Home button launching clock? (Phone stuck in dock mode) - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Yesterday afternoon my phone started launching the clock desktop when I press home.
I don't know how it happened or how to fix it.
Running Gingersnap 1.21.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk

Bump cause I haven't figured this out yet.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk

I froze the clock app, home button goes home again.
I'm just irritated because that's not fixed, it's not running right and I don't know how to fix it. If anybody has got a clue what's going on lmk please.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk

Which Rom, kernel and launcher are you using?

Gingersnap 1.21...whatever the kernal that comes with it...the launcher is the one from gingersnap too, not tw.
I posted in the Gingersnap thread of the dev section too, nobody could offer any assistance.
Sorry I don't have more info for you, I'm just an end user. Thanks for trying.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk

Find your launcher in the app manager and clear defaults if its checked. This will reset the default action or launcher and hopefully ask which launcher you want to use. But I would look into getting a different launcher, like adw if thats not the one you use. The Cyanogen guys live for that one before ICS.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App

I agree with Steve. Try a different launcher as a temp fix. I used to use FTL and it was definitely fast. I enjoyed it for the time.
It isn't a fix, but it is a workaround. Let us know if it works.

My apologies for this semi-dickish response, but why don't you try and reflash the rom before asking for solutions? Reflashing solves 99% of issues and quite frankly, its not that difficult to do so. If and once you're done gone through the "standard procedure" for solving things, and the problem still persists, thats really when you have to post a new thread.

I am unable to find any launcher in the system apps, and I can tell you I recently cleared the "system" entry's defaults (to get tone picker working) and it had no effect.
I learned that gingersnap uses the default touch wiz launcher. I'm not opposed to using a different launcher, obviously I'm willing to flash new software to improve my phones functionality.
I don't know what launcher will improve my phones general performance. I would appreciate any recommendations.
Thanks for the help.

I would expect no less from an Aggie.
If your car had a single missing cylinder would you put a new engine in it? No of course not, that isn't fixing anything, it's the sole option for alleviating a problem available to somebody with no technical ability and a demonstration of ignorance of underlying systems.
Reflashing the ROM is not a repair, just another work around and a damn poor one because I would have to re set up my phone.
Since, like me, you're an end user with little too no technical ability with these devices please keep your useless comments to yourself. I'm sure there is some off topic forum you can use to get your post count up. kthanx

Well if its a ROM issue re flashing would be a fix if your previous flash encountered issues during the process and thus gave you problems. A re flash with property installation could alleviate the problem your having.

I'm certain it installed without issue, it was stable and without any errors for 5 weeks. The reassignment of the home button happened just a few days ago...and if I didn't know any better I'd say it happened on its own.

No, fixing permissions had not been attempted or suggested, will unfreeze the clock and attempt that.

Unfortunately I did try that and I can tell you that neither clock, digital clock, nor the desk clock have any default settings that can be cleared. Clearing the cache and deleting the app data for those programs had no effect.

Its a phone we're speaking of, not a car. We're not trying to replace the entire motherboard just because a simple application messed up the mapping of your soft keys.
Re-flashing the ROM is more times than not a repair not a work around as you say. Failure to clear the caches correctly or reset the phone to factory settings will often carry over things from other ROM's. As far as re-setting your phone to the way you had it before, thats precisely why nandroid backups exist, not to mention google backup.
I'm quite certain that I have a substantial amount of experience with mobile devices, definitely not to an extraordinary level but yes more than the average end user like yourself. Anything I have learned from these devices has been from trial and error and the compilation of the information already found here on XDA. Not once have I created a single thread inquiring for help regarding issues.
If you wont bother to re-flash your ROM then ultimately that is your decision.

Go to
Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications
Click the "All" tab
Scroll down to TwLauncher, clear defaults.
Hopefully that clears it up. Let me know

Also, can you post a screen shot of the clock it's launching?
thanks!

TWLauncher has no defaults you can clear. Clearing the app data did nothing.
Get this. I used ROM manager to fix permissions, it fixed the home button but after a few hours the phone started running terrible. When I rebooted it the home button launched the clock again. lol.
So it's still not fixed.
And on a side note, my wife really loves go-launcher's themes.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk

That is the dock home. Its supposed to come up when your phone is docked like in the car. I had the same problem on my first sgs2. For some reason my phone thought it was docked and it would always take me to that screen. And if urs is like mine, ur speaker will always be on when u answer a call or make a call. Someone had suggested that cleaning the usb port on the phone fixed it for them, for me it fixed it for like a day but then started messing up again. Lucky for me the screen stopped responding so a few days later and i had a warranty exchange.
Edit: Also if you freeze or unistall the stock clock it will get rid of that home screen, but not the speaker problem, and mine would also just randomly make that little noise it makes like if it was being connected to the charger so the screen would turn on. It would do that all day and would kill my battery.

[APP][PORT] S Voice for Droid Incredible 2!!!

All this courtesy the leak: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
For ICS ROMS ONLY!
Update: Most bugs fixed.
Link for S Voice Zip for Droid Incredible 2: [Dropbox Link]http://goo.gl/od4gS
Installation:
=========
1) Wipe Cache and Dalvik (don't wipe data, it will remove all your apps.) [RECOMMENDED]
2) Install Zip from Recovery
3) ??? Profit!
Alternate/Manual Method:
If zip is causing trouble or wanna do it without a reboot, copy the apk into /system/app/ and the library file into /system/lib/ and set 644 permissions aka rw-r--r-- for both files. Profit!
How to use:
=========
0) Set the Voice input as "Samsung powered by Vlingo".
1) Launch app.
2) Use the app once the introduction is done... Profit!
Known Issues:
===========
* Quitting the app before finishing the introductory setup causes FCs in subsequent launches. Only workaround so far is to clear app data.
* Now you can set personalized commands instead of "Hi Galaxy". But, some personalized commands (like play music) will force close the app, as the corresponding Samsung music app/Camera app etc. is missing. Can't help!
* You tell me!
CHANGELOG:
=========
[*] v1.2: Added the signed version of the app to fix network errors. Thanks to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662255
[*] v1.1: Fixed FC when setting personalized commands.
[*] Initial Release. Fixed FC bug by including a library file "libsvoxtts.so" present inside the APK at /system/lib/

BUMP!! Updated to fix some bugs
EDIT: Btw folks, this seems to be only a bloody novelty! I tried calling my friend by saying his name... It successfully recognized the command and the name.. But it took bloody insane time to actually make the call!!! If anyone uses this to improve productivity as "Samsung" says, they'll lose their job the very same day for so! Well, it could be possible that since it is not meant for our phone AND/OR since the SGS3 has a quad core Tegra 3 (and the US version will probably have the S4 which is very powerful too) it may work well on those devices and not ours...
Anyway, hope a more seasoned dev than me can step in and tweak it and improve efficiency.
I'll be logcating away today and trying to improve this app's efficiency AND iron out some more bugs!

Thanks for the report. The gallery doesn't force close for me. Which ROM did you install it on? And the server error may be a Samsung problem. Happened to me a couple times too. Or it may be an issue with missing libraries... could you obtain a logcat via ADB and I'll have a look at it...

[Q] Google Now Question with cards

Running MIUI 4.1 and loving it (huge props to them), but toying with google now a few day's and really liking it, I did something and now it's not working correctly and I can't find much help. I constantly had my local weather in my notification as well as local restaurants, then when I had the weather card up I swiped (not sure left or right) but now nothing is in my notification list anymore.
I can hold search, speak local weather zip, hold speak sports teams and get info, but nothing in the way of the top bar with the flower and the card info, just the little box of info.
I checked and web history is enabled, location services is enabled, I need to find that "opt in" page I think to reset it up.
Any help is appreciated.

Cool, thanks.
It's been around 24 hours so started wondering what the problem was. I've been asking over and over for my favorite teams as that is how it got added, so also asking over and over 'local weather' wondering if that will help as well

Just checking, do we really think it will just come back. Reading more (there is not a lot out there yet) but reading more I see one CNET post that talks about the cards saying "By default, it always has a card showing you the weather forecast for your area. " but I'm now at 3 day's and don't even have the weather. I have searched local weather, new your Giants probably 30 times a day trying to get something to stick, but the weather was always at least in the dropdown. The other thing I notice is that home page with the flower is gone.
As I said, I remember opting in, and did something to re-show that screen and since I thought I was done said No, but just can't find that opt-in or yes activate page. Location history is in, web history, etc. I just need that page shown in this image

HA! Got it! For all those that read this and had the same issue and my last message was 'if it was an app' so I stopped. Went to the market, and 'google search' screenshots all had that top image with the cards as the example. Tnx again.

Does it? I am using it with default settings so far but I know you can tweak how often it checks (like the weather you can say just the morning, evening, etc.). I am also wondering what 'battery use' shows. Mine has been plugged in so I can't verify what's really used, but back in the day spare parts was the thing, for you guys with bad performance, what does the battery show?
I am still new to MIUI rom's and see a battery calibrate, does that do anything?
Google Now icon gone after yesterdays update.
After the update for Google yesterday, the icon I was using for Google Now just vanished. As well, my cards got all messed up. I really like Google now and depend on it. I want the Google Now Icon back where it was. Any idea how to get it back. Google Search always pulls up a search. I just want to pull up my friendly little cards.
Suggestions?

I'm using nova too but I leave the persistent search bar setting checked. I like the search box at the top of every screen

I lost mine on an update, my fix was to goto the accounts (I have a few) and removed my primary one. Rebooted the phone (may not be necessary), then re-added that account, and when I hit the search icon was welcomed with the opt in page again.
google now
I've been using JB lately and when I used ICS I saw lately this google now thing. NOw that I use JB I loved it. It is really nice (apart of being tracked from google every where you go lol) it is ncie and help you every time I was at work and I was going to school cuz it showed me the traffic. Alos liked when I was in VA the other day I got off from a meeting and all I wanted was a beer and guess what? google gave me a list of bars right at unlocking my phone lol. but I found that it was draining my battery very fast!!!
if you wanna disable it you can disable all those cards and cancel all the syncing. That improves your battery up to 30% wow crazy!
or if you do not want to see it at all you can disable the services or uninstall everything about some google services using this app called System tuner. You can also use Android Tweak
Be careful using them though, if you dont know what are you doing you can create some "force close" issues and misfunctions on some apps. so be careful
hit the thanks button and let me know what you think

I restored the factory rom via Kies last night and updated today. Multi Window seems to work better than the hacks and so far smooth sailing.
May stay stock again since I can just disable bloatware via Android. But I do miss having in things so I may re-root of its safe to on this update with previous methods.

Because each and every rom I have tried has something broken in it so far. Mostly revolves around the s-pen or modification to the systemui. They are like buying a 4x4 truck for the one day a year you want to go offroading, at the expense of loosing power windows.
We have the option to add unlimited apps without flashing as well now. Just an option for those who dont want to play with the counter.

I did step two through step four. I didn't do step one because I am on the injected stock root rom. So far the apps are on my multi-window and working. No counter trip either.

Pretty sure he's talking about this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2056532
So then the consensus is no real reason not to update?
Thread posters also raised improved stability issues vs non-stock ROMs & cool Mods without hacking APKs or custom rom (multiwindow any app , nice..

Reasons not to update to Baseband version T889UVALK8 ?

NONE!

Because each and every rom I have tried has something broken in it so far. Mostly revolves around the s-pen or modification to the systemui. They are like buying a 4x4 truck for the one day a year you want to go offroading, at the expense of loosing power windows.

Ok Thanks for that. I just couldn't really see any flaws with the hacked version. But to each their own. You certainly are entitled to your own opinion! And I truly appreciate your feedback.
I like the hacked version better. Also I tried flashing the ota and I just plain and simple didn't like it. I was experiencing some quirky bugs. So I just went back to teshx stock n7105 rom where I'm completely happy.

Funny that you say that this device is giving you the feeling of more freedom from PC. For this device is a PC (Personal Computer). A Pocket Personal Computer aka PPC that is. Or what I like to call ("coin") it as a "Mobile (WiFi/Cellular) Pocket Personal Computer" aka MPPC.
There is long history with PPC in the industry. And Galaxy Note 2 shows how far PPC technology as come. Where do we go from here?
Enjoy!

Agreed I actually have called it a Mobile Pocket PC before in the forums & it can provide more freedom from traditional PCs because it is a PC that is pocketable hence highly mobile. When I tell people (after they ask) that I paid ~$698 after tax they say for a phone & I say no for a pocketable computer with phone functionality & that's what their limiting iPhones without carrier subsidy would begin at before tax http://store.apple.com/ca/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone5 & not to forget about their overpriced service plans instead of my $30/mo no contract plan..
I remember in 2005 being impressed by my HTC made Dell Axim 51v with Skype but this (not the artificially limited iPhone) really is an amazing evolution still delivering wows but I wouldn't mind stereo speakers & a built-in HD projector (or at least very compact projector attachment for the Note3 or 4..) if it is still so pocketable.
Also considering other Samsung devices like http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-ATIV-Smart-Pro-700T/dp/B0098O9TRO as I like convergence form factors & want a tabletbook but still need to research whether it is ready for primetime yet..
The reason I haven't updated is because I'll lose the amazing sound that pegasus kernel provides.
Also undervolting is nice.
I installed the OTA update to my stock unrooted T-Mo GN2 yesterday. Multi-window is nice but I have to train myself to actually use it now.
Observations:
1. T-Sam added a new Multi-window toggle to the pull-down notification bar toggles.
2. T-Sam REMOVED the Sync toggle from the pull-down notification bar toggles.
3. The reboot after upgrade somehow disabled my Sync setting and I couldn't find ANY place in settings to reenable Sync. If anyone knows where in the STOCK Settings to do that, please let me know where.
4. After about an hour of putzing around through every freakin' setting on the GN2, I finally remembered I had the Settings Switcher add-on app for Dolphin Browser and used that to reenable Sync.
So, my first question is: WTF was T-Sam thinking when they removed the Sync toggle? My second question is: Is there a free 1x1 widget or app out there that I can add to my GN2 that does nothing more than toggle Sync on/off? I've already found that ability in the Dolphin add-on, but don't want to continue down that path. I've seen several Settings toggle apps in Play, but none I've found can offer that solitary 1x1 Sync toggle to add to my home screen.
You can use Elixir 2 or widgetsoid.

D'oh! THANK YOU!
I completely forgot to explore the menus on the various Settings screens...

Samsung's Good Lock

Pros: You can almost get it looking like stock android (which is why i'm keeping it), Notification layout is nice.
Cons: Battery dies faster, Widgets/Apps Tray layouts are useless for me. Recent apps layout is worse.
http://imgur.com/a/WpoXB
Tried it......for 5 minutes i prefer being able to use samsung themes like 'blue and black AMOLED' theme. Good Lock does not have a black option in routine options
Hmm . I like it more. Haven't had any battery is issues yet.
Only issue i encountered is it doesnt easily explain Uninstall.
1. You can just drag drop the Icon from the AD to uninstall and
2. You cannot find the app in Applications to Uninstall
3. You have to go to settings and uninstall from there.
4. Once you uninstall, remember to Restart your device as soon as possible.
5. If not restarted, your power button would stop working and the only way to get it back is by a Hard Reboot (Power + Volume Down).
Hope this helps people looking in to this.
Other than that, had no Battery Drain Issues and it worked fluidly. Did find the "Ignore Repetitive Notification" that I dismiss without looking in messages Annoying and sadly, if by mistake I did say so for specific ones (Work Email and Whatsapp), it stopped showing the message notification all together.

Sorry, forgot the * on that. It was mostly visual. Coming from the S6e, the S7e is substantially better due to the much bigger battery, but with a Wireless charger at work, didn't see "major" drain issues.
Although, when the Power Button stopped working yesterday, I almost called Tmo and thought of returning before the Hardboot fix, as this is a System UI App.
Just wondering, did you have AOD on? I did have that off. Doubt it would make a difference, but the Good Lock is a Lock Screen, and since my Nexus 1 days, I remember them always being a Drain.
They just posted a new version and they took care of most of original people complaints, the only thing missing for me right now is the Quick Connect feature that it seems that the only way to get access to it is via Original Notification shade. If the fix this, for me will be a keeper, for sure, I've been keeping it expecting for an update and now I can say that they are 90% where they should be with this.
In general, a very good update.

I use this as well for my Samsung 4K TV! I actually find myself using it more and more lately. I've run around the house a lot while watching a program and being able to send it to my phone to view while I'm in another room is great! I recently was watching a friend playing a game on his TV, I did a quick connect while I was sitting on his patio with another friend, and was able to keep up with the story-line while on his patio. What's weird is that I didn't get any lag using quick connect but when I tried a simple screen mirror i got lag as well as quality downgrade that was very noticeable.
This is the only problem I've been having so far with Good Lock. That and the horrible app switcher..
For me I would like them to add a private mode toggle.

I want to be able to actually choose black, and customize more options such as the lockscreen and recents. I don't like the new recents but I can't leave good lock and give up the stock android icons and drawer
I can't find the app in the app drawer. I visited the Samsung Galaxy Apps store and it said the app is installed. When I clicked on the Good Luck app, the only option is to update the app. Can someone plz help?
Edit: NM. Figured it out.

It comes preinstalled on Tmo I believe (or at least it installed itself after a while). I am having issues installing the latest version of Good Lock. Phone keeps restarting and reverting back to stock systemui. RIP

That's weird. I just updated to the latest version and it's been really smooth with no issues that was there with the previous releases. Maybe try the typical uninstall reboot reinstall? Or if you disabled some apps that could be causing some instability.

Yeah, I installed the first version of Good Lock and it was fine. Uninstalled it shortly after until the next update.
There is no way to uninstall the app from the Galaxy Apps store; the only option is to update it. My Apps does not show Good Lock as installed. I've tried clearing cache, re-enabling all my disabled apps, rebooting several times without much success. I am not the only apparently as several others are having the issue and posting about it on reddit. Hopefully this can be fixed with an update. Don't really want to factory reset to get Good Lock working.
I have no issues uninstalling from my device. I just go to the app drawer tap on the icon and it gives me the option to uninstall. I see what you mean by not being able to delete from Galaxy Apps though

See if this works for your battery drain issues.

Here is the link to what exactly worked for many of us over in the S7E forum. We all had the same exact battery issues you guys are describing. Remember that the biggest thing is to turn off "all background reporting".

Has anyone tried this?
iread it everywhere "stop background reporting"...
but no instructions howto do it????
I tried it. So far, I see the huge improvement in battery. The phone seems to sleep now. I think the biggest thing for me was starting fresh. I wrote down all the programs I had and manually started from scratch, instead of restoring my backup (From a Nexus 6p.) Also, when I disabled programs, I only disabled the ATT stuff. I actually left all the Samsung stuff in, unless there was a duplicate Google app (Like Clock, Calendar etc.) I'll give it a couple days, but so far it's been a huge improvement for me.
I have heard that you don't have to factory reset to turn off the reporting. I recall someone mentioning it under the Google and Samsung settings, but I wasn't able to find it.

I agree with most of the points in OP's link.
I personally do not like the idea to disable cool features that sells the phone, like the Always On feature for instance. If I have to disable the whole thing I might as well just go back to iPhone 6 plus.
- Disabling packages for me drains battery more unfortunately, I tested this twice. Now I just disabled apps. Battery life is better this way.
- This helps tremendously in my case is to not use PUSH for email. I have 5 active accounts, only one uses PUSH, the others use Fetch every 15/30 mins. My favorite email app is CloudMagic, I like them for their cleanest UI, unfortunately they don't support Fetch, so I went back to Samsung Email (I'm not a big fan of Type App either)

Those slick bastards either changed it or moved it. It is exactly right there in that menu on the S7E.
There are other areas within the settings that also have options to turn usage statistics off. Both Google and Samsung has background reporting. I don't know my way around the Note menu since I don't have the phone so the only way I know to opt out is to do a factory reset and do it during the device set up.

Multiple people including myself had Android System usage go down to a decent percentage after following these steps. Some of us were around 50% Android usage and that dropped down to around 10-15%.
Also not using Google Now with location set to on helps a lot with Android System usage.
