[Q] A2SD Questions - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right ive just installed android ics beta really nice rom and is working pretty good
I have a few questions since installing this rom as its the first time im using A2SD script, the questions i have is can i use darktremor's A2SD on any rom e.g. Cyanogenmod7.1?
and from moving the dalvik cashe to the SD card when say i want to flash a new rom do i have to move it back to main phone? (little confused there)
Thanks !

I'm also quiet a newbie in such things, but since
no one has answered till now, I try to give it my
best shot.
I'm not sure on your first question, since I always flashed
ROMs with already built-in a2sd support, or at least should
have had built-in support, which I could repair by flashing
the a2sd script (just did with miui-xj - man, was I scared to
break everyting!).]
But I THINK, that every ROM, which supports init.d and is
not the stock ROM () can be used with the a2sd script.
And on your second question..
As far as I understand, the dalvic-cache is moved on your sd-ext
partition, right? And since it seems to be always advised to
wipe all data, the sd-ext is also wiped and so is the
dalvic-cache.
I'm sure somebody will correct me soon, if I'm wrong!

You don't have to move dalvik cache back to the SD card, but you DO have to FULL wipe your /system,/data,/dalvik and SD-EXT or you'll get bootloop errors. When you then wipe dalvik cache it should rebuild on data.

cheers so i need to ensure i whipe the Ext partition also?

When you are using the ClockWorkMod Recovery, the
sd-ext partition is formated when you apply
wipe data / factory reset.
I can only recommend the
Noob Proof Everything Desire Guide in the development subforum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
At step seven it is described how one should proceed.

Moving dalvik-cache to sd-ext will possibly lower the volume in Sandvold's ICS rom.

sd card
Sounds like its most likely your SD card. Backup everything off it onto computer, then format it, get rid of all partitions for eg. App2sd just to be safe, then put update file on SD card again, full phone wipe, dalvik cache wipe, and you should be ok. Mess about with app2sd once your bit more experienced.

Are you new to flashing custom roms? the first boot can take a while fyi
do a full wipe and wipe the dalvik cache before you flash the 3.3 rom
it must be that you didnt flash it properly, the 3.3 rom boots without problems on the hero
wipe/factory reset
wipe dalvik
wipe/factory rest
off
boot recovery
flash
reboot
setup
reboot
done!

Nope... I'm not new to flashing ROM. Almost flash to the level where I need to in an Anonymous Flash-oholics group.
I did do a full wipe and wipe the dalvik cache before I flashed the 3.3 rom.
I also re-flashed, tryed wipeing before and after, wiped the dalvik cache before and after...
The reason I do not have a ext part on my SD is, that I do not install so many applications, that I run out of space. And the speed of the internal mem is alot faster.
For keeping my apps between flashs, I find titanium back to be the best solution.
Is a ext part need to run the 3.3? I ran almost all the other villain rom version, without a ext part.

Hey,
I also have problems installing 3.3 ROM. I have a running 3.2 VillainROM but 3.3 will just not install! I did factory/ rest wipe + Davlik wipe but stuck @ bootscreen again! I do have a ext3 (or 2) partition which I did not flash, but the installing of 3.2 worked fine so I guess its a problem with 3.3...

[Q] Complete Wipe

Hi guys and gals.
Right, i have tried a few Roms, and been having minor issues on them, i want to do a complete wipe, and load the Rom freshly, before I report any problems to the dev.
I am currently on AuraxTSense, I have unRevoked, and before i installed this Rom, i did a factory reset, wipe dalvik, and personal data. Anything else i can do ?
Is this the best wiping I can do, or is there any more ?
Thanks
Well as the rom(AuraxtSense) is using a2sd+ do you have an ext-partition? In that case, in order to try a full wipe, you should do the following in the mentioned order when in recovery:
- make nandroid backup(in case anything goes wrong)
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik cache
- wipe data
- wipe sd-ext
- flash rom zip file
- flash correct radio(if you haven't already done this)
BTW. i'm running AuraxtSense 7.6.1 without any problems at all
Ok I do have SD partitioned, and it was still giving me random reboots, i am back on leedroids latest now, and i will see how that goes, if its still doing the same i will try upit suggestions.
anohter question, if i format the sd card, is it still a ' goldcard ' or do i have to do the process over again?
I believe a goldcard doesnt loose its feature even on formatting ?
"once a goldcard, always a goldcard " ?
BTW whats wiping "cache partition" ?
before flashing each new rom with ap2sd+ do we have to format the sd card and partition it all over again ?
thanks

[Q] Cyanogenmod v.7 and dalvik cache

Recently I've managed to root using Unrevoked and flash a new ROM to my HTC Desire, I currently have Cyanogenmod v.7 RC2 running and it's fantastic!
However I'm already running low of internal memory.
I've done some reading about how to boost this by setting up a partition on my memory card, however there are some things that don't quite add up in my head. Below is a list of what I think I need to do to obtain A2SD+ for Cyanogenmod v.7 RC2, correct me if I'm wrong anywhere please
Make a backup using ROM manager
Copy all important data from memory card as I will have to format it - This includes the backup.
Use ROM manager to format the SD card and create a ext3 partition
Download S2E (Simple2ext) from the android marketplace and tick the box to move the dalvik cache to the SD card.
If the process list above is correct then my questions are:
Do I need to have obtained S-OFF to complete this process?
Do you need to start from a clean slate when moving the dalvik cache, i.e. should I factory-reset/wipe dalvik cache/wipe cache and then install Cyanogenmod v.7 RC2 again?
When you move over the dalvik cache is this a permanent move? For example if I had problem booting and I went through the factory-reset/wipe dalvik cache/wipe cache and then install Cyanogenmod v.7 RC2 again would this reset the dalvik cache back to its original location on the internal memory? Or would something more complicated need to be done to achieve this?
Thank you in advance for any help,
I'm slowly learning the basics
-Jackson
Bump,
any help would be greatly appreciated.
For any tl;dr
I really just want to know if moving the Dalvik cache to the SD card is permanent? Or will a full re-flash restore the dalviks original path back to the internal memory?
1) No.
2) No, don't do anything.
3) The dalvik cache does get moved but not too sure if it's permanent.
I would say to move dalvik cache back to internal, you would have to wipe /system because it's a script that gets installed as you need to remove the script. It's not permanent the way your thinking of. Just if you move it using the script then I don't think you can move it back whilst the script is installed. When the script is removed it will reset and go back to internal. Does that even make any sense?

[Q] Low on memory..

Basically we all know that the Desire has a useless ammount of memory. I'm running ICS one of the first beta versions, anyway I've got no memory, I've tried to partition the sd card to ext 4 but it rejects it so I'm looking for someone to point me to the next step with some instructions mainly if I need to revert back to gingerbread, how would I do that?
Thanks Dave
[EDIT] Should also mention I found this thread but doesn't really help me.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429570&page=2
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
How are you trying to partion SD card? Most reliable methods seem to be with 4ext or Gpart.
I've used gparted via ubuntu, but it for some reason doesn't like that, I'm thinking its rom related as it worked on a GB rom but since going over to ICS it doesn't work..
what do you mean 'rejects it'
do you mean that your entire SD card is not being read by the ROM and/or windows ?
You can use one of clockwork recovery's advanced menus to format the drive for you to a size of your choice 512 or 1024 or whatever.. I can't remember if it gave options for ext3 and 4 but you can def. get ext 4 out of it. the rest should be left as fat32.. works like a charm

The way I did it was via the CWM.
Before you do this, make sure that there are no apps stored on the sdcard (because your about to wipe it) - i.e. go through each app (unless you have Titanium Backup, which makes this easier).
Boot into recovery, in the advanced section, select partition sdcard, then select a 512Mb partition (wouldn't go higher - you get issues), select 0 for the swap partition.
Then boot up and follow the instructions about a2sd on this page:-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355660
It all worked fine for me (and I have loads of space now!)
What version of CWM did you use?
hmmmm, are you using beta 0.3.6?
I mean, there are some instructions for a2sd:
To activate the built in a2sd:
open terminal and run these commands:
su
a2sd install
To move dalvik cache do:
a2sd cachesd
And try with different sd card....
I'm on 0.3.6 i followed the methods of using the CWM to partition it, when i said rejects it i meant that after using gparted android claims it is corrupted and nees to be format. Anyway so after running the terminal commands all fine but i cannot use the phone at all, contacts process crashes and thats followed by "android.process.accore has stopped." Any suggestions? I figured it might be a bad flash so re-flashed it but that doesnt seem to help.
I have not yet partitioned my sd card, I am still sorting things out. I also have low mem error. I believe the bulk of the problem, is the sorting of things. Others have had success with certain configurations of CWM, Droid builds, ext3 or ext4, and cell phone carriers.
After reading like you have, I have seen that CWM partitions have been unsuccessful until after version 2. I am currently running a US Cellular Droid 2.2, Rooted, CWM v4.0.0.2. Sorry for the lack of help yet. I will keep updating as I work through this.
I think best bet for me is to go back to gingerbread and go back to ICS after that and see where I am.
ICS for Desire is too many bug.
Try to erase cash and restart phone
These are the steps you have to do:
1. S-off
2. Get the appropriate partition for the system (see the Alpharev instrutions);you need Bravo Stock or Bravo Data++(I used the last one);
3. with Geparted from Linux(Ubuntu) live cd, partition SD card FAT32 and at least 1,5Gb 4Ext, both as primary partition;
4. power-off your Desire;
5. press Vol. down and Power;
6. go in Recovery;
7. wipe data/factory reset
8. wipe cache partition
9. mounts and storage --> format boot, cache, data, system, sd-ext
10. advanced --> wipe dalvik cache, wipe battery stats
11. install clean rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1403113 without trying to get m2sd to work;
12. Setup the Google stuff;
Goodluck!
If you want to have ICS on your Desire, try Chromium v1.5 .

[Q] Sudden boots! Wiping phone and formatting new SD-Card - in which sequence? (4ext)

Hi there,
I recently put mildwild CM7 on my HTC Desire (had a thread for this).
It didn't help getting rid of big boot problems (sudden reboots, bootloops....mostly after a reboot/bootloop, the device is stuck at HTC Logo).
I assume hardware malfunction, but would like to try a full wipe and another SD-Card.
Therefor I need help. Using 4ext, I read in this thread that I need to:
wipe data / factory reset
wipe cache partition
advanced > wipe dalvik cache
advanced > wipe battery stats
Also, I want to use a new SD-Card (8GB). I have no clue how to do that and of course not, in what sequence.
At last, I have a more theoretical/abstract question on a different toppic:
when I succesfully installed the mildwild CM7 Custom ROM, can I delete the two zip-Folder (part1 and part 2) of the ROM on my SD-Card or do I have to keep them there?
No doubt, I'm a noob
thx in advance!
Yea, you can delete the rom zip after you installed it.
sounds like maybe a problem with ext partition rather than hardware......Use GParted on pc to create your fat32 and ext partition on new card, then stick the rom on ur new card, new card into desire, full wipe desire, install rom, delete zip files of rom if you wish
