[Q] Overclock Question

Hi. I have a S-Off, perm rooted T-Mobile G2 and would like to use this method to overclock my phone:http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/14/ho...ted-s-off-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-or-t-mobile-g2/
Q1: Is it recommended?
Q2: It requires me to use a custom ROM, which I do not want to. Is there an "original" rom that has ADB Remounting which I can use instead?

I'm not able to view the method you've posted from where I'm at right now, but I can tell you that the most stable, "permanent" overclocking experience I ever found when on stock rom is CM's BaconBits (which includes an overclocking kernel among other things) used in conjunction with SetCPU.
you will need Clockworkmod recovery installed on your phone to flash the baconbits zip. I'm guessing you already have this - if not, you just need to install Rom Manager and you will be able to flash cwm recovery through the app.
from there, all you need to do is install setCPU (it's free here on XDA - just search for it) and use it to set your clock speeds.
easy as pie method for overclocking on stock rom.. and my guess is that it will be more stable than anything you get from theunlockr - it seems to me most of their tutorials are a bit outdated for the vision.

Download ROM Manager and use it to download Pershoot's kernel.

you can try pershoot's as well, but I will say that it did not play nice with my G2's stock froyo rom. this was a few months ago though so maybe there has been a remedy and it's working swimmingly now.
if you get pershoot's kernel to work, I would recommend it over baconbits as pershoot is constantly updating and improving it.

Just to clarify.... You need to change your kernel to overclock not your rom. A lot of roms include an overclocked kernel but that doesnt mean you cant flash a kernel with your stock rom. Make sure you set up a heat profile with setcpu so you dont fry your phone.

I went with a more simple solution, and flashed CM7.
Now it looks as nice as the original and has 1.5GHz overclock.
Do I need to set heat profiles for CM7 or the stable release will take care of it?

Best Desire ROM for optimized battery life?

Hi all,
My partner has been experiencing a few issues with her 'stock' Orange branded Desire, not only being affected by calls dropping and Data being unreliable [sometimes works, sometimes doesn't], but also pretty poor battery life.
On that note, we think it may be a good idea to root her Desire and apply a custom ROM. Are there any ROMs out there which specifically target battery optimization?
I am assuming a new ROM/radio will help resolve her call/data issues, so battery is the next priority to look at.
I'm thinking CM7.0.3 is the safe bet [moreso because that's what I'm running on my Legend ] but is there a ROM out there in the Desire community known for great battery performance?
On a side note, if you can also recommend the best radio to flash [unless it's part of a ROM already] that would be cool.

At first reducing the brigthness-level, turning off 3g/hsdpa, gps and wifi (sleep policy to "never" [settings > wireless & networks > wifi settings > press menu > advanced and set wifi sleep policy to Never; press menu and save) and only turning them on when needed will improve battery life.

I have installed it myself with the kernel in my sig. Especially the standby-battery-power is really impressive. IMHO all small aosp-roms like e.g. cm7, devnull, oxygen or redux will have good battery life. Furthermore, i good kernel with appropriate settings becomes important.
But final one can say, the battery life is most related how much you use your phone.

If your wife is used to the Desire as it is (inc. HTC Sense) then I would highly recommend LeeDroid.
Its well indexed and offers good battery life. The fact that it's based on Gingerbread (2.3.3) is a big help for battery. As far as I know Orange Desire is still on Froyo?
The big benefit with LeeDroid is that if your wife isn't as keen on trying to learn to use stock and likes HTC Sense, she will not notice any difference. It would be worth putting an ext partition on the SD card as well so she wont run out of room for apps.

I have installed 7.0.3 and my battery life drains super quick. All i have enabled is mobile network. So if you ask me.. .I would say CM 7.0.3 is not a very good batt saver.

3ma drain on standby with GPS and BT enabled
ManU Havs Axi kernel undervolted with Vipermod
I found GV to be very good on battery drain too...

In all fairness you wont believe the difference in battery life between stock and a custom rom imho

Is there a recommended kernel for Leedroid and also for CM7.0.3?
This is slightly offtopic but can you supply a link on how to install/flash a kernel? I've not done this before [for my Legend].
Also what radio should I go for her Desire?

Doesn't matter if the radio and kernel you suggest are not the latest/greatest/cutting edge, but as long as they are stable and known for good performance, that is good enough!

Mobile network is one of THE battery killers at all. Turn it off and just turn it on, when you really need it.

I do not know a recommended kernel extra for leedroid. For CM7 (or aosp-roms in general) the manu-kernel is very good:

Furthermore the couttstech-kernels are very good (they can be used for sense-roms as well:

But i would say, search for the corresponding threads of this roms, i think you will find a good kernel.
Flashing a kernel is very easy:
1.) Download the kernel you want to flash as zip and copy the file without extracting on your sd-card
2.) Go into recovery
3.) Do a nandroid-backup, just in case.
4.) Wipe cash + dalvik-cache
5.) Flash zip rom sd-card like you would flash a rom
6.) Reboot
You are done.
I would recommend to use this radio, which is the mentionend recommended radio in the corresponding thread for the rom. E.g. for leedroid it's 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08. If there isn't mentioned any recommend radio, just use the radio which comes with the rom. Nevertheless, you are free to update to the respectively newest one:

You flash a radio like you flash a rom or kernel. But when you do this, DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE UNTIL IT'S FINISHED. With flashing the radio you update your desire's hardware. If there somehting goes wrong, your desire will be bricked probably. So before flashing the radio, check the md5-sum of the downloaded zip.

You are free to choose. But this is the recommmended and most used one (also by developer).

Fingers crossed for the root [will use unrEVOked 3 - this shouldn't be a problem even though her Desire is Orange branded as I understand it - someone please correct me if I'm wrong]
You Desire guys are lucky to have so many ROMs/Kernals to choose from.
For us Legend guys the choice is almost made for us [and I sold my Desire to own a Legend ].

Another vote for LeeDroid here for the Desire. I have been using LeeDroid since I got mine and have never had a problem with my battery life at all. I can go for two days at normal usage without a charge. Even with heavy use I can go a whole day. I charge mine each night in a dock on my bedside.

Thanks FlareHeart, is that running the radio/kernal that arrive with LeeDroid too? No other mods?
Now it's up to her to decide if she wants a ASOP ROM or one based on Sense .

I used Amethyst a bit before the dev jumped ship to Nexus S. It used Coutt's kernel for it and the longest I got out of a full charge was 2 days. And that was general usage (few texts/phone calls a day, push email, Facebook/web browsing).
Using Oxygen now and I frequently get over a day and a half on general usage with thalamus's kernel.

I have used devnull then gingervillain, all vanilla roms. but without sense there is no sense!!. thus I went for insertcoin 1.0.5. which is stable, very nice. u need ext4 partition. 500 mb ok. use minitool partition wizard for Windows. everything is working fine.

[Q] Desire - MIUI Q&A

I am using MIUI on my Desire GSM and I am pretty impressed!
I only flashed the MIUI rom (or better the german translation of it), no hboot, no kernel and no radio!
So I want to ask you:
1. What can I expect from some other kernel?
2. What can I expect from some other radio?
3. Is there a possibility to use some other hboot for more space for apps on my internal flash?
I also got some problems with my miui:
4. Sometimes the phone is consuming very much power. About 850mW for 3G Is this a problem I can fix with a new radio?
5. Every time I pick up a call or I call somebody, after picking up I get a 1-2 seconds Mic-blackout! Is this a problem I can fix anyhow?

1. Yes, you can go for other kernel and test you battery consumption. I am having MIUI 1.9.2 with Tiamat 4.0.6, so far battery life is good.
2. It is subjective to your mobile.you need to try it and a settle with one which works great for you.
3.yes, you can choose custom hboot from alpharev as per your custom rom requirement.
4.yes using 3g will consume more B battery.
5.may be it is a bug, not sure.

What is a kernal

I am running the mik ROM 3.0 and I am not sure what a custom kernal is or how to flash a kernal is it the same as a rom?? How do I apply a kernal while using my ROM?? I have searched the forums and couldn't find an answer plz help me out thanx

A custom kernel lets you overclock and under clock. So you can actually choose what speed you want your phone to run. First download the kernel put it on the root of your sdcard (not in any folders) go to recovery wipe cache and dalvik cache then flash kernel then reboot

The kernel controls certain hardware functions such as process scheduling, CPU clock speeds and voltages, frames per second, battery charge/discharge behaviors, etc. The best possible "layman's" analogy that I can think of is that a kernel is similar to hardware drivers that you install onto a computer. The drivers tell your system how to use whatever hardware components you've got installed.
There are a few rules with kernels though. You can't just download any kernel, flash it, and go on your way.
1. Sense kernels ONLY work with Sense ROMs. AOSP kernels ONLY work with AOSP ROMs.
2. Don't use a HAVS kernel if you're using setcpu.
3. Don't bother flashing a kernel if you don't know what a kernel is or are incapable of reading the sticky, at the top of this forum, whose sole purpose is to explain everything about kernels. Because chances are you're just going to screw up your phone.
Threads about kernels are one of the most common questions on this site, next to battery life issues and ROM preferences. Use the search feature. I guarantee there are a million threads that have already answered your question. If all else fails.....Google.
Edit: kernels do more than just letting you overclock your cpu like evo4gnoob said. If you don't know what a kernel is then you probably shouldn't be overclocking your phone anyway. And no, overclocking your Evolution is not like overclocking your computer. Again, you're likely to damage your phone if you just go and start tinkering without a clue as to what you're actually doing.

JellyBean isn't fully stable on our DHD/I4G just yet. There are always going to be some issues because HTC didn't give us a full 3.0 kernel for ICS. That could be the reason you are experiencing some lag. Kernels could also help you, try the KangBang performance kernel, although the kernel is leaning towards performance, so it could cause instability

I can't link to the kernel (cause I'm lazy and on the xda app). But when you install a kernel wipe your cache and Dalvik Cache and then flash. That's the proper way of flashing a kernel

You'll ruin your phone. A 2.3.X kernel I'd meant for that specific version of Android. If you mix versions (e.g. a Gingerbread kernel with a Jelly Bean ROM) you'll most likely get bootloops and your phone. At worst you'll brick your phone. Don't ever mix kernel versions. Also don't flash a Sense kernel on a AOSP/AOKP/CyanogenMod based ROM (or vice versa), you'll also have a phone that won't boot.

But when I rebooted the phone it gets stuck on a black screen. I can't do anything else unless I take the battery out. I was wondering if anyone can give me a link to the kangbang kernel and instructions in how to install properly if the recovery mode isn't the right way, even though it said kernel updated successfuly. The only compatible alternative kernel for JB is the KangBang (at least that i know of). If you flashed another one, that might be why it booted to a black screen.
