[Q] Any Threads For Troubleshooting/Improving System Speed? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running a stock, rooted Sense ROM (2.3.3) with Go Launcher (Sense kept re-launching every time I closed an app).
I have close to 140 apps installed, including the stock EVO apps, and 21 megs free. The low storage space alert is always in the notification bar.
My phone runs pretty slow: screen updates, opening apps, etc. Often, if I try to switch screens or go into settings, I have to wait... and wait.
This has been going on for months, and is constant - it never runs fast anymore.
I'm guessing it has to do with only having 21 megs available for apps? As far as what might be running in the background, in typical android fashion, if I open a task manager it will usually show eight to ten apps running. Apps I haven't used in days or weeks! Who knows why these apps are open.
Does anyone know of a thread or source for tracking down what might make these phones run so slow? Am I not allowed to have that many apps installed?

Well you say that you are rooted. So the first thing I would do is download Titanium backup from the market and "freeze" or uninstall all the sprint apps that you don't use. This will free up some space and help. Then go and find out about "V6 Supercharger". It is a script that will speed up your phone and stop the home screen from having to load every time. It's awesome.
Now if you are fully rooted, I would recomment flashing a new ROM. This will solve all of your problems at once. You can use titanium backup to backup all your apps and data then flash a ROM. Restore your apps, and use the V6 supercharger. It will be very zippy. I would recommend MikG for ya.

This should help you out.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386911

Thanks.
Rocket, I forgot to mention that I already had Titanium BU installed and had removed many of the Sprint bloatware (been using TBU ever since I rooted over a year ago).
Will check out V6 Supercharger, however, I still don't know if remaining storage space is related to a phone's system speed.
Diablo, I saw that thread a few days ago. I didn't read it in detail though, just skimmed it.
I guess I will read it in detail and try out all those suggestions. My main desire is to have 4G, wireless tether, and the camera all work. That prevents me from using some of the ROM's out there that break those features. Oh, and having it respond quickly.
Getting rid of those annoying "Low on storage space" messages would also be great, but I guess I'll have to wait till my next phone for that!

Have you tries partitionong your sd card and using darktremora apps2sd I have 140 apps installed and over 200 megs of internal memory left

I installed Brads updated Sprint V3 beta 4 last week. It has DT baked in I think.
I have yet to partition, but now I have about 80 Meg's free and the system speed is back!
I guess internal free space does indeed affect system speed.

Your best bet is to hit that thread and partition your sd card, its essential fo newer roms trust me and leave at least 32MB of swap when doing a partition.

HTC Desire phone storage.....why so low?

I come from a HD2, and whilst I think the Desire is a much more enjoyable device the only thing that disappoints me is the small amount of available phone storage. Granted I have a bloat free ROM on my HD2 but my Desire, with only one or two small apps installed, has only 89.75mb free versus the HD2's 271.97mb. As far as I know the two devices have the same amount of ROM.....
Is Android with Sense that much more bloated than Windows Mobile??
no offense, but thats self-answering, isnt it? you said it yourself: they have the same amount of rom.
Sense is the bloat. My stock N1, when freshly booted up with no apps, had over 120 MB (it's been a looong time, maybe as much as 130-140 MB) free. When I first flashed a Desire ROM and first booted up, it reported about 95 MB free.
that still isnt much of a difference in comparism to the ~270MB the HD2 has. so in the end id rather say that android is the bloat, taking 130MB more than wm65.
So Android with Sense takes up 425mb?? That seems an awful lot.

Once it gets rooted I am sure that will get reduced, and once Apps2SD (either rooted or official) becomes a reality this will not be a problem?
That's comparable to the size of Windows xp though isn't it. Just shows how far mobiles have become. I'm hoping Android gets an update soon to allow installation to SD without rooting as I'm sure this was promised, unless I'm mistaken. If you install a few apps like Google earth and other weighty, cache heavy apps I can imagine the Rom space would run out very quickly

yes there was an official statement from google that theyre working on an update for it. Apart from the heavy apps such as GEarth and games the available rom will let you install about 30-50 apps so not that bad me thinks
If you've only installed small applications how is it that you have used over 30mb of free space the handset comes with, try clearing your caches.
This has surprised me too. Only having 150mb to store applications when I was used to Windows Mobile sticking them all on my 16Gb SD card, or my GF's iPhone seemingly having endless storage. After 2 days I had run out.
It's like going back to PalmOS 5!
Having said that I love the device to bits.
Hi
just done wipe on my rooted Desire. on first boot got 130Mb free... did a restore and again low on space .. apps installed on internal memory sums up 60mb .. and i have only 10mb free space left ... how is that??? cant download/install anything now, not even some updates..
p.s. tried to install a2sd+ but didnt found good thread on how to do it..if anyone can help with this?!
thanks
probably your apps only install to the phone memory and you get left with only a few MB to spare, you can try and force them to install on the sd card and you will have enough space,i have about 30 apps installed inclusind rock plyaer, adobe flash which make 20mb and i still got 70 mb left.
I got 1.6Gb free

no, they install on sdcard. but anyway they consume some internal memory too (cache and stuff) anyway it's a downside of Desire ... too little internal memory..
managed to make ext2 partition and i can see it in quick info but it shows only 90mb A2SD and if i look in paragon partition manager i have 512mb on ext2 partition ... wth??

Internal Memory

Does any one know how much Internal phone storage there is from stock(NEW) on the desire, it's just that I dont seem to have much on my phone there is only 14.46mb left, and also tried to install a game that is 8mb and it says there isnt enough room please free up some storage???????
I remember that on 2.1 it should be around 130mb. And on 2.2 i think i heard you had an additional 10 mb so 140mb.
So if your's starts with only 14.46 there is definitely something wrong. (are you sure you haven't installed a lot of stuff already?)

Can any one help??????????
Would suggest hard reset and start from new

root your phone, install custom mod that has apps2sd+, partition your sd card and all your problems will go away.
There should be 147MB free space for aps in Desire, I personally counted every installed app and i found out it is +-150MB, so its right
What is the advantage of partitioning the SD card?

You have probably already checked this but just incase ............... have you checked if you are storing old emails - some attachments can use up alot of space
The desire is **** for the amount of internal memory available for apps, only about 147mb available on the desire compared to 1.8gb on the Samsung galaxy s. Even froyo apps2sd implementation is **** on recent update. I initially could transfer only bits of 7 apps to SD and later about a total of 11 apps to SD partially.
This internal memory problem is a major drawback on the desire. I have 2 desire phones both 3months old and both on htc froyo and not rooted, but if I was buying now I might have bought the galaxy s instead because of this memory issue. I like HTC sense but it occupies too much of the 500+mb of internal memory on the desire.
You can download quick system info app or other similar apps to check your system details.
I might try the sdk method for forcing apps to external memory but looking to see if it voids the warranty from HTC. HTC needs to get their heads out of their backside and deal with this apps2internal memory ****e. Plus allowing screen shots as in the galaxy s would be a bonus without rooting.
almost every day since i bought the phones i continuously have memory alerts as my internal free meory often fluctuates between 20 to 4mb as i gorge on loads of app and have about 117 icons now i think for apps on the apps/programs main folder, all apps are free, i would buy more if not for this memory problem. but i dont buy as i keep trying different apps on a daily basis and forced to uninstall apps to instal new ones due to memory problems. whats the ****ing point of allowing a 32gb card if one can only allow 147mb for any apps and programs on internal memory. atleast samsung in the samsung galaxy s had some foresight and put in 2gb internal memory of which 1.8gb can be used for apps unlike just 147mb on the desire.
Root your phone and force all apps to SD. I have over 20 apps installed and still have 100+mb of interal mememory left.

i would if not for the guarantee issue. once i am sure the guarantee isnt voided then will go that route or try the sdk method without rooting mentioned on another thread. think will query in writing this with htc whether the sdk method will void the warranty. all i want (for now) is proper apps2sd (not the crap dished out with froyo) and screenshots like on the galaxy s would be a bonus.
at present have about 115 icons on my apps/programs section. not sure how many preinstalled and how many i installed. but have about 30.91mb left after uninstalling google earth because of freq memory issues as google earth takes up about 22.4mb even though the download file is just 5.1mb. so if i had google earth as well (which i like very much but cant have for want of space) then i would have only about 8mb left and market gives problems while doing updates and hang for more than 24h at a time. anything less than 15mb will give probs and consequently one gets onlt 147-15 = 132mb for actual use on the desire unlike 1.8gb on the samsung galaxy s.
i havent bought any games or other costly programs because of the crap internal memory issue.
i've recently installed a2sd through Rom manager, and was wondering, how do i know if the new apps i install is on the sd?
if i backup from titanium backup, from before i had a2sd, will it store on the sd or internal memory?
Are u guys using Exchange mail with stock mail app?
Maybe check the mail app data size first. There is a terrible bug that the stock mail app has memory leak issue and will leave huge unremovable data even if you removed all emails.
Only a factory reset will temporarily resolve this. This happens with stock 2.1. I am not sure about 2.2...

So if I use revolked3 to root it and put app2sd will my froyo update which i have not had yet cos im on a branded o2 phone still work, cos i read some where people were having problems with revolked and the 2.2 update.
I have tried putting a stock rom on but with no joy and with 10 pairs of dirty pants later cos i keep ****in my self every time i try to do it cos i dont have a clue and i dont wanna brick me phone, so if anyone can tel me if this revolked3 is ok and wont mess with my update when I get it, I will put that on and install apps2sd
I'm having a similar problem. Before I rooted I only ever had one message advising I was low on disc space. I've now rooted using unrevoke and installed leedroid 1.9 with A2SD and I have constantly got the low disc space message. I have changed the modinstalllocation to the SD card and transferred every app it will let me transfer to the card. But I only have 9.08MB free on the phone?? Any ideas what I can do to free up more space?

i am using leedroid as well...i have 115mb left. i have tons of apps including navigon which should take 25 mb without APPS2sd+.
when downloading leedroid make sure u download the APPStoSD+ that plus at the end is important. If you mix up with froyo APPS2sd which is rubbish u will still do down on space.
mod install location is also not very good.
partion your sd card with rom manager to ext3
then install leedroid APPS2SD+
dont use apps2sd froyo or mod install location

Thanks. Will give that a try tonight.
Instead of starting a new one, I'll just post here.
If stock froyo has 150mb free space, there's something wrong with my internal memory. I just did a count (manually) of all apps (>100kb) and the total space was 40.43 MB. I excluded apps smaller than 100kb, which were the last 10-20 on the list, thus not a big difference. At the moment I have 27mb free space. I can imagine there's some "lost space" due to fragmentation, but 80mb ...
I already did the setInstallLocation mod to move some apps to SD. I think the next step is rooting... But I don't really want to do that before I figured out where those 80mb are.
The Desire is an amazing phone, but the internal memory makes it a prehistoric device. I mean, today we can cram terabytes in a wallet-sized case, but I'm still counting the kilobytes that would fit on my device...
EDIT: I updated google maps (4.5.1) and went to 19mb free space, there we go again...

Questions on best practice and most stable ROMS

So far I have always been running rooted stock ROMS. From what I read they tent to be very stable, the battery last longer, and do not lose some features (4G, HDMI) etc.
However lately, probably because of the apps I have installed, the phone is pretty slow, the memory on the phone is running out and does not work properly.
It is time for a complete wipe. However I am not the kind the person that change rom once a week. I would like something for the long term.
I have a few questions (feel free to answer to a subset of them):
1) I can I maximize the free space on the phone? On stock you can update a stock app (ex flash, acrobat reader, etc) but you cannot uninstalled. I was wondering if after the update, I have now the app taking twice as much space that is supposed to.
2) What is the best way to backup all the apps on the phone and restore them quickly, being able to chose what and what not? I am using Titanium Backup but it is not clear what is an installed app and what is system app. How do I guarantee that I do not lose the app data? I am trying to find a way that once I update the ROM I can configure/restore the apps that I want without having to spend hours on it. What I am afraid is to install/restore something that it is not going to work but it takes spaces on the phone. One of the thing I really want to keep is the email configuration (3 gmails account, 1 hotmail and the link with Facebook accounts).
3) I am using App 2 SD Free but there are some large apps that cannot be moved on the SD (gmail, facebook, qik, flash, maps, twitter, Google Music, G+, etc). Does any work around exist to save precious space on the phone?
4) Regarding stability, not bloated, and full features available on OTA (4G, Bluetooth, HDMI, etc) What is the best ROM? I was looking into Fresh Evo (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20101297), Swagged Out (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258932), Sprint Updated 2.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321340), Clean Rom 1.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351890). I am leaning toward Fresh Evo because the author have been updating for a long time). Any suggestions?

Use A2SD, in terminal type:
SU
a2sd cachesd
Moves your Dalvik Cache to the SD Card. Free'd up about 200+MB on mine

It's actually very easy to tell which are user apps with TB. They're the ones in white text

MIUI, as long as you don't need 4G, everything else works and it's extremely stable. Other than a few times trying other ROMs, I've been using it as a Daily since June

Thank you for your answers. I have some follow up questions:

What is the quickest way to use terminal? Do I need the dev tools on my computer and put the phone in debug mode?
Where is the Dalvik Cache normally stored? I thought it was on RAM. Since it is a cache, I would expect that it changes often. Is it not going to wear out the sd card quickly?
2) The point is that I want to save also some system settings (ex: remembered password of wifis, browser history, sync settings, etc). Last backup save 203 items. It is going to be a pain to go thought one by one.
4) I looked at MIUI but I ruled it out because it does not support 4G. I use it every now and then.
Like you I was having some problems with my rooted stock (low phone memory, slow and some other performance issues).
I downloaded ROM Manager and then made a backup of my rooted stock. You can also do it manually by booting into recovery but ROM Manager is easier though some people will say is more prone to errors. Also download Titanium Backup or something similar and save all of the apps (both download and system apps).
Once I backed up my rooted stock ROM I then downloaded and installed the latest Cyanogenmod. As this does not have HTC Sense or bloatware I immediately got a significant amount of free space that handles all that I load.
One thing with Cyanogenmod 7.1, some people like myself will have freezing issues if you have less than 130 MB of free space on the phone. This is not a problem for me as I have more than that available. I chose Cyanogoenmod ROM over MIUI ROM as Cyanogenmod allows for 4G. Take a look though at all of the ROMs out there and decide for yourself.
I find that everything is running faster now and I no longer have the Bloat that Sprint put on the phone. You can also move more apps over to the SD Card freeing up more internal memory.
Apps like Flash and Adobe Reader can be downloaded from the Market and are updated just like any other app.
Good luck
Uhh, no to ROM Manager. It's known to cause problems.
The Terminal is an app. You use it on your phone.
AS for system settings, only a very few can be successfully moved from ROM to ROM. The only thing I backup is my Alarms. You don't have to do them one at a time, you know. Hit Menu, Batch and then you can do them en masse
Depending on how many apps you load on your phone you may want to re-partition your SD card if you have the space and create a 1-2 gig ext2 or ext3 partition to use for apps2sd. The main reason I rooted my EVO was because I constantly kept running out of space on my phone. I'm an app addict though and have been known to have up to 200+ apps on my phone before I re-flash it with another rom. With a 1.5 gig partition and apps2d, I have never run out of space for apps on my phone though If you do decide to re-partition your SD card you will need to completely backup your SD card to your PC first as it will wipe all data on the card. I have a 16 gig class 10card in my EVO and the speed is pretty good.
i would give energy sensation a go, i was using that rom as my daily it is really staple, great battery life and improves the video recording to 1080p HD as well as plenty of other little tweaks here and there....I am running ics-decks-pre-alpha7 which i am really liking only thing is you would have to be willing to give up your camera til a stable alpha or beta is released. I hope this helps...
I have been running the Sprint Updated 2.0 Final for a few weeks (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20631581 ). I also re-partition my SD card with 1.5Gb (if I remember well). So far everything is good except:
1) I have 99Mb free on the phone. I think the main reason is that I disinstall some of the Sprint Bloatware and haven't reinstall all the apps. However I started having problems when I had 60Mb available before the upgrade to this new ROM. So I am afraid that I am getting close :-/
2) Wifi Tether has problems. I am experience the problem here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1288 .
The workaround with Barnacle alleviate the problem but beside being annoying that I have to start Bernacle first and then the Wi-Fi tether, it sometimes stop working (I think it is when I I use the 4G and the 4g connection is lost) and I have to go though the cycle again :-/

If u want AOSP evo-deck-(gingerbread 2.3.7) only takes up 13mb of internal on initial boot 19mb after flashing gapps and its really stable too u might have to fix gps but thats the only issue i ran into (which is just a flashable zip if you do have to) and you can move the majority of apps to sd like CM it has a allow move to external option.

[Q] RAM issues

I have had been rooting my s2 since i have gotten over a year ago, and have not had lag issues with too much RAM being used. Now the other day my phone started using 600+ mb of RAM. I was on rooted 4.1.2 With GB27 modem. I thought resetting phone completely would work, but no hope. I wiped everything, and 5 min after powering up it still uses 600+ mb of RAm
I flashed multiple JB Roms to my phone with no avail. I am currently running SenseWiz 2.0 on 4.1.2 GB27 (followed steps in the Roms thread 100% to flash this btw). It still uses no less than 500+ mb of ram. This phone has never lagged on me before and it really irritates me. Something as simple as pulling down notification bar even lags.
Please let me know what I need to do to fix this.
Also not sure if this is right forum section, but sounded like a noob question to me lol.:crying:

Hi. Someone can give you a better answer, but something to check first is what's using it. I don't have this phone, but I think the location is:
Settings -> ________ (a tab) -> Applications -> then "swipe right" to show Running Apps. Since I don't think most people have this issue, it might be an app you installed that's just bogging down the phone. It should show as running, and maybe several processes. What app(s) do you install after flashing the ROM? (For example I install Yahoo Mail, Netflix, etc.) Or maybe some apps got in their with some crazy default app settings that make them stay awake and work all the time.
Use the Greenify app. It's amazing - puts to sleep the stuff you do not need until you open that app. For example, you don't need Angry Birds up in your business unless you want to play it, lol... that can clear RAM too...
G'luck. :good:

Thank you. I already have greenify and still no luck. I am ready to throw this phone at a wall! It is so slow.

[Q] [Help?!] Abnormally low free RAM and storage?

Hello,
I'm currently running Carbon Nightly Rom (CARBON-JB-NIGHTLY-20131117-1645) with kernel 3.0.64-CM-gd6f2f4a and I'm having massive issues with RAM and Storage. I've taken screenshots to get my point across as best as I can.
I'm strangely receiving abnormally low free RAM. Whenever I type a long text or a long paragraph, the programme i'm using will crash, giving the error "Whoops! ______ Has Crashed". I'm pretty sure this is because I'm running out of memory but I have all recent apps closed and I've looked at what apps I have running and there doesn't seem to be anything too extravagant.
The other major problem I'm getting is my internal phone storage. I have the 16GB internal storage model and after flashing my custom ROM(s) (Including gapps) I've ran all the way down to 10.46GB? Leaving only my phone 2GB or so leverage meaning I have to transfer photos and downloads, etc to my SD card a lot more frequently which Is becoming quite a nuisance. I don't have a ton of apps on my phone, and the ones that are on there are all used. Only 2.78GB of apps.
I really would like to get this fixed as I use my phone pretty much 24/7 and I just find the minor issues being the most annoying as you can imagine having to transfer every photo you take to your SD card every day(almost) as well as some apps crashing due to insufficient memory. I'd greatly appreciate your help!
Due to unable to post links, I've attached 2 screenshots that just show my problems.
Many Thanks!

Looking at the screen shots, my observation is that RAM is not the real issue here. It may be high considering you are running non-TW rom. However RAM usage in all TW ROMs also shows similar usage levels and they run perfectly on N7100.

I'm sorry but I'm quite noob at this! TWO ROMs? Could you elaborate and explain what these are and how they differ?
I was almost certain it was the RAM. Other people using same phone are using about 500MB just on applications. Mine is twice that? If I've got a handful of apps open, eventually one will crash, and keep crashing, how I fix it is simply clear my recent apps? Then it works fine again until there's too many recent apps again? I was certain it was RAM related because of it saying such low RAM when I had several apps open.
If it's not a problem with RAM, could you suggest on what it could be?
Cheers

TW: Touchwiz (Samsung stock based) I mean.
As I write, my RAM usage on my N7100 shows 1.33GB and the device is running perfectly. I am using TW based DN3 ROM with Note3 and S5 features (heavily loaded!)
Please install any other ROM and see and how your device performs. Also try TW based ROMs.

I'm using about 1.4GB with no recent apps (Thats just applications RAM) I have about 300-200MB RAM free which I thought was really low.
If I install a new ROM, wouldn't this effect my storage problem? With only 10.46GB left, Installing new ROMs will make this number get smaller and smaller right? Is there a way to remove software that Isn't being used?
Thanks!
update:
I Installed DiskInfo to see if I could find out where all this storage is being taken from. It's reporting that I'm using 7.7GB of data in the /data folder.
(Take a look at attachment for screenshot). So I had a look at this folder in ES File Explorer and the "dalvik-cache" folder says it's taking 448.26MB. Is this an abnormal amount? What would happen If I were to clear the dalvik-cache? In /data there is a folder which is titled 'backup' (/data/backup) but that is only 3.08KB so I don't think it's a backup taking the space. However, In the folder /data there is another folder named 'data' (/data/data) and this says its having 601.19MB within it.
I really would like to free up some internal storage but it only says that my internal storage is 10GB on a 16GB phone. Yes it was around 16GB before installing a new ROM.

You can clear cache and Dalvik cache from recovery.
System (ROM) will take 4-6GB space on on 16GB. Only balance will be available for you for apps and other data.
Meanwhile I guess you had wiped cachet/dalvik cache with every ROM installation. I suggest you test another rom and see the difference.

I cleared dalvik cache and applications cache. Didn't get much memory back as it reoptimized the apps after clearing the cache! I went around and unistalled apps I don't use. I didn't really want to result In it because I do use them, just not as frequently. But I got my internal storage space up to 4GB free.
As for RAM, I've not had much luck. Still using a ridiculous amount of memory with apps crashing whenever there is to much going on. I have to write in small sentences, send, small sentence, send, small sentence as a long paragraph etc would make the application crash, when I reopen the app, all the text would have gone. So this is starting to become a pain!
Any other suggestions that anyone can put forward?
