Taking the plunge!

Think i am ready to take the plunge to root my desire and also install a custom ROM. Just have a few queries that need some clarification and suggestions.
1. My radio version is 5.09.05.30_2 do i need to update this when when installing a custom ROM
2. Suggestions on Sense custom ROMs that have fast kernels with low battery drain. I have read a lot about Cyanogen ROMs which seems quite popular but its a non Sense ROM and would appreciate one with Sense. Kinda Like it.

1. See what radio the ROM developer suggests and use that
2. I'd go all out and use the RCMixHD ROM - easily the best Sense-based ROM available and it's based on the Desire HD ROM...but that's just my opinion (wait for the LeeDroid brigade to chime in!!)

I'm far from an expert but i just flashed the latest radio onto my phone and went for LeeDroid 2.2f, which i've been running for a week or two, seems pretty stable so far. I was planning on trying a few ROMs before i get too settled into one.

which radio would that be?

For latest radio, see my signature. But as said, it's best to use the one recommended in the ROM thread if in doubt

LeeDroid seems to be quite appealing at the moment. Any known bugs for 2.2f

Don't know, not a fan of LeeDroid - don't like the custom wallpapers and apps that are used. Prefer mine to look as stock as possible

Which ROMs look as stock as possible?

Teppic's is basically stock with root access and optional extras

I haven't found any bugs at all yet, my current radio is 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 which definately works fine with LeeDroid 2.2f, well it does on my Desire at least !

Any links to where i could get that Teppic's and is it stable with improved speed and low battery drain? Sorry am asking too many questions

Go look for it in ROM development - it's not that hard to do

VillianRom and PinkyDesire are both excellent choices.

LeeDroid Brigade here...... I have tried every ROM possible and the latest LeeDroid offering ,2.2f, is by far the most stable bug free ROM I have ever used. The RCMixHD ROM is very good, if you can live without the camera for the time being.

I get around a day and a half, using generally everything, including Sat Nav.

Try Cyanogenmod, MIUI, Myns Warm, and MikFroyo

I would add Salvage-Mod 1.2.1 to the list mentioned above, specifically with the Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel and LauncherPro. It flies on my device and everything works.

If your looking for AOSP try Cyangenmod, Ultimate Droid,
Sense My favorite so far is probably Mikfroyo.....Second Myns warm...third Fresh....
Just flash all of them and just mess around to find out what you might like. a good starting point is to download Rom manager but don't use that program to flash, just use it to download, then boot into recovery and flash manually. Good luck...
If your really wanting to play around you can try flashing different kernels which I am still trying to figure out a good sense kernel to use for mikfroyo. Good luck

Personally, I have been running Deck's 2.3.3 GB AOSP ROM. It's fast, stable, and everything works, including 4G. I use Tiamat's 3.3.8 SBC kernel and get great battery life as well. You can find his thread at PPC Geeks. He said when he releases the final version, he'll post it here at XDA.

Deck's GB is def my fav GB ROM. Everything works. The final version (1.0) is releasing today at 6pm est. The main thread is at PPC geeks, but Deck said he would start an official thread here once 1.0 launched.

"Best" -- in this case -- is subjective.

Congrats on rooting. Just remember that rooting isn't everything. It's just like getting an admin or superuser account on a Windows or Linux machine. It gives you the ability to modify system files that you normally can't do as the default user.
You need to make sure that your phone is NAND unlocked and you need to flash an alternate recovery. A recovery is kind of like a boot-disk built into your phone. You can boot into "recovery mode" and flash data to the phone. This is how you install a new ROM. The two big recoveries are Clockwork and AmonRa.
Basically you download a ROM in zip format, put it someplace on your SD card where you can find it, boot into recovery, do a backup (make an image you can restore from if things don't go well) and then format data, cache, dalvik, etc.
Once you have a clean slate, flash the ROM from the zip file on your SD card and wait for it to finish. Reboot and enjoy your new phone! It's like installing a fresh copy of the OS with various modifications.
There is a bit more to it that all that but that is the gist. Once you are familiar with the process it's easy. Before long, you'll be comfortable with reading about a new ROM, making a quick backup and flashing it to check it out. If it is good you keep it, if it sucks you restore your old backup. I go through phases where I like what I have and then the bug will bite me and I try like 2 or 3 ROMs in a week.

Just my 5 cents, but you should get better battery life on 3.3.7, as in 3.3.8, the minimum voltage was raised to help those that flashed the kernel and natively got reboots.

FOR ME:
When I'm in an AOSP mood, it's CyanogenMod. It was the first one I tried and I'm too lazy to adjust to other AOSP roms LOL. I have tried other AOSP roms, but I like the features included in CM and the support he gives.
When I'm in a Sense mood, it's usually Mik roms (MikFroyo, MikZ, MikGinger, etc) because what he does to those roms is nothing short of amazing. Speed, stability, and everything just works. When Myn gets around to releasing his Gingerbread rom that's going to be my DD.

Well if you are looking for 2.3.3 with everything working including 4g and GPS I would recommend CyanogenMod. You battery life might be kinda crappy even with the Tiamat 3.3.8 kernel as compare to a 2.2 rom.

Im a fan of Mikz and Kings is you like sense. They both do amazing work and their custumization is top notch.

I'm running Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo (Sense ROM) with the Netarchy 4.3.1 cfs-havs-nosbc kernel and Launcher Pro Plus.
Lightning fast underclocked at 499 mHz awake and 128 mHz with screen off (using SetCPU). Battery life is shocking too with the Seidio 3500 extended battery. Unplugged at 7AM and heavy usage all day (phone calls, texting, email, web surfing, Pandora, etc) it's still around 45-50% at 11PM
Always searching for a better battery kernel though, lol

Sorry, but people claiming everything is working on CM7 for htc evo obviously don't use their cameras. Still shots are not taken at full 8mp at proper aspect ratio. There is also no 720p recording.
Have a look at Elite Series III.It's super fast and has everything working. The theme it comes with is amazing. Proper flash instructions are on that thread and there is nothing else you need to fux with after flashing.

[Q] Most stable 'stock-like' rom

Hey guys
I'm flashing my mom's Desire (she has no need for any extra features above the desire's stock ones) so I'm wondering if you have any recomendations on a very stable and fast ROM?
I would have installed the stock desire rom, but since I rooted and s-offed the device already it seems a waste to lose it.

Oh and Sense is a must, she just learned how to use it, if i give her an AOSP rom she will have to learn to use it again...

Can't you install stock s-offed and rooted?

Why would you root it at all when she doesn't need any extra functions? Also, you choose wrong timing to do so with official Gingerbread release in the upcoming weeks.
But, if I was doing so, I'd flash AuraxTSense 8.4.

sorry to barge in but i was wondering the same question! i know whats the OP need, he bought a new phone and giving the Desire to his mom. am i right?
even if you are not, i just bought SGS2 today and giving my Desire to my mum. need recommendation too. the most stock look and can be stable and no performance decrease in a long run. cuz i am gonna be away from her when college opens, so i dont want the phone to have trouble.
S-offed, rooted, Cm7 r2 hboot. but i'll go back to stock hboot maybe.

Teppic74's ROM's are all stock and I started out on them. They're great and have some great power saving features hard coded in.

Basically, if you just flash the first two download links in the quote, you'll have rooted ROM that is entirely stock. No extra features or anything that isn't in the HTC RUU. Then if you flash the powersaving mod, nothing changes featurewise but internally the phone will use less power and her battery will last longer. She won't need to do a thing. With A2SD+, all you need to do is go through installed apps every now and again and move them to the internal storage (as the phone is "tricked" into installing apps on the EXT4 partition instead of on the phone itself, which means more apps available to be installed but just as fast as normal).

I've been using it personally since the end of May. No problems at all, just lacking updates (but the developer is busy withj real life, so that's that)
It's using the new Sensation and 2.3.3 Android version and, it's sense, and, it looks sexy.

I wouldn't put my money on it if I was you. Hint: check the newest Leedroid thread and see massive number of people trying to squeeze /system of 145mb on oxygen hboot. All rooted and have s-off. No offense on the op.

It was my phone for less than a week over the easter, rooted, s-offed installed rcmix v8 then I got myself my new Desire HD and been using that (sig).
For the Desire I installed RCMix's rom since i didn't mind any bugs, restarts and force closes since i thought i would update it on regular basis with the new versions. But as soon as I got my new phone, I left the country (student in uk) and just came back this week for holidays, and my mom has been complaining with reliability so I'm returning her phone to the most stable build of 'stock-like' rom.
If you mean flashing a RUU and then rooting and s-offing that just seems a bit of a waste of time. Since it's already rooted and s-offed i would like to keep it that way.

Read above and the official GB for desire is unknown time away from now, HTC if i recall corectly have loads of problems with the lack of memory and they still havent given a release date. So as far as I know GB might come in months.

I might give it a try but im using sense 3.0 on my DHD and even with the newer CPU and more memory and more frequent updates it still has a few glitches. I searched through the thread and it seems that the ROM still requires some bug fixes (ppl talking about bugs with headset and other small bits and bobs)

I'm using a D2EXT modded version and I don't have any problems with the headset. The v2.0 is pretty ironed out, 2.1 is where people seem to be having issues. But for your mum I guess the Twppic74 ROM would be best, definitely!
@theguybefore Eh, but they're all pretty clear that you need the Cyanogen hboot? I guess you're right!

That's old info. Latest news is that it passed QC and should be released in the next three weeks.
Forget 3.0 etc port stuff etc., you know you need rooted stock. She doesn't care for Sense 3.0 but cares if bluetooth doesn't work with handsfree.

Pretty sure bluetooth works ok with this ROM. It's hit and miss and dependant on hardware. The RCMixS ROM as I said has bee really ironed out. There's also the InsertCoin ROM which he's more up to date with advancements!
Hope you find the Teppic74 ROM well! Served me well for many months.

Superb ROM - Once I'd managed to install it (only recently acquired a Desire from a Hero upgrade) it's been excellent.
I can't find fault: Bluetooth (inc car kit), camera, video, iPlayer, GPS, Speed etc etc all running nice and smooth.
The only thing is that the arcade boot screen might not be to your Mom's liking - although boot time is good.

[Q] Desire - MIUI Q&A

I am using MIUI on my Desire GSM and I am pretty impressed!
I only flashed the MIUI rom (or better the german translation of it), no hboot, no kernel and no radio!
So I want to ask you:
1. What can I expect from some other kernel?
2. What can I expect from some other radio?
3. Is there a possibility to use some other hboot for more space for apps on my internal flash?
I also got some problems with my miui:
4. Sometimes the phone is consuming very much power. About 850mW for 3G Is this a problem I can fix with a new radio?
5. Every time I pick up a call or I call somebody, after picking up I get a 1-2 seconds Mic-blackout! Is this a problem I can fix anyhow?

1. Yes, you can go for other kernel and test you battery consumption. I am having MIUI 1.9.2 with Tiamat 4.0.6, so far battery life is good.
2. It is subjective to your mobile.you need to try it and a settle with one which works great for you.
3.yes, you can choose custom hboot from alpharev as per your custom rom requirement.
4.yes using 3g will consume more B battery.
5.may be it is a bug, not sure.

1. If you say "battery life is good", you mean better thas the normal MIUI Kernel? Or which Kernel comes with the MIUI Rom?
2. I got no problems with reception, only the 3G power consumption and the delay after the call-establishing, may this be fixed with new radio?

[Q] Rooted my phone, installed Custom Rom - What Next??

Hi all,
Started reading the forum yesterday and successfully managed to Root my phone using the 'How to root sticky' and installed the Android Revolution HD ROM all in less than 10 mins. I originally came to the site to look for ways to improve the battery life and to be honest am still searching, since installing I have a few basic questions:
Will the fact i have rooted and installed the ARHD Rom improve my battery life alone or do I need to perform other tasks?
Is my phone now sim unlocked to all us on other mobile networks in the UK?
Is there a top 10 list of things I should/could do now I have rooted?

The ROM on its own will help battery life but won't really make an enormous improvement, as the most recent official HTC update is apparently quite good for battery life anyway (especially compared to how the phone performed when it first came out). It does include a "daemon" to adjust CPU speed, so the phone doesn't use as much juice when the screen is off, and that certainly makes some difference. Also ARHD contains a custom kernel which supports things like overclocking, under-volting, etc. Under-volting won't save you a lot of battery, but it can help - read up carefully before you try it though. killersloth's scripts are probably an easy way to start experimenting, but I use Daemon Controller (this app is in ARHD, but I'm not sure if the included version has the UV features). And I find Juice Defender good for extending battery life (some people love the app, some hate it, but it works for me) and some of its features require root.
If you used the Advanced Ace Hack Kit to root, then yes, your phone should be sim-unlocked.
Now you're rooted there's not really a top five "do these things next" list, I think. You can install apps that require system level access, you can flash themes to change the look of the phone, and there are all kinds of mods and tweaks in these forums. But the main advantage of rooting is that you can install custom ROMs, which offer dramatic improvements over the official firmware - ARHD is close to stock HTC but with significant performance enhancements, but there are others that offer graphical enhancements, or are ports of Sense 3.5 ROMs from other phones. Not to mention things like MIUI, which redesign the Android interface, or Cyanogenmod for a fast and light alternative to ROMs with Sense.

Hello breet, I've recently also flashed my first custom Rom and it was also ARHD have you flashed the radio that they recommend? that really improved my battery life and improved my signal strengths. The recommended radio and download is on the ARHD page just below the Rom download button.
The guide I used to flash the radio is by leith51 and is excellent:

You'll need to do the Eng S-off aswell as the Radio S-off you've already done but all details are on Leith51's guide.
I only upgraded to ARHD 6.31 the other day and so just upgraded to the new radio myself but I'm getting even better battery results
