Here is the deal.
Got a replacements EVO 4G from BestBuy.
It has a new label under the battery with no serial number.
Pulled the label up and nothing under it.
Revolutionary shows me a serial number but fails every beta key attempt.
Hboot 2.15
Updated radio.
Any ideas?
Very odd not to have a serial number.
Maybe trying to keep us from root.

You are copying and pasting the serial number and beta key correct?

Also some refurbs come without the sticker now its been like that for a couple of months if I recall

Urmmm Nope. LOL
Had a concussion since June, I tend to forget things with non stop headaches.
Let me try it again.
Been a while since I had to root.
Did not have this problem with my wife's new EVO.
Be right back and thank for the replies.

Had me puzzled.
Asked a few other people including devs. Had them puzzled too.

Root acquired!
Stuck on Waiting for Fastboot.
Problem fixed.
Revolutionary crashed but did give S-Off so I just flashed RA 3.11
Good to go.
Thanks

I'm back......
That wasn't easy.
It seriously did not want to root. LOL.
A side note.
Have never tried to restore a nandroid from one EVO to another but can it be done?
I am fully restored but just curious.
Know that RA saves backups by serial number and doesn't work that I am aware.
What about CWM recovery?

To me it's not worth the risk, but if you don't restore wimax then you shouldn't have any problems other than possibly having to restore a nandroid from the phone you have.
I would personally just restore user apps with TB and set everything up the way you want it. I'm the kind of person that prefers to start fresh though - everything just runs smoothly.

It will brick it

Total lie, this rumor of phones bricking has been put to rest in previous threads. I've many times restored replacement phones with backups (just don't use Wimax key part).

It won't brick but RA 3.11 would not even restore data or ext.
It just fails at attempt.
Maybe 2.3 would work.
Tried after posting just to see.

ahhh i would figure perhaps because they are different but I always install my same old recovery, restore back up. then, I update to a new recovery, boot into recovery and perform a new back up.

Been searching the forums for some time now and I still have yet to find a straight through answer. Anyone help me out or at least push me in the right direction?
Boot into recovery. Select Backup/Restore. Select Nand Backup.
This in Amon_RA recovery. If you do not have this recovery, look in the development forums for his thread. Instructions inside.

You can also do this through clockwork by using similar steps, or through the backup current rom option in rom manager.

Wouldn't this not make since to do after your rooted, I mean what's the point of backing everything up. Wouldn't you back up your phone b4 u attempt root so if things don't go to plan you'll have a nand backup. Why back things up after your rooted your already successful.......

Because from roms to themes to things like radios, the point of rooting is to customize your phone, meaning that there'll be a lot of things you're adding and removing that could plain **** your phone up.
All spelling errors thanks to xt9 on my Evo!
Understood, did the backup just in case.

The point of backing up is to save things you don't want to lose; it's the same premise as backing up your PC.

thanks, I am using Amon_ra rom currently.
Now do certain roms require you to do updates for wiimax/radio etc.... because I'm on stock rooted froyo .6 so will I retain those updates with most roms or will they all be reset and need updating? If so how would I distinguish between ones that ned updating and ones that don't

what is it, where can i find it, why can't I find it anywhere on market or google? is it better than clockwork backup/restore?
I assume you are trying to make a nandroid backup? This can be done thru clockwork recovery. It is making a backup of the NAND, or flash memory in which the system/data is stored on.
Haha

We were all new at some point guys...
To the OP:
1: Boot into Clockwork Recovery.
2: Go down to Backup And Restore
3: Press Backup.
4: Wait about 3minutes til it completes.
Thats what they call a Nandroid Backup. Its not an app or anything like that.
We make Nandroid backups incase we mess up our phones, we just restore it if were able to get into clockwork.
If you dont have Clockworkmod installed, go to the sticky in Android Development for the Epic and follow the guide.
PM me if you need any more help than that. I remember being a noob as well.

so to sum it up, if you're planning on jumping from rom to rom to theme to kernel,
having a nandroid backup is like using a condom.
which you should, cuz u never know.

Yup, if you go to backup and restore you can see it says "Nandroid" at the top of the screen. Hence Nandroid Backup.

Always, always make a full backup prior to making any "major" change (rom, kernel, theme). I archive my backups on my server to keep from cluttering up the sd card and only carry the last backup on the sd.
You can also restore just data or just cache if you do a full wipe (i.e., for a rom flash) and don't want to deal with titanium (advanced restore) - saved my ass on a couple bad downloads/beta roms.
Also, welcome to the wonderful (and addicting) world of modding

addiction is definitely the right word. probably tried at least 7 roms. finally settled on the quantum rom with dk17 modem. works great! wish it was a little faster though.

Hey guys!
I made the mistake of trying to run an animation I downloaded on my phone while running Go Launcher. It of course, didn't work. I went ahead, wiped the data and then went to restore and tried to restore my nandroid and it told me:
Oops! Something went wrong!
I reflashed CM7 and did it all over again. My question is, what could have "gone wrong?"
Why did this happen? I'm using Amon Ra. If anyone could help me, that would be AWESOME! Thanks in advance guys!
Md5 sum mismatch, or corrupt IMG, bad block write, many choices, there is recovery log you can view if you move log to sdcard and repeat the error

Make sure you have a fully charged battery when restoring your nandroid. I think if it's below 50%, you'll get the error. It's happened to me and after I put a fresh battery in, the restore went through without a hitch. I use Amom RA 2.2.1.

This. Also, on the advanced options of RA there is an option to copy recovery.log to the sd card. That will show you the details of the error.

Yeah, I had my apps backed up with titanium backup so I flashed cm7 on my phone again and brought my apps back. At the end, it was good this happened. The apps I said "I'll recover with titanium backup later" were the apps I didn't use but didn't delete because I thought I'd use then again. Now I realize I don't really care for them so now I have more internal space, hahaha!

although that might be the case, Clockwork backup isn't as good as amonra. I dont know if they made any changes since last time I used it which was 5months or so, but when you backed up using clockwork, it never saved wimax.img which contains your RSA keys.
Hence why I lost my 4g on my evo a while ago. happened to flash a bad radio file which deleted my rsa keys, and then when I tried to recover through clockwork I discovered that it never backed up my wimax.img file, and was SOL.
Hopefully they fixed this problem, I would hate to lose my 4g again.

I used to format /system every time I flashed a ROM on my gs2, but I saw in the numerous imei threads some posts about not doing so because it may be part of the lost imei issues. Do you do it ? Have you had issues ? I'm reluctant to do so , but feel it will be " beneficial to my flashing" if I did...

No lie I formatted my system the other day and right after tried to revert to a stock android backup that I made. And wasn't able to do so because it told me M.D.5 sum mismatch after I reverted to it earlier in the day. Huh is what I was like and after that clockwork mod recovery would let me restore a cm10 backup I made said something about couldnt restore system. So out of frustration I went back to being unrooted. Just couldn't take the problems with clockwork mod because that's what where the problems ly. It wasn't me it was the recovery

None what so ever. I really just flashed the stock back up right before I flashed my gsfree back up so no I made no changes what also ever. Some times when you format systems in clockworkmod recovery this could happen because it happen to me. Can't wait till ext4 touch recovery comes to us here in this forum. Not saying cwm recovery isn't nice but I never had any problems with other recoveries that have been offered.

There are ways to fix that issue with the MD5 sum mismatch. I've had it happen a few times and ran a few commands thru ADB and got it working.

Yes you are right. But I didn't want to go thru all of that. Really didn't have time so just unrooted my phone so there would be no more problems. I get like alot of people and become flash aholics. So I just stop it from being problem later down the road. Look I like rooting and adding mods to my phone like the next guy but there comes to a point where unnecessary issues can be avoided. Like the one I had.... but on the real tip I really enjoy the phone just the way it is STOCK I have zero issues and love the battery life that I have. So until some cooler roms come out I just don't have interest in cm9 or cm10 base roms. I mean I came from the sensation where I could flash a lot more variety of roms. I like this phone the way it is and really that's why I bought it.
