So I was watching this great video on youtube and I noticed at around 3:06 the guy brings up a "recent apps" menu by pressing ctrl+tab (cmd+tab) on his keyboard. Frankly I prefer this simple interface to the one that you usually get when you use the multitasking button.
Does anyone know to bring this up without using a hardware keyboard?

That's the old version of the multitasking menu from 2.x versions where you long pressed home. I believe some custom ROMs offer this option instead of the 4.x style of multitasking.

Couldn't tell you (I've not even rooted yet), but I remember for my other devices with ICS ROMs, it offered either the recent apps from 2.x or the original multitasking 4.x version.
Hopefully someone else can chime in.

Tried it but it only brings up the same menu that the dedicated button does.
I am looking for something similar to the picture in OP.
I'm giving this a bump in case someone knows the solution
This recent apps style is still present in ICS, it's just not the default. When some people over in the Nexus S forum were trying to reassign the hard search key to make it trigger recent apps in ICS, they were successful but their recent apps looked like the pic above (they have since fixed this "problem"). If you could find the command that triggers the above style of recent apps, you could reassign our recent apps button to it. Hope this helps.

In the past few days I'm using Executive Assistant as my lockscreen replacement, and it's very complete: it is very customizable, and shows all your unread emails, sms, unanswered calls, upcoming events etc.
The only thing I don't like is that if I press the home button, the stock lockscreen kicks in, and I cannot find a way to get rid of it for good.
Has anyone found a solution for this? I would like Executive Asssitant to be the only lockscreen on my phone.
Thanks!
This is the URL to the app developer: http://www.appventive.com/executive-assistant
Try downloading Home Switcher from the Market, then launch the app.
If Executive Assistant is in the list, then tap Clear default at the bottom, scroll down, tap Clear defaults, press the Back softkey, press the Home button, then check the Set as default box before tapping Executive Assistant.
use the app called "no lock".

Thank you, but apparently doens't work with the Galaxy S2!!
So far the only lockscreen replacement that works flawlessly is GoTO, but I don't like it so much.

Executive Assistant doesn't show in the list so, if I got it right, the problem is with ADW Launcher: basically whatever lock screen replacement I choose, when I hit the home button ADW recalls the stock lockscreen.
Any replacement I choose is simply laid on top of the stock one, instead of substituting it.
So Executive Assistant is just an app and not a home/lockscreen replacement.
Dunno where to go from here, sorry.

So that's it, then? Is there NOTHING that gives basic missed notifications about calls/texts/emails etc with names on the lockscreen for android that works efficiently or smoothly?? I've searched and searched this forum and the market and even bought and tried widgetlocker with the Missed It! app which seemed to be the closest thing to what I've been searching and it didn't work. I mean, close, but no cigar. It was very inaccurate (said there were missed things when there weren't). Does it have to do with another of apple's f'ing "patents"? I just want to know, if anyone can help out, if this exists or not so I can stop my mindless searching that has been eating up my time for the past 3 days.Thanks all.
Oh, on samsung galaxy s3. at&t but i'm searching all over the forums.
Okay so I'm sure this probably isn't important to that many people but one of the things I really hated about ICS is the disappearance of the menu button. I don't like the way Google changed things by adding another dotdotdot menu button inside apps, because a lot of times that menu button is at the top of the screen.
This is a problem because this phone is HUEG. Trying to reach that menu button with one hand makes me afraid I'm going to drop my device.
Anyway for most of my time on the GNex I've used Apex ROM, which has had the option to bring back the big menu button which is always visible and fits in line with the rest of the buttons, like so:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

}
Big menu button, right in front of the back button. While the placement is not the best in the world (I'd prefer the back-menu-home-taskswitcher arrangement personally) at least it has the big button. Most other ROMs seem to only have the ability to enable the legacy app dotdotdot menu button permanently.
Now, Apex has been updated and the big menu button is gone, instead replaced with the option to permanently enable the dotdotdot menu button that ICS uses for legacy apps. I don't like this, because it's off-center, looks bad and is more annoying to press.
I'm not particularly keen on sticking with an old version of a ROM if I can avoid it.
My question is this: is there another, or more than one, GNex ROM that lets me have a big menu button as well as keeping my must-have features (longpress volume keys to skip music tracks, multiple lockscreen shortcuts, notification power widget and all that jazz)?
As much as I like Apex (and the dev will be looking into re-adding the big menu button) I'd also like to check out other potential ROMs as well if they also have the big menu button.
I'm rocking foxhound Black Ed 0.6.. uses apex which I prefer and looks like this:

I'm using SlimICS and although the menu button isn't deault, you can set it up how you described, and I'd imagine several of the other ROMS such as AOKP have the ability.
In Slim all you need to do is go to the Advanced Slim Settings and make changes to how many/which keys you want in the "Navigation bar" section, and then change "Menu visibility" to "Always show invisible icons". Now you have the menu button as a regular key, but the three dots don't show.
Strongly agree with your complaint. Came from a gingerbread device here. Had my nexus only a week but gone thru several roms... try liquid smooth. You can customize the hell outta the buttons.
Or try straight AOKP. So many settings, this is one of the basic, easy to change ones.

HOW TO ENABLE PIE WITH STATUS BAR
1. Go into Settings
2. Scroll to Customization
3. Select Hybrid Properties
4. Select Interface
5. In workspace slide Nav. bar to "0%"
6. Click Apply
7. Exit to home screen
8. Press and drag finger up
WoW! I think I actually might like this!
FYI: AOKP MR3 just released a way to hide the nav bar and a quick swipe up enables the nave bar to reappear. Just like WebOS!
My problem with PIE is when I have it set to either right side or bottom (easiest to access) it cuts off half of my backspace button on my keyboard as it is reserved for swiping in and PIEing from the right or its hard to click my space bar or punctuation marks if I have it set to the bottom.
Is there anyway to avoid this? Like preferably have it set to force swiping from the bezel, rather than allowing a majority of the finger to be on the screen when swiping up. I've messed with all of the launch setting sizes to no avail.
I have the same problem with my keyboard when pie is set to the bottom. I do not know of any fix. In a few days or so there will be a new release of PA with some impressive fixes that they have done. Take a look at they're (PA) Google+ page.

This is a great app that adds pie to your screen. Back, home, and recents. You must turn it on in accessibility and reboot your phone.
Check it out.
Remeber: You can drag and drop pie on any edge.

I hate the pie thing frankly, and it usually gets in the way of my usability of things like texting or anything on the botton screen. PA and PACMAN have this and it's so frustrating you can't turn that **** off.

I don't know what version of PA you were running but pie has always been an optional feature on the "mothership" & original version of PA built for the Nexus 4 by @molesarecoming & gang.
I used full screen / expanded desktop with pie the greater majority of the time since Nexus 4's release and it was the best Android experience I've ever had. I honestly never had a problem with PA's pie getting in the way at the bottom, especially with the "trigger area" adjustable setting. Sorry to hear it wasn't such a good experience for you man!

I'm sure there was a bunch of time spent on it but with PACMAN (which includes PA) there is no way to turn it off. Another thing that bugged me about PACMAN (I dont remember if it did this at the time that I used just straight up PA) but it included the software back/home/menu keys whatever you call that. I much prefer hardware buttons to software ones (software just takes up real estate) and they'd be enabled by default even on samsung devices.
Anyways thanks for working on PA though!
Is there a way to shut screen off with out the power button.
double tap on the statusbar to put it to sleep in Nova launcher. Its an extra step to unhide the statusbar if u have it set to auto hide in nova..but its easier than finding the power button.

Install Screen Off and Lock from the Play Store, assign double tap in Nova (Prime) to use that app et presto :good:

Set the gesture to a shortcut, choose Nova activities, scroll down System UI, then choose one of the two actives for recent apps. One is the old KK recents, and one is for Lollipop recents. Not sure which is which. I think the top option might be Lollipop.

G4 Looks like this.
That SHOULD be it. If it's not working, then it's not working, though.
I'd trouble shoot by trying that gesture on Action Launcher. It had a native "open recents" gesture that worked with the G3 without having to do this workaround that we used in Nova. If it still works in AL3, I'd message the Nova dev and point out that accessing recents on Nova with the G4 is broken. I should hopefully have a G4 this afternoon (going on my lunch). If you don't have a paid copy of AL3 to test yourself, I will if I can.
News:
Now Nova (prime of course) offers the knock off feature without any other app needed.
Look on gestures!
