Constant connection drop outs - should I get a rezound? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I got a Galaxy Nexus 9 days ago (along with a rezound for my wife).
I have been dropping connection constantly every since then (and I'm in a strong 4G area in the chicago burbs).
I had Verizon replace the sim card... but it didn't help.
Now they are sending me a new galaxy nexus.
They said that if this one doesn't work they'll wave the restocking fee and send me a new rezound.. I'm wondering if I should just go ahead an do that.
I'm worried that I'm going to end up being stuck with a lemon.
Is there anyone out there who never drops connection with this phone? I never dropped a connection with my incredible in almost 2 years and my wife's rezound has also been rock solid
UPDATE: I called Verizon and had them send me a new Galaxy Nexus and so far this one works flawlessly. I've had it up for almost 3 hours without a single drop on 4G. I'll update again after a few days, but this is a HUGE HUGE HUGE improvement. I couldn't go more than 20-30 minutes max without drops before and my phone would often show that it was off the network in the battery gauge over 50% of the time. So for those of you having this issue make verizon send you a new phone. It appears some of them are simply defective

I went from a rezound to the nexus and I'll say the only thing I liked about the rezound better was the fact that the signal was WAY stronger. I drop calls constantly now and my 4g is actually slower on the nexus... kinda sucks BC its a great phone otherwise

If you are comfortable with or if rooting isn't problem for you try flashing new radio like UGKL1 or XXKL1 or KRKL1. But actually first flash 4.0.3 based ROM and then one of those.
Yes other people also had problems with their connections being droped, but AFAIK 4.0.3 + one of above mentioned radios work for most of people.

He is correct flashling the UGKL1 radio fixed my constant loss of data.

I already tried flashing the leaked radio. I did not flash full 4.0.3 however.. Maybe I'll try that on the new phone.
Thanks for the tip

Sounds more like a busted phone to me. My phone stopped doing that after Verizon came back up from that last outage. My husband's Nexus behaves better as well.

That would be helpful if he were running a GSM Nexus, but if you actually read the OP, you'd see that he wasn't.

I had a terrible singal on my gnex (VZW) when I got it. I tried the 4.0.3 radios which proved a marginal improvement. I ended up reverting the phone to stock and going back to VZW. They replaced my SIM card which left with only brief occasional drops over long black outs that I was having before. After getting a new SIM card I updated the radios again to 4.0.3 and it works flawlessly (3G- I haven't re enabled 4G yet). I think this phone is amazing hardware and personally would very much avoid going to the Rezound. According to VZW, the phone should work but it has seemed to have some issues.
I'm going to turn on 4G now, so if you are curious about that PM me and I'll let you know.
UPDATE: Turned on 4G which locked instantly. I checked my phone a while later to learn that I was without service (data and phone) for 10+ minutes solid. Apparently 4G is the issue for me, at least at work. My signal strengths aren't the best here.

My first Nexus had this problem. Swapping the SIM card didn't help, so VZW replaced the phone. The replacement Nexus doesn't have the problem at all.

Star this issue and hope for the best.

I'm on my second Nexus and sim card, network connectivity is pretty bad. My signal at home is -100 most of the time and at a pizza place in the same neighborhood a few blocks away it's -75 to -80, I don't get it. This afternoon I charged my Nexus up and power cycled it at 6:00 PM. At 10:15, I checked the battery and had not had a network connection for over 3 hours and Cell Standby was at 57% and Screen was at 25%. I power cycled the phone again and got 4 texts sent to me hours before. Should I get a Rezound or a Razr Maxx or wait for a software update and hope that takes care of it. Any advise is welcome!

I got a new GN from verizon.. WAY better.. i updated the first post

CM6 8-1 nightly + latest radio/wimax = horrible reception?

I've been getting horrible reception since I upgraded my radio to the latest one, any one else getting the same?
I didnt get a chance to use it due to its incredible ability to chew threw my battery. I had the new radio in there for ~ an hour with a full battery only to go to 35%. I didnt get any calls during that time so... I cant say that the reception is an issue but, the battery usage definitely is.
i feel like i'm getting better reception with the newer radio
i used to not get any bars at my friends now i'm getting 1 and if lucky 2
but it also might be different based off of location

It's chomping away at my battery as well, how do I flash back?
I seem to be getting weaker signal too, however I just recently moved about 2 miles away from my old apartment, so I can't verify for sure.
My battery life is already pretty bad so I haven't noticed it chewing through battery more so than it used to.
My reception seems to be lacking also on the newest nightly. Unfortunately I'm also seeing the battery drainage issue. I noticed the battery being sucked from my phone, so I've been messing about with the other new ROMs that have come out recently until a new CM comes out.
i didn't flash the newest wimax, but did flash the radio; i have noticed that i get weaker wifi signal connection even though i'm about 5 feet from the router (previously, i would get full bar/connection from this close of a distance)
i'm not sure if it is due to the 8/1 nightly or the new radio, but something is definitely causing weaker signal

Eariler yesterday I loaded the updates via OMJ's ROM radio version was included...I reverted back to CM6 about mid day as I just have gotten use to it over the past few days, my battery which was at about 82% when I left my home yesterday at 6;30pm had lasted til the morning with 22% when I got home at 11am this morning.
I used my phone for Facebooking, texting and normal phone functions...overall I spent atleast 45 mins off and on FB and sent over 275 texts recieving just as many...
SetCPU + Juice Defender w/ profiles set.
I flashes both the new radio and latest wimax over top of fresh 1.08 last night. Both are working however 4th download speeds are much slower than on the older version, avg around 1mb down as opposed to 2-4. Anyone else seen similar results?

I'm in the same boat.
Someone had mentioned in the CM6 Nightly thread that they got better reception with the new radio so I decided to flash it. Since then I've been getting not-so-great 3G speeds as well as way crappier battery life :/
I think I'm gonna go ahead and just flash back to the previous radio.
Yeah, I think I'm going to do the same thing.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
actually on the 8/2 nightly, my signal has been the same if not slightly better than previous nightlys before I flashed the new radio and wimax updates. What's keeping me from really getting into CM6 isn't my battery life (since it's about the same as what I have on dc), it's the lack of any speed dial assignment on the stock contact/dialer app. Does anyone know of a better dialer app that will at least allow speed dial setup?
So,I decided to hold off on downgrading radio and wimax yesterday.I installed Fresh 3.0 last night and am running the stock kernel with newest radio and wimax update.4g speeds today from the same spot as my poor speeds yesterday are outstanding!

I've noticed bad reception / battery life in general not just in the latest nightly. Thinking of going back to the RC, I love being cutting edge but still.
Buy a Seidio Innocell 3500mah, it's what I did, best $65 I've ever spent.
Free options don't seem to be too plentiful at the moment, lolol.

Bad signal on VZW GNex

Anyone else notice a much worse signal on the GNex than other VZW phones in the same location. I swapped from a GSM Gnex and i gotta say, im not impressed.

From what people have said of Samsung, they have bad CDMA radios in general while Moto has the best.
Ya I keep getting random 4g drops in my house, I usually fluctuate between 2 bars of 4g and 2 bars of 3g...

I am. Compared to the Rezound I had for a couple weeks the dBm is -100 to -140 where the Rezound was -80.
Last night it kept dropping to 3G and would not get 4G back unless I rebooted.
Speedtest was about half what it normally was with the Rezound on 4G
This morning the -dBm is over -100 but the speedtest is about to where it was normally so I don't know.
I travel for work so I'm going to give it week and see how to behaves as I move around.
I really like this phone but I need it to be a phone first and if it drops calls or the 4G is this bad it's going to be a deal breaker.
I just did another speed test at -108 dBm and it's over 20MB down. I was getting 4MB down last night and the signal was all ranging all over the place while I was staying in the same spot.
I have to imagine the VZW network was getting pounded pretty hard last night with new adopters and phones being activated. I'd say give it a few days and check back into it

I am experiencing this also coming from a Thunderbolt. Granted the Thunderbolt had flashed radio/Kernal/Rom's. Would that even matter? In this case will an updated radio provide a stronger signal or just increased reliability from being dropped? Maybe both? Idk. Anyone?
These are all in the exact same spot ranging from -100 to -140dBm
Glad I'm not the only one! The Rezound had way better connectivity and reception! Samsung sux in this dept. Ima give it a few days. Off topic here but where's the smart dialing?? I can't believe it didnt make it to ics!! Heh.

I honestly think the phone is just reading your signal wrong. TBolt had this issue also and a modem fixed it somewhat.

I drop signal at random though.
Would that cause it to drop down to 3G?
I have same signal i used to have on my rezound, i still get almost same speeds around 28 up and 18-20 down here in Minneapolis. rezound used to get 32 down and around 20 up, but i am thinking since verizon network was pounded yesterday so there will be some impact on speeds
Whatever new phone that comes out, you can always count on a bad signal thread.
I haven't noticed a difference in signal, but I do think it has better sound quality than my Droid Incredible.
Edit: I just did a speed test (3g) and it was very choppy and not great. I live across the street from a cell tower, so that is not good.
The Moto RAZR I returned yesterday to get this Samsung had much better reception.
I should have remembered that the Koreans can't engineer a good antenna. I'm very unhappy right now.

Maybe your coverage area? I am in Tampa...in a building, in my office, i get 5-6 megs down and 2-3 up...with my LTE GNex, i cant even hold a 4g signal, and when i do its 5 megs each way. Nothing earth shattering....but on top of it, that drops to 3g and stays there. The GSM, always had a connection.

[Q] Radio quirkiness amongst different nexii (Verizon)

My nexus is a hw version 9. it had some hand off issues from wifi to data with the 4.0.2 radios. the 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 work so well i almost thought they could do no wrong. until i got my wife's nexus which is hw version 10. this one works fine with 4.0.2 doing handoffs just fine, but with 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 i get this weird signal drop every once in a while where the network goes away, the bars become a solid dark grey triangle for 2-3 seconds, then connectivity comes back and data shortly thereafter. anyone else seen this?
UPDATE:
i noticed the problem happened even with the 4.0.2 radio. also the longer the phone went without a boot cycle the more frequent the problem became. asked for a replacement and got a CLNR which is hw9 that doesnt seem to have a problem.
see post here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23621403&postcount=15
where are you determining what hw version you have?
the bootloader for one. also the about phone says it in the radios/baseband.
the version 9 reads 1515.09
and the 10 reads 1515.10
Got it. I have version 9 as well. I live outside of a 4G area so I pop in and out of 4G coverage quite often. Personally the 404 radios are working the best for me right now, switching between 3G/4G is pretty seamless. Though I cant honestly say I have had the device in my hand, screen on, and using DATA while it went from one service to another.
yeah thats how my hw9 behaves.
im parked solidly in the middle of a 4g zone and the hw10 just loses all connectivity albeit for just a couple of seconds on the 4.0.4.
4.0.2 works fine.
I'm on HW 10 and the 4.0.2 radios work great. No issues here and no problems with dropped data.
I am HW 10, 4.02 Stock.
And my GNex has been dropping data+voice every 5 mins when I try to use 4G. As long as LTE is off, 3G+voice is fine.
I also have tried 4.04, and same problem...and came back to stock 4.02 and waiting for OTA I guess..or that's what VZW tells me to do...
I had just mentioned this in another thread, but I haven't had the loss of call audio bug since my rev 10 device.
At the same time, my wife has a rev 09 device, and never had it. We are both on 404 radios, and I only drop data when in fringe areas. I never, ever, drop voice.
charlescom, dropping LTE does not affect voice.

Adrynalyne, that is what I thought until I bought gnex.
Check out this google issue if you are so lucky to have picked a good gnex out of lemons.
This is one of major flaws that affected so many gnex users. Officially titled gray triangle of death....
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24345
If you scroll all the way down, you will see all the screen shots I uploaded on exactly what a user faces as the voice and lte drops...
Thank you..
Yeah, I have never seen that before.
Weird.
Edit: Allow me to rephrase. I did have that once. It was a bad sim.
I have this issue. Stock 4.0.2. Have only had the phone for like a week and it is pissing me off
That does look potentially SIM related. The VZ phones do have a micro sized SIM card.
With posters reporting the same issue on multiple replacement phones, I wonder... was the same SIM card transferred to the next new phone?
At least at my location SIM replacement was the first thing on the list way before vzw even start thinking about giving out a replacement. And yes, I have been given so many SIM replacements you dont even know....and as far as bad batch goes.....why are there so many bad batches to begin with.....hahahahahaha...it is almost a joke. I am not even getting frustrated any more...i just laugh....lol
it was definitely not sim related. its my wifes gnex and i swapped sims with her. her phone gave me the same problem with my sim and her sim worked fine in my phone.
doing some more research, here is the findings.
my phone - hw9 - works flawlessly
her phone - hw10 - has problem
got a CLNR from verizon which is hw9 which seems to work flawlessly again.
interesting thing is the difference between the stickers on the insides of the bad and replacement phone:

the good one (CLNR hw9) is the left and the bad one (new hw10) is the right.
there is a long thread on rootz about this very issue and the conclusion is that if u have this particular problem, its hardware, go get a replacement.

cell standby a hardware issue???

long time android user, and my GF just upgraded to her first smartphone to the galaxy nexus, same phone i have. and the battery sucked, she had 50% left and went to work and within 2 hours it was dead, so i unlocked/rooted. and installed aokp 3 milestone along with franco krenel to the latest milestone. same rom and kernel i have, and i get atleast 14+ hours on regular use nothing turned off.
her battery status looks like it usally the cell standby to blame, could this be a hardware issue? i completly wiped data/dalvik/battery and did new install, going to try again flashing back to complete stock. but could this be a hardware issue?

Turn off 4g.
have you checked if you both have the same radio? you can try that
also maybe check hows reception on her workplace
So... she had bad signal. Phone sat there trying to get 4G / hang on to a bad signal. Will drain the battery 100% to 0% in a few hours if you let it do that.
no i haven't tried turning 4g off yet, shouldn't have to i wouldn't think. she lives in seattle and i live 30miles further north of from her, and i don't have a problem with 4g conection. but i'll try that just to see if it gives a different result.
Well I can tell you right now, AOKP gets absolutely HORRID battery life. Try BAMF.

Download juice defender and set it to balanced. You will see a HUGE difference with standby drain.
If you have a third of the time without signal, I would expect energy to drain a lot, as the radio will keep trying to find a signal and consume way more energy than if it is connected and in stand by.

Ditto that. It's easy to blame a particular ROM for one's battery woes, but the truth of the matter is it's invariably something else causing the drain.

Constantly turning on/off mobile data when the screen is off will more than likely drain the battery more than leaving it on. Not to mention that you'll get no background sync or notifications.

No I think you have to turn it off if its right on that fringe area. Plus lte networks and radios are very immature ans have a lot of years to get fully optimized and tweaked to match current cell coverage performance. You're using a brand new network technology that has a long way to go. Beta testing.

GSM vs CDMA - HUGE difference in battery life?

I recently switched from AT&T to Sprint and have the Galaxy Nexus on both services.
My signal for Sprint is better than AT&T at my house and I just ran my first battery test to find that with 2 hours of screen time I got roughly 4 hours of battery life on the Sprint phone verses the AT&T phone which I could easily get at least a day out of it...
Is there really that huge of a difference between the AT&T version versus the Sprint version in regards to battery life?
If this is the case, and the battery life on the Sprint version is this bad, I don't know what to do because there's no way I can only go 4 hours without having to plug it in.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Yep pretty big difference.
LTE on the GN is a separate radio, so you have two radios running at once. Battery killer bigtime.

True but you can disable the LTE radio in advances network settings. That being said, there's still a huge difference. I can only get 3 hours screen on and thats only if I unplug at 100% and use my phone nonstop til it dies. Realistically I get 2 hours screen on a day.
I have the Verizon gnex and I get about 1.25 hours of screen time and at least 10-13 hours of life. Of course I can't live without having certain accounts syncing so I just had to suck it up and live with it. I tried many roms and different methods of trying to get more screen time and lasting the whole day... just not going to happen. Seeing that sprint is also CDMA, the likelihood of getting a impressive battery life is slim.
If you haven't yet, try rooting and putting a custom ROM. I'm running cm10 and I really like it.
