I'm the newest owner of the LTE GN. While I absolutely love it over my Rezound (mostly because of ICS and the sleek factor of the device) I've noticed that both the Gmail and Facebook apps aren't pushing notifications to the phone. I've scoured the phone for the options to enable them, but I'm just not seeing them. Gmail isn't a big deal since I switch to the standard email app and that pushes no problem, but Facebook would only push messages, not wall posts or replies. Any suggestions? Thanks!
For Gmail, tap Menu, Settings, tap your email address, Email notifications.

Facebook doesn't have official push notifications. The fastest polling period you can select in settings is 30 minute sync. I've noticed that for things like friend requests and event invites its usually like 5-10min behind the site updates.
I've never been able to get notifications consistently though. I use the Facebook Messenger app for push messages and that does work. That's all I care about really.

Rad. So any alternative apps that can get me push notifications?
What about friendcaster? It says
"★ Gmail/K-9 Push Notifications. FriendCaster can check for emails that Facebook sends to you telling you that you’ve got a notification."
"★ Notifies on Facebook Messages, Friends’ Birthdays & Notifications"

I don't enough to try and fix it, all I wanted was contact sync which although some custom ROMs do the picture resolution is piss poor. I now use HaxSync and I'm happy with it
I get FB push notifications. It's not instantaneous, but rather in the period of 2-10 mins.
You just set your refresh interval to "Never" and you're set.

Currently im getting 2 notifications for the same email, the mail app lets me download the attachments i get , i cant seem to do that on the gmail app, just lets me preview the music i get sent and not download it for example.
so basically which of the two is better, can i stop getting two notifications at once, if i remember correctly the gmail app seems to always receive the mail 1st, is there away to download attachments from the gmail app?
If you check out my thread here, there are some problems with both the Gmail application and the Mail application.
If you have to pick one or the other to use exclusively, I would use the Mail application. (ie, can save attachments, can click links, can select text to copy to clipboard, can attach files other than photos)
You can stop getting 2 notifications at once. Do one of the below.
To stop Gmail notification:
Open Gmail application - Press Menu key - Tap "Settings" - Toggle "Email notifications"
To stop Mail notification:
Open Mail application - Press Menu key - Tap "More" - Tap "Notification settings" - Toggle "Email notifications"
you do realise that when you tap preview in the google app, it actually downloads the file anyway, right? well, for some files it does. Pictures are downloaded anyway. i would assume music should be the same.
you should then find it in downloads in the browser....

This does not work for all files though. It annoys me that .zip files and basically every "unknown" format is not available for preview/download through the standard Gmail app. I have been using Gmail in the browser to download these earlier, but if it works in the default Mail program, its a godsent.
I moved ovr to the mail app a few minutes ago, seems more comprehensive BUT I am a bit concerned about battery life as the sync logo in the notification is constantly on ...
Also if I use the Mail app with exchange to do calendar as well do I get the colour coded calendars as I like to know what belongs to what calendar ?

It is probably still syncing your mail. Let it be for a while.
I am wondering what uses most battery, Exchange Push from Gmail, or regular Gmail push?
Why would you use Exchange to sync you gCal? You get colour coding by default in the standard gCal sync. I have disabled the autosync of Gmail, and am now using Exchange Push instead.
No raeson for using the gCal to be honest, was just trying to extend battery.
Mail app seems quite comprehensive . I like it just need the bloody sync logo to stop!
Don't need to worry about the sync logo if it's not rotating. It's only actively syncing when it's rotating.
Thanks guys ...

whats the advantages of using the xchange server? i just signed in regularly, and seem to get mail fast no issues, ?
also as google mail does not have a widit i have the normall mail program on one of my home screens, but the normal mail program recives mail once every 15 mins, the google one seems to recive instantly, can i set the htc mail program to get mail the same way google mail does?
You have to set it up as an ActiveSync Exchange account instead of a POP3/IMAP account to get push support
You then go in to the Mail settings and choose Push in the interval settings.
oh ok, is that easy to set up lol?

It's just you. I've been syncing with Google's Exchange server ever since my Touch Diamond days. Follow the directions in the following link to the letter.

If you click and hold on the address bar in the browser you get the option to share a URL. choose this and then choose to share via GMAIL. it sends fine. however, the mail never gets delivered. Not until you actually go into your gmail app and refresh. Then the mail gets sent/delivered. If you choose to send a link using the MAIL application (hotmail for example) it sends immediately. Is this a HTC problem or a gmail app issue? anyone notice this? I would prefer to share URLs via gmail, but hotmail works and gmail doesn't. not properly anyway.
I've just tried this and it works fine for me - shared a URL via Gmail and it got delivered fine without having to go into Gmail.
Regards,
Dave
Ok I figured this out.
If you click and hold on the browser address bar to share a page, you can share via peep, facebook, gmail, mail, message, etc.
If you choose HTC MAIL widget (usually set up with exchnage or hotmail) it will send out the mail immediatley.
If you choose to use gmail to share the page it gets sent correctly, but it will just sit in your gmail outbox until you either open the gmail app and refresh, or else turn on the sync. Using the HTC MAIL widget does not require you to turn on sync. It just gets sent. Gmail needs the sync turned on to send the mail.
Not a big deal, but it means I'm more likley to use hotmail to share url links via email now, because its quicker, instant, and does not require me to enable sync which is great. I don't need to pull in weather, friendstream, gmail, and everything else. I can just hit "share via mail" send. done.
I guess its a gmail app problem.

One question though - why do you have sync disabled? If you don't want to sync everything (e.g. twitter/weather), just switch off those individually or change the schedule of those items to something more appropriate.
Regards,
Dave
I suppose the reason I don't normally have sync on is that I used to just do everything manually. i.e. just refresh the weather manually if I looked at it. Or refresh friendstream manually as I looked at it. Or open gmail if I wanted to check it etc. I suppose its a habit to save battery life, but I'll look into it now that you mention it, and maybe just set these things to update once per day etc. Then I can override that manually for each service as required, plus gmail would send instantly if I do it that way. Cheers, I'll have a look at doing that.
I wanted to use the GMAIL app for my phone, but since there is no way to set it NOT to push email (which is battery draining), I had to switch back to the stock email app. However, I am noticing that the stock app does not actually delete emails in my gmail, but instead sends them to a newly labeled folder called [imap]/trash.
Is there a way to stop this all from happening? I really don't want to have to go in and delete stuff twice all the time. Would anyone recommend any other (preferably free) email apps for an unrooted stock GS3?
Thanks!
EDIT: This also happens to sent emails. They go to ta [imap]/Sent folder instead of just my regular sent folder.
Uh, you can go into Accounts -> Sync and uncheck the Gmail sync option to stop it from syncing.
If you want to sync other things, and not gmail just uncheck the gmail option.

good point, sorry about that. yeah, i don't want my email constantly pushed, but i also would rather not have to check it on my own as i have 5 email accounts and prefer to just get notified hourly.
i'm trying the k-9 app, but it doesn't group threaded messages. i guess that's a small price to pay... meh.

sweet. thanks!
Also, does anyone know if having multiple email accounts pushing vs. just one account pushing would drain the battery faster? does it matter how many you have going?
About a month to a month and a half ago, I developed this problem on my Email(not Gmail) app set up for my Exchange account: mail would occasionally not be pushed automatically and I would have to open the email app to fetch all the emails. There is no pattern that I am able to figure out when this automatic push does not work. Sometimes mail gets pushed and everything works great but at other times i would have gotten 6-7 emails and none would have gotten pushed. Rebooting the phone temporarily fixes this. First I thought this was a server side problem so I downloaded Touchdown(trial version) and had it run on the same account alongside. Touchdown is able to show all emails as they are pushed whereas sometimes the native email app fails to do so. Gmail is also able to push emails to my Gmail app at all times without any problems. Touchdown interface is ok but I actually like the stock email interface a whole lot better. Anything I can do to fix this?

This behaviour is new for JB. The stock email app requires sync to be on to actually poll, or even push like it should. Having never been a "syncer", I was fearful of awful battery at first, but this isn't the case. With two email accts on push, and the Gmail app syncing, it doesn't drain battery like you'd think. Just uncheck the elements for each account that you don't want synced.
There are quite a few reports of this on Google Code; the recommendation is to enable sync 9 times out of 10, assuming all the server settings are correct, etc... I turn off sync from 22:00 to 06:00, but other than that, it's on.

I am using the Email app from Samsung. I have it synching to both Gmail, and to a Yahoo account. It notifies me for the Yahoo, but not the Gmail.
Now, I had turned off Gmail notification in the Gmail app, as I had gotten dual notifications: one from Gmail, one from Email. But now I find I am not getting notification from the Email app for Gmail, although I do for Yahoo. So, I have turned Gmail notification back on, and I do get notification from it. But of course then in the notification bar, it takes me to Gmail app, and I prefer to use the Email app.
Any suggestions?

Afraid I don't have any suggestions since I've worked all weekend trying to fix the problem. If it's any consolation the yahoo mobile mail update site has dozens of irate comments. Seems as if the new update (around Dec 12) is the culprit. Don't find anything from Yahoo but surely they'll get it fixed before long.

For what it's worth. I found a copy of the old yahoo mail apk, uninstalled the current version, installed the old version and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, yahoo automatically upgraded in less than an hour. Tried it again with the same results. Found out that you cannot stop upgrades. If you have time, I'd like for you to try the old version just to see if your results are the same.

I had just done that and posted a note with results back on the yahoo web site before seeing your post. I wasted many hours this past weekend that could have been spent watching football if I had had your insight. Anyhow I appreciate your advice and the following is the note I sent along for other frustrated yahoo users:
A possible temporary fix for Yahoo Mail
I have at least temporarily fixed my non-notification problem with the new update of Yahoo Mail. First I opened google market, uninstalled yahoo mail, while in market I opened menu and unchecked automatic updating. I then downloaded yahoo mail 1.4.5 apk and installed it. This can be found on numerous sites after googling. After signing in I opened the app went to menu and picked the notification procedures I wanted. I'm on a galaxy s3 and so far so good. Seems to be holding.

Don't know for sure but it seems likely that you're seeing a conflict between similar programs. One is probably establishing precedence. I had a number of similar problems this weekend when I was trying to use light flow along with gmail and stock mail and yahoo. When I would get one working the others wouldn't. Finally had stock mail and yahoo working but notification was a sometime thing. I'll be if you reinstall yahoo apk 1.4.5, yahoo will work as a stand alone program and the others will work as expected. Let me know.

Interesting.
I have two programs: gMail, and eMail. I don't have Yahoo installed. With that theory, it seems adding a third app would add to the problem.
It is interesting that the email app will notify when I receive messages from Yahoo email, but not Gmail. But I think you may be right about some kind of conflict. It's also interesting that when on ICS, both alerted for Gmail. So I would get double notification. So I had turned off notification in Gmail for the inbox, but left it on for a particular folder (I wish the email program would let me set different notifications for different labels, like Gmail will).
I doubt I can uninstall Gmail, but maybe I can. I might try uninstall it and see if I get notifications from the Email one, and then reinstall and see what happens.
OH, by the way, I too have Lifghtflow installed. ANd while writing this post I had my wife send me a test email to my Gmail account. The light came on for LIgfhtwave, but neither app notified. I may just try turning on sounds, etc, and do it all from Lightwave.
Ugh...but then I may still have issues with the other Gmail folder.
I'll keep status posted here.

I don't think you can uninstall gmail. However, what I did was to go to settings, then app manager, highlight gmail, delete data, and then force close. That takes it out of commission for awhile and gives you time to try other things. Don't know what brings it back to life after a FC but I know that a reboot does bring it back. I've been messing around with android devices for a few years and it seems that the S3 is the most unforgiving and most demanding of protocol of any yet. But I really do like it.

I have tested some things. My initial setup was no Gmail account in the Samsung Email app, and no sync for Gmail in my Google account's settings.
So I activated auto-sync of Gmail in my Google account's settings on my phone. Then, I added my Gmail account to Email app. I added my Gmail account as an Exchange ActiveSync type account, so it would use push-email (instead of polling with POP3/IMAP).
On my computer, I opened Gmail webmail and sent myself an email.
- Within seconds, Email app rang and showed me a notification in my notifications bar.
- Waited a couple of minutes, but the Gmail app would not show a notification. I went to my Google account's settings and clicked Sync all. Now, Gmail app synced and rang and added a notification in the notification bar.
I guess I was just too impatient and did not wait long enough before Gmail app sync, but the two apps (Gmail and Email) show me notifications. You might want to try configuring your Gmail account as an Exchange account in Email. (What Are the Gmail Exchange ActiveSync Settings?)
