i9250m vs regular i9250? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Does anybody know what the m designation actually means? Someone on craigslist reported this as the model number and I can't find any info other than it might be a canadian model (and why would that be any different than the regular pentaband gsm anyway)?

Honestly, I wouldn't put any thought into that at all. I'd say there is a 99.99998% chance that the craigslist seller just got the exact model number wrong.

That is incorrect. I am in Canada and our version of the GNEX is I9250M.
As far as I know the "M" is just a letter that is used to distinguish it from the International version but the phone is the same as the I9250.

The M is Canadian, but identical to 9250.
Got mine a week ago, changed it to standard yakju 4.0.2 without any issues.

There are 3 models that I know so far:
GT-I9250
GT-I9250M (Canada/Bell)
GT-I9250T (Australia/Telstra)
All can be flashed to AOSP Bootloaders, Images, and Radios provided by Google. I have not tested this as I don't have any of the region specific Nexus's.
There are no hardware differences, just tweaked software (specifically Radios)

"M" could mean multilingual. As in French and English.

I can confirm this, the nexus I purchased from Telstra directly is an i9250T model.

My old SGS2 is Samsung I9100M (from Bell Canada)

Well I just learned something new.
But it sounds like you should be just fine if you buy that phone OP.

Fido vs Bell Galaxy Nexus models
I just had the guys at Wireless Wave compare model numbers for Fido and Bell versions. Fido is 9250m and Bell is 9250t. Checking the specs on Fido's and Bell's websites it appears that 9250m is only hspa tri-band (850/1900/2100) while 9250t is penta-band (850/900/1700/1900/2100).

no way.... all nexus are pentaband

The guys at Wireless Wave are very wrong.
Bell Mobility sells nothing but the i9250M model. And I believe all GSM carriers in North America have the same designation, although I'm not sure about that latter.
As far as I know:
i9250 - International Version
i9250M - North America
i9250T - Telstra/Australia.
-> All of the Above Are Pentaband GSM Nexus's, and all are identical in every way other than software radio tweaks <-
SCH-i515 - is still a Nexus, but the CDMA/LTE version of the phone, sold by Verizon in the states I believe. Looks are almost identical, other than being thicker than the GSM version, but under the hood I'd say they were different due to the obvious.

Same story with the GT-I9100M; identical hardware, with Bell's garbage firmware, still stuck at 2.3.3
I have Bell I9100M and I9250 (presumably M). The I9100M ran the Bell firmware for a month... I9250 ran 4.0.1 for 20 minutes.

Nothing to worry about... all 9250's regardless of the letter distinction are Pentabands. Works on any GSM network worldwide.

Is my Galaxy Nexus SIM Unlocked?

Sorry, this question has probably been beat to death.
Is there a way I can verify if my Galaxy Nexus is SIM unlocked without putting in another SIM card? I don't have any other SIM available to test.
I got my phone from Telus with a new contract. The model shows GT-I9250TSDTLS and UPC is 629018066749.
I've read numerous reports that Galaxy Nexus in Canada comes factory unlocked. I was hoping I could verify before heading off on my trip, and making an unfortunate discovery.
Cheers,
jasphair
I'm not familiar with the Telus network as I do not live in Canada but it is my understanding that pretty much all carriers around the world lock the phone to their own network. This of course can be corrected by rooting then flashing 'universal' firmware on it.

I think it may be unlocked to Canadian carriers - I put a Rogers SIM in my Bell device and there was no request for a network unlock code - but when I went into fastboot mode the screen indicated my device was locked so I unlocked it using the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit. By the time I got drivers installed on a computer I was so frustrated that I chose the easy way.
you guys are confusing the locked bootloader to sim lock. they are two different things. unlocked bootloader allows you to flash roms, unlocked sim allows you to use sim cards from other carriers.
correct me of im wrong here but all north american gnex are sim unlocked. I've read here some people that have the UK gnex are carrier sim locked.
I'm pretty sure my Nexus is unlocked so yours should be too
All CDN carriers have unlocked GNs. A few countries abroad have SIM-locked GNs.
I don't know about Canada since i'm living in Norway, but if you get a new contract which subsidize the phone to make it a little cheaper they usually sim lock the phone.

HSPA is a UMTS technology. UMTS networks are designed to be compatible for mode-switching with GSM, but they are fundamentally different technologies.
If you take a phone that has all GSM bands and no 3G support, and you insert a Bell or Telus SIM, you will get no signal. Therefore they are not GSM networks.

To put the argument to rest, 3GPP Sepcification:
The term "3GPP specification" covers all GSM (including GPRS and EDGE), W-CDMA and LTE (including LTE-Advanced) specifications. The following terms are also used to describe networks using the 3G specifications: UTRAN, UMTS (in Europe) and FOMA (in Japan).

Bell and Telus do not have GPRS/EDGE networks created, hence phones are not backwards compatible on those networks, you *must* have UMTS coverage to have a phone conversation if you have one of their SIMs. This however does not change the fact, UMTS is a third generation GSM technology.

The quote says nothing of the sort. The paragraph you have quoted says that GSM and UMTS are both 3GPP specified technologies. It does not mean that UMTS is a "GSM technology". It is needlessly confusing to refer to UMTS-only networks as GSM. If a network does not support a GSM-only device, it should not be described as GSM, end of story.

Feels like an academia perspective.
To the average consumer GSM means that that it uses a SIM. Another example is the use of 4G to mean a certain speed, yet none of today's phones are 4g phones.
I guess the question is, are we discussing real world or academia?

If you like, I can keep finding references:
http://www.gsma.com/mobile-technology/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Downlink_Packet_Access
http://www.intomobile.com/2008/10/1...sm-plans-for-canada-hspa-3g-networks-by-2010/
What you are confusing is GPRS with GSM.
GSM is an umbrella standard that incorporates many different techs, INCLUDING GPRS/EDGE (2G) and UMTS/HSPA(3G).
It's the difference between saying that all poodles are dogs vs all dogs are poodles.
What you are trying to say is that Telus and Bell do not support GPRS/EDGE which is correct. They DO support HSPA/UMTS which is in the GSM standard.
Edit: This thread is getting hijacked and i don't want that. Believe what you will, I won't be responding any more in this thread.

Are there multiple versions of the Nexus?

Hello all, I've been doing some research, and I am looking into purchasing an unlocked Galaxy Nexus here in Canada.
I am with the carrier Videotron, that uses the same network as T mobile. I currently have a G2x.
My question is, what are the different "models" of the nexus? I know there is the GT-I9250, but are there others? (for sprint, t-mobile, etc?)
Thanks in advance !
Not for tmobile but yes there is a sprint model which is the sph-L700, then there's the Verizon, dunno the model number and then there is the gsm version which is the GT model you named.
If you plan on rooting and modding and so on and so forth get familiar with the model nicknames.
GSM - Maguro
Sprint - Toroplus
Verizon - Toro.

Worth mentioning that Sprint and Verizon is LTE phones, and the international version is GSM.
The GT-i9250 (Maguro) would work with my carrier correct, as it works with T-Mobile's networks? (AWS)

Differacne between differant models of galaxy nexus

Hi
So i am looking to buy a samsung galaxy nexus to buy a samsung glaxy nexus. I am just going to be using it has a ipod touch of sorts so it will probably never be activated. Do they all get the fast and rapid updates from google...like getting jellybean days after it was announced. Do they all have the same specs?
Thanks

GT-I9250 works on UMTS900, GT-I9250M doesn't (also network infrastructure dependent, logical that the radio could be different, I'm not sure), everything else is the same. This is why we say GT-I9250 is pentaband, adding the other four: 850, 1700, 1900 and 2100.

I don't know for sure where he had it shipped to, but would the Google Play store have shipped I9250M models to US addresses? If so, were all the phones they shipped to US addresses I9250M, or some were I9250?
@beekay201, do you have an I9250? Would you mind looking underneath your battery for the exact model number (and part number if present) on your phone? I'm trying to figure out if there's really any difference between I9250 and I9250M, and if so, how to identify exactly what model a phone for sale is. I think a lot of people use I9250 to describe I9250M phones they're selling, and I've even heard of people getting a phone / manual set with mismatched model numbers.

Telus SIII on Rogers?

Does anyone know if the Telus version of the SIII is the same modelt hat is on Rogers?
I went to the websites and seems the GSM frequencies are the same but was not clear on the LTE chip. Each service provider uses a different AWS and it is not clear if both are active on each phone or if there is a separate phone for each.

Yes I can confirm it will work fine.
Remember that you will have to UNLOCK it first either free manually (somewhere in XDA there is info), or paying Telus or paying a 3rd party. Then make sure to get the Rogers LTE Sim and also APN info specific to LTE etc.
I did see that telus was selling refurbished ones for pretty cheap.
Should be the same (i747m)

You can just unlock it and flash the factory Bell or Rogers software onto it (so you can have the appropriate bloatware lol)

Isn't the GSM Galaxy Nexus similar to what was available from the Play Store? I believe that version will work on Rogers, Fido, Wind and Mobilicity in Canada. Not sure about Bell and Telus though.
Hope that helps.

its a gsm nexus, so yes it will work.
you clearly didnt google anything.
I thought all Galaxy Nexus phones are suppose to come unlocked?
I bought/use mines from/on mobilicity, but its works on every GSM network so far that I have tested, eg. Wind/Fido/Bell/Rogers.
It'll work. Canadian carriers (GSM) use the same exact frequencies as US carriers. I know that Rogers, Fido, and (I think) Telus are equivalent to AT&T in terms of 3G ("4G") frequencies used (850/1900 MHz), while Wind and Mobilicity are equivalent to T-Mobile's frequencies (AWS, aka the combo of 1700/2100 MHz).
It doesn't really matter what carrier you go with with the Galaxy Nexus because it supports 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz for 3G (aka "4G"). It's pentaband; it's made to support all carriers in North America and most of the world.

Yes, I should have clarified. I expected it to work for calling and SMS but I was specifically curious about 3g/4g.

I already answered your question above.

I Use the Gnex here on QUEBEC WITH fIDO AND IT WORKS like a charm. By the way, I'm able to use the 3G with a descent speed, not sure about the 4G.
The only difference between the international gsm Galaxy nexus and the US gsm galaxy nexus is that the US version comes with Google Wallet pre-installed. Everything else is the same.

It will in fact I'm using an American Galaxy Nexus on wind right now.

For the [hopefully] last time, yes, it will work. They're all pentaband unless you have a CDMA model (Sprint, Verizon).

^^ That is about as good as an answer can get. I have a T-Mobile GNex that is on T-Mobile when in the U.S., Rogers when I am in Canada, and I have also used it on Vodafone in the UK with no issues at all, including data. It will work with all Canadian carriers as mentioned in the quote for phone and data.
