I remember back on Gingerbread Oxygen on my Desire, GMaps was really fast, smooth scrolling etc.
Now on GNexus, GMaps is really slow. The scrolling sometimes stacks and if I enable the compass, the direction update is very slow.
I have AOKP M3. But I have tried other ROMS too.
As far as I have seen, the only "real" feature that I have now, is two finger rotation which is cool.
Is it possible to install the 5.x series of GMaps on GNexus?
What do you think?
P.S. I am more interested to discuss it than make an other damn-you-google type of comment.
Honestly, this must be an issue with your phone/service. I can zoom all the way out of my current location, hop to another state and zoom in relatively quickly; with little to no stuttering at all. This is with Traffic enabled; though I don't use most of the other layers.
I agree with Dameon on this one. Maps are anything but slow on my Gnex. I'm running AOKP M3 with the Trinity kernel. Could it be some setting within Maps that is causing your issue? Could it be some other "location" based service running at the same time?
Good luck.
BTW, not totally on-target, but maybe you should look at some of the other mapping software out there. The wife and I are about playing around with the Waze Naviation app right now. It has dynamic traffic features that are based on info provided by other Waze users. I was concerned there would not be enough other users in the Baton Rouge area to make it useful, but that has not been the case so far. YMMV!!
I use it for navigation as well. Can't say that I've noticed a problem
Not a problem with mine either, I would recommend clearing maps data/cache see if that helps.
I don't believe I have a problem with my phone, since everything else seems pretty fast.
Maybe there is a network problem. (But it is slow on wifi too)
I guess I will try other maps...
I wish one of my friends would have a GNexus to compare it.
I will try to upload a video to show you what I mean.

I haven't seen too much about this and just upgraded so I thought I'd post some of my thoughts on it:
ROM Version 3.10.671.1
ROM Date 9/22/08
Radio Version 3.42.30
Found it at software.alltel.com (which redirected to HTC's site)
Speed seems a little faster than my stock ROM.
Battery life is noticeably better. Before it was terrible, now it lasts a full day.
It includes threaded text messages. So far I love this...always envied it on my wife's BlackBerry.
Enables built in GPS. I activated the 30 day trial and it seems to work well. I don't like the actual software as much as iGO 8 that I've been using with an external bluetooth GPS, but its still decent.
****I'd love to know if I can use the internal GPS with iGO? I poked around a bit but couldn't see any way to do it with this vanilla ROM. If someone knows something I'm all ears.
The CUBE didn't change at all (still sucks)
The weather program still doesn't cover my city which is terribly irritating (useless)
Comes with Opera 8.65 bundled. It loads slow initially but seems decent other than that.
SO...if I could get the internal GPS working with iGO 8, and get my Weather database fixed, I'd be pretty happy.
I'm not opposed to trying one of the ROMS on here, but am usually overwhelmed by all the choices. If anyone has a suggestion based on my comments above, I'd love to hear it.

Im new here as of tonight but let me throw in my two cents about iGo. Never used it but have seen lots of posts of users that do. I like Tom Tom 7. You shoudl, however be able to use iGo with the internal GPS. Its not a windows setting per se, but a setting in the GPS program. Somehow you told it to use the external GPS so you should be able to have it look for GPS internally. WM6.1 has a built in virtual device. Point your application at this, usually com 4 or select "Windows Managed"
Let me know how it works out as I am noew to the vouge, coming from the TITAN. Couldnt handle the lack of memory. Finally drove me insane so I called VZW and they are sending me out a 6900, should be here tomorrow. Scouting out kitchens, GPS fixes, etc.

Bumping old news. But Cons rom is flat out the BEST alltel rom out there.
I agree get Con's ROM you will not regret it.... Go with the Manilla.....
The very first thing that I noticed after upgrading to 2.2 was that the browser was noticeably more sluggish when panning and was visibly lagging behind my finger on the screen. It's only obvious on sites with complex content (e.g. www.planetf1.com ) and happens even with Flash switched off
I'm pretty sure this didn't happen with 2.1 as it was immediately apparent once I'd upgraded, but without having them side by side, it's hard to tell.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
Nope. planetf1.com loads just fine on mine. (with flash enabled)
Yes... I've noticed the same behaviuor!!! Now, with official 2.2 rom, scrolling sites is lagging respect to the fingers movement!
Came here to see if there were any threads on this. I notice the exact same thing in nearly all of the full fat websites (not the mobile versions) I go on. It's really irritating as the browser is the main thing I use on the phone besides texts, and it's nowhere near as snappy as before. Sort of wish I'd held off updating.

mine is perfectly fine but i did a full data and phone reset
Inertia lacking
For me, it's not the speed as such, but the speed of the scrolling - it's still smooth and not jerky, but there seems to be a lack of "inertia".
The same can be said for Google Maps - flicking or scrolling quickly doesn't produce quite as much speed and the scrolling simply slows down much faster than before with much less inertia/elasticity (if that makes sense!)
Not a major problem, and as I said, it's still smooth and not jerky for me which would have been a much bigger problem if the frame-rate had reduced...
I have noticed scrolling isn't quite as smooth as 2.1, I have flash on demand but noticed animated images now animate. I wonder if that slows the scrolling down.
Same here on regular sites (not mobile ones). What's diference between flash always on and on demand?
Same here.. Experiencing more laggy scrolling in browser
Thanks all. Good to know I'm not alone...
Again, this is my primary app on the device so for me at least, this is a bit of a downgrade
Perhaps a cache purge might help....
In di.se I canĀ“t scroll down at first, I have to zoom in to be able to scroll down. There wasnt any problems before upgrade
I cleared my cache and turned my phone off and on and that seems to have cleared up my sluggish browser.

its a real pity there are some annoying little issues.
The browser home page does not work. Evenif you kill the browser it will still load on the last page you visited. not google etc or whatever you want as your homepage. I wanted 2.2 fast too, but some basic QA could have caught these issues.
yup it is lagging and slow in comparison to 2.1
I can cope with most issues but this is to bad. Going to roll back until this is fixed

This lag is really bad and noticeable, I'm.surprised not as many people are making a big thing of it, it is to me lol .
I've done a full wipe and the browser lag is still there
Anyone know what else to try
Yep I am experiencing the same.
Gotta be something to do with Flash right?
Mines not super smooth either but for how often I use it where I need it, it doesn't bother me at all.
I've also noticed scrolling is a bit jerky, not just in browser but in any list, for example flicking through apps in the app drawer. It's annoyed me for a while, I've put it down to quirks of unofficial roms. Seems to be worse in some roms more than others, and also worse when I have more apps installed but I may be imagining that.
Browser is slower than 2.1, it's annoying.
I am thinking about flashing CM6 this weekend just to see what it's like. I have been on Vaelpak 2.2 and been very happy with it. I tried some of the sense roms first (Baked and Myn mainly) and didn't think I would like a non-sense rom but I am digging Vael w/Launcher Pro and haven't really missed sense.
I know that the ultimate test will be to try it out myself and I plan to. I am also not trying to start another blanket "which one is best thread" but I would like to hear some thoughts from some of you Rom Warriors that have spent some decent time with both to see what I should expect as far as these two are concerned.
Other factors: I am not in a 4G area, HDMI isn't important (right now anyways) and I never listed to the FM radio anyways. I also have one of the Chinese batteries on the way, so as long as the weight of it don't scare me off, I hopefully won't have battery issues with either rom.
With those factors in the mix, can some of you offer your informed opinions of what I should expect to see/miss if I flash CM6?
I think both have new versions cooking (see what I did thar) so just give me your thoughts on the current versions.
Thanks a bunch!
I am doing that right now but I am coming from Fresh. So far don't like it. No Market- so far, I found a "fix" but it doesn't work, so I have a phone with web and that is about it!! Need to search some more but tied up with kids etc...

Did you install gapps, per chance?
AOSP is something you either like or dislike ... there is no middle ground. I have used CM6 extensively, but I also maintain a nice "Sense" rom, for whenever I'm in a 4g area. On that point, I may not need it much longer, as CM6 will be going 4g very shortly. Also looks like HDMI will be working soon ... FM Radio has already been added.
Basic aosp, like in Cyanogen's rom is very quick, very smooth, and just works. You will hear about people who are having an issue here and there, but it's almost always "user error". That doesn't mean that CM6 is perfect, but it is highly evolved and almost there.
Most of the people coming from "sense" will not like it. Although it doesn't have all the widgets and stuff ... almost everything can be replicated. For example, I like the look of the clock/weather widget and so I use "fancy widget", an almost exact replica. I also like launcher pro, and it works perfectly. I could go on and on, but you will need to decide for yourself.
Do a nand back up of whatever you're currently using, and jump in. And don't give up after a couple of hours. As with everything new, there is a learning curve ... and you should do some reading/exploring. Ask lots of questions ... there is plenty of help available ... all be it, with the usual XDA "style". I will leave you with this final thought ... Cyanogen is without a doubt, the foremost Android developer ever.
CM6 will be smoother, less lockups and just overall run better. I haven't run Vael's so I don't know if he uses AOSP contacts and dialer, but I prefer the AOSP contacts and text apps. I download Dialer One from the market to get T9 dialing.
Integration with facebook contacts and twitter is much better on CM6. CM6 may have 4G working soon, FM Radio is working now, and HDMI is close as well. The camera app on CM6 is leagues better than any of the other camera apps.
Just make sure when you install cm6 that you install the Gapps zip since you need that to get maps, market, gmail and the basic google services.
I have a lot of time with both roms. Vaelpak's rom is fantastic and his support is quick and spot on. probably the developer that is the most reachable when you have a problem or question. Very smooth, stable, and fast. CM6 takes a lot of fine tuning to get all the apps you want and get it set up to exactly the way you want it. Its so damn fast and smooth that people in 4g areas run the rom anyway because it's performance out weighs the lack of 4g and hdmi. And snap's kernels and his support team are second to none. When 4g makes it to CM I will run that rom as my daily exclusively on my EVO until the new dual core phones come out or the EVO 2.

Im not green as far as flashing goes, but Im curioius if anyone has seen any of the stellar Developers here implementing a IP masking browser. I use one on my home laptop, and as of yet have not seen one for Android, or a plugin.
-is it possible?
-is there already one out there?

Not sure about a browser but I do know there are TOR apps out there. You have to use two in combination in order for it to work right and it really slows down your data speeds.
I just recently got Tor (Orbot) working on my E4GT running Blazer ROM. Transparent proxying an Torifying everything works great for me. Although it does sacrifice a decent bit of anonymity, if you want faster speeds you can tell Orbot to only use entrance & exit nodes from within the United States ("{us}") and enable "Strict Nodes".
I had issues running Orbot on my phone initially, but found a workaround, which I posted @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1489042
I'm new to using a rooted device and installing custom ROMS, and I love it!
I've loaded the latest Blackout ICS version 3.0.0, and am really impressed by how well it works. I immediately noticed that battery life is better than anything I've used previously, always different versions of Gingerbread. So that's a big improvement straight away. As others have highlighted, it's a bit laggy at times, but I overclocked the CPU and it runs much more smoothly. Even just 1.2 GHZ produced a noticeable improvement, and I'm now on just under 1.5 GHz, which I gather is a safe setting. I was worried about this affecting battery life, but if it has it's barely noticeable. I suppose it only runs at the fastest speed when it needs to.
The only problem with the ROM is the auto-brightness, which jumps up and down even in fixed light conditions. Not sure if the developers pick these threads up, but that is really the only issue I've found.
As the DHD seems to be the only device not to be getting an official port of ICS, I'd definitely recommend giving this ROM a try.
With all these other devices getting updates, is it likely that more fully working ICS ports for the DHD will be on the horizon?

You should also try AOSPX and Nik Project X. The first one is stock ICS and the second one is ICS with Sense 4.0. I tried both of em and they work flawlessly on my DHD.
Haven't tried Blackout yet because I saw in the thread that there were still quite a few issues to be solved.

I like the look of Nik Project X, though the final post on the forum raises an issue with not being able to get HSDPA data speed. I'll keep tabs on that forum and maybe give it a try.

Hmm, haven't really paid attention to that (I 'm mostly on WIFI). I 'll do a speedtest when I get the chance.
Edit: Did a quick test and I 'm getting 3,6Mb down / 1,6Mb up (inside a server room right now so not the best connection). Seems quite normal for my network (7,2Mb is max speed I can get from my provider). Of course the max HSDPA speed is alot higher but that 's something I cannot test.
Hi,
I've just installed, and recovered my apps, as i've wiped battery calibration i cannot talk about it, but OC is excellent. Even in default frequency the desktop turns without any lags, but as you mentionned, sometime there are some lags (typing on keyboard for instance) but i guess it's linked to the OC profile changing , try in performance instead of on demand, this should solve that.
Regarding the brightness i agree , it seems it change on "i don't know which parameter" from bright to low brightness.. so i've installed Bright day app to set the brightness along the day at low value and i've set on the main desktop the brightness widget to up from system parameters to push it up when i need, then bright day will recover the setting after a while..

So after few days of testing here are my feelings :
Takeing account of deamon set to 1,2Ghz, i can still reach 1d and half near 2days without charging , with a light use :
Allways connected to network though HSDPA (as i take train it often check the network to change the connected cell)
Playing 20-30min 3times a days to Pirates of carabean (3D game multiplayer so connecting to the network)
Surfing a bit
no music
no video
With an harder use i reached 1d wake up to sleep:
still same network condition
playing double time at least (1 to 1,5h 3times a days)
Surfing more (1h)
no music an no video
using battery eater apps (windguru) a bit
to resume my feeling on battery is excelent, i've noticed a light improvement on idle battery drop, a bit accelerated over time (due certainly to used app remaining processes.
Let's go now to the issue i've noticed :
-Back tactil button doesn't work on phone screen while it works everywhere else
-Using smoth rosie to supersmooth show a light display trouble when reducing the app drawer windows (doubling the reducing animation)
-Light keyboard trouble doubling the A letter some time (like if the touchscreen has been typed twice when its not the case)
-blackout tweak shortcut from top task bar doesn't linked (need to go through the app drawer to access it)
-Folder creation missing from widget/app shortcut addition screen (or i didn't found it) , i use the moving app on another icon to create it (i don't know if it's the ICS new way of creating folder on desktop)
The plus i've found (don't know if it's an ICS feature) : create a folder in the lower task bar : can jump from 4 shortcut to full app contained in your phone accessible from the locked screen : I loved that !
The overall impression is really great and for an old phone that "doesn't give a good experience of ICS" following HTC, i feel this ROM fullfill my expectation from ICS on my Desire HD !
Many thanks to the Blackout team !

Btw, testing further again, i've found the sms issue (from my point of view it was linked to transferring sms not to content,) I'll give a try to the 3.1 to chek this out
I confirm the keyboard double "a" in certain text box, particularly in sms typing or web address typing
Lags linked to overclocking

Yes. Some can't send at all. Some have data drop in and out while sending and some have no issues. Seems weird to me since the hardware is supposed to be the same for the most part. I think apn and radio combo has the most to do with it.

Love this ROM...
This ROM would be my daily driver if the Wifi hot-spot worked. Has anyone found a work-around or fix? Wifi Tether didn't work either btw. I know it's WIP by the devs but they said it wasn't a major priority for them (Boooooo lol) Fingers crossed for v3.2
As noticed recently in the official thread, i've also noticed the magical battery jumps, i first guessed it was linked to the battery calibration wipe i've done before to flash the Blackout3.0 rom, but i can sometime still see this trouble also.
It happen even phone is in use but every time inbetween 30 and 5 percent of battery left. it goes down to low then readjust it to an higher value without any reason.
The phenomen come back lately less often, but maybe devs can check this out. I'm running on a SFR Desire HD recognized as an incredible S on the 3.0 rom.
