sd card
Sounds like its most likely your SD card. Backup everything off it onto computer, then format it, get rid of all partitions for eg. App2sd just to be safe, then put update file on SD card again, full phone wipe, dalvik cache wipe, and you should be ok. Mess about with app2sd once your bit more experienced.

Are you new to flashing custom roms? the first boot can take a while fyi
do a full wipe and wipe the dalvik cache before you flash the 3.3 rom
it must be that you didnt flash it properly, the 3.3 rom boots without problems on the hero

wipe/factory reset
wipe dalvik
wipe/factory rest
off
boot recovery
flash
reboot
setup
reboot
done!

Nope... I'm not new to flashing ROM. Almost flash to the level where I need to in an Anonymous Flash-oholics group.
I did do a full wipe and wipe the dalvik cache before I flashed the 3.3 rom.
I also re-flashed, tryed wipeing before and after, wiped the dalvik cache before and after...
The reason I do not have a ext part on my SD is, that I do not install so many applications, that I run out of space. And the speed of the internal mem is alot faster.
For keeping my apps between flashs, I find titanium back to be the best solution.
Is a ext part need to run the 3.3? I ran almost all the other villain rom version, without a ext part.

Hey,
I also have problems installing 3.3 ROM. I have a running 3.2 VillainROM but 3.3 will just not install! I did factory/ rest wipe + Davlik wipe but stuck @ bootscreen again! I do have a ext3 (or 2) partition which I did not flash, but the installing of 3.2 worked fine so I guess its a problem with 3.3...

Help, phone in constant boot loop

I've followed this guide on this forum to get a2sd:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=670087
And I have the Modaco mod, and I know it said there was a chance it could go wrong.
But I tried nandroid restore and it didn't work, now I'm still in a boot loop, what should I do
Trying to do this now:
Run a2sd remove to reset everything back...that will fix the bootloop by setting everything back to internal storage.
Hope it works
Didn't work.
Have u partitioned ur sd card with an ext2 partition? im using apps2sd, if i take my sd card out and turn my fone on, it gets stuck in a boot loop, partion ur sd card using recovery, if that dosent work just flash onther rom from recovery lol

I used rommanager to partition my sd card.
And the a2sd remove command didn't work, still in loop
Also, did you flash a MCR custom rom that already includes Apps2SD? if you did, then all you needed to do was partition your SD card while still in Recovery Mode. You only need to install Apps2SD separately if the rom you want to flash does not have Apps2SD incorporated into the rom.
If you have a rom with Apps2SD already installed, then in Recovery Mode, perform a full wipe, flash the rom, partition your SD card, and then convert ext2 to ext3. All steps should be perfomed while still in Recovery Mode and before you reboot your device.

The rom doesn't contain apps2sd.
And with a full whipe, do you mean a factory reset?

Yep, try going back into Recovery Mode menu and select Wipe > Wipe Data/Factory Reset using the optical trackpad. If you still get stuck, then I would suggest that you follow this guide:
http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/
It is very easy to follow and explains how to install Apps2SD separately. Try flashing the rom file (rootedupdate.zip) it mentions because you would otherwise be stuck in bootloop if you re-flashed your MCR rom having no way to load the Sense UI again and place the r1-a2sd-desire-dalvik-fresh-signed.zip onto your SD Card (unless you maybe downloaded it using ROM Manager or had another smartphone available where you could take out your sd card, insert it into the other phone, mount it, and place the downloaded r1-a2sd-desire-dalvik-fresh-signed.zip onto your sd card, then re-insert it back into your phone to flash)
Just remember to perform a full wipe in Recovery Mode menu (Wipe > Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe > Wipe cache, Wipe > Wipe Dalvik-cache). Then re-flash the rom and follow the guide to install Apps2SD.
Sorry to answer this late, I was away for the weekend.
It's a nice guide, but I don't have those files on my sd card, and I don't have an sd card adaptor.
I don't want to send my phone in
Try wiping everything (data, ext and dalvik-cache) and either try your nandroid backup again or reflash the rom.

I always tried the factory wipe and cache clear from my custom recovery but that didn't work.
Then I did a factory wipe and cache clear from my standard recovery and he started up again
I think everybody was telling me to do this, but I always did it in custom recovery.
Thanks a lot for the help tkirton and MasDroid!!

[Q] Complete Wipe

Hi guys and gals.
Right, i have tried a few Roms, and been having minor issues on them, i want to do a complete wipe, and load the Rom freshly, before I report any problems to the dev.
I am currently on AuraxTSense, I have unRevoked, and before i installed this Rom, i did a factory reset, wipe dalvik, and personal data. Anything else i can do ?
Is this the best wiping I can do, or is there any more ?
Thanks
Well as the rom(AuraxtSense) is using a2sd+ do you have an ext-partition? In that case, in order to try a full wipe, you should do the following in the mentioned order when in recovery:
- make nandroid backup(in case anything goes wrong)
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik cache
- wipe data
- wipe sd-ext
- flash rom zip file
- flash correct radio(if you haven't already done this)
BTW. i'm running AuraxtSense 7.6.1 without any problems at all
Ok I do have SD partitioned, and it was still giving me random reboots, i am back on leedroids latest now, and i will see how that goes, if its still doing the same i will try upit suggestions.
anohter question, if i format the sd card, is it still a ' goldcard ' or do i have to do the process over again?
I believe a goldcard doesnt loose its feature even on formatting ?
"once a goldcard, always a goldcard " ?
BTW whats wiping "cache partition" ?
before flashing each new rom with ap2sd+ do we have to format the sd card and partition it all over again ?
thanks

Bootloader Issues?

Been having a few problems with random rebooting on my EVO. I had been using Sprint Lovers Rom since Jan. Haven't had any issues. I recently decided to try Calkulin's EViO 3 v1.0 Beta 2. Which I'm really liking as well.
But my phone has been randomly rebooting. Most times it reboots and will not boot back to main screen without me having to pull the battery , reboot into recovery and reinstall the rom. When get the phone to boot back to the main menu, it reboots at least 3 or 4 more times. I usually have to reboot into recovery, then wipe cache, dalvik, and data again in order to stop the reboots for awhile.
So I wiped everything again and used a nandroid backup to go back to SprintLovers rom. Will I had the same rebooting issues with that too, which I never had before. So I'm beginning to think I have a issue with the bootloader. I had started another thread in the wrong forum and someone suggested wiping the SD-EXT Partition of my memory card since I'm using Apps2SD. Problem is I don't have SD-EXT partition. I tried mounting it and formatting it. I keep getting a error message saying 'path volume sd-ext invalid".
Any ideas to stop this random rebooting to stop?
Using Clockwork Recovery if that matters.
Download the PC36IMG.zip file for amon_RA from HERE and flash from the bootloader screen. Afterwards, go into the wipe menu and wipe cache & dalvik and then make a nandroid backup of your current setup. Afterwards, go back to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it EXCEPT the SD card and then flash the rom you want to use. By the way, the sd-ext is listed in the wipe menu.

Thanks for the reply. How is the sd-ext partition created? is it automatically created by App2SD?

Yes. I never use A2SD because I've never even been close to running out of space, and read/write speed is faster on internal memory.
Hope wiping solves your problem

Format system and other miscellaneous questions

I understand about wipe the dalvich cache, cache, and user data.* I see it is recommended that you format the system data and sd card and this is where I am confused.
I am on a custom rom and the next time I change roms I want to make sure I do it properly.* Before I flashed my latest JB rom I did a complete factory restore to 4.0.4 and then unlocked/rooted using one of the all in one programs. (wanted a clean install of all apps/data)* I then loaded rom manger downloaded my rom, went to recovery, wiped the cache, dalvich, and user data and while still in recovery I installed the downloaded rom no problem and everything is running fine.
My questions.
When they say back up your SD card is that what I see when I plug the phone into my computer? And this is the safe part of the system if all goes well during rom changing.
When told to format system and sd card here is what I see for my options:
Mount/sdcard
Mount/system
Unmount/cache
Unmount/data
Format/sdcard
Format/system
Format/cache
Format/data*
What do I actually need to do in this section and what order do I do it in?* Before or after the cache/dalvich/userdata?
And my main question is, if I use Rom Manger and download a rom, then reboot into recovery, then wipe the cache, dalvich, user data, and then do the format part above, will I lose the downloaded rom or is that part of the system untouched?
Unnecessary steps are unnecessary.
Rom install will format/wipe system for you and new dalvik cache will be generated automatically.
Going to a whole new rom, just do factory reset/wipe data from main screen in cwm. Then install rom.
Cache will be wiped with factory reset within cwm.
And yes when they say back up your sdcard, it means the files you see when you plug it into your computer.

Sounds like you did it fine.
General rule of thumb is that there is no need to nuke and start fresh unless you are having some major issues with your rom

T800 What to wipe when installing a new rom

When installing a new rom what are you suppose to wipe? I always thought you only wiped cache/dalvik /data. Is there something I'm missing because I read today that someone was wiping their internal sd card also.

It depends what rom you are replacing. If stock to cm, you should factory reset (that automatically wipes cache and dalvik for you). If just flashing a new cm rom over an existing cm rom, then just wiping dalvik is usually enough. You should never need to wipe your internal sd media.

never wipe internal SD unless you have a ROM file or TWRP backup on an external SD card. wiping internal SD will delete the ROM file (in the root folder) that you plan to install after the wipe.
Yeah, I always d/l to ext sdcard. learned my lesson about the hard way when I first started rooting and flazhing roms.
I never wipe anything except cache and dalvik. I always dirty flash. If it doesn't boot then I wipe data.
