Xperia play ics ???? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys and gals.
Right I have had my play for a while now , love the phone and I know that this might seem a noob question but there seems to be alot of speculation around if the play will officially get ice cream sandwich , I have held back from unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom Rom as I don't want to void the warranty.
Can anyone say officially if out lovely plays will get this upgrade.
Thanks
Chris .

hi Alex,
The ICS Update for our play's is set to be release from april-may of this year.
It's probably going to be release alongside PlayStation Suite, so if we get one of the two, be excited for the other, cause we're probably gonna get it too!

If you have a Verizon PLAY (And if you do, you're a sorry bastard. The thing gets ZERO development), then I'd go ahead and unlock the bootloader now. You aren't getting ICS from the big red anytime soon, so your best bet is CM9.

Do you think that the r800at (AT&T) will get the update?

Nope not mate using a three UK branded handset , so do you think that could slow my update ?

You don't need to relock it, just flash the ICS .ftf file via flashtool once it's released

Thank u
thanks so much where will i find this .ftf file?

desperately waiting for this update !

I have both a Xperia play and a sgs 2 with ICS, after a few days of playing around with it, you seem to forget it's there. If there is a choice between ICS, and PlayStation suite. I would rather have the PS suite.
I would rather have more games, than something you will forget is there after a few days

So the ICS update was postponned as following: late feb - early mar, late mar - early apr, late apr - early may. Right?

No, it's always been end of April/early May for Xperia Play, as stated in the Sony Developer Blog post from December 2011 here: http://blogs.sonymobile.com/products/2011/12/21/ice-cream-sandwich-coming-to-2011-xperia%E2%84%A2-smartphones-from-end-marchearly-april-2012/

I only hope Play will get some different skin for ICS. Xperia S got nice one framework, hope we will get something tasty. If not, then devs are my hope again.

*Ignore this messsage*

Personally, I think that Sony's Xperia skin looks like a bunch of piss.
...and don't even get me started on that keyboard.

Xperia arc s

What are your thoughts on the new xperia arc s release? Im extremely annoyed as only 2months ago i tied myself into a 2 year agreement with O2.
Theres no need for there to be this arc s. If you have unlocked bootkoader you can run it at 1.4ghz. Just seems like a gimick but us arc owners should benefit from the new arc's firmware seeing its pretty much the same hardware

But when you unlock your bootloader isn't it dangerous to do OTA updates ?
When do we get the update again dose it role in about a month from now or sooner ?

New update is out in October along with the Arc S, and when you unlock the bootloader by the official SE way the updates cease to come through and you also lose some other things, if you need to unlock the bootloader the best way is to find someone with a SEtool and do it(and that way you can still get your updates!)

There's no more RAM
There's no more internal storage
There's no point
WTF still no front camera. what the hell SE thinking

You can relock your bootloader for the update, then unlock it again afterwards I think.

i'd read through our forum a bit more than you have already. there are multiple posts about ICS on the ion. and guess what they are ALL from sony. no one has released a custom developed ICS ROM for our devices yet. so the only thing we have been flashing is SONY made ICS.

A Google for 'Sony Xperia ION ICS'
from my LT28at, rooted and eating an Ice Cream Sandwich
ICS has been out a while now but only in certain countries.
A little research would have led you to the conclusion that you can flash it and root it even if it is not out where you are yet.
Seems like att is slow as hell at getting these updates out, not to menition att isn't too keen on Sony in the phone market after so many flops

At&t basically gives away phones so can't afford to put a lot into development.
I got my X10 &ION for free so I will let xda be my developers. Xda roms better than at&t anyway

I bought Sony Xperia Ion in July, I have been anticipating the ICS release since and I have read several conflicting release dates so i decided to call 611 (AT&T CS) on 8-26-12 and they notified me that the official release date for ICS will be on September 1st. Again, I have not read this anywhere, I called Customer Service under Updrade or replace the device and asked the Customer Service agent through AT&T. I asked her if this was an official release date and she said it was......**fingers crossed**

Knowing how most customer service people are I wouldn't put too much stock into what she said. From what I have been told by my friend at Sony who deals with the Xperia sales and carrier relationships its still on track for mid September, but again its all up to AT&T so maybe they will surprise all of us. Doubt it....
A little off topic, isn't Sony putting out a patch update towards some of the Xperia line that has just been updated to ICS? That might explain AT&T's delays.

Where is everyone getting that AT&T is delayed. The original date was Oct for the ion ICS update. AT&T didn't start working on testing it till the ion was released? September would be a relatively quick turn around time for AT&T to get a major OS update approved.

Considering the time it took att to bring the ion out, att has given themselves a bad reputation in terms of being late. Besides, the international ion has had ics for how long?

Only the non-LTE version has had ICS.
Both the LT28i and LT28at have recently had new firmwares certified:
LT28i: 6.1.E.1.19 Aug 31, 2012
LT28at: 6.1.C.1.105 Aug 31, 2012
Hopefully that mid september timeframe rings true for both.

Jelly Bean Update for the ION

Sony has announced that the Xperia ION will be updated to Jelly Bean in Q1 of 2013!

.. Ion still an unknown, hopefully by then we can unclock bootloader for custom rom or port from those official update.

I'm banking on summer 2013. The first round in Q1 are the new phones that just came out, second round at some undefined time shortly after that included the international ion. No word on any of the ATT phones. I'm betting we'll get it, but like in July.

What do you mean "Ion still an unknown"? That article says,

Don't hold your breath for AT&T to release the update. So far it sounds like they don't plan on releasing JB for the ion. At least we can run the international version.

I meant time frame is an unknown - Spec is right - ATT doesn't seem like they care much about Ion, so getting update is far beyond the thinkable. I am too don't like ATT fw, so happy with any other options

I still can't believe att ion saw ics really. A bit surprising to me especially taking into account what little interest they've shown with the device so far. Or Sony in general for that matter. There all about Samsung & HTC, Sony tends to fall through the cracks.
They could at least allow us to unlock the damn bootloader though, but I'm not holding my breath on that either.
X10a suffered same fate however most of us were eventually able to unlock BL. There were still certain serial #'s that remained unlockable, mine was one of the lucky one's. Don't get your hopes up.

I received this update too, though mine downloaded in about 10 minutes, I didn't pay much attention to it. Nothing seems to have changed on the phone, not even when I look at the 'Status' information. Can't find anything on the Sony sites about it either. Very curious.
