If you have a card reader you can flash a ruu through the bootloader also why would you want to unroot completely? Based on your info you wouldn't be able to root if you unrooted because Unrevoked requires usb connectivity

with rom manager touch? well really i'd like to have it to default stock so that I can sell it without all of my info on the phone, i.e. telephone number, voicemail etc. I figured that returning to stock would achieve that. it isnt currently activated but my voicemail number shows up. Ive wiped data, dalvik, and cache but idk what else to do prior to selling

You can definitely just unroot it and leave it S-OFF by doing what evo4gnoob said. Copy a stock ROM PC36IMG.zip file to the root of your sdcard using a card reader connected to your PC (If you go to the 1st link under "My Links" in my signature, there are 3 you can use at the bottom of that post) and rename the file to just "PC36IMG.zip". Put the card back into your device, and boot into Bootloader mode (hold volume down while pressing the Power button), and it should read the stock ROM. Then choose to install the update, and the device will be fully reset and back to stock.
By the way - unless you cancel your service first, the device will still be linked to your account. If you want to get rid of that information, you'll have to do a full data reset using an EPST code. There should be a thread around here somewhere that will give you the proper code (you'll need your MSL code).
ok Ive done exactly as you guys stated getting back to stock and unrooting.. was able to reroot using unrevoked3 so im good to go! thanks guys!!
as far as the msl, i dont know that and will just have to sell as is because my phone info is obviously still there. but thanks again for the fast responses and insight

MSL Reader from the Market will tell you what it is, but you need root to use it, so you'll have to flash Superuser, if you really want to get rid of your phone info (which is probably a good idea).

But if you let the phone reboot and re-activate, it'll just link back to your number, so if you don't want it to do that, you'll have to turn it off and cancel the service to it.
thanks again!

Good morning all. I unRooted my phone by running the RUU file on my computer with HTC Sync running, and it worked just fine. The only problem that I have now is that my Market does not work. I will try to download an app, new or previously purchased, and it will not download them. It says "Starting Download" and a few seconds later it will pop up in my Notification Bar that the download was unsuccessful.
I used the RUU posted in *OFFICIAL* RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.29.651.5_Radio_2.15. 00.09.01_NV_1.77_CNV_rel by Whosdaman.
Am I missing something? Should I try it again with an older RUU file?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I posted in the wrong forum, please let me know. I figured it was relevant here, as it has to do with unRooting and such. LOL
settings - applications - market
then clear cache
I tried that trick already. Also, when I unRooted, I had the 1.8ish version of the Market. I tried all the tricks to get the updater to automatically update the Market, but it never did. I resorted to finding a vending.apk and doing it myself. I'm not sure what this does, but I also did the dialing of ##786#.
Sorry for leaving that out of the OP, it's been a long night at work and I'm ready for sleepy time. I try my hardest to figure things out beforehand, because I don't want to bother y'all with piddly little questions. I just couldn't find the answer for myself this time.

Have you tried updating your profile? Settings-about phone-update profile.
Swyped from my HTC EVO running Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 4 loaded with all the goodies
Sure did. That was one of the first things I did. I went through and updated Firmware, Profile, PRL and Hardware. Wanted to be thorough on the process. LOL
Do ##data#, hit edit, go to data, once in data hit menu, finally hit reset
Sorry, I'm a bit of a noob. How do you do ##data#? Do I dial ##3282#?
strange that i just did the same thing and my market works
That's not strange, it sucks! LOL! Well, I'm glad to hear that it worked out for you brother. Hopefully we can get mine fixed, as I have to take it into the Sprint Store on Monday. They already know that my phone was rooted, so they told me if I had to bring it in again just to unRoot it. It's gonna look funny that I've had a phone since June, and it's not personalized in any way? LOL
reinstall gapps
I can't post a link as its proprietary.
but search google gapps .apk you'll find it.
Then clear the cache again if that don't work.
If that don't work, then your out of options.
LOL! I'll try it out. I appreciate all the help y'all.
Hello IAmTheTrueUI, I have a question for you. What method did you use to root your EVO and using this RUU did you get s-on in your hboot screen? I rooted using unrevoked 3.2.1 and it gave me the permanent s-off. I also used the RUU to unroot(just want to be able to in case I need to take it into Sprint) and everything was stock except I still had s-off. I've been reading about the s-on tool from unrevoked, but it says you may lose root forever and I don't want to try it if I won't be able to root again.
This is for anyone that would like to answer: If I use the son tool from unrevoked can I get root back? Has anyone tried it and been successful in rerooting their phone? Thanks all and much appreciated.

yes i have mutiple times after you flash the son tool you can just run unrevoked again and gain root once again
EDIT: this is what it says verbatim on the unrevoked wiki "Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update "
I used the unrEVOked 3.2.1 as well. Loved being rooted. Can't wait to fix this, take it back to the store real quick, then come back home and root again. LOL

you did flash the s-on tool right?
No, no I did not. I didn't think I had to unless I used the unrEVOked Forever method. Am I still able to do this if need be?
I just unrooted yesterday using the s-on tool and PC36IMG to bring to stock and it worked great with no issues. I just decided to go stock for a while until the new update rolls out. As matter of fact that was my second time using that method because I wanted to be sure it would work if I ever had to bring my phone in to Sprint. Good luck getting it fixed!
I truly hate to ask, but could you explain that method to me? I'm about ready to Root my phone again and just flash a ROM that just looks like a stock ROM.

Don't worry about the market. They're not going to use it for anything in the store and you can always reroot and get it back into working order.
It's actually good that you leave it look not personalized. Just last week I walked in with my phone overheating and rebooting. After their guy spent an hour looking at my phone, he said he could hold onto it even longer and "probably fix it" by doing a factory data reset. You'll be able to sidestep this by just telling them that you already did and that's why it looks like it does now. In fact, you could actually try that now to see if it makes your market problem go away.

I used the method in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141
There is a method there if you did not use Unrevoked but what I did was just download both of the files listed there to the root of my SD card>booted into recovery and flashed the s-on zip>used the power off option then booted into hboot and saw it said s-on>allowed it to load the 2.2 PC36IMG and it was done. I ran the lasted update after it was completed. I'm no expert so I hope this was helpful for you.
Hey xda community,
my friend recently got an evo and he asked me if i can root it for him.
I have a rooted evo too but i have a different version. he got the new 0004 version of the evo while mines is the 0003. i rooted mine using that whole rageagasintthecage method, and idk if i can root his like that.
my question is what is the best way to achieve full root on the new 0004 versions.
I know google could probably answer this but i rather have someone from the community help me out.
The most popular way is via unrevoked. Unless something has changed, it should root all versions.

anyone? is it a good guide?

Go there, download the install
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
Go there and install the hboot drivers
Lastly, install htc sync, then uninstall the program. On your phone go into settings > applications > development > check usb debugging.
After you've done that, connect your phone to your pc in charge only, then run the unrevoked reflash package. It'll take about 5 minutes and reboot about 2 times, let it run the full course.
I plan on removing unrevoked so that I can receive the latest update and then re-root. I only use wireless tethering and trying to get OpenVPN. Other than that, I don't use other root capabilities. Is this a bad idea (updating OTA)?
You can just update your rom, flash to a sense rom, update your prl and flash back. I don't recommend accepting the official OTA can you can lose your root.
I have just successfully rooted my evo4g just now. Before I can flash a rom, what are the other things I must do? (nand unlock/radio/pri/prl/etc)??

Well you should be nand unlocked if you used unrevoked. Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485 to get the radio, ect, you can use the combo flash if you like. Just make sure to backup your current rom, then flash,

Definitely do a backup, and then move the backup to your computer for safekeeping. The person before me provided the correct link for the radio upgrades.
After that, you should be set to flash. (Assuming you've picked out a ROM that suites your wants and needs.)

works like a champ for all hardware versions & you'll be rooted in 30 minutes.

See my post on the front page. but unrevoked does give you nand unlock. The earlier versions didn't, which you had to flash the unforever zip to get the nand unlock, but its been merged into the flash.
And after you root, you hold vol+down while turning the phone on, and you go to the bootloader, select recovery. You'll be on clockworkmod recovery, then you just select backup from backup/restore menu.

Thanks TR. I'll try that and see how it goes. I'm ultimately trying to get OpenVPN running and having problems getting the tun.ko file for my build. I don't have linux to compile my own for 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e, so I thought I'd try to update in the interim.
since im rooted and my phone has been backed up now...
is there a way to remove sprints bloatware? or would that only be through flashing?
I'm still a n00b to android flashing so i will be reading your guides...what other advantages can I expect from flashing to a new rom? (speed, battery life, etc)

You can remove the sprint apps by going into titanium backup, And depending on the rom, you will get speed, and kernels help with battery life. Generally, AOSP is faster cuz it doesn't have all the sprint crap in it.
any links to the next process after rooting/nand unlocked is done? I've read about people losing their 4g keys? how do i ensure this wont happen?
kernel/radio/rom flashing? anyone got rom recommendations?

So you're currently unrooted at the moment? Have you tried the simple things first? such as a battery pull, and then updating the profile and prl, via menu/settings/system updates. Also, some info on your phone would help figure some things out. What radio version are you on, what software version, pri version, and your bootloader shows S-on or S-off?
If I was in your situation, and just got the phone, I'd run an RUU to completely wipe it and put it back to stock. Find an RUU here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060&highlight=hboot-0.97+ruu : If you don't want to use RUU, you could simply load a PC36IMG to your sd card, boot to the bootloader, and let it update that way. Either way, if it works again after flashing back to stock, great. If not, at least we have a baseline of knowing exactly where you stand, and not wondering what hte previous owner may or may not have done to possibly jack things up.
Well first, I would download the wimax keys checker from the market to double check to make sure they are there, cuz I have seen people lying about stuff like that.

Sure you can, but why? You are selling it, right? It will still work normally and if the buyer is into rooting, he or she will be grateful and if the person is not into rooting, the device will automatically be unrooted when he or she accepts an OTA update from Sprint.
UPDATE: follow the steps here to unroot.
In the meantime, I don't want a problem with an inaccurate item description, as they make take it into Sprint for something.
I understand and updated my previous post to include a link to help you unroot.
Thank you 10char
You're very welcome. Enjoy the rest of your day...
How do I eliminate or decrease the possibility that it can't be rooted after O di this?
I'm not sure I follow you. I mean there is nothing you can do to prevent the buyer from rooting if he or she wants to do so.

Ok please help let me know what you guys think...
In theory could this same thing work given the following situation. My phone is rooted but the power button recently shorted and stopped working. Sprint didnt flag my phone as rooted but said get it back to stock and we will exhange it. Do you think it could work if I flash the odex using Rom MANAGER which ive never used to flash but im useless flashing through recovery with no "power button" to use as enter. Once I flash the rom using rom manager it will be back on sense from there can I then unroot without using the power button though bootloader or even HTC Sync because at that point I think HTC sync will recognize it? I hope all that makes sense im just trying to get my phone replaced. :/ Thanks!
**UPDATE** Scratch that Rom Manager took me to clockwork
Someone tell me how I can clean my phone, I need to wipe it completely, and reinstall everything from scratch. Really wish I had rooted first, would have been alot easier, alot more resources for root.

Menu>Settings>SD & Phone Storage>Factory Reset
let me repeat my question, and get more specific. I need to wipe all data off my phone, everything.
Then I need to get the OS back on it.
Can someone tell me if you can do this without root, I need to completely clear all partitions AFAIK and then get a new CLEAN UNHACKED OS onto my phone.
Factory reset is not enough
RUU is not enough (alone anyway)
I need to get the flashable regions of my phone totally clear of malicious code.
bump for edit for previous
I don't think you have any options without root...only other option without root is boot into bootloader and clear storage.
For curiousity, what did you do that you need to undo and how could you have pushed "malicious code" onto other partitions without root?
unless you work for HTC or know somone that does, i thnk you are pretty boned, even contacting them directly all ive gotten is the usual "it cant be done" line so ....just wait for the hboot to get hacked and do it then i suppose..
What Android version are you on and your phone is currently rooted correct?
He stated in original post that it is NOT rooted.
4.24 gb EVO
hacked as hell
i think it was rooted before not to my knowledge, and flashed. also calendar exploited via google, I hope i can get some help outside the dev forum, because I i know they dont like questions there, thats why im posting here instead.
cant clean it now that i have OTA'd to GB.
I am finding alot of cool app engines along my trials and tribulations. makes me wish I had not stopped working in security several years back.
Someone gonna give a guy a hand? I am as trustworthy as they come if you are worried about anything getting out and about.
If it was rooted before, go into the bootloader and check if it says S-ON or S-OFF. If it's S-OFF, you can flash a recovery and now you're rooted again.
If it's S-ON, no, you can't do anything right now.
yeah im screwed

Sigh...ok...I'll bite. Why do you think your phone is doing this? What evidence?
And does the tin foil mess up your hair?
i watch the logs, i see the mic and or cameras come on, i see the filesys filling where I cant go see it because im not root, i see the traffic as it xmits it from local host to local host, i see the traces of the encryption keys and stunnels. This is only one instance.
I hope there is someone around here who has something more to offer than the people outside the dev forums, im getting killed following the rules.
So let me get this straight and my apologizies for sounding confuzed becasue every reply has been all over the place and has been of no real help to you yet..
Your on GB version 4.24 correct? Previously Rooted without you knowing? Your trying to get back too 100% stock as well? I hope I'm following this so far.
1st, the easiest way, download Root Checker from the Market and that will tell you right off the bat if your rooted or not. If thats not possible, enter bootloader as stated before and verify S-Off at top of screen. If so, flash Amon_Ra Recovery (rename to PC36IMG.zip if not already and place on root of SD Card). Enter bootloader and let it scan, apply update and from there you can do what you need to do. If it says S-On but you know your rooted, go to xHausx Auto Root guide, download the Froyo 3.70.651 Stock rom and place on Root of Sd Card named PC36IMG.zip, enter bootloader, let it scan and apply update, that will take you too 100% stock Froyo with hBoot 2.10 and you can apply GB update if desired or root with whatever method of your choice.
Once again, sorry if this is not what you were wanting but its irritating when you get the run around and people talk about tin foil hats and ridiculous stuff...and agreed, very hard to follow rules when most replies are worthless.

Read 1 post below yours, only way to figue out how to help is to know the details. Good 2 cents though.
I will give it a go, after I upgraded OTA it made me s-on, so i think im just screwed now.
I tried the ruu to go back but as you know it says too old files etc
i imagine this will do the same but i will try anything once, the guys at sprint gave me the go ahead to do whateever i need to do to try to backrev this thing, and if i brick it they will replace it so im up for ANYTHING PEOPLE
If you were originally s-off, the ota shouldn't have updated hboot. It can't turn you s-on, unless you reverse it yourself first..
Which means you were always s-on, and currently there is no way to assist you.
lets start over. are u S-OFF or S-ON? that will determine what ur options are.

There isn't anything that can be done for you at the moment. You said your s-on which means your not rooted which in turn means your bootloader is locked and you can't install a recovery and install the files you need to fix your problem. So I would call Sprint and tell em your device is being defective.

If you could read his original post, he said - it is currently not rooted - who cares if it was rooted before or not. He has S-ON = NOT rooted = he is out of luck...
That's my 3 cents
