Sprint Update - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This morning I got the message to update to the EL26 or whatever it is. I clicked to update. I don't know if it finished or not, or what happened. But I clicked on my About Phone section and everything says the same thing it said before. But my internet on my phone is worse than it was before. Anyone else have this issue? Is the update good to have? How can I try to update again?

Well MissLani it sounds like your update did not go through... When you go to about phone, under build number does it say GINGERBREAD EK02 or does it say EL29? If you still see EK02 (which will also be seen somewhere in the baseband version, and kernel version) than the update did not go through. If it says EL29 they you are good to go with the newest update. It is somewhat controversial on whether or not the update is good to have. Some people have better results on EK02 and others see some improvements on EL29. I am running EL29 and prefer it over the EK02.

Wife got update message and bricked her stock phone. She is out of town, so I did not get a chance to investigate. Sprint store replaced it. New one updated without issue.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk

It still says EK02. & now my battery won't charge anymore. Have had it plugged in for hours and it still says 5%. Tried different charger. Same thing. It shows that it is charging. But keep getting critical battery low message.

Sounds like something may have gone wrong during the upgrade process. You may have to take it to a Sprint store and have it replaced. I'm assuming you havn't rooted.

No, I am rooted.
I can't even use my Back up app to save everything, cuz as soon as it starts, the phone shuts off. It charged yesterday. Just woke up & now it won't charge anymore.

Try Titanium Backup and see if that works, if not, you can also save your App's as APK's through APPs backup program, which isn't bad, though you won't get to save the apk's data.
If none of this methods work out for you, then do a full system recovery *restore* and try to update before reinstalling all your things, then after the update, just do a soft/hard reset to make sure any lil data is gone, and you'll start fresh with EL29

Yah my phone will not hold a charge at all anymore. I'm prolly gonna have to take it to sprint store later..
What do I need to do so that they don't know I rooted my phone? How do I get it back to original state?

cannot update prl or profile?

okay ive seen countless threads on this with the epic on several different forums. most had to return their phones for replacements.
is there a fix for this or what? is it froyo that is messing the phone up or a hardware issue?
ive tried all the tricks...etc: airplane toggle, hard reset, data profile reset with msl and nothing works. i keep getting a internal error message.
im about to take this thing into sprint this weekend.
Try going back to DI18, I know on the evo with some roms aka cyanogen. you cannot update the prl.

yeah but id like to run froyo, not 2.1.
so you think this is a software issue then? seems weird as not everyone has this issue.
Flash back to froyo after your update.
I'm not sure what your issue is. I was able to update my prl just fine on bonsai. Try what djharby suggested and if it works, update back to dk28. Your prl should be unaffected by what rom you flash once it is updated.
what prl are you on?

the newest thanks to QPST. but not being able to update my profile bothers me.
If you have a data connection on 3g or 4g updating profile isn't really necessary. It just updates the network configuration so unless you make changes to your account such as adding on hotspot from sprint everything should work... atleast I believe so

This has happened to me from time to time and appears to just be a network error on Sprint's side. Try again tomorrow.
I've had this problem for weeks now and on other phones in my family plan it updates without issue. I can tell you the problem has to stem from being on DK28 at one point or another as in my case.
I finally got tired and broke down and went to a Sprint Repair center. After 45 minutes of resets/re-activation and other troubleshooting the tech basically told me he couldn't fix it. So I paid $35 bucks to have an expedited phone replacement instead of having to go through Samsung and waiting a week or more for a replacement phone.
Bottom line - going to DK28 causes damage (software of course) to your phone that odin is unable to clear.
I personally will be staying away from rooting/messing with DK28 on my replacement Epic. I'll just wait for the official release whenever the hell that comes out.

My first Epic did this and was replaced by Sprint. That was before dk28 di18 had just pushed. Many have reported it on brand new Epics right out the store so I wouldn't make claims that dk28 and odin breaks phones or just about everyone here would be up **** creek! The problem stems from the msl run a logcat while trying the update
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Yea my prl and profile update fine... and I'm on dk28 and used odin. But what was so imporant about updating your profile? And maybe it was the custom settings on there that you changed that caused this problem

got sick of the issues and i traded for a new evo. thanks anyways guys. ill never buy a samsung again!
has anyone found a way to fix this. this started happening to me today. i'm going to sprint to swap it out. sprint tried everything on their end and they made me a trouble ticket so i can trade it in tomorrow. i'm almost up with my 30 days. i kept trying to update my profile and prl and i keep getting an error message. i tried talking to sprint (different reps) and they kept getting me to take the battery out. they all said the same things word for word like they were reading off a paper. anyways it didn't work. i keep getting that they profile/prl could not be updated and to contact customer care if the problem persists. and the error says either unknown error or internal error. so just wondering if anyone found a solution.
SN: question...and this is just me throwing stuff out there...does anyone think that i'm having trouble updating my profile and prl because of the 2.2 update coming tomorrow? i'm jsut guessing...first android phone so just a guess
yeah, same's happening to me
my profile updated, but only b/c Sprint sent out a signal to my phone
if I try to do it on my own, it won't work
I'm running on Froyo as well and to be honest, I'm annoyed!
so, I went back to d18, then to 2.2
and I still can't do it, wtf!
Started doing it for me. It worked fine prior to the update. I am going to ODIN back to D18 then start over...
Profile and PRL
I had the problem also on DI18. I updated to EB13 using odin. Then flashed the Epic Experience. It updates just fine now!
I'm having the same problem after updating to EB13, tried doing it a second time with the samsung tool but same problem.
planning to walk into a sprint store to get an exchange. though i don't have the extended warranty and passed my 30 days so i guess Samsung will have to do the exchange? Also is there a way to verify it is not refurbished?
i've been able to update my prl but i just put on a new rom and I havent tried again yet. Do you get an error message?

i get either an internal error message or unknown error message. i still haven't been able to update my profile or prl. i've read that some can't even update firmware (i haven't tried). i just gave up. sprint told me there was no need to update them if everything is working (ie calls, texts, internet, ect.) and that continuosly trying to will get you error messages. i dont know how true that last statement is as they may have just been trying to get rid of me lol.
I had the same problem and it took 2 calls to work out. On the first, the tech claimed it was EB13. On the second, the tech reset the sprint switch for my phone and that seems to have worked. It took a little bit of time to explain to the tech that desire to update was to stay up-to-date vs. the real need to update (don't get me started on this one...) but at least he finally did something.
Before the second call I flashed back to DI18 to see if it was indeed the update, but the errors were the same.
I recommend finding an adventurous tech who's willing to play around with the system a little before you switch phones. Personally, I really don't want a refurb when I bought new.

Taking phone back to Sprint...

Due to an issue where my phone will randomly turn off on its own and not being able to turn it back on for an extended period of time or being able to charge it (I think it was it too humid an area for too long), I want to take my phone back to Sprint but am rooted. So, I ran the s-on tool and have been trying to get completely back to stock but haven't been able to completely because I can still see super user in the app drawer. What is the best way around this? I tried flashing 3 or 4 different PC36IMG from bootloader but continually got an error saying something about my version being older? I was finally able to flashed a rooted stock image but still see superuser and can't get rid of it! As a last resort, I decided I would just go to system updates and let it upgrade me to gingerbread. However, when I click on system updates/software update, it searches for awhile and then says there are no updates available!!! What am I missing and what is the best way to just plain start from non-rooted scratch????
I can still see super user in the app drawer.

If you have s-on, then you are unrooted. There is no need to flash a stock rom if you are already on one. The SU app can just be uninstalled.

That means you are trying to install a rom that is older than the one you have now. You probably need the latest version.
Again. SPRINT SERVICES ROOTED PHONES! Please use the search feature.
From what I have tried and read, you can't uninstall superuser. As an aside, I decided to accept the ota advice figured it was the quickest and easiest way to be sure I wasn't rooted. I don't mind being temporarily unable to reroot cause I'm sure a new method is close. Here's the weird thing though, I did the ota update to 4.24 and installed it, but still have Superuser in the app drawer! Wtf? I even did a factory reset but it still is there! How the hell do I get rid of that program!?

I believe he is already unrooted so this question doesn't matter lol. Some people don't read when invaluable advice such as yours is provided and they are left freaking out about the SU app.
Yes, I am unrooted because my local Sprint store checks for root. What makes you so sure it doesn't matter to sprint? So, can either of you answer my original questions?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Super User gets placed in the system/app folder so as far as the phone is concerned it's a part of the core OS and cannot be removed without root. It honestly should not be a concern. You just have Super User preinstalled for when we get root for 2.3 OTA.

It doesn't matter to Sprint because Sprint says so.
Just had my EVO serviced and I'm on Synergy ROM and got the phone back without any problems but a friend of mine took his in and got it back returned to stock unrooted so I guess depends where you go.
I read the PDF but don't see how that means sprint doesn't care. All I read is what sounded like sprint cs employees talking about policy. How is that official? Or am I missing something?

What was your phone in for, hardware or software? It's supposed to be that hardware issues (charge port, screen, buttons,, etc..) do not require that the phone bo returned to stock. On a phone with software issues we are supposed to return the phone to stock, run updates then troubleshoot. I know it blows getting that finely tuned custom ROM/Kernel wiped but the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.
Now I personally will not flash a customers phone back to stock unless there is no other option but will generally start with a wipe to clear any crap out of the phone. Then again, when I was working with teamwin and orrebmas I was rooting/unrooting and flashing all the major ROMs as many as 10-15 times a day so I'm a bit more familiar with custom ROMs than most techs.

As a tech I can verify that for one, only Sprint employees have access to that forum and the service subforum from which that came is for ASC techs. Second, almost the entire thread was techs complaining about why should they service rooted phones for free. These are the same people that claim there is no way to be sure if a phone is rooted.
OK, now I see, I didn't realize you were a Sprint tech. Anyway, you know my situation, what would you recommend? What could be causing my random shutoffs related issues? Also, I've only had the phone since March. Is my issue covered by warranty? I don't have insurance

Thermal shutoff bug: If the phone gets to hot it will shut off and not turn on til it's cooled down. The sensor can get out of calibration and require lower and lower temps before it will boot. The worst case I have personally observed was a phone that needed to be below freezing before it would boot. This bug will also cause the charging circuit to not charge (it thinks it's too hot).
In a room that's no more than 75deg Fahrenheit turn on all the radios and run neocore interactive mode. Let it run for atleast an hour. If the phone shuts off immediately check to see if the kickstand is hot. Now I don't mean warm but hot. If the kickstand is not hot then your phone's temp sensor is out of calibration and requires that the phone be replaced. This is a known issue or "Device KIS". If the phone is within it's one year warranty there is no charge for the replacement. If the phone is out of warranty it is up to the discretion of the tech and/or manager to assist you in getting it replaced via Authorized Exchange or "AE".
I ran through the program as you suggested and the kickstand wasn't hot and didn't power cycle at all. Then what?

I have three Sprint stores in my area. Two of them are managed technically inept managers, one of them is managed by a techno-god, I don't know what he's doing managing a Sprint shack but so be it. I talked to him about rooted Evos and he said that the other two stores don't check for it because they don't know anything about the concept of rooting. But HE DOES because it's hard to guarantee a repair on a rooted phone. According to him, it's up to the store's management and also up to Sprint. They don't necessarily check for "root" but if servicing a phone requires a software update, they're going to use a stock RUU and voila! That was my experience.

Unique issue with crawling processor speeds

I've got an Epic 4G that hasn't had any hardware issues in the past. It's been converted to CWM5 MTD, and the rom I've been using without any major problems for the past several months is RandomKing's ThunderHawk 5.1 version of 2.3.6, along with and FC09 modem and his custom ShadowKernel. Today, after shutting down my phone as usual, it froze on the charging screen that comes up when you plug in a power source. I waited and waited, but finally took out the battery. When I attempted to restart, everything seemed to happen in slow motion. After 10 minutes, when the unlock screen showed up for the rom, everything froze again. I booted into CWM recovery (took like 6 minutes), and even the response to button presses there are slow. I've cleared cache, dalvik, fixed permissions, and am in the process of (again, extremely slowly) clearing data/reinstalling ThunderHawk.
Unfortunately, I've not been able to Odin to stock FC09 yet because the download mirrors for the file are so slow and unreliable. What the heck happened, and what should I do?
Wipe data, and both caches, reflash the rom and you should be good....hopefully

Not sure what that is, but if it's on the SD card, it's been wiped several times. Also, removed. I've Odined (no issues) to EL30 stock, EC05 stock, and FC09 stock... but the problem persists.
I've spent at least 60 hours on this phone over the last two years of owning it... and not to mess around with it - just to get it working. I'm sick and tired of the ****ty support Samsung has provided, sick of having to flash custom roms just to get things like the keyboard to work correctly, and sick of it all freezing up whenever I need it most (even with stock). I had it replaced for a fee, and not much changed.
I will never buy straight-up Samsung again. Up for an upgrade in two weeks - anyone know anything I can't find on engadget about the Moto Photon Q 4G LTE on Sprint? Looks nice, but I want to know if anyone has anything to say that would dissuade me from getting that, and instead opting for a Galaxy Nexus (*sigh* at least it's got Google software support) or the EVO 4G LTE (ugly HTC One X version for Sprint).

It has a smaller battery than both, better processor than gnex, same as evo lte. Do you like any ui in particular? Sense, aosp, or Motorola's UI? Screen is HD on nexus and evo, less sub pixels on nexus due to pentile, and more real color on evo. Obviously the photon has a keyboard, is that incredibly important to you? Try em all at sprint and see what you think. Gnex will have best software support. Its all up to what you prioritize.

Going to sprint repair center do i need to go stock/unrooted

I got an appt with sprint tech support or repair center whatever its called . I got to walk into one those stores in my area today in about 4 hours . Ive called sprint to many times about getting to many phantom voicemails, calls not going through, my phone not ringing when someone else calls me etc.. so they said to take it in . Im currently running Calks 3.0 GB rom EL29 and when you turn on the phone i have the yellow triangle show up..
Do i need to revert back to completely stock ?
or can i just take in like that and will they service it that way?
TIA to anyone that responds back with help....
MODS i know this has been asked before but i searched and didnt find the answer ..

dont want to drive all the way to the sprint store for them to tell "OH your device is rooted and we wont work on a device that is rooted". or tell me oh the reason your device is not working could be cause its rooted....
EDIT 2 : installed stock rooted EL 29 and when phone booted it notified me of the update available "ICS" gonna actually let it install since i know stock ICS sucks. .

Well i had odined back to stock rooted EL29 and then after reboot a minute later i got the notification to update so i did then that happen about 3 times till finally got to Fi27 and i dont have root...
I went into the Sprint repair center so they could look at it . THE Rep asked me "so whats wrong with your phone?" so i start telling her that i my phone wont ring some times and that some times it will ring till the callers phone has rang about 4 times and then she says" Oh thats normal the phone is set up that way its set up to have that delay" i was like WROOOOONNGGG no way any phone is set up to have a delay .. well we went back and forth and they didnt even touch my phone i could have been on any custom rom and they wouldnt have cared . she just put some notes in my acct for the next rep to help me....
I also to prove to her the problem grabbed one of the phones on display that is active it was a EVO 4g LTE and called my phone from it and my phone didnt ring till the 4th ring hanged up and then called the EVO phone back and the evo rang on first ring.. All she said was oh its our network theres a tower down went back and forth and figured she dont know what she's talking about....
Then called sprint and the rep did a RTN or something like that which included a full wipe and restore of factory settings and now during the day i have to see if it works or not.

We had this happen to us during NV updates in the area. Not sure if that was it or another issue so I'll throw this out as well: Did you upgrade from an older phone and keep the phone? If so, make sure it's turned off. If it's still happening you'll probably want to see if they're doing NV upgrades in the area as we had all sorts of funky stuff happening. (Towers reporting wrong times, etc.)

Unfortunately the antenna for this phone seems to be a big sticking point for a lot of folks. Now that NV is almost done around here I am doing better; the recent modem updates helped as well. But there are still some problems.... like a certain location I know I have to get off the phone because the tower handoff fails every time.
the radio on this phone sucks thats why im undecided on what phone to upgrade too.. I need to change phone cause of this problem but what phone should i get is the problem
SGS3 almost the same as this phone yeah i know it has some new features but i feel like since its a samsung it most likely will have the same issue : weak radio...
HTC EVO 4g LTE very low on memory . many complain about it having issues connecting to LTE (where LTE is available) but HTC does make good Radio's ..
Galaxy note 2 has many new features it is big in size but ill get used to it and ill use a bluetooth so i wont look crazy holding up to my ear but since theres no LTE in my area i cant be able to talk and surf the web (the evo and sgs3 could) its still a samsung and samsung makes weak radios ....

If you can convince them - honestly, whittle it down to 3-4 and then take them out to your regular work sites and test them.
Then based on how they perform where you need it to you can make a call.
Not sure how it works with Sprint but would think they should allow this kind of testing before you purchase - or upgrade in your case. (MVNO we use does this...)
what i know of sprint is they let you use the device for 14 days and you have to decide if you want it or not....
also i was thinking of trying tmobile out cause im tired of sprints slow 3g data.. I dont have Sprints 4g service everywhere i go... just want to see if anyone who lives in the inland empire California can tell me there experience with it...

[Q] Epic in SUPER SLOW SLOW MODE. (kinda bricked)

Ok so a little after midnight i rebooted my phone cuz it was being flaky.
Then it got stuck on the Cyanogen SGS boot screen from PAC 20.1 I tryed to ODIN cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5. I got that to stick but every time i would flash a rom it would get stuck and end up and the samsung boot screen again. i tryed to flach cm9.1 and it hang at the BLM MTD part for a very long long time. then it went to the gray screen(the backgound of cwm 6) so that didn't work. So i tryed to ODIN stock EL30 EC05 just like hear http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
Well that ended with the phone booting up after about 40 minues. But i could not unlock the dam thing. So i did it again & left it for an hour & now its just siting there 12:19 on the clock but i cant unlock the phone. the sprint 4G boot aniy was/is all chopy and the sound cuts in and out. IDK i think my Epic is Epicing F(ced
(i'v been ODINing & reading xda all night:crying: )
Any ideas?
How about just going back to 100% stock FC09? Use re-partition, and you may even want to consider EFS clear (unless not on Sprint). Try that and let it run on that for a day. Note any issues that appear.
If no issues, then try to flash another rom.
Worst case scenario, your flash memory is on it's last leg and heading to become kaput. Flash memory only has so many reads & writes before it kicks the bucket. Constant flashing of roms over the lifetime of this phone diminishes the lifespan faster than a regular user.
A regular user wouldn't even come close to the read/write red zone for this flash memory, but a custom rom user/tester could (especially given the age of our phone).
Which is precisely why I find a somewhat stable ROM and stick with it for about 3 months, then i update/switch ROMs

I typically only flash stable roms and stick with one for 4-8 months before doing a fresh Odin, re-root and new rom flash. I'm your normal user here; I stick with what I know works.

A big ole nothing. I've tried to get discounts and upgrade fees waived before, and they have given nothing. I'm a 10+ year customer.
Once a nicer than Nexus 4--Nexus device comes out, or if Sprint's suck-tacular service becomes even more sucky, I'm jumping to T-mobile.

SGS III Purple for $0.99 FTW
I really loved my Epic & i'l be back around the forums, my buddy has a busted Epic so maybe i can make one working phone out of the two.:good:
zman I have the EXACT problem with my Epic 4g, it's brand new I have only had it a handful of days and I haven't a clue as to what caused this error, my clock also reads 12:19 and the screen is unresponsive, so I can't slide unlock the screen to get usb debugging checked either. I am by no means new to android, flashing roms or anything else so this wasn't some noob error on my part.
I have messaged QBKing77 and he is as perplexed as I am, and well I figure if he can't figure it out, we might just be screwed.
Did you get yours fixed? If so could you please share what you did.
If i get it fixed I'll be sure to let you all know how i did it.
I have been playing with my new Purpal SGS III

Did you ever get your Epic back to life?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Nope. I had it fixed then it went back to the same old issue. I've tried every version of odin, Heimdall and using every possible pit, .tar and md5 file combination I can come up with and I cannot remember what I used the first time to fix it. blah
Did you get yours fixed or figure out what the problem was? If I ca
