ICS will be released for the R800i and most GSM variants. Maybe it will be released for the R800at too, you never know.
But knowing that Verizon never offered a 2.3.4 update when Sony did, does that mean Verizon will never offer a 4.0.3 update while Sony will?

Officially no. Sony is working on ICS for r800x. The cm7 is STILL majorly flawed for r800x anyway. There really is no major plus to having it

That could be a valid reason why Verizon skipped 2.3.4. They probably saw ICS coming. As long as I get ICS, I'll be a happy boy.

I think snow is probably right. Me and my fellow Verizon users will most likely continue to take it up the arse, and will probably only be getting the 2.3.4 update when ics comes.

Hi guys and gals.
Right I have had my play for a while now , love the phone and I know that this might seem a noob question but there seems to be alot of speculation around if the play will officially get ice cream sandwich , I have held back from unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom Rom as I don't want to void the warranty.
Can anyone say officially if out lovely plays will get this upgrade.

hi Alex,
The ICS Update for our play's is set to be release from april-may of this year.
It's probably going to be release alongside PlayStation Suite, so if we get one of the two, be excited for the other, cause we're probably gonna get it too!
If you have a Verizon PLAY (And if you do, you're a sorry bastard. The thing gets ZERO development), then I'd go ahead and unlock the bootloader now. You aren't getting ICS from the big red anytime soon, so your best bet is CM9.

No, it's always been end of April/early May for Xperia Play, as stated in the Sony Developer Blog post from December 2011 here: http://blogs.sonymobile.com/products/2011/12/21/ice-cream-sandwich-coming-to-2011-xperia%E2%84%A2-smartphones-from-end-marchearly-april-2012/
I only hope Play will get some different skin for ICS. Xperia S got nice one framework, hope we will get something tasty. If not, then devs are my hope again.

HUGE requirements will continue the fragmentation.
Devices like the desire hd or similar, wich gets ics, but will be stuck on 4.0.
About 30% will be stuck on GB because of the grow of android this year, but will be smaller, as most new devices launch with ics.
And so on.
Updating should be like IOS, when an ipad 1 or iphone 3gs is still upgradeable to ios 5.1.1, wich has been released 2 weeks ago.
These are limited in the app store, but who cares?

That's the difference between a monopolized environment and a liberal one. Monopoly is easier to control, predict and dictate. But don't be as naive as to think apple doesn't turn obsolete old equipment with their OS upgrades. The timeline is just much more dilated than those of the less controled environments.

I bought Sony Xperia Ion in July, I have been anticipating the ICS release since and I have read several conflicting release dates so i decided to call 611 (AT&T CS) on 8-26-12 and they notified me that the official release date for ICS will be on September 1st. Again, I have not read this anywhere, I called Customer Service under Updrade or replace the device and asked the Customer Service agent through AT&T. I asked her if this was an official release date and she said it was......**fingers crossed**

Knowing how most customer service people are I wouldn't put too much stock into what she said. From what I have been told by my friend at Sony who deals with the Xperia sales and carrier relationships its still on track for mid September, but again its all up to AT&T so maybe they will surprise all of us. Doubt it....
A little off topic, isn't Sony putting out a patch update towards some of the Xperia line that has just been updated to ICS? That might explain AT&T's delays.

Where is everyone getting that AT&T is delayed. The original date was Oct for the ion ICS update. AT&T didn't start working on testing it till the ion was released? September would be a relatively quick turn around time for AT&T to get a major OS update approved.

Both the LT28i and LT28at have recently had new firmwares certified:

They're not testing on the arc! That was a hoax - someone used a custom ROM (based on 431 f/w which kind of gave it away) with the Android version hard-coded to 4.2. They visited a few Android sites and waited for people to spot it.

I still can't believe att ion saw ics really. A bit surprising to me especially taking into account what little interest they've shown with the device so far. Or Sony in general for that matter. There all about Samsung & HTC, Sony tends to fall through the cracks.
They could at least allow us to unlock the damn bootloader though, but I'm not holding my breath on that either.
X10a suffered same fate however most of us were eventually able to unlock BL. There were still certain serial #'s that remained unlockable, mine was one of the lucky one's. Don't get your hopes up.
