Overheating problem? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

When I have my phone plugged in and am tethering 2 worrying things happen.
A. The phone drains battery VERY VERY quickly, (yes even when plugged in). Quickly I mean like 20-30 percent in half an hour.
B. The phone starts to get very very hot. So hot that when I turn it off, it does not let me charge and instead the overheating icon flashes. If I leave it on, the screen and the capacitive touch buttons start to flash erratically and the back gets even hotter.
This kind of frightens me, is it happening to anybody else? If so can you please post. Also I am using Blazer ROM 3.8 if that makes a difference. Please reply thanks!

How are you tethering? Through usb or wireless hotspot? Are you tethered while on 3G or 4G? How is your signal while tethered? All these things are relevent so answer these these questions so we can offer you some advice.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am tethering through the Sprint Wifi Hotspot on 4G. I have 2 bars on 4G when I am doing this.
Need anything else?

Check your task manager and see how many apps you have eatting at your CPU.....and are you overclocked?....if yes...don't overclock while teathering

what rom you on?? When I was on blazer 3.8 it was like you stated. Since I've been on 3.9 it doesn't get nearly as hot or drain as fast.

Mine overheats when using Netflix over 4G and charging. I run my phone stock and really clean with nothing extra running. Sometimes I get an image freeze and a short sound loop and I have to force shut down. But usually it just tells me that it isn't charging anymore due to the battery being too hot. The battery is always cold, but the phone is hot.
The phone runs hot. Wot wah.

I'm on 3.8 (the first version) I got really confused when he released another one the same day? I have nothing else running and I have not touched any CPU settings, so I'll just have to conclude the phone runs hot. Can this permanently damage the phone? If so what can I do to prevent that. Thanks again for the replies!

Heat is the phone's worst enemy. I love PH and his work but you gotta stay away from heat. It shortens the life span of your phone.
Edit: he updated it today so I'd give that a try.

Yeah get off 3.8 as soon as you can, when I did the problems you mentioned went away. BTW I'm on his latest 3.9 and it is far superior in every way...3.8 didn't like our phones too much!

i've definitely had this same exact problem.. Phone/Battery heats up (>40C) and drains quickly with 4g and wifi tethering active. I think overheating the battery like this will shorten the life of the battery in the long run.
Maybe tethering over usb is the solution. fwiw my evo used to tether 4g without this issue. im using blazer 3.9 (upgraded from 3.7, wasnt ever on 3.8) stock clocks/kernel.

Hot LIPOs are less efficient in their discharging and will drain more amp-hours than if they were cold and doing the same things. Running them hot will also shorten their life, correct.
If you battery runs hot, swap it for a cold one* and wait until your battery is cold to charge it off a wall charger or something. These low C rated batteries we use don't really get toasty from just charging, but you are wasting energy trying to charge a hot battery over a cold battery.

This is gonna sound super ghetto, but it's what I do and it works. When your are running your tether, have the phone plugged in, take an ice pack and a couple paper towels. Put the paper towels on top of the ice pack and your phone on top of that and you're golden for about an hour. Keeps it at a nice 25°c

sounds like it would work... but there has to be a better way. I tether at work a lot (to get around pages i use like netflix/facebook and whatnot being blocked) what i've been doing is limiting my tethering based on how warm the phone is, when it heats up past 40 i give it a rest (and get back to work).
Helping me find a lasting fix to this problem will allow me to be less productive, and hopefully extend the life of my s2.

I have been meaning to make a thread on this. It happens when tethering only, that the phone overheats.
The reason being is the power management for tether I think got bonkered with the addition of 4g tether. Something is not optimized. The battery level literally deplete 10% within minutes
I've overheated to the point where my vibration motor makes noise, and got corrupt data twice. So now I have to tether with a glass of ice on my phone, ice pack would be better.
I appreciate the tether, but the trade off is ridiculous.

See, this is weird... I've been wondering why my phone DOESN'T heat up appreciably while tethering, w or without 4g. My og epic always would for sure. I do the same type of browsing on tether with this phone (not super intense, just browsing, but it always heated up the og epic) and the phone stays cool to the touch, or maybe just barely perceptibly warmer. Not even enough to make me check batt temp.
I'm running stock rooted, using sprint hotspot hack. No overclock. FWIW.

I would just take the back off the phone and have a small fan blow into it. Also I heard underclocking to 800 MHz while tethering will keep your phone cooler.

Thanks for the amazing replies people! I recently switched onto 3.9 and to calibrate my battery I charged to 100% and tethered on 4G for about 2 hours no problem. So I suppose it was just some problem with 3.8 then?

Ditto
Same thing happens to me but from daily use. I'm on the web a lot. I'm rooted but running stock rom. It's been really bad the last few days, especially after I changed the 4G idle speed. So that may be one issue for me. Oh well

I experienced the same problem , but I think it's due to tethering as the CPU is processing and forwarding more traffic . I fixed this by limiting the tethering download speed . I used an app called bandwidth ruler for that . and my samsung SIII is relaxed while tethering

I have used that kernel and the battery tweak together and didn't notice a problem. But that was on MY phone. I can't speak for anyone else's experience. If there was a problem somewhere, I just didn't happen to notice it. If my fingers go idle for too long, I flash things just to stay busy. I don't stay with one particular combo/build for too long. I am running Myn's 2.2 with Net's 4.2 havs less smartass combo and love it. Battery life is awesome. Again, my phone likes this build. Yours may be different. Experiment and see what works best for you.
I like the perspective you put that in. Right now (from what I have tried) the king#11 has been the most efficient. It's 'zippy' and decent on battery life. I was still looking to achieve the 1 day xxx hours. Most I've ever managed was 20 hours on practically no use with wifi on. I'm having an issue connecting to wifi now. It had nothing to do with roms or kernels but the connection will time out but it will still be connected with excellent. I have no WEP or WPA so I cannot find the problem.

For the WiFi issue, try a hard reboot on the router. I always had problems with a linksys router I had. Same signs you are getting. A factory reset always fixed the issue. Finally bought a new router. As for the full days use of the phone, check the update intervals of your apps. Gmail, regular mail, Facebook, etc. If they are constantly polling one an hour, it will eat up more battery. Also, signal strength affects batt life. At work, I have a low signal, always switching between Sprint and Verizon towers. If I flash verizon's prl, my battery holds up longer. If you are running overclock software, this will also take a toll on battery. Did you bump charge your battery? Some say it works others don't. It worked for me. I don't use HTC's charger either. I use the charger from my hackedberry. Haha. Again, some say HTC's charger is garbage. To each their own.
I haven't used that charger since the first week I got it. I used my samsung rant charger. It is longer and more effective. I don't charge my phone a lot. I just charge my extra or dead batteries. I leave them on a little longer because it turns blue when it reaches 1500 mAH and they are 1800 mAH batteries. I have four now (3 1800s and one stock). I haven't really tried battery calibration because I don't charge the phone much but maybe it will help. I deleted kik and ping chat in efforts to improve. PowerAMP always runs though and I don't really like that. So you really think it is the rouder not the EVO?

It quite possibly could be the router. Have you tried hopping off another WiFi network to verify?
Actually I haven't. The rouder worked fine and my wifi was great and one day poof! So maybe it was the rouder? I want even rooted yet.

router....as in it routes network traffic.....
I haven't tried that one but ziggy bfs and cfs were too laggy for me. All the laptops in house have no issues, not even my brothers ipod touch when he is here. It's only my EVO that doesn't cooperate with it. And sorry for my spelling of router, I'm usually good with vocabulary lol.

Phone Temperature

So I was using my phone as a hotspot on 4g to download a couple files on my laptop, and I got a phone call.. talked for about 20 minutes when I noticed my screen was super hot to the touch. I checked the temp on my phone and it was at 120f so I cut off my hotspot till I was done talking..
Obviously I know its not good to hit those temps for extended periods of time, but does anyone know what the maximum running temperature should be for this phone? Like what could I run it at for extended periods of time without damaging it?

As you prolly know, any electronics and batteries life decreases the longer they are exposed to higher temps. It try not to let my phone and battery to get over 100*F. With that said I have had my battery get to 120* before. I immediately shut my phone off and pulled the battery. (I was charging it with hotspot on.) With all that said bottom line try to keep your phone as cool as possible. It not only helps prolong the life of the phone but you'll run into less issues down the road.
Edit: I read on another forum some people are getting their phones to 121*F - 134*F and getting battery temp too high/charging paused.

For those with battery issues.

Leave ICS and get back on GB.
Ive had this phone since the day it came out. Switched to ICS once the developers started dropping ICS leaks, etc.
For the past 2 weeks for some reason, Ive had nothing but HORRIBLE and i mean HORRIBLE battery life. Phone would not last me more than 4-5 hours of heavy use. I'd have to carry around my portable battery pack to charge the phone on the go. I did everything to my knowledge to try and conserve battery life. CPU tweaks, battery monitoring, tried different ROMs, Kernels, Modems, etc, etc. Nothing would significantly improve battery life. I even went ahead and ordered a new battery last week to remedy this problem (which has not yet been delivered/used)
2 Days ago I flashed back to Blazer 4.0 ROM (GB).
I unplugged my phone yesterday morning at exactly 7:30am. Did not step back into my house until 530 which at that point I was at 35% and had been using my phone all day as I normally would. Web browsing, tons of texts, Used Navigation for about 2 hours, etc. I did not plug my phone to the charger until 10pm. Phone was on 19% then. Mind you, this is on the first day of the Phone being on a new ROM/GB so the battery has not yet settled/calibrated as Its only been charged Once since flashing over.
I refuse to switch back to ICS for the sole reason that battery levels have obviously improved with something as simple as switching back to GB.
Just a heads up for anyone with ICS on their E4GT having issues with battery life.
If only I got a dollar for all the times a thread like this is made.. I'd be rich. Blah blah ICS sucks yes we know... So far my phone must be a super phone because it's handling ICS well.

I agree with you, Ray. I'd also be rich for every time I've read of E4GT owners who's phones are running ICS with no problems. But then theres the bunch who also complain that they have problems. I never stated ICS sucks. At this point these phones are old by today's standards. Be glad you're one of the ones who's running ICS with no issues. I for one will stay on GB until I switch to a new carrier/new hardware sometime soon.
Just thought I'd give some feedback of my experience with battery issues on ICS in comparison to then switching back to GB.
I don't know if you've tried Blazers ICS ROM, but that thing has some AMAZING battery life. I've been running it for a few weeks now, everyday I get at least 12 hours of moderate to heavy use, without my own tweaks, and by the time I connect to charger I'm at 35%
Arguments apart
i have a few friends all on this or that ICS and none of them is happy with the backup
whatever its a fact ICS goodness never really reached E4GT, lets hope FI03 onwards some sense prevails at those losers at sammy and they push something which we can smile about.
FYI i am also on ICS Rom , still in testing phase after getting my new white beast 10 days back , already tried like 3 , each for three days
running galaxy 1.8 since yday and hoping it shapes well otherwise i ll also move back to GB
I've tried multiple ICS rooms and I've always gotten great battery life (14+ hours with 3+ hours screen on time).
The only times I've ever had battery life issues were when a certain app was the culprit and was keeping my phone from deep sleep or causing frequent wakes, which is almost always the case with poor battery life issues.
Check out an app called GSAM Battery.. it will tell you what is using up your battery in easy to read graphs and percentages. Also, check out CPU Spy to see if your phone is actually going to deep sleep mode when you turn your screen off--again, it shows you in an easy to read chart with times in each state.

I got over 30 hours last weekend with light use, but the next day, my battery would drain 5 to 10 percent per hour with no use. I have all the utilities to track what's happening, but cannot find a definitive cause. Poor reception seems to be a factor, but not the whole story.
EDIT: I just installed GSam. Thanks for the tip!

Still waiting for the new battery to arrive. I would love to try it but I'm in the midst of a heavy usage of Verizon PRL on my phone. Sprint doesn't like heavy roaming users from what I've been reading. Sprint 3G in my neighborhood here in NYC sucks Donkey nuts. I can cross the street and get 3 bars more than I have sitting on my front porch. But thats a whole other topic of discussion.
Im not sure why my phone couldnt play well with ICS but it really was horrible. I consider myself a heavy user and ICS couldnt keep up with battery demands. I tried undervolting, etc. Oh well. Been eyeing the SGS3 or the upcoming SGNote 2. Time will tell.
So far 3 days on Blazer 4.0. All my apps are restored via TB and no issues with battery like I had on ICS. Don't really know what else to say. :good:

I'm getting 24+ hours on standby time. I have gotten about 18 hours with about 3 hours of screen time. Facebook and GBA emus. I wasn't able to do this since GB. I have done this by doing one simple thing. Turning off data. I kid you not. Utilize that data toggle. I know at first you're thinking no I need data. But you don't. Unless you're some business person, then this excludes you. Wanna check Facebook?
Also, wii benefit from something else. 4G WiMax. You can turn that on even though your data is off. You still get decent battery life since 4GWiMx knows how to sleep. Also, if you're driving around, it'll pick up 4G eventually (unless you don't have it) and it'll download what it needs to download. So by time it turns loses signal, you'll have your emails. I tried this and I still got good battery life.
Using Battery Monitor Widget, I was able to see that my phone wasn't "sleeping". That's what the main problem was. That's why I wasn't able to find any rogue apps using Better Battery Stats. But I did see my phone stayed awake. Like once my phone died in 5 hours. 10 minutes screen time. 6 minutes of deep sleep. Really? That means my phone was awake for over 4 hours!? Doing what!? No app was at fault.
Extra stuff. No need to read if you felt you read enough
An app you all should check out...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...av_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNjYzcxLmJtdyJd
Battery Monitor Widget (It's not just a widget. LoL!!)
It tells you how many #mA your phone is using. So if it shows 500mA. That means your phone is using 500mA per hour. Your phone has an 1800mA battery. So that means if your phone used a constant 500mA, it would die in 3.5 hours. This is a good way to see just how much power your apps are using, or if after 10 minutes your phone is actually sleeping. My phone actually started using 2mA. I haven't seen that since GB. I thought my phone would never sleep like that again. I cried.
P.S. If you get the app, in settings -> Calibration, change the battery amount from 1500mA to 1800mA. Apparently the app thinks our battery is 1500mA. Or maybe my battery REALLY IS 1500mA. I mean, it got my Nexus 7 battery correct. I didn't have to change it. I've always wondered why BMW said I had a 1500mA battery instead of 1800mA. I may have to look into. Wii all should probably look into that.
Also, those on Blazer ICS ROM. Using BMW, I was able to see something quite interesting. My phone would use a lot of energy. Like 1000mA just to send some text messages, or scroll through my app drawer. BUT, after I stopped using my phone for about 10 minutes, I'd turn it back on and BMW would show my phone gaining #mA, or charging. This means something is causing the phone to "drain", or show drainage, when there really isn't. The fact that the phone charges back means it never really used that much energy in the 1st place. But that only happens on this ROM. Since I figured out the data thing, I'm going to try CM9 again.

EXTREME Battery Loss (CM9)

Greetings!
I am currently using a Sprint Epic 4g (SPH-D700) with ICS (CM9-epicmtd) and the regular Cyanogenmod kernel. I have followed the guides on here and on the CM9 forums for battery life including blacklisting certain apps, changing settings, messing around with performance settings, etc. With all of that, I usually get around a 4 hour battery with normal use (Spotify Music, GVoice Messaging, Occasional Reddit App), during school I have to charge it every other class or else it will die. I have become used to carrying my charger around but I think I figured something out so I wanted to know your ideas on it.
At home, I only use Wifi, I turn off 3g access. I can get 8hour battery at home. But right as I turn on 3g, I get MAJOR battery drain and the phone gets extremely hot.
I just wanted to know, is it the phone? The battery? The OS?
Thanks
-Dier

It will show you what processes/apps are eating battery. I'd also suggest you do a dry run with turning off all sync/streams/data usage for a day or so to see how the battery reacts. Chances are good that you also have an old battery.

Didn't wanna make a whole new thread so I hope this would be the right place to post this since I also want to know "is it the phone, the battery, or the os?" lol.
I'm having terriblee battery results with my phone. Its been happening for like 3 weeks now and I thought the reason was because my batteries got wet (I have like 5 batteries, 4-1500 mAh, and 1-1800mAh). They all die pretty quick I can get about 2-2 1/2 hours of screen time in about 12-14 hours. Which is terrible cuz I have screenshots that I randomlly took of my battery from before and there's times where I would get 4hrs of screen time on in about 20 hours total or I could go about 30 hours with 3 hours of on screen time. I've tried different ROMs and even odined to stock and tested things out and still my phone dies super quick.
My questions:
When the battery has water damage the little paper tab thingy turns pink right? What if it is removed completely?
And is there anyway that my phone just isn't working right because of having damaged battery?
Because right now I'm using a 3500 mAh battery and I'm getting almost the same results that I used to get with my 1500 mAh ones.
Does anyone know anything I could try to see what happens lol?

[Q] Heat issue and uber fast battery drain

Hi
got an EPIC 4G
it heats up excruciatingly while charging , especially from top back area

Mines was the same way. Mine even drained when the power was OFF. Some things I noticed is that on wifi, it drains less. When not on wifi, if I have a weak signal, it gets warm and drains like nobody's business (4hrs like yours). Turn off 4G. Turn off bluetooth when not in use. Make sure the gps is not on. Some people say that this doesnt matter because the gps will come on only when needed, but I noticed a difference. Stop some of your programs / apps from running in background, or stop them from booting at start if you dont use them much (do this with ALL IN ONE TOOLBOX on PlayStore). Lastly, let the battery go through a full discharge a couple of times... this is all that I can think of as of now. HTH.
Just my 2 cents, but it seems like my phone heats up more when on stock and cm7, compared to cm10.1. Heat issues and battery drain virtually gone on cm10.1, but a pesky random reboot bug that I can't figure out.
What rom are you running, and are you using a 3rd party battery?
