looks nice but with quad core phones appearing in the near future i'll hold on to my upgrade
im just waiting to see how battery life is...if its the best of the lte phones...might be worth it...as its a nice upgrade (well based on rumoured specs) over inc2
but id buy it knowing its a 2012 "mid-tier" phone rather than latest and greatest

I'm not sure you'd really need a quad lol. I'm like my single core rind better than some dual core phones, so i'm not worried about the cores but rather screen resolution.
HELP !!!!
I know this probably is not the place for this question but maybe help me get to right forum or help me fix this if possible either way is great
I bought evo4g it had cyan7 on it i do not like cyan sooooo i tried re rooting it i took and unrooted phone back to android 2.2 and started there got to the z4 part of the root and phone spazzed instead of a # sign in the cmd promp i got a > so i pulled usb cable went back and started over again ,,,,,, apparently should not have doe that now what i have is a phone that will boot but after @ 1.5 minutes or so it vibrates 5 times and goes black. I do a reset to get to the bootloader but I have no recovery option it tries to load the pmg36 file but says no img found on all attempts i never get the green screen to flash from zip file,,,, I think all files needed for root are on the sd card or can be put there by just copy and paste from computer if I use a sd adapter to copy over the files but then I cant acess them from phone... is there any fix or am I now the proud owner of a EVO 4G paperweight ..... BTW this is what bootloader screen says
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-2.10.0001

TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16AB
RADIO-2.15.00.11.19

HBOOT
<VOLUP etc...
THEN
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
HBOOT USB
next screen says
bootloader
reboot
reboot bootloader
power down
when i go recovery it just goes to a red triangle and locks.
any advice would help

The 2 phones I've been keeping an eye on is the galaxy s3 and I just seen the HTC zeta. I'm just sick of sense and sense 4 was not impressive
Sweet, the specs sound fantastic.
Inside source at vzw hints as a late quarter 2 incredible upgrade. I am not sure I believe it will be this or if the guy has any real idea. I would expect to see something greater than a dual core or. Dual core greater than 1.2. There isn't much on the show room floor that will move me from the Inc2 though.

That phone looks impressive. Too bad I wouldn't have an upgrade any time soon for it.
Meh, I doubt this phone is going to have a dual core processor. With all the devices coming out with quad core it would be a bad move on htcs part to release a device like that.

I disagree. I think the Inc2 is still a very popular phone & its almost a year old... Sorry, I don't think anyone needs a quad-core phone.

Hopefully LTE is not as unpredictable as their 3G.
Being as I have to pay full price it will have to be Superman's kryptonite to swap the Inc2 anytime soon. I don't see quad core being needed aside from coolness factor, not daily usage anyway for most people. I do think HTC would need to increase speed tho. Moto is already at 1.5 so assume they will be taking another step by the HTC release. Figure I have a good 3months after release waiting on root and s off, people will be selling them off by then or shortly after.
I have to say I really don't like the look of the back of the rumored DInc3. The lower angle looks too much like the v in Verizon. Whether that was intentional or not, I don't know.

After having a hero for over a year it is now time for it to retire. After reading about several revisions to hboot, hardware, and software there seems to be a bit of confusion (for me).

Depends, but it was around middle of January that speculation started for the Evo and we heard about the mysterious A9292 Supersonic, but not much else was known about it. Still, I don't expect Sprint to come out with a device that's significantly better than the Evo until June or later. Dual core smartphones haven't really been released in any country. Snapdragon devices were released around November 2009. You can bet that that duallies will come out in Europe and Asia as a GSM phone at least 3-6 months before a manufacturer pushes out a CDMA device to the states.

The Hero is only good for a year?
The thing is, if you wait til CES then 6-9 months after that, there'll be something else better coming up and you'll want that. I say pick up the EVO now - there's still room to grow for the EVO with gingerbread, and there might not be a radical change in the smartphones that come out next year. 2010 was a pretty big year, all across the industry with Froyo, 4G, 4"+ screens, 1GHz processors, etc. Of course, every year something new comes out, but across the industry 2010 had so many changes I can't see them really topping that for 2011. Especially since we really need battery technology to catch up to handset technology at this point. My guess is that there will be something wildly innovative in 2011 (maybe we'll all be walking around with pads and bluetooths instead of smartphones). But that's just my guess.

Here's my thinking:
The EVO is not future proof but it's not that bad because of CM. It's biggest gaping bottleneck is the GPU and 3.0 looks like it's bringing full on HW acceleration, so it may or may not run on the EVO favorably. I wouldn't take the risk based off of my impression of the 3D gallery (which is HW accelerated and does not run 100% smoothly in the EVO). IMO you should pass on the EVO 4G.
The EVO Shift is a whole lot safer. The HW in it is (or at least should be) very, very similar in performance to the Nexus S, so that considered, I think it's safe to say that it'll run any App or Android version that you throw at it for at least a year - year and a half. Being a HTC product you'll also get a lot of community dev here on XDA and on other sites. I think if you want a new phone now, it's a safe phone to get. The only question mark is whether it has a FFC which may or may not be important to you (but with the inevitable drop of GTalk video chat, I think it should be).
Dual cores: if you want to wait for the latest and greatest be prepared to wait forever.

Yup, the first gen Snapdragon is from 2009 and it's GPU is ancient by current standards -- for comparison even the original Droid's PoweVR SGX 530 GPU was better. The shift should have the smaller, more energy effecient second gen Snapdragon/Scorpion CPU and the newer Adreno GPU that is roughly 3-4 times better.
Also note how I said that the EVO was good but not guaranteed to be as future proof? I'd rather recommend the phone that is worth having in the long run.

Seeing as most people have a phone 1-2 yr tops, the EVO will be just a relevent after 2 years as it was when it was released. Will run great on gingerbread and honeycomb as it does today. Also the shift is not even released and will be outdated before it is. The next round of releases will be dual core and by the time they are ready to hit the streets, the shift will be history.

We don't know how the EVO will run Honeycomb, if at all. Honeycomb looks like it's the first Android version to have full hardware acceleration (2.3 doesn't yet). My one and only observation is that the EVO can chug on the 3D gallery which is HW accelerated and for simple things too - like opening the menu. will that also be the case with Honeycomb? I don't know but should any new customer take the risk?
I originally got the EVO for two reasons: CM declared support and since the EVO had the same internals as the Nexus One I knew that it would at least run most of the newer Android stuff through the year. While not the same, the CPUs in the Hummingbird and second gen Qualcomm CPUs are very similar and the GPUs are pretty much on par in terms of performance. So my rational is: anything the Nexus S will run, the Shift will probably be able to run too. The same can not be said of the EVO.

Of course you don't. The EVO is the most perfect phone ever made, there will never be a more advance phone. Ever. I must have been dreaming when I bought my parents the Optimus S (which has the same GPU but runs at a lower resolution), played around with the 3D gallery app and saw that it was 60 FPS smooth while my EVO was running at under 30 FPS for certain actions. Yeah, that must of been it.
Look, I'm giving my recommendation. Live with it. Make you own and let the OP decide.

I picked up the EVO for literally the exact same reasons. Everybody knew before the phone was released that it was running a QSD8650. Asus ran it in their EeePc middle of last year, and its been available to manufacturers since 2008...not exactly state of the art. Plus the adreno200 chip is terrible. I doubt anyone here bought the EVO thinking they were getting the top tier in cpu performance lol. Not trying to piss anyone off, but comeon the cpu in the EVO is halfassed compared to current OMAP, Hummingbird, or second gen snapdragons.
At this point honestly I would wait, not for dual core, but simply for Sprint to release something with a second gen processor. To my knowledge the LG Star is the only announced dual core phone at the moment. Its gonna be a bit before we see OEMs dropping dual core phones left and right.
Also the shift is not even released and will be outdated before it is. The next round of releases will be dual core and by the time they are ready to hit the streets, the shift will be history.

The EVO is 6 months old and the Shift is set to be released in about 3 weeks, that's why. Just sayin'.
I say if you can get the optimus S with your premier upgrade for free. get it.....and fleabay it. I did that and made a cool $245. Pocket the money and wait till CES and at least see whats coming out, if nothing peaks your interest then fork in an extra $100 or so and buy a brand new EVO outright on ebay (EVO maybe even cheaper at that point...)
Upgrades arent all about getting a new phone then and there, sometimes you gotta just buy something to "use" up your upgrade and sell the phone that will bring you back the best return. That way your upgrade renews itself quicker and you made some $$$ on the side... my 2 cents if you want to put in a little work.
just wanted to get some opinions. i have a droid x currently. its rooted and i don't have any problems installing custom roms for it. the problem i have is i get bored quick like most of us do and when i go to switch roms, maybe 1 out of 5 times i end up with a brick that i have to flash. its getting a little old. i'm guessing this is because the x isn't completely broken into like the incredible is. my question is, does anyone know of any advantages of the inc over the x. other than screen size and hd video capabilities on the x thats really all i know of that is actually better... any help would be great. thanks!

For me the biggest benefit is the 3.7inch display. The 4.3 is a little too big for me.
For the most part, the speeds and specs are the same. My co-worker has a X and I never really liked it. Not to mention I have a general hate towards Motorola.
The incredible has quite a few ROMs, however I have had HTC phones in the past with many more ROMs available.
I think the incredible is still a player, but with CES coming out next week, it may be a good idea to wait.

Wait for a tegra dual core. Lightning bolt seems like it will be dated not long after launch.
I just find myself becoming an HTC fanboy. I had an Eris that I absolutely loved, and when my daughter threw it in the toilet (It still works btw, just have to replace digitizer), I got the Incredible. I just think they make quality products, the developers are creative and motivated, and you can get them free now. What's not to love? The only thing I would suggest is that if you get one, replace the SD card before you root and flash recovery. A lot of the EVO roms (and some AOSP if I'm not mistaken) won't take advantage of internal memory. It's just easier to avoid the PITA of having 1 gig free after recovery. I learned the hard way.
Also, check out dougpiston.com for a quick and easy one stop resource for rooting/recovery/radio files and instructions.
I hope I'm not violating any policy by posting another site. Cheers! Good luck with whatever you end up getting.

The dinc has 8gb internal storage and and tfcard slot, where the dx only has the tf.
The dinc has full compatibility with rom manager, without giving you that terrible 4 option recovery that overwrites the bootloader.
I have never seen amazing linpack scores from the dx, usually around 20-30 mflops, but I have been able to get around 50 on the latest gingerbread roms on my dinc.
The optical trackpad is a nice feature to have, especially for some games, etc. It also makes text selection a lot more precise, if you prefer aosp to blurred roms, (I think that you might lose the red cursor control, but don't quote me on it)
Other than that, I can't say as if there are any other differences really, but I would say that I'm very satisfied with my dinc, and I'm glad that I chose it over the X.

I do understand that device is newer and updated beyond the screen and camera, but dual core processors and LTE are going to make the lifespan of devices like this relatively short (IMO). I have no doubt that there are many improvements but I just don't see locking myself into a 2 year contract with this.
When Verizon got rid of the one year contract it made me rethink even being on Verizon. I might switch to Sprint for my next phone. I also consider a 4.3" screen to be a requirement for my next phone as well as 1gb ram and a dual core cpu.

I thought the same
throttling of the top 5%
14day return
removal of 1 year contract
Soon to have tiered data
with Sprint you need to be with them for 10 years (their premier program) to receive the 1 year upgrade
I'll wait for the next Inc next year if they have one. The Inc 2 is already dated with a dumbed down version of Sense 2.0, why can't the TB and Inc 2 access HTCSense.com VZW? Very disappointed.

Can't really make up my mind on this phone. I am at the same time disappointed and oddly interested. I was really looking forward to a dual core 3.7" Incredible. Though this still does look like very nice device. Certainly not a good buy IMO however, with the advent of 4g and all the dual core chips coming out, there is no reason to trade my still excellent incredible at this time for an upgraded but still current-generation phone.

IMO, if you have an incredible then this isn't a good enough upgrade. Of course if you have lots of cash and you want the shiny new toy, I wouldn't blame ya- but I'm sure there's going to be some dual core phones coming out pretty soon. That's what I'm waiting for. That and they'd have to be 4G capable.
The incredible is still snappy and fast, my 3G speeds even average around 250kb/s and top out around 325kb/s so really no need for 4G because I can stream movies to my phone without buffer stops- and there's nothing else practical I can think of that would need any more speed than that.
In the Incredible 2 does anyone know if the internal storage on the phone will be any larger then the original, specifically the part that holds the ROM?
The HTC Desire has been a pretty great phone for me, love the physical buttons, and the rooting scene is very very much alive.
Just wondering, will there be a phone that have the same size as the desire, but with updated internals like a dual core processor and more ram? Seems to be trend for bigger screens and any dual core phone is usually 4" and up.
What do you think?

The new samsung is so light you don't even notice the screen size difference in your pocket. Personally I would like to stick with HTC but if you were looking to buy a new phone right now nothing comes close to the samsung in terms of sexiness/thinness and lightness!
EDIT: and of course speed
I think the HTC Sensation ist the model you are looking for.
Same formfactor as Desire and Dualcore and so on.

Except massively locked bootloader, radio and kernel.
Swyped...
HTC have really let me down with their new locked down
Mentality. I also wanted a reasonable size dual core phone
But had to come to the realization that its never gonna happen
(someone prove me wrong and I'll eat my words) so I went for
The galaxy s2. It craps on the sensation. The free ram on that thing
Is appalling and its still choppy in the browser with a dual core.
Come on htc! What have you been doing? Not catching up thats for sure.
I would love sense 3.0 on hardware like the galaxy S2 but we can't have
Everything.

Doesn’t the Sensation have a 4.3” screen compared with the Desire’s 3.7”? I mean I’ve tried to use phones with screens 4” and bigger but it just doesn’t fit right for me....

Thats the thing really, I’m not looking for a phone right now, I can wait for another year or so. But I have always had my eye out for new phones. My 1st smartphone was the 1st gen metal iPhone, I used that since 2007 till my job required me to have a phone without a camera. I got the Desire mainly because I wanted an iPhone-like OS and that I could easily remove the camera module without damaging the rest of the phone. But I’ve fallen in love with the android OS and the amazing variety of phones there are in the market.
HTC as a company is great. I think they’re moving in the right direction. Just that their new phones have locked bootloaders and well, the rooting community is what I really love about the android platform.

Yes, and I agree - I want one with the same physical size as the desire personally...
I want a phone that's quad core, 32GB internal mem, 1GB RAM...
BUT
I want it smaller and thinner than the Desire, and have a battery that lasts a week with heavy use
Seriously, guys - it's not gonna happen. You want more features, the phone will get bigger and have crap battery life. Just enjoy what we have as this is a golden age for mobile phones
Sensation will be my next step.
The unibody is awesome and the specs are too.
I stick to HTC cause I just love their hardware and quality.

I think it's worth waiting till Q4 to change for me, love my Desire and am very keen to have physical buttons(not keyboard) on my next handset but unfortunately it looks like the top handsets will no longer have them.
I'm with the OP on this one. I love my desire, still do, but am keeping my eye out for the next desire-like phone. I suppose the htc desire s is the next logical step, but from what I've been reading, it's not that drastic of a jump and therefore not worth the upgrade. I would have to say htc dropped the ball on this one. The desire s will not reach the same popularity s it's predecessor simply because it doesn't bring enough improvements to the table. While the sensation seems to be the next flagship, the large size, insufficient ram and internal storage are deal breakers for me.

Just read about the google nexus 4g. My interest is piqued, although the "monster" screen size has me worried.

I was going to get nexus s but no led notiffication, no hd recording, less ram than desire and 4 " screen put me off , well not so much the screen but rest of features

Check out nexus 4g, google's third phone. Hopefully they remedy all the issues that were present in the nexus s

Sensation seems to be the logical next step, though gaining root access and S-OFF is a bit of a problem at the moment. Last summer when I bought my Desire, I knew I would not have to change my phone until dual cores kicked in. Well, they came a bit early I'll probably keep my Desire for a year or two more before I move on to dual cores.
I do keep hearing that dual-core processors and Sense 3.0 are not optimized, but that won't be much of a problem once the device is fully rooted and ROMs start cooking. Think of how innocent the stock Desire feels, if you ever for some reason turn back to it. We have a monster now. So, it's all up to devs to figure out a way to root Sensation. After, it's golden.
rant... Disregard...
I was thinking on buying the HTC Sensation but its too big for me...
HTC Desire S didnt evolve much... and I love HTC Desire buttons...
Ill be waiting till IceCream Sandwich!
I know its v picky, but why has HTC switched to shiny buttons for power and volume? They look so tacky. One thing I love about the Desire - it looks muted/classy, not shiny shiny.
On the S Nexus S, I was surprised how little I noticed the increased screen size, v different to the Desire HD which feels massive (there's only a .3 difference, isn't there?)

I hate those physical buttons. They were OK when I bought the phone a year ago. Now I have to press twice or press them really hard to make them work... But I don't like the touch buttons on my gf's Wildfire S as well so I'm kinda stuck...

I can't wait to see next gen exynos.
I seriously hope it's based around Cortex A15.
WHy must samsung always have the best CPUs?
The best single core cpu was the exynos gen 1"Hummingbird"
Best dual core is exynos gen 2 "Orion"
Oh and the new Mali chip should sexy as hell.
Meh, decent specs but HTC is merely playing catchup with the s2 specs. Non removable batteries and no external sdcards, the one s pentile screen lol whats HTC trying to do become the next motorola, those phones are gimped! Nah ill pass till the s3 Mali 568 or omap 5 Socs arrive.

i will switch always liked htc phones and sense...this one had beats and that is why i will go for it..
If HTC really wanted to embrace the hacker community why even lock the boot loader at all? Love Samsung and they ease they let you "hack" your own phone, and more love to the developers of our phone.

I refuse to buy a phone with no removable battery and no external SD option. If I were going to accept those standards then I'd own an iPhone (which I don't).
This may be unavoidable at some point but as long as I have the option to avoid it then I'm going to take it.

They're trying to please carriers and save face with the number crunching departments. They offered a compromise and nearly everyone went for it. Its sad its like that but I am glad Samsung has done decent by us.

The phone posted the highest benchmark ever....without an overclock. I'm quite sure it isn't "catching up."
When is HTC going go start using hardware acceleration throughout their ui yucky lag
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Well I for one will be getting it to replace my Evo 3D. I've grown accustomed to having both HTC's & Samsung's top phones on my hip so I guess this will continue the tradition but will probably pass on the Galaxy Nexus and wait for the SG III.

Next gen phone with a camera thats comparable to old gen stuff.
Plus no sd or removable battery.
Nice screen and processor but my phone is smooth with out the 2 extra cores.
And i dont want 2 years for just a screen difference.
Plus I love touchwiz features like the notification toggles, status bar brightness and swipe to call or text.

I meant one s not s2,i slept on htc for so long that dont even know their names, lol.
I have a serious problem with those recent apps previews. It's actually hurting me right now.
Why half-ass toning down sense? At the beginning of the video I was actually impressed with how much closer to AOSP it was but it seriously let me down as the video went on.
Also, the ripple effect when scrolling is completely unnecessary. Such a waste of power...

The rumor mill claims that the Sprint variant of the One X will be the Evo One, and include micro sd slot, 720p AMOLED screen, and a much-improved battery (still non-removable).
Should be taken with a grain of salt obviously, but if those improvements were a reality (plus the return of the kickstand, which I loved on my Evo 4g)... I'd be pretty tempted. But not making any decisions until I see the GS3
