[Q] Been reading for hours and have a question

Hi everyone
I've spent forever reading the forum and have a few questions and hopefully you'll have a quick answer for me.
Excuse my noobness (shouldn't be too bad, I've learned a lot in the last 5 hours!)
I've rooted my desire with unrevoked (it's worked fine)
This is a simlocked (soon to be unlocked first before flash?) handset from 3UK
Installed rom manager pro and backed up everything
All I want to do is install a stock/vanilla froyo 2.2 with sense etc. I don't care if it closes the root and I think I want it to automatically upgrade everything including the radio so I basically end up with a standard unbranded handset. No need for further rooting.
I'll be using rom manager to install the rom. I did notice in this thread:
(stock rom thread) Not allowed to post url's
The stock roms listed, although at the top there are two listed? 122704 & 126984 and they are exe files. Should they be zip files if installed via rom manager? A direct link to the correct rom would be excellent

Exe files can be used to update the Rom from your pc with USB cable. Please make sure to use the gold card when doing any updates to make sure it works properly after the update.
As for unlocking, you can unlock before or after changing the Rom. Just remember to keep the unlock code just in case. You may need to enter the unlock code twice in a row, this is normal.

Why would you want to install a RUU and lose root? There are plenty of good ROMs that are based on official HTC 2.2. Some are almost stock with very few modifications. Download, flash via recovery and you're done.

even if your rooted a branded device needs a goldcard to flash a generic ruu. just for your info, a vanilla rom dosent include sence, its called vanilla because its plain like the ice cream flavour, this means its a basic aosp rom with none of the htc apps

A gold card is a must if you had a branded phone (most likely if your phone was bought on a network and locked to a network too). Many users have had problems with WiFi if they update without a gold card

I really don't need to keep the phone rooted for future use. All I want is the latest software really, that's all. Thanks for the quick replies by the way guys. Of course if there is a slightly modified rom that I can install without a gold card I'll go for that, as long as it has sense (I like it)

you can install any custom rom without needing a goldcard! rather than using rom manager though, i suggest you use the unrevoked recovery flasher to flash the clockworkmod recovery, then its as simple as copying the rom.zip to your sd card and holding vol down and power

I just use the standard ROM on my Desire, never thought about routing as I am happy with the standard ROM with HTC Sense.
Here's a very basic run down of how I unbranded my desire. Please please please read through the guides on the developers forum and make sure you understand the process. It's simple but can damage your phone if you don't follow the instructions carefully.
1. Buy an unlock code (i use the phone on more than one network and it is a good idea to have an unlock code as some roms may lock your phone).
2. Create a gold card. There is a tool to do this which makes it easy to do, search the developers and q and a forums for this.
3. Download a RUU file to your pc. These are exe files that can run from your pc to update the phones ROM.

[Q] Root & Rom - Guide

I've red about everything, ever to hit the internet about rooting and rom-ing my Desire and I just think I might have red to much.
What I want to do:
* Root it.
* Cyanogenmod it.
My questions:
* I've red so many ways to root the phone, some ways were old, some new, but where can I find a simple and good guide for non-locked phone.
* I found about 6 versions of the Cyanogenmod, should I get the newest one or is there one more "stable"?
* I red that rooting the phone, voids warranty. If I root it and rom it, is there a way to get it completely back to stock "in case" if the screen, lets say.. dies? I've got 22 months left of the warranty and I'd love to not lose it.
* What rom would you personally recommend?
I'd love a piece of everyones mind!

I'm a total noob when it comes to this.
However, rooting is extremely easy with unrevoked 3.21 now. 1 click root.
if you decide to unroot it for warranty purpose, it's also easy too. I've done it 2 times just to switch the recoveries. You'll know what i'm talking about once you start rooting.
I have not tried Cyanogenmod, so no opinions on it.
I'm pretty conservative when it comes to tweaking the phone.
My personal preference is stock froyo 2.2.
& this's my route:
1. back up contacts
2. create a gold card.
then:
3. root using unrEVOked 3.21
4. Nanoid back up.
5. then install pre-rooted stock froyo 2.2 (2.10.405.2-initd-rooted-stock-v2.zip by teppic74)
6. partition SD card by ROM Manager downloaded from the Market
7. install Darktremor A2SD+
8. get used to staying up late messing around with the phone and/or cursing yourself for messing up the phone like me.
Root & Unroot.

You sure? Still a newbie myself but I thought a gold card was only required to apply official HTC stock updates to a branded phone. Custom ROMs etc all work by just rooting with unrevoked.

Gold card is for other HTC ROMs, custom ROMs should be fine so long as you can root

If you are using a branded phone it's a very good idea to make a goldcard before rooting in case you need to recover using an unbranded RUU.

Than you all for your post, but I've got one question since my main language isn't English, I don't quite get what branded phone is.
Anyone care to explain? =)

The reason I suggest to make a gold card in case you want to unroot for warranty purpose.
I don't think rooting will void warranty, but just in case...
Also, if your phone is SLCD & you happened to RUU a wrong ROM, you might need a gold card to load another ROM.
& correct me if i'm wrong, if you want to change from 1 recovery to another. I think you'd need to unroot.
Well, at least that's my case. I couldn't flash Amon RA recovery using unrEVOked 3.21 on my rooted phone running ClockworkMod recovery. Maybe it's me, or my SLCD phone. Yes, i like to blame all mistakes i make on the SLCD.
Before unrEVOked 3.21, you couldn't root OTA Froyo 2.2.
So you'd need a gold card to downgrade from OTA Froyo 2.2 to Eclair 2.1 using teppic74's guide. Then root.
Anyways, I'm a newbie, so I'm keeping a gold card under my pillow just in case heheheh.

A 'branded' phone is one where Orange, or T-Mobile (ie one of the phone network companies) have added their own extras to the software and where the phone is locked to that particular network.
An unbranded phone is not locked to a specific network and has the 'raw' HTC built software.

Ahh guess I'll just give up, going back to 2.1, gold carding, rooting, roming, backup, more and more problem, way to complex.
I build computers for living, very advanced Linux user and can fix about any problem there is for computers(you catch my drift..), yet I find this phone fairy tail way out of line.
Don't understand why there isn't just a simple Root for 2.2, basically its
1. Backup contacts (easy)
2. Create goldcard (here the problem starts..)
3. Download some program to root (fairly simple)
4. Download program to back up the phone (why isn't that build in the phone)
5. Download and install pre-rooted froyo (simple as long as I can find it)
6. Partition SD card by yet another program you'll need to download..
7. Install another program
8. Re experience the first week you got Linux..
I don't thing its worth the trouble since the phone is working fine right now..

And i still didnt get answer that unrevoked give only root or also custom recovery , i didnt need costom recovery i only need root .. cuz it can easily un root via ruu but i need root with stock recovery any idea ..

please help me achieve root ive tried everything!!

hi, ive been trying to achieve root with unrevoked for the past 3 days, but i cant do it.. ive been able to (according to unrevoked 3.21) achieve root.
but in Hboot it says that i am not nand unlocked.... (i do have root to an extent because superuser is installed and busybox does say i have root although i cant install it)
so i also tried using unrevoked forever, but that gives me an error saying: unsupported system...
any details u need i will give you, please help..

You won't necessaily have s-off, or nand unlocked, it depends on what phone you have for this to work using Unrevoked. There are other methods available if you wish to do this.
Have you actually tried installing an app that requires root access, like Setcpu or Titanium Backup, to see if it actually works?

I got an htc desire a month ago and got errors when I tried rooting with unrevoked. It turned out the hboot version was too recent (0.93) so I had to downgrade to 0.83 using this guide: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
It actually downgrades your phone to android 2.1 with Sense, but after that you can root your phone normally and then flash the Rom to any 2.2 Rom you want. It's a bit involved but the only way I could get root.
I wrote a quick guide for this before, which I'm reposting below. You can skip step 1 since it sounds like your phone is not branded.
Step 1:
Get an extra MicroSD card (2gig or whatever) and create a goldcard. You ONLY need this because if your phone is branded (eg. by a carrier... if any other names come up during boot, your phone is branded) and this is part of getting rid of that. If your phone is not branded, skip to step 2. Find out how here: android.modaco.com/content/general-discussion/305672/creating-a-goldcard/#entry1233023
Tip: you don't need an microSD card reader. You can format the microSD card in your phone by connecting your phone as a USB drive, and right-clicking the drive and formating. It MUST be FAT32 format, NOT FAT, so do it from the computer controls, not on the phone itself (because the phone itself does it in FAT format)
Step 2:
With your goldcard in your phone, you can now downgrade to Android 2.1. This kills two birds with one stone. A. It removes any branding from your phone and B. Lowers your hboot from higher versions to 0.83 which makes it possible to root your phone. Instructions here:

Tip: if it fails the first time (as mine did) and it can't find the zip file at the end, make sure your goldcard was FAT32.
Now your phone will be running HTC Sense 2.1 unbranded. The next two steps will allow you to put any of the Froyo versions (with Sense or without, your choice) on your phone.
Step 3:
Root your phone with UnrEVOked. Instructions here:

Tip: His instructions are great. His download pages are horrible, but they work eventually, just keep clicking.
Step 4:

I went with DeFroST, which is a nice Android ROM without Sense, since Android is better off on it's own, IMO.
Tip: If you don't have an MicroSD card reader, make sure you put the ROM's zip file on your MicroSD before you wipe your phone (Pt. 3, point 4 in the guide).

my phone is rooted, i just want s-off.. but i have read that unrevoked doesnt work for gsm phones, which is what i have..
so i tried alpharev, which seems to be working for most people, but when i tried it using virtualbox, it tells me that i have a cdma phone, and to go back when i know what im doing or something like that..
i 100% have a gsm phone... why do i get this??

ive tried it again using virtual box and it seems to be working this time, i havent done anything different... dont know y it didnt work last night, neither the phone or the computer have been rebooted..
if all goes well u wont hear from me..

Why not just boot your PC from the CD? It's SO much easier

[SOLVED] New HTC Desire (Android) user, need help

Before all jump on me being noob, yes I watched video and read rules. I hope I post this thread in place where it belongs.
I am not native English speaker so please don't throw me in fire if you see some writing errors.
I have always been Nokia user, from 1995 to this day, and now I got HTC Desire, it is old but I got it for free, it was in the box almost 1-2 years (never used) and that person discovered it before a month and gave it to me because he don't need it.
This thing is along first editions by the look of it, Android 2.1 Eclair, Amoled
I have updated it to latest official update (as I can remember 2.2.2)
I got spare MicroSD card (8GB class 10) and it working good with it (looks better then 4GB one I got with phone)
I also added some aps etc..memory was soon filled..I saw on Google that its common problem.
Now after some intro..lets go to my questions..
1. My goal is to root device and put best/stable rom with HTC Sense thing, mostly for additional memory on SD and as I did understand better control and speed of my phone - is that correct?
2. Is it possible to back-up EVERYTHING on my phone, store it to PC, and return it if I am not happy with new ROM, so I can continue to use it exactly where I left it with all my apps and file there?
3. I really don't know anything about android (some things I have read about rooting on google..) so I would need help, someone to point me at correct tutorials and rom to download. Maybe I am Android noob but I am good with PC so dont worry I will make some noob mistakes while rooting and adding new rom.

the most difficult question would be, which ROM to use. you said you'd like to keep Sense.
well here is an overview of every ROM you can get for your desire:

find out the differences between them, and then decide which one suits you best. but don't be afraid to try non-sense (haha, no pun intended ) ROMs.
now some explicit answers:
(1) yes, almost every ROM allows you to move internal storage to your SD and some even speed up your device. with some you could experience reboots now and then, but thats rather rare.
(2) yes, you can backup everything. there are two ways to do that:
a - NANDroid backup: it creates some kind of an image (like the .ISO is the image of a DVD), which can be restored, so that your phone looks the same as before.
i recommend it every time you change or update your ROM. NANDroid backups are available after you rooted and S-OFF'd your device.
b - there are many apps on the market to backup nearly every part of your user data. the most popular is Titanium Backup. it can make a copy highscores, user input like passwords, bookmarks of your browser, and so on.
contacts can usually be secured via your googlemail account.
all of those backups can and will be placed on you SD card, from where you can easily copy them to your desktop pc.
question 3 is already answered...keep an eye out for sticky threads (the ones pinned on top of every sub-forum) and you will find all the information needed.

The easiest way to learn about android is to test it out..play with it as much as you want and about rooting use revolutionary, it's the fastest and easiest method.Also, about restoring your Rom, you can do that by backing it up in recovery, nandroid backup as they call it.

the two guides linked in the posts 2 and 3 are quite outdated. neither even mention revolutionary.
revolutionary does not give you root. it performs s-off. root comes after flashing the superuser.zip.
@OP, i always recommend this set of guides, which explain a bit more in detail about what everything is first, so you can get an understanding of what you're doing before you do it (just as important!). the video guide is also useful to take you through the actual process.
take your time, i'm sure you'll eventually find what you want :good:

Now, I don't know how to keep apps already installed etc so thats where you guys step in with tutorials for my problem.
Few things to keep in mind:
I dont want S-OFF if not needed
I dont want to change my RADIO, ROM or whatever.
Just additional memory on SD card.

in that case you should take a look at this:

it's an application that allows you to move apps to your 2nd SD partition. no need to flash ROMs or anything else.
the only premise is that you need root.
i don't know if this app has any disadvantages...
but i recommend you to take a closer look at flashing ROMs anyways, because most people (including me) claim that their phone was kinda revived with a new custom ROM.
it's really worth a try. sure, there's a huge amount of reading involved, but in the end it's simpler than you think.

first you need root to install titanium backup then, you can take complete backups of your apps, cuz installing a custom ROM will surely destroy the apps.......just take your time, you'll get it........ I took 3 Weeks like you , reading, searching and reading some more..... Then i started doing, and all things fell in place., 1 year has passed and not looking back....

it does take a lot of time to understand it all, that's a good thing. many people with no experience with rooting have used the guides successfully
as above, links2sd should work. however, i was exactly the same, thinking i didn't want a custom rom, just thought i wanted more memory. but a custom rom is well worth the time when you find the right one for you. :good:
the guides will show you how to partition sd card properly (gparted or 4ext recovery)

s-off is not absolutely necessary, but is much more versatile, and more useful if things go wrong in the future. revolutionary will perform s-off anyway, and is ideal for your hboot version. don't be scared of it.
upgrading radio is not absolutely necessary

So after all readings and courage building, today I have decided to run operation X (lol)
Here is what I have done for now:
1. Done many things with PC drivers and comms PC-Mobile
2. S-OFF via Revolutionary
3. Denied CUSTOM RECOVERY from Revolutionary, read somewhere that 4EXT Recovery Touch is better. (I hope I didn't do something wrong with this decision)
4. Installed 4EXT Recovery Touch - custom recovery
5. From Recovery installed Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed
Now, it looks like I have now HTC Desire with S-OFF and root.
If I understand correctly now I can install titanium backup and also do nandroid backups.
After all backups I do, then I can proceed to new custom roms, extend memory to SD etc..still I am not sure do I want do more then extend mem.. Well, with time I will probably explore new roms just for fun or whatever.
But for today I have done enough (too much stuff in short time for newbee ))
BTW for now all has gone without problem or errors.

A completely nervous owner wants to root his HTC Desire...

Hi folks,
My 2.5 yr old Desire is either destined for the drawer or I hope to give it a lease of life by finally rooting it and getting a rom on it with jellybean. I assume that this will give me all the benefits PLUS get rid of the ongoing problems with a lack of internal memory that all Desires suffer from. Since I'm on a nice cheap sim-only deal plus I love the phone's size, etc, this seems the way to go.
So...I have very little idea as to what to do. I know I need to root first so another rom can be applied.
What I am after is the simplest, easiest, most direct way of rooting the phone.
I have:
Android version 2.2.2
Kernel version 2.6.32.15-g2633d94
Software no 2.33.161.6
I have had a good look on these forums as well as others and everytime someone asks a similar question there is too much assumed knowledge in the answer. Also, others always end up hijacking the thread with arguments over this way of doing it or that.
I need - please - a really simple explanation of what to do with the easiest method possible. Yes, I even need someone to tell me what gold card is and how I make one (if I need to that is).
Also - I am running a mac not a PC. I have access to Leopard and Snow Leopard OS's so please keep that in mind when referring to connecting the phone to a computer!!
Any more info you need then let me know.

I wouldn't flash a ICS or a JB rom if you are a first time flasher. You'll be giving yourself more problems to deal with than necessary for a beginner. Flash Gingerbread roms until you know your way around...

OK. Firstly, thanks for the help so far. I had already looked at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084 but it referred to Windows only. However, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189 is better for Macusers and I hadn't seen that link before. So it does seem easier than I first thought as he explains it very well. Still have questions though (and bear with me here)
From what I understand, the stages I need to go thru are:
1 - root the phone
2 - use alpharev to get the phone to S-off
3 - partition the SD card
4 - backup using alpharev's backup menu
5 - download and install a custom rom.
Firstly - how can I use alpharev with a Mac. It doesn't seem possible.
Secondly - at which stage can I get the phone to move apps2sd and how do I go about doing that? Or is that after I install a new rom? Will it move all the apps I want to the sd card?
Thirdly - in case things go wrong, what is the best way to backup the phone as it is before doing anything?
Thanks, and sorry if these have been addressed before but I am finding it hard to get clear answers that don't assume too much knowledge.

1. You need either Windows or Linux
2. After flashing ROM, most of em does it automatically (if you partitioned SD correctly, use 4ext recovery to do so)
3. I did never backup stock HTC ROM, i see no point in doing that since you can just restore to stock with RUU.

There's an app to backup sms messages in the play store that works with your gmail account. It let's you export.a backup file to your gmail account and you can also see the messages when logged into gmail. Then you can import from your gmail to restore them, it doesn't require root.
App is in the playstore. Contacts and stuff should be synced to your google account, you may want to export a file from the contacts app to the sd card and then copy or to the computer. You do that from the people or contacts app by pressing menu and settings or preferences usually. Exporting as a .vcf file I believe is what its called, then you can use any email program on computer even webmail to import them. If they aren't all on your gmail you need to have them there so when you wipe your phone and then sign into google it will restore them automatically.

1 - oh bugger! I'll drag my old XP partition out on the mac I guess!
2 - what is 4ext recovery? I also have heard of 3ext. EDIT: OK - just read the info in the link in your sig. Seems to do pretty well everything. Do I download this app before going thru the whole rooting thing?
3 - I downloaded a RUU file earlier (mac version) from a link on these boards which apparently matches my current phone. It's on my computer but I have no idea what to do with it.
Sorry but I really don't quite understand what others probably find very obvious, or I am at least unwilling to assume something that may leave me with a bricked phone. Better to ask.

That all makes sense. My contacts are all saved as google contacts anyway and all my emails are also on the computer.

You wipe all the data using recovery (required to flash new ROM's), obviously you also flash ROM's using it.. You can also partition SD, backup current ROM etc.

RUU restores your phone to factory default state.
Trust me it will be easier if instead asking you'll start doing it, and ask if you're stuck on something.

So do I use alpharev to backup or 4ext? Or can either of them do this? According to this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084) you use alpharev in step 6.

I agree totally - just want to clear the path as best as possible before I take the plunge.

Dude, this is 1 of your posts.. just do it.

was thinking same thing. if we knew the hboot then this could be solved in 5 mins. s-off and rooted

go here also check the all things root guide in my sig. basicaly download for windows/mac and fill in the drop down boxes to get ur beta key. plug in ur phone and run the tool u downloaded, paste in the beta key in command window and hit enter, it will also ask do u want to in lstall Clockworkmod recovery? yes. let it finish and u should be s-off then flash superuser zip file in recovery to gain root. Read that guide in my sig first

Yeah, you have good hboot for revolutionary so go for it.
After you're done with S-OFF, go into recovery and flash this package for root access: http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip
Then just reboot, install 4ext recovery, go into recovery wipe everything (full wipe/dalvik/system/boot), partition SD with 1GB EXT3 or 4, and flash ROM.

I'm think that's my project this evening. Hopefully I won't be on here asking stupid questions if I get all confused but it does seem pretty straightforward when you put it like that.
