What is the mhs feature for Verizon? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm coming from Sprint with unlimited data (1X and 3G on a good day) and switched to Verizon last week with the 5gb plan to find out 3 days in to my contract I've used 2.5gb (do the math). Btw I used 2.5 gigs in 3 days downloading all my old apps, playing with 4G (first time ever using 4G in 2 years.. coming from the OG EVO 4G, Evo 3D, NS4G and the SGS2ET4G and NEVER seeing any 4G), a little internet radio etc.
I saw on AC forums they were talking about the mhs loop hole for $29 a month. Anyone have any insight to this because now I'm stuck to wifi at work and home and love the 4G speeds.
Thanks,
Chef
PS. You guys will be seeing a lot of me now. Hope the mods have a better sense of humor over here.

Hey I remember seeing you in the 3D forums!
I thought they shut down the MHS loophole a while ago, I might be wrong though.
I had to learn some hard lessons my first couple of days. After redownloading a couple of games I was at 748mb. I used to laugh at all those warnings that the additional game data should be downloaded via wifi. They are not so funny anymore. Don't forget the data usage in the settings.

It doesn't work anymore.

Verizon is bringing back the double data plan in a few days. Once its back call customer care and you will get 10GB for the same price.
Its not unlimited but its better than most.

Lol. You're not kidding they're not funny anymore. I too used to laugh at the warnings when I was on sprint (if the bastids only had 4g or even 3g in my area) now its like oh ****!
Kind of a catch 22 I've gotten myself into.
With Verizon I get unbelievable 4G speeds but have to use wifi because I've found 5g ain't ****. When you've always had unlimited you dont keep track.
On Sprint I get 400-500 kbps on a good day with unlimited data but used wifi because I was sick of crawling.
Might be worth getting the 10g package but I honestly don't think that's enough. Smh.
Thanks for the tips guys.

Yup, I remember ya from the 3v0 forums.
You'll love Verizon 4G, so easy to eat data tho. If you don't stream a lot of music, don't tether a lot and use Wi-Fi, you can manage under 4GB, but it's still limiting and it sucks.
I got unlimited with MHS 2 months ago and used 18GBs my first month (Road trip to Miami, used 4g/3g tethering a whole lot) and used 15GB last month. I stream all my music via google music (over 18000 songs!)
I was going to get the 10gb package. If you can still somehow get unlimited (I almost bought out someone's old contract with a phone for free, but then verizon wanted a $125 deposit and I'd probably not keep my number, but then MHS appeared to save the day!)

[Q] Coming to sprint from t-mobile..

So I've been on t-mobile for quite a few years now, and this throttling bs is getting at me. I'm considering to come to sprint, and get the evo 4g. its 99.99 with a contract. but i have a few questions..
1- is rooting the evo 4g simple? i have a mt4g with t-mobile and rooting was simple.
2- what are the 4g speeds like? I get 4g in my area and when i went to a couple of sprint stores to test the speed using speed test in the market, i got speeds ranging from 1mbps to almost 4mbps. with t-mobile, i get on average about 4 and at my home, 7ish. I wanted to know opinions on the 4g speed because i use it a lot for tethering.
3- is it possible to bypass the 29.99 charge for mobile hotspot with sprint so i can get it for free? and if so, is it fairly simple?
I really want the unlimited data. that's the only reason I want to move to sprint. yeah i use my phone for voice and texts, but these days, data seems pretty important too and i hate being throttled.
If anybody has any advice for coming to sprint, or reasons why I shouldn't; I would appreciate that as well.
Thanks in advance for questions and advice..
1) You can not root brand new EVOs at this time (HBOOT: 2.16, Android 2.3.3). This applies to most you get as replacements for insurance claims too.
2) 4G uses very high frequency, and thus can be hit or miss. I live in a full coverage area and can't pickup 4G until I go down the street to the intersection. Thus, I can't comment, but I heard the speeds are decent but slower than Verzion
3) Perhaps, if you are able to root. I never use this feature so you'll have to wait for someone else.
P.S. if you still want a new EVO, shop around. You might be able to get it free or a penny from places like Amazon Wireless.
1. No root for current EVO coming out.
2. Fair 4G speeds for me KC, MO.
3. Hacked hotspot or wireless tether app.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
rooting evo 4g is simple
1. Not currently. The current GB version of the EVO has no known root method. It is almost certain you would get a GB EVO if you bought one today. If you are able to check it, and its Froyo (Android 2.2) then yes, its easy.
2. WiMax 4G depends a lot on where you are, and its notoriously bad at penetrating inside large buildings. I have rarely seen slower than 2mbps when I have signal, and upwards to 10mbps. I would put the average at 4-6. Depends a lot on your location and signal strength.
3. To do wireless tethering without paying the tethering fee requires root. See point 1. If you can root, then yes its easy. You can tether through a wired USB connection without root and without paying, see several options available on market (pda.net for example).
You have 30 days to try it out, take one home, see how your 4G is.
The questions have been answered it seems but I would like to ad that I came from T-Mobile too and have never been happier. Whether you go EVO 4g 3d or another device you will enjoy. My plan rates are lower, I phone choices are higher. Just overall better.
I will ad this. Root on cdma is not the same. It had a slight learning curve not having a him card but if you are familiar with rooting then you should have no issues.
When T-Mobile came out with the vibrant 4g as their next best thing I knew it was time to move on. They just have never put out quality phone CHOICES its always been "here is are great device" the rest are just ok. Vibrant 4g was basically the vibrant 3g with a 4g antenna and front camera. No thanks.

Punctuation fail.
Also, "being worked on" could very easily turn out to mean "never gonna happen." I think it was an apropos warning, if a bit pessimistic.
Thanks for all the advice. I'm really debating whether to jump up to the 10gb data with tmobile or just jump ship to sprint. I've been debating all day and want to decide in the next day or so. What's the wiimax 4g? and what's the thing I hear about sprint planning on going to 4g lte?

Hmmm. I don't remember ever asking for your response. Also you're the one trying to be pessimistic. Most of you are so negative. I can pretty much say for sure that there will be root for stock EVOs coming 2.3.3. Now how about you shut the hell up and take your negativity somewhere else. Yes there is a difference between Realism and negativity, yours is negativity. Take it somewhere else.

Here is the thing about the T-Mobile data plan..... it's governed. You are more than welcome to surf the t-mobile phone forums to back this up. Sprint is not.....yet.
The lte migration won't happen until you want a new phone anyways so I wouldn't worry too much on that. Even then Sprint I am sure will be showering us with phones.
I used to be the biggest T-mo fanboy so understand that me saying run is a big deal.

I came from T-Mobile as well. I loved my 4G speeds but the plans were too high and the data cap was a pain. I love my sprint service. I just wish they would "beef" up the 4G or stop charging $10 in areas its weak or non-existent. I can only get it is on my porch or near the kitchen window but even with a weak (1 bar)signal its been 3.5 mb or faster. I sometimes think of going back for the data speed+ coverage alone but with the money I save and the uncapped unlimited data I think its enough to stay. We won't have LTE for at least 1 to 2 years from now. So Wimax will be running until the buildout is complete.
Sent from hell.

Is it worth switching for 15mbps down but no unlimited?

Im currently fed up with Sprint's .30mbps download in my area. I was thinking about switching to Verizon for the Galaxy Nexus, but I couldn't imagine giving up my anymobile any time or unlimited data. Even though the data is slow and terrible now, in 1 year or more, they will have lte (maybe) and then I would kill myself for not just waiting it out.
As I said in another thread milling over what-to-do regarding the same decision:
Being over-charged for data you get is preferable to being charged anything for data you don't get.
Sounds like you already answered your question.

I kind of did. I'm just stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I really started noticing slow data when I got my Evo 4G the day it came out. I'm in Phoenix and I still don't have 4G. I've waited 2 years since I got the evo 4g to get 4g and over that period of time, 3g just keeps getting slower and slower. Im sitting on the second floor of my house with 4 out of 6 bars getting .32mbps. I can see the tower from my window because its on a light pole at the school a block away from me.
Faster data just means you get to your cap faster.
What's the point?
I use WiFi enough that it doesn't matter to me.

Holding out for sprint lte may be worth it if you're in a big city where you can almost guarantee it coming and they keep it unlimited. You may want to stay month to month until u decide

I'm in Los Angeles - pretty big city. They've had about 2 years to get wimax working here- I get about 500k when I actually can connect to 4G before it drops. How many years you going to wait for LTE to be acceptable in a "big" city? Ask people in NYC how much they are enjoying the "fast" Wimax they are receiving.
Oh and how is that unlimited working out for people who bought data connections - do you really think Sprint who was the first to charge $10 for rich data experience on newer cells is not going to stiff you on unlimited data soon? if they ever did offer decent data speeds, I'm sure they'd charge another $10 or $25 for an "enhanced" data experience.
If I'm thirsty and someone said I can have 5 gallons of water as fast as I can drink it or I can have one teaspoonful per hour each month with no limit - I'll take the 5 gallons.

Nothing like downloading a movie in under ten minutes... better be a good movie though since that uses up a good chunk of the 2GB you get per month.
Sorry, but it has to be about more than just raw speed.
This is like saying "I have a Lamborghini! But I can only drive in 40 miles a month"
The real question is, does 2mbit/s do it for you?
Because I don't know one thing you can't do on a phone [from stream music to streaming video] at 2mbit/s.

A lot of people seem to miss the point here. Yeah, you can get to the cap faster, but getting the faster speed is really just expecting you to use the same data amount, you just get it faster.

Well thats not entirely fair. 2GB isn't that much. In Cleveland I get great 4g speeds and good
(just as good as Verizon) 3g speeds, my biggest complaint is Toledo speeds (attrocious) where i'm spending most of my time nowadays, which is the main reason sprint isn't working for me great right now.
I'd switch if I didnt save tons of money on sprint (24% discount on top of their cheap plan), but I was just saying verizons biggest feature is LTE which sprint is supposed to have in 8 months or less, and 200+ markets in 2013.
No need to dog my suggestion, sprint is still cheaper than every other carrier but if their lte is unlimited and no extra charge other than the 10/Mo charge they already have, sprint will be very attractove.
switching to verizon/att on a 2yr contract is a big deal, much more pricey than sprint too. Unless you are well under 2GB and have unlimited pockets staying month to month til lte pricing is announced isn't bad.
I get your frustration, but coverage in your area is different. Sprint guarantees certain speeds for 3g/4g so if you're not meeting those call and they should let u cancel.

I am in the same boat, I drop calls left and right at my house and I recently moved and the data is just pure horrible.
I never go over 2 gb a month, The max I ever used was 3.5gb and that was when I first got the evo3d and I was doing speedtests left and right. I stream radio and music my way to work and from work. Now I have the gs2.
If I go verizon I will start out with 2 and I will just pay 10 bucks for the next 1gig and I am sure I will never go over that and my monthly discount will make up for that difference.
I used to get decent speeds at work but ever since the iphone launch I cant even hit half a meg, in the city I live I never hit even quarter mb ever since I moved here. I work in sacramento and the speeds on 3g have gotten worse, even 4g is capped at 2mb now it seems.
This! Over thr past few months I average maybe 3-4gb a month on Sprint, 3g mmostly as 4g iis way inconsistent and I a tired of data drops and awful battery life on it.
That being said, during peak hours incdenver, Sprint 3g is crawling in places I get 2mbps during off peak hours. Lately, at my gym, I can't even stream Pandora cuz it's so slow. I ended up getting tmobile for 14 days and I got about 7mbps average pretty much everywhere! Why'd I cancel? G2x was a letdown and I get sprint free. But seriously, caps are caps and I docsee myself aas being a heavy user and oon mobile, 5gb is plenty. I'm mobile a lot and rarely in one place to use wifi, I'd like to be on a network where, oh I dunno, I can at least stream youtube and not get stuck at 100-300kbps?

Did you hit 11GB through phone usage or through tethering? My home internet provider in my building went out of business so I had to start tethering and I hit 18GB of 4G. From what I understand, Sprint doesn't care as long as you aren't roaming. Before tethering, I would go through about 3-4GB a month.

300GB? I think that would be a pretty good reason on their part. He's using 20-30X the amount of data the average data hog here uses (or admits to using). And that's 300X the amount of data the average user (people who live in the 21st century and have wifi at home) uses.
That's obnoxious even compared to other abusers!
Other than illegally downloading warez, I can' think of a single legitimate way a normal person could go through that much bandwidth. Even streaming Netflix... that's 300+ movies (from my experience watching data use on the phone). The hogs here who stream Pandora every day even stay in the low 2 digits of data use.
That idiot friend deserves to get booted!
I hit around 1.3GB last month on 4G (Usage reset yesterday). And I used around a Gig or so on 3G. Im typically always on Wifi though, so my data isnt as high as it would be if it werent for me using Wifi. I get AWESOME 4G coverage at my apartment too
used +8gbs of 4g on primary line this past month, streaming like crazy....bought nba league pass, only use google cloud music for music and heavy surfing. im not worried about overages, ive got a smarthphone to use not stare at.
as for that 300gb claim....id say youre friend is just a douche and didnt even come close to that. i doubt you could even pull 300 gigs of data in a month due to poor sprint coverage/service
The most I ever used was 6.5 gigs and that's because I was testing this torrentlt client on my phone. Lol I downloaded the entire Naruto series.

I think you're good...a lot of us have hit high numbers for one reason or another and if you actually have a good signal and utilize your phone for streaming music and uploading pics, etc its not hard to hit a higher number.
When I moved to a new place a few months ago I tethered my revue and two laptops for a couple of weeks until I had broadband hooked up and hit 48 gigs...no letters in the mail. I get great 4G at home and 3G for that matter and average around 10 gigs a month combined usage. Sprint is great if you're in a strong signal area.
I don't understand why a home ISP internet provider can give you all the data you want but cell companies decided to cap people and offer tiered plans. It is not like it cost them more if I use 2 gigs or 4 gigs of data.
Is is a real shame that mobile providers took this direction with data. Getting anything more then the 2 or 3 gig plan just makes your cell phone bill an outrages unaffordable price.
Sprint is great that they still offer unlimited data but when you are using 3G and getting 40kbs what is the point? How could Sprint have ever let there network get this bad. When I had the EVO 4G and I never needed to turn of 4G. Since it killed the battery within hours I was able to use 3G for anything I wanted to without a problem.
Now, if you are not in a 4G area, you phone is almost useless as far as data is concerened. Streaming anything is almost near impossible.
If Sprint actually fixes their network and has LTE 2 years from now I am sure they will not be unlimited either. If they were to tier now, why would anyone in their right mind stay with them? Like Sprint took everything else away from their customers, unlimited data will be next. They just need a network that they can pull that BS on...
Depends on who your ISP is.
ATT has a 100gb limit, and I get a lousy 2.5mbs for $38 month...
Comcast has a 250gb limit.

There may not be a direct monetary cost, but bandwidth being consumed by one user is bandwidth unavailable for other users to use; it is a rival resource. Users who use a large amount of data place a higher burden on the network than users who use a typical amount and cause data speeds for these users to be lower than they would be otherwise. This reduction in service quality experienced by other users could cause them to leave the network and cost the service provider.

DSL users are capped at 150GB, U-Verse has no cap since AT&T can't distinguish the TV usage from actual internet usage, so they don't cap that at all.

I remember this! It was Unbelievably fast. ...

[Q] Evade Throttling/Data Cap? [tmobile]

So I recently switched from Sprint to Tmo. And so far I can say the speeds are at least 3x faster if not more. Which is great! The only thing is I'm not used to a data limit so I'm scared to even use data if I can't find wifi. But I forced myself to use pandora and memedroid with some mild app downloading and before I started using my hotspot, I managed to hit 700mb with 1-2 weeks left in my cycle. So 2.5gb is pretty good imo data and price wise.
Then, as I was celebrating my birthday yesterday at my friends house, I decided to try out my hotspot (Stock rom) and watch some netflix. Watched ONE episode of south park and pushed my data to around 1.1gb. Figuring I was just about at the end of my cycle, and wanting to see how bad throttling could be, I decided to use it again and stream a comedy special and reached within about 45 minutes.
Dear god I had no idea throttling could be so terrible. I was figuring 3g speeds comparable to sprints network (Which is still somewhat terrible) but this 2g is HORRENDOUS! 15kb just makes me want to cry. I'm amazed we don't even get dial-up speeds. But at least they don't charge overages which is nice, so no real complaints.
Answer me this though, I've seen a few threads mentioning unrestricted hotspots and came across this thread which talks about evading the throttle. Is this still possible; and what exactly does it mean to unrestrict the hotspot? Say I upgrade to unlimited, I remember hearing it throttles after like 5-10gb even with unlimited, is this true?

I'm using jovy's Darthstalker ROM and the unrestricted hotspot is still working great. And if you have the truly unlimited data plan they do not throttle you at all, since switching to it back in September I have routinely hit 20-30 GB a month and not been slowed down.
I've used 7.1gb of my unlimited plan and no throttle, also I've used over 10gb and no throttle either.. As far as the hotspot, I think it still works but I've read people saying that no matter what you do they will eventually find out and block the hotspot access

I was on a 5gb plan before and would cap 2 weeks in. I upgraded to unlimited data with no cap and I ended up reducing my bill by 6 or dollars.

I can't say because I don't use tethering, but that's what I have seen people say.. just go ahead and try it, the only thing they will do is block the hotspot access till your bill is due, no throttle
Edit: nevermind I was thinking you asked something else lol i forgot you didn't have unlimited data

Sprint + LG OG = I finally effing have LTE!

Sad that's it's taken me this long to actually have LTE on my own personal phone. It's almost 20damned14 afterall. I am easily the biggest (in real life) phone nerd I know yet am the last to have and experience LTE.
I've never owned a wimax enabled phone so Sprints insistence that I DO live in and am blanketed by "4G" services are crap and have only made me hate them more recently.
I've even worked for both Verizon AND now AT&T for the better part of the last 3 years. Great LTE companies! First as a contractor and now as a full time AT&T employee (still have a week or so to wait for my att work phone to come in) but I've never had a true phone of my own that actually had LTE.....
UNTIL TONIGHT! they've been testing the lte towers around here recently as I noticed at first my 3G turn to a 4G and now, finally an LTE. wow just wow.
Unlimited LTE.
first things first I have a TON of torrents to dl to start actually utilizing my unlimited data plan here. The only thing that will slow me down is the lack of sd here. Unlimited upload speeds? WHY NOT!
Figures this didn't happen until I'm getting ready to retire this beautiful damned phone of ours as my everyday. Maybe it's fitting. A final swan song of fast, unimpeded internet.
Damnit I feel so happy right now!
