Resume play with headset in Google Music? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

How do you resume play using the headset button instead of having to turn the screen on and tapping play? This is super annoying how I have to take my phone out of my pocket every time I want to resume.
It works if I pause, then play in a few seconds, but if I wait a few minutes, I have to turn the screen on....

Seems to work with me on stock 4.0.2 and the included Samsung headset. Today I stopped listening to music for over 2 hours, then just put the headphones in, hit the button, and it started playing.

I just timed it, I paused for 3:30 and tried to resume but it doesn't work unless I tap the scteen

I get that, too. I think it has to do when the phone goes into deep sleep. I don't remember if it happened in stock roms as well. I've been on custom 4.0.3 rom since practically the day I bought the phone.
You don't really have to tap on the screen to resume. Waking up the phone via the power button will make it respond to the headset button input. So instead of whipping out the phone every time, you can just reach into your pocket and press the power button then press the headset button. It's a poor workaround, though.

Still don't have to. It can be sitting on the table for 20min and I can put the headphones in and start music. And its not like I'm doing anything fancy. Set up Google Music normally and haven't messed with it. Just works.

Try this, pause the music, DO NOT unplug the headphones and let it sit around for 30 secs or so, then press the headset button to resume playback. If I unplug the headset while paused then plug it back in, headset button will work.

I has this happen.. I hit the button two times and it responded finally. I was using poweramp though.

1) headphones in
2) started song, turned off screen & listened for a couple minutes
3) pause with headphones
4) sit for ~3 min screen off
5) screen still off, headphones in, hit button
6) music starts playing instantly.

Well, it doesn't work for me. It might be a custom ROM or 4.0.3 thing.

I typically run into this when I use the bluetooth audio in my car. With my Nexus One running CM7 I was always able to just sit down, wait a couple seconds for bluetooth to connect, and hit play, all without having to take the phone out of my pocket.
With Galaxy Nexus running stock 4.0.2 the bluetooth still automatically connects when I turn the car on, but play/pause doesn't work until I open up Music and manually hit play. Will try just powering phone on briefly tomorrow.
For those who say they can't reproduce this: have you disconnected your phone from power? The phone doesn't appear to ever enter deep sleep while on a charger, so if it has something to do with deep sleep as someone suggested, that would prevent this.

Mine is not on power when this happens. I am away from my desk a lot at work and I pause/resume frequently to talk to coworkers. So this is very frustrating for me.

Mine works the same whether plugged in or not, I should add.

Same thing happens to mine. I have a single button inline mic on my headphones. One the Nexus One, I could hit the button at anytime to play and it worked just fine. Now I have to double tap the button to get it to work. And it's not completely reliable. I sometimes have to spam the button to get it to come alive.
This is odd because according to my battery usage, my phone hardly ever goes into deep sleep, yet the headphone controls have trouble waking the phone.
I've tried this with UberMusic and Google Music using my headphones and Bluetooth receiver in my car, where it struggles even more. It just doesn't readily respond to the button input. Basically the same problem as this guy: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24364
Anyone come up with a solution

hello.
I thought I had a hardware problem with my Galaxy S2 and posted a thread about it in the i9100 forum.
but some googling brought me to this page. I have the same problem, and seeing how you guys are on different hardware makes me suspect (hope for) a software solution.
any help would be greatfully accepted, this is really annoying.
a better work around for the moment is to install Jays Headset Control from the market, it's free. there is an option somewhere in there that 'beeps' whenever you press the button. so now when the phone is in my pocket i can press and hold until i hear the beep, which means i can then press again to continue playing.
hope that helps a bit.
currently running android 2.3.6

Play music in standby

I know Ive seen this done on other phones and Ive searched high and low on the forum to no avail. Is there a cab tweak that will allow WMP to continue playing while on standby.
You shouldn't need any add-on or tweak to do this - unless you are playing thru the speaker. WMP should continue to play on wired and BT headsets even in standby.
S
The issue is seen when playing music through the TF3D player itself out through the speaker, and the system locking through S2U2. You can't turn the screen off or else playback will stop.
Someone posted a solution for what sounded like the same problem, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4468939&postcount=14
They stated that it is actually caused by S2U2, and there is a setting within the program that will fix your issue.
However, this doesn't fix it for me. Worth a shot to try though, so I know if its just me or not.
You can use ShutXP to turn off just the screen (instead of going into standby) to accomplish your needs. However, this isn't the most ideal solution.
Explained:
It seems that the power button driver doesn't turn the screen off it puts the device into standby. That is why when you try and turn of the screen with the power button ur music turns off. Its just like a computer. If you use psshutxp and use that to specifically turn off the screen the music will continue to play.

Actually, after doing the option mentioned in the other thread, it will still cut off the music if you just press the power button. My solution (which works for me, at least) is while listening to music in the Touch Flo tab, I press start, then enable S2U2 by clicking on its icon. The S2U2 screen then shows up. I tap anywhere on the S2U2 unlock screen (without actually trying to unlock it) THEN I press the power button. Somehow, that's my workaround to keep music playing through the phone speakers while the screen is off.
Hope it works for you.
I have thesame problem. The default WMplayer works even in standby but all other players like coreplayer, pocketmusic, etc stops when I press standby. So what's in WMplayer that made it continue to play even in standby?
If u press the power button to send the phone into standby the music stops. However if u just leave the phone and allow it to enter standby automatically (set at 30 secs for me) it will continue to play the music.
start playing a song, go to menu, options, buttons and set Toggle Screen to a button. Then when you press that button it will turn off the screen. Works on the Fuze..should work on the TP2 as well
Another solution would be to use gyrator2, and create a rule that when running WMP it blanks the screen when turned face-down.
(remember if adding gyrator to a TP2 to disable the "hang up call when turned upside-down" option as that's when speakerphone is supposed to kick in, not hang up the phone!)

my wm does not do this, when i hit the top button in wmplayer it still cuts the music off
since I upgraded to 6.5 the screen will turn off automatically (after the time you've specified in energysettings) and the tf3d audioplayer continues the playback. If I switch of the device the playback will stop, so let the device switch the screen of by itself. At 6.1 the screen always stays activated.
I've got a similar issue and some noob questions:
Regardless of if i have headphones connected or not, WMP stops playing within a few seconds of the screen shutting off. This happens regardless of if I let the screen turn off on its own or if i do it manually.
I went into the power settings page and disabled "turn off device if not used for ".
Now the backlight dims, but the screen never really shuts off (unless you push the power button). WMP works like a champ, but I have a few questions/concerns:
Is the above behavior normal for a completely 'stock' phone?
How bad is that for battery life?
Is there a better way to accomplish the same thing (turning off the screen, but maintaining playback)?
Based on the option in the settings page, im assuming that more then just the LCD turning off is actually occurring when the screen blanks out?
Thanks in advance,
Chris
Mine turns off the music whenever I press the power button, whether on WMPlayer or TouchFlo, when playing on the speaker. When I hooked the phone up to external power it does the same. When I hooked it up to external power and to my cars speakers through an FM Transmitter, with the transmitter being plugged into to headphone/lineout jack the music stayed playing.
This is not due only to S2U2...because I did a hard reset...and it still has this issue, without any added hardware on the stock Rom on a Tilt2.
My Samsung Epix with its stock 6.1 Rom never had this problem. Music always stayed playing.
No fix yet?

Music Player randomly changing songs

I know I'm a newb but I have been lurking on here for about a year. Heres my problem:
This only happens when I'm driving my motorcycle. The headphones I'm using have a mic. I tried putting the phone in different places(backpack, pocket, jacket, etc.) with no changes. Could it be the headphones that are messing this up. Anyone else have this problem? thanks.
The songs play normally when I just walk around or just standing still.
If your screen is on, the actualy cord hitting the skip/back button for the controls can cause it to change. Happens to me all the time.

I wish that was the case but I always lock the screen.
Hmm awkward...are you using the like honeycomb music player? Because that one does have some issues. But I'll be back...need to go for a quick run ><.
What ROM are you using? I have always used CyanogenMod. I ride a motorcycle as well, and when i hold the volume up/down buttons it will skip forward or backwards. It actually works out really nice, since i can change songs while riding.

List of bugs for SPH-L710

First bug is the audio bug when listening to music and a call comes in music stops and music is set to resume after call and audio basically dies i have to unplug whatever is in either headphones or mp3 and play the Music then reconnect while playing it is so annoying
Second bug i encounter sometimes when i answer a call it sometimes auto ends call instantly
Third not really a bug but its difficult to take a screenshot with buttons and sometimes swiping the palm moves the page
Everybody post bugs within the phone here hopefully if it gets enough replies maybe Sprint/ Samsung will see this :0

Ha the beauty of the internet. Thought it was a bug too. I don't have any problems with the music coming back on.
I did have scenario where i used a charger and the screen would freeze. Then when I unplug the charger the screen would unfreeze.

Happy to see this posted. I was riding my road bicycle today and use Map My Ride for my biking stats while listening to music.
Well I I just got my Sgs3 and was assuming everything would go fine on my ride. Nope, didn't happen after a few miles and songs into my ride my music stopped and all audio for that matter. When I was finally done I unplugged my headphones and couldn't even get sound to come through my external speakers either using the music player or Youtube.
Finally, I tried making a phone call and my ear speaker was ringing so I switched over to my external speaker which then started working. This in turn seemed to reset the problem.
I was freaking out cause I've only had the phone for 2 days. I did read over in Androidforums.com that people are having problems with sound going out particularly in phone calls and have had to have the mother board replaced. Many users seem to be international though so hopefully this isn't the case for us and our is software related.
Also I feel like my back button lags somewhat. Not sure if anyone else notices that.
Edit: Forgot the bug that when I press home button it doesn't always take me to my main home screen, it takes me to the next one over and I did check to make sure the main home screen I want is set in the Edit home screens option.

LG Tone+ (HBS-730) bluetooth headphones

I've been using this headset/heaphones for a while now, previously with my Galaxy Nexus on 4.2.2 and 4.3, and I totally love them -- I wear them almost 24/7 as I use them a lot for making calls and listening to music while at work, as well as for music while working out, and I even pair them up with my HTPC in the bedroom for when i want to watch something while the g/f is sleeping.
But ever since getting my Nexus 5 I've had a couple issues with them, which probably is because of android 4.4. The main issue is that when I press the skip buttons to go to the next song the screen comes on, which it didnt use to do before, and that can be annoying. Also, i often have to press the buttons multiple times to get it to actually skip the songs, whereas before it would reliably change the tracts with a single press. Pressing the play button also doesnt reliably launch and start playing in Play Music like it would before. And when i press the call button on the left side, before it would launch Voice Dialer but now it usually launches google now, although a couple times it did randomly launch voice dialer.
Does anyone else have these same problems or is it just me? I'd like to find a way to make it so the screen doesnt turn on and the button presses are registered more consistently. I also would very much like to set what app pressing the call button will launch.
Feel free to also suggest any apps that you use with the headset to be even more convenient/productive. I wear it a lot while driving and wanted to have it handle reading and voice-inputting text messages while driving, but the LG app for this sucks and others I've tried havent really done what i wanted well enough.

Audio playback stopping/muting?

I'm having issues with the playback on my N5X when using headphones w/ remote. Bluetooth seems to work without issue.
The problem is, randomly, and usually within a minute of starting audio and putting the screen to sleep, audio playback will stop. Once I unlock the phone, it looks as if the OS still thinks audio is playing. If I toggle the play/pause button, I can get it to restart audio, but it does not pick up at the point where I heard the audio stop -- as if it continued playing while "muted". This occurs in at least 2 separate apps, which is why i'm thinking it's either an Android bug or possible a HW issue.
Anyone seen this?

I've had a problem playing audio using Podcast Addict over bluetooth, but it's not similar to what you're describing. In my case, playback just pauses randomly for a second or two, then continues. This can happen after 1 minute of playback, or 20 minutes. I'm assuming at this point that my problem is with the app, android 6.0 is still very new and some apps may have problems (like camera apps flipping everything upside-down).
Exactly the same issues with my Nexus 5X... Deezer and Podcast Addict. Music starts but as soon as the display is turned off, approx. one minute later the sound stopps but when I turn the phone on again the player looks like still playing... Very annoying... Have you changed someting like the "lock when power button is pushed" option ore anything which is connected to the display?
Same here with Spotify... I find that I have to unplug and replug the headphones, hit pause, then play again. :/ Have you tried disabling Doze for your music player? It may have something to do with that, but I haven't experimented with it yet.

Yes I Had this problem. Mine did the exact same thing as yours. I rebooted the phone and it seemed to fix the problem. I can't tell if I would have had the problem again because I sent my phone back the next day for a replacement. My WiFi was terribly slow so they are sending me a new 5X.
I'm having the same problem when I use Google Music. I don't even have to turn the screen off. Did you have any luck figuring the problem out?

Yes, I did deselect "Power button instantly locks". I'll try putting it back to the default to see what happens. I know this has nothing to do with the "Smart Lock" state, because it happens even when I'm away from home.
Otherwise, I've found nothing that solves the issue. It's very annoying. The good thing is it probably only happens 10% of the time when I turn off the display with audio playing.
Yeah it's happening every single time I play music. Driving me crazy
Having the same problem. Seems to only happen when I'm doing something that would trigger the motion sensors. So when walking, all audio gets muted within a few seconds of me starting to walk, then stays muted. However, if I pause the audio, after 10 seconds I hear a pop (like the sound of a speaker turning off or something similar) and audio is available again. Exact same thing happens when I'm biking. If I'm stopped, music will continue until I start biking again, pause music, ten seconds later pop, resume. Everything is fine until I stop again, then repeat.
This isn't a problem when I take the subway, or a bus.
It's not just music that's muted though, all notification noises and alarms are also muted. The phone thinks the volumes are all where they're set, but won't play anything either over headphones, bluetooth or the speaker.
A reboot has not fixed my issue. System logs haven't revealed anything. Since this doesn't seem to be a super widespread problem, I'll be RMA'ing this one and hoping it doesn't happen on my next.
I'm not the only one
I have similar issues with mine, using podcast addict and YouTube with either wired headphones or wired aux jack.
What I find weird is that I am able to continue watching the video but without sound. I am unable to reliably replicate the problem but it always happens very quickly in the car using the wird aux input.
Sometimes the headphones will be fine for a long time while I'm sitting still and other times it will seem to stop even if I have no motion happening or have not touch the headphones.
Would be interested in trouble shooting this please advise.
Putting my phone away without turning off the screen seems to make this happen less. However, since this doesn't seem to be a super widespread problem, I've RMA'd my device. Not interested in starting out with a broken handset.
Been happening to me too - think since the MDB08L update. I just turned off Google Now 'Always On' and my podcast is playing fine (so far, lol). Not ideal because I do use OK Google, but continuous audio playback is way more important to me. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon. How can we report issues like this to Google?
Interesting. I use Nova Launcher and switched off Google Now 'Always On' in the phone settings, but left it enabled in Nova Settings 'Gestures and Inputs'. I can still say 'OK Google' on any screen and so far the audio is playing without stopping every minute or so.
Getting this too. Was out running earlier with headphones in, stopped playing randomly five or six times but found skipping track made it work again. At home, had it on loud speaker, got 5 seconds in but it froze, skipped track and got 3 seconds, skipped again and just got 1 second. Gave up after that..
But it works fine when connected to a bluetooth speaker or my car!

I tried this - switched off the "Always On" option. Went for a 40 min run tonight with music on through headphones and it didn't stop playing once.
Even now, got the phone playing through loudspeaker and it's having no problems!
Exact same issue here .
Audio playback stops but device still thinks its playing ie speaker icon on top bar. Sometimes stopping app and restarting helps other times no joy. I have also heard the short pop sound when it stops.
So far has happened in Youtube, google music and in some games. Also intermittent loss of text alert tones too.
Only sure fire way to reset is to restart phone.
I shall give the switching google now always on off trick see if this helps and report back (never use it anyway but still it shouldn't prevent audio)
Try a reboot

I did more searching online and found enough other people are having a similar to think that there's something going on with the software. One post on a nexus 5 X subreddit had talked to Google support and went through a process of a safe mode boot as well as a reboot. I have not tried a safe mode boot but a reboot has resulted in the best playback experience I have had since owning this phone. No interruptions in audio for the last several hours . I'm on Verizon and have not received any updates as far as I'm aware. I am hoping that this will last.
My phone updated yesterday... I'm not sure but I haven't run into this problem yet with the new update. It has only happen 3-4 times before the update but we'll see

After updating yesterday, I had it occur again this morning with video playback and the audio muting. So wouldn't be too hopeful, sadly...
