I've been watching the Google IO and they said that we have updates for 18 months provided hardware allows. Does this mean we will get 2.4, 2.5, and so on?
If so, I LOVE YOU GOOGLE!
Ice Cream Sandvich is coming to our phone. I wouldn't doubt it, with such a huge userbase and the dev community that we will have it.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Thought this applied mainly to new devices although with the dev support this phone has I'm sure we'll see ice cream sandwich even if it isn't "official".
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Obviously, I mean without developing ourselves, as in an official update.
Thanks!
I don't think HTC will roll out 2.4 officially for this phone as it has been declared end of life so gingerbread will likely be the last official release for the phone. But CM8 maybe?
Its here!
i was actually looking around YESTERDAY and found this release... i havent tried it but it sounds like Icecream!... i would post the link but i dont have enough posts to give it... PM me if you want it

Yea it is and it's significantly faster than gingerbread 2.3.x because 2.4 is basically gingerbread for dual core phones
how exactly are they going to change ice cream then? Isnt speed all they changed in gingerbread also?
From what I understand ice cream sandwich is just faster and yea lol o and its not 2.4 that's still gingerbread

Because Its a google internal build it's not complete so it has bugs but it's good enough to run as a daily driver.

No, that's not how it works. The "agreements" (which aren't even baked fully) only apply to phones moving forward. The manufacturers did not include previously released phones in this deal. Now, HTC can update old devices to Ice Cream Sandwich if they wish, but the deal doesn't obligate them to.

So now that Ice Cream Sandwich has been revealed and SDK available for download, I'm curious (1) when we can expect ROM based on ICS and (2) ICS is button less, so what happens to our phones with buttons?
(Benefits of rooting is that we get updates sooner than manufacturer updates, true?)

It's still a process and lets keep in mind that the SDK will lead to ports, the source code will lead to true ROMs.
So that's still dependent on Google.

Will we get ICS... yes. When? Based on Samsung's upgrade history I would guess once the next android is announced, which I am sure will be jelly something. Look at the OG epic... samsung JUST released GB source code for it, yet still hasn't release GB for it. Basically Samsung lags behind a release when upgrading phones.
I was just wondering if there is or if anyone is working on a pure ice cream sandwich rom for this phone. I would love to have pure ics on this device. I love the look and feel of it it. I had it on my mytouch 4g and I am really missing it. Thank you~
Nope.

The closest are going to be CM9 and AOKP. Check the Development forum and you should see them there. They're pretty similarly progressed at this point; both almost daily drivers, but still have issues with video recording, YouTube and Flash.
Didn't know why blackangst just said no, but then I realized his name is blackangst
None are Daily's @ this time.

Imho none of them are daily drivers for me #1 call echo is horrible no one wants to talk to me ,and they tell me to call them back from another phone"$500 and imagine that, # 2camera and video are nice feature to have on a smart phone " you wont get both" ,"you will probably not have neither until cm9 updates".
and #3 good old phone freezes and reboots and those always happen when you need it the most.
So if you don't care about any of those issues flash away. If you do then just sit tight and keep a eye on these two threads they will probably be the first to bring you AOSP.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25273-aokp-hercules-may-10-build-35-404/ <---- Real AOKP the other is a port.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1621678 <--- probably will update the fastest. "no offence to Whithawkx but cm9 has alot more people working on it for the t989 Mr. Hawkxs has him and eugene, which is not two guys to be taken lightly They are both deving machines and two really great guys, but they have lives and families so devlopememnt may stop at times so they can be human
right now I am on Caulikins 3.0 my question is is it possible to have the voice to text feature from ice cream sandwich on a gingerbread rom? you know where it doesn't stop and you can keep talking and it will keep printing text? or is that just a feature built into ice cream sandwich?

I was actually talking about the speech to text on the ICS roms its so cool, you talk till your finished then click done. I was wondering if thats something we could port over to a gingerbread rom?
Why is everyone still so obsessed with gingerbread? Just use an ics rom if it has what you want.

I see everybody bashing on ICS in terms of stability and throughout my testing of at least 26 of the 32 leaked versions that I have tested out; it has been as stable (save for a few bugs) as EL29.

+99999 They are quite stable. Yes there are a few bugs, but i haven't seen anything "broken" in a long time. I've been on ICS since fb21 leak and don't think I could go back to GB.

Hey David, I use both of Calk's roms. How do you use the VTT in ICS do you remember? I don't know if that will port over but I'd like to check it out to see if it's possible maybe.
if I remember correctly I c s just uses voice search a different way, gingerbread give you a time allotment that you have to speak in. I c s does a different way and basically gives you all the time you want. and just to clear a few things up I love ice cream sandwich. but I want to be as safe as possible and not brick my phone. so I am just waiting for the ota to come out. so I am not bashing ice cream sandwich at all. I actually have ice cream sandwich on my daughters in my wife's phone.

I cannot get mine to work that way on Calk's 1.5 ICS rom. But about the only thing I use voice to text for is while I'm using the swype keyboard, navigation or a basic web search. It doesn't stay open there, should it?

Ah found it! It appears to somehow be integrated into the stock samsung keyboard only. It does not work in Swype or the HTC_IME mod input methods.
Edit: And unfortunately, I don't think the ICS stock keyboard will work on Gingerbread.
When the S3 eventually gets the Jelly Bean update, do you guys think it'll come with Google Now or will Samsung still keep their proprietary S Voice in there instead?
Not sure but it would be cool if Samsung kept both.

I would almost bet google now becomes downloadable within the play store when jellybean is officially released for this phone.

At the very least it will be downloadable here. I wouldn't be too concerned about wither or not you'll be able to use Google now since you already can.
I think once more devices get JB, Google will release it in the Play Store.
or I am sure someone will post an .apk and a workaround to get it to work
The latest version on FreeGS3 has it as an option to install. Works good
I uninstalled it for now, has some issues which will get better with time. If you install, do a nandroid, I couldn't find googlesearchbox.apk after uninstalling it.

I'd be stunned if Samsung removed Google Now from the JellyBean release later this year. No way Google will allow companies to strip out its main competitor to Siri. Plus, as mentioned in previous posts, there's already a workaround in place on ICS. I can confirm it's working very well on FreeGS3 0.8.1 as well.

I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean. I now have a GSIII running the same ROM as you (great ROM) and yes Google Now works on FreeGS3 0.8.1 but compaired to how it works on a Jelly Bean ROM I would not say it works very well. It does work, but no where near the same way it does on Jelly Bean.

It is so much smoother on Jelly Bean (on my Galaxy Nexus). I have not flashed one of the Jelly Bean ROMs for the SGIII but I might try one just to see how it runs on them.
Again it has nothing to do with FreeGS3, I think it has more to do with it being made for Jelly Bean and ported to work on ICS.
Edit: In fact I'm going to flash AOKP for the GSIII just to test Google Now on it. I'll post back in a few.
Edit 2: I forgot I ran my battery down to 6% testing how long I could go on one charge. As soon as it charges to 50% I'll flash AOKP.
OK, so I just got done flashing AOKP and Google Now works just like I remember from my Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean, silky smooth.
If you guys have some free time play with Google Now on an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM then flash AOKP Jelly Bean and you will see the difference I'm talking about.
