Woke up late today because phone died. Does WiFi really kill the battery this bad or did I get the grey triangle of death? I have signal where the phone was laying. I'm currently rocking AOKP and Frank (Turtle) kernel.

looks like you totally lost signal and the radio kept trying to find one
Wifi does NOT kill the battery that bad. And the GN in my experience and others too I see has excellent idle life. Something is wrong.
I have WiFi on 24/7 and have no issues. The Verizon phones are meant to have battery issues aren't they (as in ICS not liking them)?
I received this phone through Amazon on Monday. I can recall about 3 different times where I would be using the phone and have great signal and then all of a sudden I would lose internet connection. It would take a minute or so but it would come back. 2 of those occasions happened before I even rooted the phone. Yesterday, it happened when I was on a call. On all occasions I had at least 2 bars if not more when it happened.
Seems to be when the drop happens I also lose voice. Does anyone else have similar problems?
That's due to no cellular reception, not WiFi. The red under, "Mobile Network Signal" represents time where your phone had zero reception.... not to mention that your stats told you that you didn't have signal 93% of the time.

This, exactly. Almost the entire time you were on battery the phone was searching for a cell signal for voice and SMS, killing your battery.

I have never had even a remotely similar experience, it seems that if you were in the same spot that entire time and that happened, the handset may be faulty and you will want to exchange it for a replacement.

Yep. Keep in mind that when your phone loses signal it will increase the power to the radio in an attempt to find a signal (since that's the primary purpose of a phone, or so I'm told). If you know you're in a spot with poor signal, put it in Airplane Mode to keep it from searching (and thus draining the battery).
As mutelight mentions, if your phone is going from good signal to none without moving, there's something else wrong. Trying different radio firmwares may help, or it could be a hardware issue.

What's interesting is I left it on my desk. I get good reception at my desk (get 4G there).
I have the problem that after almost every text message I receive, I lose all voice and data signal, but it comes back within 5-10 seconds later. Very annoying.

That is also not normal behavior. Are you running all stock? If so, definitely seek a replacement.
In those situations, put your phone in airplane mode and turn on wifi.

I just contacted Verizon and Amazon (I bought the phone from them).
Verizon had me pull out the LTE sim and reinsert it. The rep said she did something on her end to refresh my line. I've been around the block to know that means jack **** but we will see.
I spoke with Amazon it was reassuring. If I keep having issues with the signal they will overnight replacement phones. If I keep having an issue with them I can replace them for another phone.
I love this phone so far with the exception of the problem that was stated so far. I already bought all sorts of accessories for the phone. But in the event I have to move on from the GNEX, which phone would you guys recommend?
I like this phone too much to switch to another brand/phone.
I ended up asking Amazon for a replacement phone. Hopefully this new phone comes without issues.

Good.
I couldn't come up with a phone I'd rather have than the GNex :-D
Just got the brand new replacements from Amazon. Same exact problem. After speaking to Verizon and Amazon, I'm going to replace the sim. If my problem does not resolve itself, looks like I'm going to AT&T for the Galaxy Note.
Wish me luck!

it could be that you lost signal and the phone was unable to get it back for some reason even though you were in a good reception area. Some of the radios that i tried had problems going from edge to 3G and would either take too long or not be able to go back to 3g again. i would try flashing 4.0.3 or a different radio.
Conclusion to the story.
I ended up getting the sim cards replaced. Same issue. I was even able to show the rep. Looks like I'm going to end up getting the Galaxy Note.
Thanks to those who replied and read the thread.
Sorry Verizon LTE. It was nice while it lasted (or connected) ;_;
have you tried different roms/kernels ?
try to switch it off of 4g
it definitely seems to be a connection issue
I had this exact problem with my first Gnex. Left it unplugged on the nightstand and woke to a dead phone. Same battery profile: No mobile signal and a steep discharge graph. My wife's Gnex, 6 ft away in the same room, was just fine.
Verizon swapped me a new phone and I haven't seen that problem again. To be fair, I've only repeated the conditions a few times, so it's hardly conclusive.

I got a Galaxy Nexus 9 days ago (along with a rezound for my wife).
I have been dropping connection constantly every since then (and I'm in a strong 4G area in the chicago burbs).
I had Verizon replace the sim card... but it didn't help.
Now they are sending me a new galaxy nexus.
They said that if this one doesn't work they'll wave the restocking fee and send me a new rezound.. I'm wondering if I should just go ahead an do that.
I'm worried that I'm going to end up being stuck with a lemon.
Is there anyone out there who never drops connection with this phone? I never dropped a connection with my incredible in almost 2 years and my wife's rezound has also been rock solid
UPDATE: I called Verizon and had them send me a new Galaxy Nexus and so far this one works flawlessly. I've had it up for almost 3 hours without a single drop on 4G. I'll update again after a few days, but this is a HUGE HUGE HUGE improvement. I couldn't go more than 20-30 minutes max without drops before and my phone would often show that it was off the network in the battery gauge over 50% of the time. So for those of you having this issue make verizon send you a new phone. It appears some of them are simply defective
I went from a rezound to the nexus and I'll say the only thing I liked about the rezound better was the fact that the signal was WAY stronger. I drop calls constantly now and my 4g is actually slower on the nexus... kinda sucks BC its a great phone otherwise

If you are comfortable with or if rooting isn't problem for you try flashing new radio like UGKL1 or XXKL1 or KRKL1. But actually first flash 4.0.3 based ROM and then one of those.
Yes other people also had problems with their connections being droped, but AFAIK 4.0.3 + one of above mentioned radios work for most of people.

He is correct flashling the UGKL1 radio fixed my constant loss of data.
I already tried flashing the leaked radio. I did not flash full 4.0.3 however.. Maybe I'll try that on the new phone.
Thanks for the tip
Sounds more like a busted phone to me. My phone stopped doing that after Verizon came back up from that last outage. My husband's Nexus behaves better as well.

That would be helpful if he were running a GSM Nexus, but if you actually read the OP, you'd see that he wasn't.
I had a terrible singal on my gnex (VZW) when I got it. I tried the 4.0.3 radios which proved a marginal improvement. I ended up reverting the phone to stock and going back to VZW. They replaced my SIM card which left with only brief occasional drops over long black outs that I was having before. After getting a new SIM card I updated the radios again to 4.0.3 and it works flawlessly (3G- I haven't re enabled 4G yet). I think this phone is amazing hardware and personally would very much avoid going to the Rezound. According to VZW, the phone should work but it has seemed to have some issues.
I'm going to turn on 4G now, so if you are curious about that PM me and I'll let you know.
UPDATE: Turned on 4G which locked instantly. I checked my phone a while later to learn that I was without service (data and phone) for 10+ minutes solid. Apparently 4G is the issue for me, at least at work. My signal strengths aren't the best here.
My first Nexus had this problem. Swapping the SIM card didn't help, so VZW replaced the phone. The replacement Nexus doesn't have the problem at all.
Star this issue and hope for the best.

I'm on my second Nexus and sim card, network connectivity is pretty bad. My signal at home is -100 most of the time and at a pizza place in the same neighborhood a few blocks away it's -75 to -80, I don't get it. This afternoon I charged my Nexus up and power cycled it at 6:00 PM. At 10:15, I checked the battery and had not had a network connection for over 3 hours and Cell Standby was at 57% and Screen was at 25%. I power cycled the phone again and got 4 texts sent to me hours before. Should I get a Rezound or a Razr Maxx or wait for a software update and hope that takes care of it. Any advise is welcome!
I got a new GN from verizon.. WAY better.. i updated the first post
I wonder how much better my battery performance would be if signal didn't sick so bad at the office.

A lot.
I usually lose 3-4% over night (9h) with perfect reception. Last x-mas I was at my gf's home on the countryside with barely 1 bar of reception and ~50% no reception: Lost 30% over night. Both times connected to WiFi.
I feel your pain... though mine is not as nearly as bad as yours.
Do you have the option to connect to wifi at work? That should help if it's available (and/or allowed).

I'm not the OP, but having WIFI doesn't help/hurt my battery life at all when the phone is idle. I also have bad reception at work (and at home), but not nearly as bad as the OP. Even with my poor reception at home, I only lose about 1% an hour at night with about -90dbm of service.

Not really all the phones fault. Your office is the main cause. My office gets horrible reception. I keep a charger at my desk...

Simple, but have you tried just disabling 4G while at work? I get 4G at work, but barely. This made the difference for me.
Battery life with great signal and hardly any congestion is almost comparable to wifi. During Xmas break there were hardly any people downtown Houston and I got almost 5 hours display twice with ~10% left still.

In that context, you're correct. -90dbm isn't the best of signal service but it's not equivalent to having no service period (per OP's 60% missing signal) But I'll disagree on the front that it does not help battery life if he's missing signal 60% of the time.
Case in point, I get absolutely no data reception at my mother's house. Phone itself is constantly searching for service which has been a huge battery drain; idle or not.
That 60% he's not having any signal, phone (and consequently apps that are also trying to utilize data) do contribute to a big battery drain.
Being on WiFi remedies that a bit.

Your phone is likely defective and you should exchange it.
I used to have high % of time without signal like that... then I exchanged my GN for a new one and it's got signal close 100% of the time.
Do you drop connection when trying to use data?

I tried that with my first phone... It made no difference.
The lady I talked to at verizon support was pretty open that there was a batch of bad GNs out there. Definitely no harm in trying a new radio.. but don't wait too long if it continues to perform like that.
The difference between my old and new phones are night and day. Old one would drop connection every 20 minutes (and usually more often than that). The new one hasn't dropped connection one time in over a week
Get the app called No Bars that puts your phone into airplane mode after how ever many minutes you want after the phone doesn't have signal. The app also has a setting to to automatically keep checking for a signal after how ever long you want it to. I used this on my EVO4G with Sprint but I don't think I need it any more with verizon so I don't know if it works on our phones.
It's definitely because of my office. However, I had a droid x that had better/stronger signal than my GN. I just flashed the 4.0.4 radio that came w/ Codename's latest ROM. Bars appear to be one notch higher on 3g, (0 bars to 1 bar). But the signal strength is exactly the same.
This is my first full day on 4.0.4 radios and my battery is fantastic. I was dropping 2%/hr. I seriously was wowed by how awesome its been today. Although, every once and a while, my phone does that.
Very pleased. The big drop was grooveshark steaming on 4G.

+1 for turning off 4G when you are out of range. Also I enabled the mobile data limit and forced several applications to restrict background data. For example, google+ was a major hog that was constantly using the radio. Also check applications that "check in" periodicaly, and increase their check in time. Words with Friends checks in every 5mins by default.

My nexus is a hw version 9. it had some hand off issues from wifi to data with the 4.0.2 radios. the 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 work so well i almost thought they could do no wrong. until i got my wife's nexus which is hw version 10. this one works fine with 4.0.2 doing handoffs just fine, but with 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 i get this weird signal drop every once in a while where the network goes away, the bars become a solid dark grey triangle for 2-3 seconds, then connectivity comes back and data shortly thereafter. anyone else seen this?
UPDATE:
i noticed the problem happened even with the 4.0.2 radio. also the longer the phone went without a boot cycle the more frequent the problem became. asked for a replacement and got a CLNR which is hw9 that doesnt seem to have a problem.
see post here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23621403&postcount=15
where are you determining what hw version you have?
the bootloader for one. also the about phone says it in the radios/baseband.
the version 9 reads 1515.09
and the 10 reads 1515.10
Got it. I have version 9 as well. I live outside of a 4G area so I pop in and out of 4G coverage quite often. Personally the 404 radios are working the best for me right now, switching between 3G/4G is pretty seamless. Though I cant honestly say I have had the device in my hand, screen on, and using DATA while it went from one service to another.
yeah thats how my hw9 behaves.
im parked solidly in the middle of a 4g zone and the hw10 just loses all connectivity albeit for just a couple of seconds on the 4.0.4.
4.0.2 works fine.
I'm on HW 10 and the 4.0.2 radios work great. No issues here and no problems with dropped data.
I am HW 10, 4.02 Stock.
And my GNex has been dropping data+voice every 5 mins when I try to use 4G. As long as LTE is off, 3G+voice is fine.
I also have tried 4.04, and same problem...and came back to stock 4.02 and waiting for OTA I guess..or that's what VZW tells me to do...
I had just mentioned this in another thread, but I haven't had the loss of call audio bug since my rev 10 device.
At the same time, my wife has a rev 09 device, and never had it. We are both on 404 radios, and I only drop data when in fringe areas. I never, ever, drop voice.
charlescom, dropping LTE does not affect voice.

Adrynalyne, that is what I thought until I bought gnex.
Check out this google issue if you are so lucky to have picked a good gnex out of lemons.
This is one of major flaws that affected so many gnex users. Officially titled gray triangle of death....
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24345
If you scroll all the way down, you will see all the screen shots I uploaded on exactly what a user faces as the voice and lte drops...
Thank you..
Yeah, I have never seen that before.
Weird.
Edit: Allow me to rephrase. I did have that once. It was a bad sim.
I have this issue. Stock 4.0.2. Have only had the phone for like a week and it is pissing me off
That does look potentially SIM related. The VZ phones do have a micro sized SIM card.
With posters reporting the same issue on multiple replacement phones, I wonder... was the same SIM card transferred to the next new phone?
At least at my location SIM replacement was the first thing on the list way before vzw even start thinking about giving out a replacement. And yes, I have been given so many SIM replacements you dont even know....and as far as bad batch goes.....why are there so many bad batches to begin with.....hahahahahaha...it is almost a joke. I am not even getting frustrated any more...i just laugh....lol
it was definitely not sim related. its my wifes gnex and i swapped sims with her. her phone gave me the same problem with my sim and her sim worked fine in my phone.
doing some more research, here is the findings.
my phone - hw9 - works flawlessly
her phone - hw10 - has problem
got a CLNR from verizon which is hw9 which seems to work flawlessly again.
interesting thing is the difference between the stickers on the insides of the bad and replacement phone:

there is a long thread on rootz about this very issue and the conclusion is that if u have this particular problem, its hardware, go get a replacement.
My data signal turned grey, I had no idea why, I restarted, switched ROMS, and still, the data is gone.
Than I checked the T-Mobile site and my data plan is gone, yet I'm being charged the same amount.
I'm guessing they detected that this is not a T-Mobile phone and disabled it, but seriously, why?
And I can't even call until Tuesday as its memorial day.
Has anyone had trouble with T-Mobile in regards to the Nexus and data?
No but I've had MAJOR data issues on my Verizon Nexus, the reception is garbage I don't care if its the phone, OS, or Verizon , its GARBAGE. My bet is that its the phone.

If it's anything like what I'm experiencing, your problem has nothing to do with T-Mobile; you're simply experiencing the same "data drop" issues that a lot of us are.
I've been trying different ROM/Kernel combinations left and right to see if I can get something that A) I like and B) doesn't have the drops.
So far, from what I can tell, it seems like a lot of people on AOKP are reporting this. Someone in their thread posted to flash the 4.0.3 RIL, but I don't know how eager I am to do that when other people are reporting no drops with ROMs like Slim ICS & LiquidSmooth.
EDIT: Hmm, looks like my data connection is perpetually grayed out as well. I wonder if something is going on?

Methinks T-Mobile has officially effed up. Here's what I got when I tried to open my browser:
You currently do not have data service.
If you want to access the Internet and your current plan does not include data, you must change to a plan with data.
If your current plan includes limited data, your data bucket has been depleted. [It sure as hell hasn't!]
To obtain data service, you can:
-Renew early if your plan allows
-Upgrade to a plan with data or a plan with more data

By any chance are you on a monthly 4G or other prepaid plan?
Because if so, I've experienced something similar TWICE already...it happens whenever my service is due for renewal..I'm on the $30 100 min unlimited text and 5GB web plan and even though I always make sure to add sufficient funds before my next renewal date, when my renewal date came, I got a similar message...it took a call to customer service to get it resolved...
the second time around I got a $10 credit for my troubles but it is still annoying as hell. The reps also said it was a glitch in their system.
Not happened to me and been running my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile for over 4 months now (and had T-Mobile for 1.5years total).
I haven't heard of this being a regular issue, and I feel like I follow T-Mobile pretty closely. I highly doubt it has anything to do with you using a GNex on their network, probably just a glitch. Call in and they'll make it right.
Happened to me once over the last month, rebooted phone and it was blue again. On AOKP M5 + Franco M4.
Grey bars means you are not connected to Google's servers.
No signal is NOT a result of grey bars.
As in, if your bars are grey you can still have voice signal and data signal.

I used to get 8-16mbps on one s and I get from 5-10mbps on my gnex couldn't be any happier

Yes, grey bars are caused by no data, not the other way around.
but its clear that T-Mobile has shut off his data for some reason.

Not so sure about that, I get the grey bars every once in a while, however I still have access to the internet. It usually turns back blue after a few seconds.

You can have data and not blue bars, it just means that you can't connect to Google

I'm guessing they detected that this is not a T-Mobile phone and disabled it, but seriously, why?

No. T-Mobile advertises bringing your own phone to use as a feature. I've never had problems - and I started my T-Mobile account with an AT&T phone, actually.
It's a glitch, it's rare and ridiculous that it happened to you, but it's not the end of the world. Chill out
I have been having real weird issues with my text messages, and I've been told that people called me, but my phone doesnt say so. Yesterday I got on chat with sprint, the said that they troubleshooted the phone and to leave the battery our for 1/2 hour and reboot, all should be good. I did it(after ##72786# to reset the phone info), and it worked for a while. I checked my voicemail and had 5 messages from missed calls yesterday. Today Sprint was supposed to call me back to see if the troubleshooting thing worked, I checked my voicemail, and sure enough, I missed their call. So today they told me that they were updating towers...blah, blah..lte....., blah, blah.....fixed by the 11th. I got to researching and found this: http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/92214?tstart=0
I also got a $10 credit
Just putting it out there. If anyone else is having issues, please post.
Edit: here is another one http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/441250#441250
I live in baltimore MD and between them updating the towers and that storm coming through last friday and damaging there towers service has been pretty bad as of late

I had a similar issue yesterday. I rebooted my phone because I though it was strange nobody texted me all day(someone usually texts me) then right after it boots the notification sound goes crazy haha missed 20ish texts D:
First time its happened to me, will see how today goes. Besides that signal is fantastic.
My signal is fine, the phone just doesnt receive anything, or will receive multiple copies of the same text. They said that towers are being updated in Boise, and they expect a fix by the 11th. Gave me a ticket number and everything. I might talk to tech support around lunch to see what their response is. Judging by what the Sprint community says, all of their LTE phones are having issues. Even the Gnex.

Its all phones in general. Network vision has destroyed the network. On average every market currently has between 30 to 50 towers at 0% function. We are encountering this every day and we're getting our asses handed to us because we can't fix it from the store. Everyone swears its their phone despite all the info we show them.?

Not all stores or Sprint customer service telling the truth....they make it seem like the phone in my case when I know the deal....net to mention they don't want to credit me for rendering poor service so they deny it's service......sad
Its pretty rediculous, I call my phone from my desk (that the phone is sitting on) and it rings a few time and goes to voicmail, but the phone doesnt do anyting.
I'm down in the oc in California and signal is decent, 3g been slower lately due to updating the towers, so far no phone call issuers, had the text problem and failing to send texts or not receiving or receiving many times, for now insurgent u set google voice to notify you since it uses data to communicate so it's better at Texts and such, at least til sprint is done with the upgrades.

Happens on my HTC EVO 3D and HTC EVO 4G, so it's not just a phone issue. And my fools at the local Sprint store in my area claim there's no issues. Of course, these are the same fools that think 3rd party launchers are rooting your phone.

Well, google voice solved the text issue. Im happy now.
The threads the OP referenced are pretty much what I was looking at.
I too am experiencing the worst luck when it comes to signal strength. My friend has the good old evo 4G. I put the two phones side by side. I can observe the signal fluctuate on my s3 as the evo has a perfect full bars.
The sprint forum seems to suggest that it might be a network issue. I don't buy it. I think it is a hardware issue unfortunately.
The phone is nice and fast. But this connectivity issue is a deal breaker for me.
