawsuit insulation Google may (or may not) have been giving them.

Verizon tried that with the fascinate and an LG phone, and it didn't work out too well for them. , it seems like the future ui's will be limited to just a launcher and apps, which can easily be replaced with stock.

...so no mucking with the framework beyond what something in an apk and/or widget could provide?
I will pray that this is the case.
I'm not so hopeful.
Either way, if they got pissed enough at google it wouldn't be the same as the Bingification of a couple phones by the carrier--though that is always a (remote) possibility. They could use Google for default search (I'm sure Google would still prefer it), they just couldn't use GAPPS or put a Google logo on the thing. I'm sure you know all of this already...But, alternate apps are available and alternate markets exist....big ones, notable ones with big names behind them (ahem, Amazon and a handful of much smaller fish)....I think the only thing Google might bring to the table for their compliance is implied or actual protection in the WW3 of lawsuits crisscrossing the industry.
But, whatever about that tech-navel-gazing... I hope what you suggest is true. I read the article and got nothing more than "key aspects" of the UI should stay mostly stock, if thats cool....unless Google is planning on putting the screws down, which I pray they do.
Its about God damn time. Scratch touchwiz, sense, and MAP.

This doesn't prevent companies from using a custom UI. It only assures developers that stock UI assets are there.

What about device themes?
We have no desire to restrict manufacturers from building their own themed experience across their devices. In fact we’ve gone further to make this even easier. In Android 4.0’s API (level 14) we’ve added a new public theme family to complement the Holo family introduced in Android 3.0: DeviceDefault. DeviceDefault themes are aliases for the device’s native look and feel. The DeviceDefault theme family and widget style family offer ways for developers to target the device’s native theme with all customizations intact.
Formally separating these theme families will also make future merges easier for manufacturers updating to a new platform version, helping more devices update more quickly. Google’s Nexus devices alias DeviceDefault to the unmodified Holo themes.
source
so what this say is we will have touchwiz, and htc will have sense. but developers can call on the holo theme for their apps and the framework will be there.
Good, I'd love for it to stay vanilla.

Maybe I don't understand what the article is saying. Are they saying that places like settings will stay where as the dialer and contacts will be different?

Flash a theme in the xda theme section to get an idea of what a theme changes. Google has their official ics theme called Holo. They are saying this theme has to be used if the manufacturers want to have gapps.

I just have to go on record by asking...
Daneurysm, did i not forsee this (Google market and app restrictions) as being the strategy to enforce less manufacturer meddling in our conversation a week or two ago?
And that it would be subtle, and in baby steps?

not "used" its saying the theme must be left in framework for apps devs to call upon it for their apps. read the whole article, lol.

Ah, so they're saying "you can have your themes but leave ours there". That's a great standard of practice. I wonder why it wasn't always this way?

The thoughts on this is to stop the Fragmentation, and make it easy for app devs to have one app for all devices.

I personally am a fan of touchwiz 4+... what I would like to see is users given the option when they set up the device (IE when you enter google acct, etc) on whether to use the TW interface, or stock Android. I think that would be the perfect medium to satisfy all.

Is anyone using FlexT9 on the Nexus? I was having problems with Swype being too buggy so I figured I'd give FlexT9 a shot. It seems to work really well but it's horrifically ugly. Is there an ICS theme anywhere?
Mods, this isn't really a Nexus specific question, maybe it's in the wrong forum? Feel free to move it somewhere as long as it's in a place where people will see it
Try deleting any current version of Swype beta (and the installer), then go back to Swype's beta page and download the new installer - this will in turn pull down the new Swype beta. Nice improvement - new features, smoother and so far I've run into no bugs...

Just tried that. Seems a lot more fluid and I'm not having issues when I move the cursor around in the text boxes. Thanks!
Is this swype beta version expire like it constantly did with my Incredible?
Yes...this will expire, don't remember how long. As well as being smoother, the other features are cool too, definitely worth reading the release info and trying all the features out.
Back to being my favorite keyboard. Current wish list:
- Fix spacing after period
- Allow use of native ICS voice input that types as you speak instead of Dragon
- Skins!
- Add a ".com" key

This is so freaking annoying. Why can't they release the app just like normal? What's with this beta method that requires users to jump through hoops? Remember back when we had to actually request an invite to get a login?!

But yeah, I'd like to see this, too.
this is somewhat of a self serving post. I had a customer running a jb rom show me that some of my themes for Go sms pro weren't showing up properly. Could anyone help me with some testing? will compensate with some free themes. B-)

looking for people on stock and custom jb roms.

I've run into the same problem several times. Did you ever find out anyway to troubleshoot the issue or what may be causing it? RAM issue maybe? Some people say their screen goes blank, others says it turns a random color. Any ideas would be great. Thx.

GO SMS Pro Themes Jelly Bean
Hello!
I'me having a lot of issues too with my go sms pro themes. They can't be properly read from go sms pro now that they are installed into the folder mnt/asec by the play store in jelly bean .
This is the thread on google code for info:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=34880
Google is not going to fix this (they said in the google code thread) although it causes a lot of problem. I don't really understand their logic.
They change that folder without saying a thing and cause this mess. Then they say that the developers need to fix this path. But the really annoying thing is that because of this only who pay the app is damaged, because who pirates it has a perfect working app.
I've written to the go sms dev team and they seemed totally unaware of the problem. I've said them they need to add that path in go sms pro in order to have themes working again in jelly bean. But I don't know if they can or will fix this.
Google is really doing a big mess with jelly bean in some aspects. This is a really bad thing and needed to be disclosed with developers before making the change.
I'm thinking they will never fix this. Google say that the application need to be fixed (in this case go sms pro) and the go sms dev team doesn't seem to mind about this problem. All their themes now are Getjar "FREE" or in-app buy. So they really don't care about all the customers of their older themes or about all the other dev that can't add their theme as an in-app purchase.
Just a heads up, got this via email (I was beta testing the latest SwiftKey). I very highly recommend SwiftKey. Even if you love another keyboard, get this while it's free in case it becomes pay again.
Hello everyone,
Today, we're very excited to bring you a major update to SwiftKey Keyboard in the Google Play store, which includes many new features that are a direct result of your feedback. To mark the occasion we're giving you a gift!
Consistently, our #1 user request is for a wider range of themes, the colors and designs that enable you to personalize your SwiftKey experience. With today's announcement, we're happy to bring you dozens of new free and premium themes, which can be accessed in the brand new SwiftKey Store. This is a great way for us to invest in quality design and let everyone get the most choice with their SwiftKey experience. In today's update there are now 48 themes in SwiftKey Keyboard, and more are coming soon.
To say thanks for your support as a paid SwiftKey user, we're giving you a 'Premier Pack' of 10 new premium themes worth $4.99 for free! Instructions on how to get these themes can be found here.
Additional new features in SwiftKey Keyboard v5 include:
Support for over 800 emoji, plus a new emoji prediction feature
Optional number row
Enhanced Flow accuracy
Improved prediction engine
More languages
...and much more
To get this new version of SwiftKey, head to Google Play and update for free.
Also, from today, SwiftKey Keyboard will be completely free to download on Google Play! We want to take a moment to give you a bit more information and explain some of the thinking behind this exciting change.
We've come an incredibly long way these past six years, from two university friends with an ambitious idea, to becoming the global best-selling app on Google Play the past two years running. We founded SwiftKey to make it easier for everyone to create and communicate on their mobile devices, and as a company we're working hard to reach that goal.
This is why today we are making SwiftKey free. We believe this change is the best way to achieve our global vision for SwiftKey, as we can now reach many more people around the world without price as a barrier. That said, we want to reassure you that the SwiftKey features you have come to know and love will remain yours.
As a final note, we'll be running a Reddit AMA to discuss the new SwiftKey Keyboard (and anything else you might want to bring up) in the near future. We'll announce specific time and date details in the days ahead, and really hope you'll take part.
Thank you, again, for your continued support,
Jon Reynolds & Ben Medlock
SwiftKey co-founders

OT News: SwiftKey is now free on the Play Store. It's a huge update / overhaul. Check it out. You can add or remove number row on top, +/- arrow row on the bottom, as well as choose from one of five "key heights" for how much of the screen the keyboard should take up, among other things. Lots of built in themes too. Nice deal. </OT>
